George Clooney Crashes 'Tomorrowland' Panel At Comic Con To Debut First Trailer

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55e5a73e6da811ed086af024-710-480/1-1865.jpg" alt="tomlin sage grandma" border="0" /><p class="source"><span>Sony Pictures Classics</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>For a crude sounding movie about a foul-mouthed granny taking her granddaughter to get an abortion, "Grandma" winds up packing quite the emotional wallop.</p><p>"Grandma" is certainly rude and in-your-face, but that's not its only function. It's not trying to be "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Jackass-Presents-Grandpa-Unrated-Blu-ray/dp/B00G2PA0ES">Bad Grandpa</a>" - it's a small-scale human drama that just so happens to have a biting sense of humor. </p><p>The film opens with Elle (Lily Tomlin, in a career best performance) brutally breaking up with her much younger girlfriend Olivia (Judy Greer, <a href="http://www.vanityfair.com/hollywood/2015/07/judy-greer-effect-every-single-line-summer-movies">spouse of the summer</a>). We immediately get the sense that Elle is quite a handful, but under that icy exterior is a lonely, pained woman, as evidenced by the next scene in which she bawls, alone, in her shower. </p><p>Her granddaughter Sage (Julia Garner) unexpectedly shows up at her doorstep, pregnant and in need of $600 for an abortion. If Elle were a "normal" grandma, she would simply hand over the money, but she's just as broke as her Sage, and thus begins their epic journey to pull together the cash begins.</p><p>The film then becomes a guided tour of Elle's life as she reconnects with several people from her past in an attempt to collect the money for Sage's abortion. She rekindles relationships with ex-lovers and old friends, conjuring up old bad blood in the process, and with each new interaction, another layer is peeled from Elle's cynical mystique. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55e5a73d6da811a06b6af02d-710-480/7-324.jpg" alt="tomlin grandma boyfriend" border="0" /><p class="source"><span>Sony Pictures Classics</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>"Grandma" is split into chapters, each marked by a single word that appears on-screen and sets up the action. The writing throughout the film really speaks for itself - Weitz' screenplay brilliantly reveals character details naturally via dialogue rather than ho-hum exposition. By the end of the film, we really know (and care about) these people, as they are fully formed beings with clearly defined motivations and backstories. </p><p>There's one segment in particular featuring the incomparable Sam Elliot that is so masterfully handled it stands out as one of the best scenes of the year. Elliot is only on-screen for a few minutes, but he turns in such a stellar work that it'd be criminal if he didn't receive recognition from <a href="http://www.oscars.org/">The Academy</a>.</p><p>If William Hurt pulled off an Oscar nomination with his <a href="http://articles.baltimoresun.com/2006-03-03/features/0603030096_1_supporting-actor-history-of-violence-nine-minutes">less than 9-minute part</a> in "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/A-History-Violence-Viggo-Mortensen/dp/B001R2NPRA">A History of Violence</a>," Elliot should be a lock. In mere minutes, Elliot gives an emotional, transcendant performance that grounds the film and gives us new perspective on its protagonist. </p><p><span>"Grandma" is a rare film that features just as many laughs as it does powerful, emotionally charged moments. Every performance from the leads down to the most minor supporting characters is terrific, and Tomlin leads the charge with gusto. Lily Tomlin gives the best performance of her career in 'Grandma'

<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">It's a movie full of big, relevant ideas that all fail to make any impact due to the film's lack of subtlety. By employing an omniscient, overbearing narration style, Reitman breaks a cardinal rule of writing: he's telling rather than showing. Instead of understanding how these characters feel through their actions, I know how they feel because an important-sounding British woman tells me so.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The film pretentiously opens in outer space, as a Woody Allen-esque jazz number croons and the dulcet tones of Emma Thompson, the film's narrator, lecture the audience on the </span><em style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Voyager</em><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> space program. </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">This all-knowing entity</span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> describes how satellites that amplified human sounds were sent into space to give any potential extraterrestrials a sample of life on earth. </span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">After this unnecessary history lesson, we home in on a morose man (Adam Sandler) as he goes to his son's room to use his computer to masturbate. When he discovers his son's Internet history is full of pornography, the narrator tells us Sandler feels sad that the old-school ritual of finding your dad's stack of porn magazines seems to have been lost in this technological age.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5436a24769bedd711e9cf92a-1200-2000/mwcratedpayoff1-sht.jpg" border="0" alt="men women children poster"><p class="source"><span>Paramount</span></p></img></div><p></p></div></div>Sandler is just one poor sap in this ensemble piece, but this scene encapsulates all you need to know about the film: these characters are not believable people, just conduits for spreading a Luddite mentality. <span>The movie wishes to shame those embracing the internet age by exaggerating the dangers and showcasing how disconnected we are as people because of it.</span></span></p>
<p>This perfectly valid criticism gets overshadowed by all the melodramatic excess, as Reitman can't help but shoehorn in other important, controversial topics no matter how tenuous their relationship to technology dependence. For example, there's an entire subplot surrounding a young woman with an eating disorder, and this is tied to the narrative through the pro-anorexia Tumblrs she visits. The film also<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> deals with eating disorders, stage parents and the idea of celebrity, overprotective parents, bullying, teenage pregnancy, and suicide, but the film's two-hour runtime allows for only the broadest of strokes. There's even a way of dealing with 9/11 that made me cringe with how lazily it was thrown in.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Although Sandler might be commended for taking on a more ambitious role than usual, he sleepwalks through most of the film. It's not his fault, though, as this is how his character is written. Other stars like DeWitt, Garner, and Simmons are wasted in boring roles, and there are brief hints of life when the film spends time with Judy Greer and "Breaking Bad's" Dean Norris, who actually give decent performances in spite of everything that surrounds them. </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The two youngest characters in the film, played by Kaitlyn Dever and Ansel Elgort, are the most interesting, as their relationship is the only thing that comes off as genuine. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Reitman is best known for his unique style of comedy that deal with serious issues, like "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Juno-Single-Disc-Edition-Ellen-Page/dp/B000YABYLA">Juno</a>" with teen pregnancy or unemployment in "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Up-Air-George-Clooney/dp/B00337KM2S">Up In The Air</a>." Something has been lost in his transition to full blown drama, as this and its critically-panned predecessor "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Labor-Day-Kate-Winslet/dp/B00K0CB1G0">Labor Day</a>" just don't work. Here's hoping his next directorial effort sees Reitman returning to the more darkly comedic territory he knows best. </span></p>

Not Even An All-Star Cast Can Save Jason Reitman's 'Men, Women & Children'
