Jubilant Foodworks announced a new brand called Ekdum! with a variety of biryanis from across India. And the love for biryani was evident in the stock market as Jubilant’s share prices jumped by over 6% on Thursday (November 17) morning. Its share price stood at ₹2,873.45 as of 11.45 am. <div type="image" title="jubilant." msid="79774160" hostid="261"></div> The company announced its Biryani foray with the likes of Hyderabadi Nizami Biryani, Lucknowi Nawabi Biryani, Dindigul Biryani, Kolkata Biryani, Butter Chicken Biryani, Egg Biryani, Paneer Makhni Biryani, and Tawa Chicken Biryani. Jubilant is also keeping its offering in the affordable range with a starting price of ₹99. "In line with our strategy of portfolio expansion, we are delighted to introduce Ekdum!,our new venture in the Biryani category. We see strong potential in this segment and are confident that Ekdum!, with its sharp and differentiated proposition will create a strong position for itself in the market,” said Shyam S Bhartia, Chairman and Hari S. Bhartia Co-Chairman, Jubilant FoodWorks Limited in a joint statement. The foray into the Biryani segment has also been appreciated by market analysts as the food item is one of the most popularly ordered dishes across e-commerce as well as sit-in restaurants. “Biryani is one of the most popular dishes and a large category in India— it lends well to delivery, sells well across lunch/dinner, appeals across demographics and offers scale and robust profitability/return metrics,” said a report by Kotak Securities. The report further said that there are three factors to keep in mind for Jubilant’s new offering – the pricing is attractive, the economics that can be achieved with Biryani is comparable to that of Domino’s, however, while Domino’s has a consistent taste offering through its pizza, managing the same with biryani could be a difficult task as it will also depend on the chefs hired. And, the company will also face competition from established brands like Biryani By Kilo, Behrouz Biryani, Biryani Bluez as well as traditional biryani outlets across different cities which have a brand legacy working for them like Hyderabad’s Paradise Biryani, among others. “JFL is opening three restaurants in Gurgaon for Delivery, Takeaway and Dine-In, with more restaurants planned to open in NCR over the next few months. In our view, this is a positive move by the company, which would help JFL to boost the revenue growth significantly going ahead,” said Amarjeet Maurya, AVP, Mid Caps, Angel Broking. Last year in March 2019, Jubilant Foodworks had also forayed into the Chinese food segment with its own brand – Hong’s Kitchen. Having started with a single outlet in Gurugram, the brand has scaled to five more stores. And experts believe that both the biryani and chinese cuisine offerings will help the company. “In our view, the platform is in place to accelerate store additions to 100-125 per year in Domino’s and 30-40 aggregate between HK and Ekdum!. We believe there is room for Jubilant Foodworks to step up aggression and investments,” said the Kotak report. Biryani makes Domino’s Indian franchise owner 7% fatter⁠— the street's evidently "jubilant"

<ul><li>Goldman Sachs maintained ‘Sell’ rating on <keyword id="95677" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jubilant-FoodWorks">Jubilant Foodworks</keyword>, which sells Domino’s pizza in India. </li><li>Aggressive growth plan of food delivery aggregators like <keyword id="6358977" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="swiggy">Swiggy</keyword> and <keyword id="830092" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Zomato">Zomato</keyword> as a risk for Domino’s sales, according to analysts.</li><li>Swiggy is now delivering in over 200 Indian cities, while Zomato is in more than 300 cities. </li></ul>Indian foodtech giants Swiggy and Zomato both house Domino’s in their list of restaurants to order from, but it seems the aggressive growth plans of the two delivery firms will leave Domino’s hungry for revenue. The share price of Jubilant Foodworks, which sells Domino’s and Dunkin Donuts in India, has plunged over 12% in the last three months. Goldman Sachs maintained ‘Sell’ with a price of ₹1,129 for shares of Domino’s parent company Jubilant FoodWorks. It said, “Dominos will find it challenging to deliver double digit same-store sales growth in FY20/21,” citing risk from aggressive expansion of Swiggy and Zomato in smaller Indian cities. Domino’s has over 1,227 restaurants in over 270 cities. Jubilant Foodworks had reported an operational revenue of ₹35.3 billion in FY19 as compared to ₹29.8 billion in FY18. Meanwhile, ICICI Securities in its report has pointed out that the “aggressive discounting by food aggregators over the past few months continues to impact the dine-in industry and Jubilant Foodworks’ dine-ingrowth in the top-10 cities”. Swiggy is present in over 200 cities while Zomato has gone beyond 300 cities in India. Their deep dive approach into tier-2 and tier-3 cities could result in Indians preferring to order in instead of going to restaurants to eat, something that has helped Domino’s same store sales so far. In the US too, Domino’s saw a similar turn of events, with food delivery aggregators like DoorDash, UberEats, GrubHub with their deep discounts and variety of options, impacted the sales of Domino’s. Swiggy and Zomato are eating into Domino's slice of profit

