"It was probably 5,000 tweets, and they either said 'you're dumb' or 'you're an idiot.' Can you imagine just page after page of 'you're an idiot, you're an idiot, you're an idiot?'" </p><h2>Hartsock was shocked at the amount of hate she got after Galavis' elimination</h2><p>In "Road to Roses," Hartsock wrote she was "definitely attracted" to Galavis on her season but eventually realized the two of them didn't have "much to build on."</p><div type="image" title="Desiree Hartsock, Juan Pablo &quot;The Bachelorette&quot;" height="1171" width="1561" msid="85179633" hostid="261"></div><p>Hartsock described the reaction to her dumping Galavis as her first taste of "just how intense" Bachelor Nation could be.</p><p>She wrote in her book that she "thought it was clear" the two weren't a fit and was surprised when "the internet went wild" after the break-up aired. She recalled getting "thousands of notifications" on her phone from upset fans who called her "stupid and awful" for eliminating Galavis. </p><p>"It's hard to explain what it's like to experience such a tide of rage," she wrote. "I was simultaneously shocked and bewildered. From the vitriolic reactions, you'd think I murdered Juan Pablo and his whole family, not simply eliminated him from a dating show."</p><p>Hartsock told Insider she was even more surprised by the uproar because Galavis had been given far less airtime than many of her suitors. </p><p>"This guy has been on for like four episodes," she said. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Mike Fleiss, the creator of 'The Bachelor,' announced he's leaving the mega-popular franchise.</li><li>His departure follows an investigation into accusations of racial discrimination, Variety reported.</li></ul><p>The creator of 'The Bachelor" is leaving the popular TV franchise amid allegations of racial discrimination.</p><p>In late March, Mike Fleiss, who created the immensely successful dating show 21 years ago, announced he was leaving the franchise. His departure follows an investigation into allegations of racial discrimination, Variety <a href="https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/mike-fleiss-the-bachelor-exit-investigation-diversity-investigation-1235569534/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.</p><p>Individuals familiar with the situation told Variety that a number of employees had complained to human resources about Fleiss, leading to a months-long investigation conducted by Warner Bros. TV. Warner Bros. TV and ABC, which have aired and produced "The Bachelor" since 2002, both declined to comment about the investigation. </p><p>During the investigation, producers complained about Fleiss' "bullying" behavior, and said he would "lash out" against production staffers who suggested casting more diverse reality stars, sources told Variety.</p><p>"People said he would retaliate against people for having minorities and Black people on the show. He favored certain people over other people," an individual familiar with the investigation told Variety. "He would say, 'Minorities don't get ratings.'"</p><div type="image" title="Chris Harrison surrounded by cast members of &quot;The Bachelor&quot;" height="2481" width="3308" msid="99250157" hostid="261"></div><h2><strong>A longstanding problem with diversity</strong></h2><p>"The Bachelor" has <a href="https://www.insider.com/bachelor-racist-chris-harrison-rachael-kirkconnell-2021-2">long been criticized for its lack of racial diversity</a>.</p><p>The vast majority of the contestants and leads on "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette" throughout its 21-year history have been white. In 2014, Venezuelan athlete Juan Pablo Galavis was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/the-bachelor-casts-first-non-white-bachelor-2013-8">promoted</a> as the first "non-Caucasian" lead, but some critics called Galavis "white-passing," and the National Hispanic Media Coalition <a href="https://www.npr.org/sections/codeswitch/2014/01/06/260119028/the-first-latino-bachelor-makes-his-debut" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> the majority of Latinos in America have darker skin and deserve greater representation. (The New York post wrote that he "looks so white he could easily slip into a Mitt Romney family photo.")</p><div type="image" title="Juan Pablo Galavis on The Bachelor with Chris Harrison" height="1578" width="2104" msid="99250159" hostid="261"></div><p>It wasn't until 2017 that the franchise cast <a href="https://www.insider.com/rachel-lindsay-the-bachelor-bacherlorette-diversity-2019-9">its first-ever Black lead, Rachel Lindsay</a>. A few years later in 2021, the show had its <a href="https://www.insider.com/bachelor-rachel-lindsay-chris-harrison-matt-james-race-2021-2">first Black male lead, Matt James</a>. There has never been an Asian lead, though some "Bachelor" fans, including Simu Liu, are calling for Ethan Kang, who appeared in the 19th season of "The Bachelorette" last year, to become the next Bachelor.</p><p>Contestants of color, especially Black people, are often eliminated early in each season, studies show. A 2016 study by Splinter found that 59% of Black contestants leave within the first two weeks, and another 2016 study by Salon found that only four winners in the 31 seasons of "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette" by that time could at least partially claim non-white ancestry.</p><p>The show has made increased efforts to expand its diversity in recent years. The next star of "The Bachelorette," airing this summer, is Charity Lawson, a Black contestant from the most recent season of "The Bachelor." "You can't just flip a switch because when things have been going a certain direction for a long time, it takes awhile to turn around a big boat — and 'The Bachelor' is a big boat." </p><p>Harrison left the franchise in 2021 after he was <a href="https://www.insider.com/bachelor-contestants-chris-harrison-franchise-racism-2021-2">condemned by fans and contestants</a> for <a href="https://www.insider.com/why-chris-harrison-left-bachelor-controversy-2021-6">defending a white contestant for attending an Antebellum South-themed formal event</a>.</p><h2><strong>The Fleiss-less future of 'The Bachelor'</strong></h2><p>In a statement to Variety, Fleiss acknowledged that he could have done more to diversify the show, and hopes the franchise will continue to move in the right direction as it continues without him.</p><p>"I had no idea back in 2002 that we were building a pop culture juggernaut. It was a crazy idea then and sure as hell continues to roll — just look at every network and streamer that has ripped us off! Since its premiere 21 years ago, times have certainly changed and I'd have to say we didn't keep up with the pace of those changes," Fleiss said in his statement.</p><p>"I am proud of the work we've done over the past five years to make the show substantially more diverse, but I do believe I could have done more. Hopefully, the franchise will continue to move in the right direction," Fleiss said.</p><p>Fleiss will have zero involvement in the show moving forward, although he will continue to be credited on the franchise as its creator.</p>

And that is very much real, and something I very much felt." </p><p>Viall - who spoke to Insider after announcing the launch of Network Viall Files Media Group, his new podcast network - landed his own "Bachelor" season in 2017 after he was runner-up on two seasons of "<keyword id="914894" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="The-Bachelorette">The Bachelorette</keyword>" in 2015 and 2016 and appeared on one season of "Bachelor in Paradise." </p><h2>Nick Viall proposed to Vanessa Grimaldi during the finale of his season, but <a href="https://www.insider.com/why-bachelor-nick-viall-and-vanessa-grimaldi-split-2017-8">they broke off their engagement five months later</a></h2><div type="image" title="Nick Viall Vanessa Grimaldi" height="1500" width="2000" msid="82267027" hostid="261"></div><p>Two years later, Grimaldi revealed that she <a href="https://people.com/tv/bachelor-nick-viall-reacts-vanessa-grimaldi-didnt-want-to-get-engaged/">hadn't wanted to get engaged during the show</a>. </p><p>"They didn't air this," Grimaldi said while appearing on former "Bachelor" contestant Taylor Nolan's podcast <a href="https://letstalkaboutitwithtaylornolan.libsyn.com/">"Let's Talk About It"</a> in October 2019. "I had a conversation with him, and I said, 'Listen, wouldn't it be better if we just date outside of the show and then get engaged? Because that'd be more meaningful. "There was a lot of frustration with wasted opportunity, and that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. And it's the fans that kind of dictate the response and expectations." </p><p>Viall believes that these changing attitudes also reflect how much <keyword id="6367193" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="dating">dating</keyword> has changed over the last two decades. </p><p>"Modern dating is different than it used to be even when the show started," he said. <p>Host Chris Harrison <a href="http://abc.go.com/shows/the-bachelor/blogs/extras/juan-pablo-galavis-next-bachelor" target="_blank">made the official announcement</a> during the "After the Final Rose" special, following the season finale of "<keyword id="914894" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="The-Bachelorette">The Bachelorette</keyword>" on Monday night.</p>
<p>Galavis, 32, was a season 17 contestant, who wooed female audiences during his brief run on the show. The Spanish-speaking Miami resident retired from professional football — ahem, soccer — in 2009 to spend more time with his daughter, Camila.</p>
<p>"It's very hard to date when you have a daughter, that's why I took the chance to come here," Galavis <a href="http://abc.go.com/shows/the-bachelor/blogs/extras/juan-pablo-galavis-next-bachelor" target="_blank">told the cameras</a> after he was booted from the show. "Hopefully I'll find a stepmom for Camila pretty soon."</p>
<p>While "<keyword id="274607" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="The-Bachelor">The Bachelor</keyword>" has had a handful of minorities as suitors before, never before has a non-Caucasian been cast in the titular role.</p>
<p>In 2012, two men who auditioned and failed to make the cut brought a class-action lawsuit against the show, arguing racial discrimination. A U.S. District Court <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-bachelor-racial-discrimination-case-dismissed-2012-10" target="_blank">ruled that ABC is protected</a> by the First Amendment right to control the show's creative content — like casting white people to appeal to a primarily white audience.</p>
<p>It'll be interesting to see if ABC casts more Latina contestants than usual, and how over-the-top the network will be at reminding audiences of its Latin lover's heritage.</p>

The song is about a man falling in love with another man, so the singer's choreographer wanted to have two men dancing with each other in the performance. But <a href="http://www.tmz.com/2015/11/12/dwts-gay-dancers-abc/" target="_blank">TMZ</a> reported that ABC wasn't having it.</p><p>According to the site's sources, a "DWTS" producer responded to the choreographer's request via email: <span>"Apologies all but this is a definitive no from the network."  </span></p><p><span>ABC reportedly said it would allow "near dancing," such as the performance earlier this week in which pro dancers Alek Skarlatos and Carlos PenaVega basically toss each other around to Queen's "We Will Rock You."</span></p><p><span><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5644d7f711231403018b4916-713-351/dancing with the stars gay dancers.gif" alt="DANCING WITH THE STARS GAY DANCERS" data-mce-source="ABC" /><p class="source"><span>ABC</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></span></p><p>Show representatives declined to comment for this story. For years, the network had been pressured to have a minority or gay man lead "The Bachelor." Ironically, its first minority bachelor, Juan Pablo Galavis, who's Latino, would say that <a href="http://thetvpage.com/2014/01/17/juan-pablo-galavis-gays-allowed-bachelor/" target="_blank">a gay man could never be the Bachelor</a>.</p><p>It would seem that ABC's nonfiction shows haven't caught up to its scripted series. A gay couple is part of the central story on "Modern Family," for example.