New Delhi, <keyword id="95677" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jubilant-Foodworks" source="Orion">Jubilant Foodworks</keyword> Ltd on Tuesday said it plans to acquire an additional 51.16 per cent stake in DP Eurasia NV, the exclusive master franchisee of the Domino's Pizza brand in Turkey, Azerbaijan and Georgia, through a subsidiary for a consideration of up to EUR 73.36 million (nearly Rs 670 crore). Jubilant Foodworks Netherlands B.V (JFN), the company's wholly-owned arm holds 48.84 per cent ordinary shares of DP Eurasia -- which is the largest pizza delivery company in Turkey, Jubilant Foodworks Ltd (JFL) said in a regulatory filing. JFN proposes to acquire, through any permissible mode including open offer, market purchase, the entire issued and outstanding ordinary share capital of DP Eurasia NV not already held by it at a price of up to 85 pence per share from existing shareholders of DP Eurasia, the filing added. "Aggregate purchase consideration shall be up to EUR 73.36 million approximately," it said adding it would be an all-cash consideration. DP Eurasia, together with its subsidiaries, offers pizza delivery and takeaway/eat-in facilities at its 694 stores (678 in Turkey, 10 in Azerbaijan and 6 in Georgia as on October 31, 2023), JFL said, adding it operates an asset-light, scalable business through franchised stores contributing 88 per cent to the overall stores. "It is the largest pizza delivery company in Turkey. In addition to the pizza business, the group also has its own coffee brand, COFFY, which trades from 67 stores at period-end, 78 per cent of which are franchised," the filing said. For funding the acquisition, JFN would be using a combination of existing term-loan facility availed from HSBC, which is backed by corporate guarantee issued by JFL and avail a new long-term facility from HSBC, again backed by corporate guarantee to be issued by JFL in favour of HSBC, the filing said. JFL said it will guarantee the repayment obligations of JFN towards HSBC up to an amount of EUR 60 million in addition to the existing guarantee amounting to EUR 45.89 million issued by it for securing the repayment obligations of existing term-loan facility availed by JFN from HSBC.

From Domino’s to Hong’s Kitchen – India's Jubilant Foodworks enters the Chinese fast food segment with its own budget brand

<keyword id="95677" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jubilant-FoodWorks">Jubilant FoodWorks</keyword>, the parent firm of Domino's Pizza in India, has come up with a programme because of which one can expect differently-abled employees in the company’s managerial roles in the coming years. 
 As a part of the programme, the company plans to have one differently-abled worker in tier-1 city outlets with 25 or more employees, said <keyword id="3371193" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Biplob-Banerjee">Biplob Banerjee</keyword>, executive VP (HR and CSR), Jubilant FoodWorks. 
 
Jubilant FoodWorks is now one of the several companies in the country that want to hire people with disabilities and train them for managerial roles. 
 
IBM India, for example, has four-hour sessions for senior employees, making them aware about unconscious bias while also stressing on the need to include more differently-abled employees in the workforce. 
 
"Differently-abled employees bring in a diversity of thought to the organisation, and hiring such persons is a business imperative for us, not a CSR activity," DP Singh, vice-president of HR (India/South Asia) at IBM, told ET. 
 
EY India hires differently-abled talent through the Ability Foundation in Chennai, and the whole process is governed by a special mechanism. 
 
Other companies that in the recent past have come up in favour of hiring differently abled staff include Infosys, Dell, IBM, HCL and Accenture.

Companies are chalking out plans to train differently-abled people for managerial roles

<ul><li>The company has reported a profit of ₹7,592 lakhs which is a 2.2% fall from the same quarter in the previous year.</li><li>Meanwhile, its total revenue from operations stood at ₹98,823 lakhs. </li><li>In Q1 FY20, the company had seen a profit after tax of ₹7,478 lakhs. </li></ul><keyword id="95677" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jubilant-FoodWorks">Jubilant Foodworks</keyword>, which runs Domino’s and Dunkin Donuts in India reported a 2.2% fall in profits for the second quarter to ₹75.92 crores. In the same quarter last year, its profits were at ₹77.67 crore. Its total revenues went up by 12% to ₹988 crore from ₹881 crores in the same quarter last year. The stock of Jubilant Foodworks was trading 5.10% higher at ₹1,429 at 2.30 pm. The marginal fall in profits seems to have been affected by multiple factors – the slowdown in the country as well as the growing dominance of Zomato and Swiggy. The stock was downgraded to underperform by the brokerage firm <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/credit-suisse-downgrades-jubilant-foodworks-to-underperform/articleshow/71310191.cms">Credit Suisse</a> in late September due to “a weak demand environment and aggressiveness of online aggregators”. This may be because Indians prefer pizzas to burgers, but the more plausible reason could be that Domino’s is profiting off the bitter legal battle that McDonald’s franchise operator in India is embroiled in. The McDonald’s Downfall Led by <keyword id="193724" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vikram-Bakshi">Vikram Bakshi</keyword>, Connaught Plaza Restaurants Pvt. Ltd (CPRL), a 50:50 joint venture between him and McDonald's India, runs 169 outlets in North and East India. A nasty legal battle ensued when McDonald's proposed to buy out Vikram Bakshi’s (MD, Connaught Plaza Restaurants Pvt. Ltd.) stake in 2008. They offered him $5 to 7 million but Bakshi wanted $100 million after Grant Thornton valued CPRL at $331million. In August 2013, McDonald’s ousted Bakshi as managing director of CPRL over alleged financial irregularities. Bakshi in-turn filed a complaint with the Company Law Board (now the National Company Law Tribunal or NCLT) in September 2013 claiming that McDonald’s was trying to strong-arm him into selling his share to them at a lower valuation. In July 2014, <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Companies/PJVjPgc9oU6dtUFoNbRfcN/NCLT-reinstates-Vikram-Bakshi-as-MD-of-McDonalds-joint-vent.html">NCLT reinstated Vikram Bakshi as MD</a> of CRPL. In June 2017, <a href="https://qz.com/1058465/want-to-know-why-mcdonalds-may-shut-down-in-half-of-india-ask-its-first-indian-business-partner/">43 outlets of the fast-food chain were closed</a> in the capital following the expiry of its eating house licences. In August 2017, McDonald’s terminated its agreement with CPRL, though the Indian venture has kept running its 169 outlets while the dispute is being examined by the courts. In the middle of all this, <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/over-half-of-mcds-outlets-close-down-in-north-east-india/articleshow/62246480.cms">in December 2017</a>, burger-loving Indians woke up to a rude shock when 84 McDonald’s in North and East India were shut down after its supply chain partner Radhakrishna Foodland discontinued supplies due to the alleged non-payment of dues. Most of the outlets subsequently reopened a month later. “Our growth has completely petered off,” Vikram Bakshi told The Economic Times. However, not all is bleak for McDonald’s. <keyword id="6211434" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Westlife-Development-Ltd-">Westlife Development Ltd.</keyword>, the other McDonald’s franchise partner that runs 271 stores in the Southern and Western parts of India plans to expand to as many as 500 outlets by 2022, according to a company spokeswoman. Domino’s Jubilant Story With all this unfolding, it is but natural that rivals like Domino’s, KFC, Burger King and Subway have been able to make hay while McDonald's sun has dimmed. In 2013, while Bakshi was busy fighting McDonald’s, Domino’s conveniently overtook McDonald’s as India’s largest fast-food brand. According to <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/cons-products/food/mcdonalds-has-a-legal-problem-in-pizza-loving-india/articleshow/63498024.cms">the Economic Times</a>, shares of India’s Domino’s Pizza operator Jubilant FoodWorks Ltd. have more than doubled in the past year. And this year, it is slated to open up at least 30 additional outlets to add to its 1,127-strong network across 265 cities. According to a transcript of a conference call between analysts and investors and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Jubilant FoodWorks, Pratik Pota, the CFO said, “There is significant potential for the pizza business in the country, and we are committed to leveraging that potential.” As a result of India’s growing economy and its youth population, the market for fast-food in India is expected to expand 5.8 percent to $21.2 billion this year -- a 50 percent jump since 2008 -- according to Euromonitor International, a market research firm. Until McDonald’s promoters in India can resolve their dispute, which looks unlikely at the moment, its competitors can continue to forge ahead.
