<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6360409" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nasa">NASA</keyword> often draws its <keyword id="73998" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="astronauts">astronauts</keyword> from the military, but those personnel are usually pilots.</li><li>In the mid-1980s, however, NASA got its first <keyword id="640165" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Navy-SEAL">Navy SEAL</keyword> astronaut, Capt. William Shepherd, and he wasn't the last.</li></ul><p>It is no secret that <keyword id="359579" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Navy-Seals">Navy SEALs</keyword>, the special operations force of the US Navy, are constantly striving to out-perform themselves and each other, but how far can they go? In 1984, one of them went above and beyond his teammates and made history.</p><p>"At the time, NASA was taking astronaut candidates who were not just pilots," said Capt. William Shepherd, retired SEAL, and the first commander of the International Space Station. "There were candidates made up of doctors, engineers and scientists, and I looked at that and said, 'You know, I've spent a lot of time in the water in my SCUBA gear, and that's an awful lot like being in a space suit, so I think I'll just apply and see what happens.'"</p><p>Not long after, Shepherd learned he would become a member of the NASA Astronaut Corps, making him not only the first military non-aviator, but also the first Navy SEAL to go through astronaut training in US history.</p><p>After four years of training, Shepherd embarked on the space shuttle mission STS-27 (Space Transformation System 27), and launched into space for his first time December 2, 1988 from the John F. Kennedy Space Center, Cape Canaveral, Florida.</p><p>"We are now at a crossroads, deciding whether we are bound to inhabit only the Earth, or if humans are to live and work far from the home planet," said Shepherd in an interview regarding the fifth anniversary of continuous life aboard the International Space Station. "Let us continue now with new explorations which are more expansive and more bold; voyages which will define us as a space-faring civilization."</p><p><div type="image" title="Navy SEAL NASA astronaut training" height="1664" width="2500" msid="77468327" hostid="261"></div></p><p>Shepherd's path to becoming an astronaut in service to the country started with Underwater Demolition Team Eleven, then SEAL Teams One and Two, and Special Boat Unit Twenty, all operating in the Pacific, Atlantic, and European theaters.</p><p>Although Shepherd was standing in the ranks among the most highly trained warriors in the world, he looked toward the stars to achieve more, he wasn't the only one. Capt. (SEAL) Chris Cassidy, a current astronaut, spent more than 10 years in the SEAL teams and was directly influenced by the previous achievements of Shepherd.</p><p>"In my experience with the SEAL teams and with going through BUD/S, it's given me the confidence to know I can accomplish anything that I want," said Cassidy in an interview with US Navy SEAL &amp; SWCC Page. "If you look at SEALs after their life in the teams, you'll find people in all different sectors of industry doing all types of things. I personally always had an interest in astronauts, and I followed Capt. Shepherd's career and was inspired by him to be an astronaut."</p><p>In 2004, Cassidy was selected for NASA's Astronaut Candidate Class and joined a group of fellow explorers including pilots and engineers. Shortly after selection, he began intensive training that included land survival, T-38 jet ground and flight training, Shuttle orbiter systems training, space station systems training, science and engineering briefings and orientation tours at all NASA centers, including the Kennedy Space Center and Marshall Space Flight Center, Huntsville, Alabama.</p><p>Currently, Cassidy is in command of the International Space Station on "Expedition 63." The current mission he leads is conducting research investigations focused on biology, earth science, human research, physical sciences and technology development, as well as providing the foundation for continuing human spaceflight beyond low-earth orbit to the Moon and Mars which is central to future space exploration as part of NASA's Artemis program.</p><p><div type="image" title="Navy SEAL NASA astronaut training" height="1664" width="2500" msid="77468330" hostid="261"></div></p><p>The Artemis program is an ongoing US government-funded crewed spaceflight program with the goal of landing "the first woman and the next man" on the Moon by 2024, and it is likely that a US astronaut currently serving in the program will be the next American to step on the surface of the Moon.</p><p>It is possible that astronaut could be Lt. (SEAL) <keyword id="8553647" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jonny-Kim">Jonny Kim</keyword>.</p><p>In 2002, Kim decided to leave his hometown of Santa Monica, California to enlist in the Navy and join the ranks of Naval Special Warfare operators.</p><p>"I didn't like the person I was growing up to become. I needed to find myself and my identity," said Kim in an interview with former SEAL, Jocko Willink. "And for me, getting out of my comfort zone, getting away from the people I grew up with, and finding adventure, that was my odyssey, and it was the best decision I ever made."</p><p>After completing Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL (BUD/S), Kim was assigned as a Special Warfare Operator to SEAL Team Three Charlie Platoon and served as a Special Operations Combat Medic, sniper, navigator and point man on more than 100 combat operations spanning two deployments to the Middle East including Ramadi and Sadr City, Iraq.</p><p>His experiences as a medic taught him about teamwork, humility and service. Upon returning home, he decided to challenge himself yet again and applied for a commissioning program that put him on the path to become a medical doctor. Kim's application was accepted and he began his residency to Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts.</p><p><div type="image" title="jonny kim" height="3712" width="5568" msid="77468333" hostid="261"></div></p><p>In 2017, Kim was a resident physician in emergency medicine with Partners Healthcare at Massachusetts General Hospital, and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. He finally met his goal of becoming a doctor, but he didn't stop there. That same year, he applied to become an astronaut and was accepted, joining NASA's team on the Artemis program.</p><p>"I was told that with the right attitude, and with enough hard work, if you get up after every time you fail, you can amount to something and you can do positive work. You can leave a positive mark for our world, and that's what I aim to do," said Kim.</p><p>Kim's unwavering perseverance led him to be the outstanding American that many call a hero, and he encourages many others to follow in his path of greatness as well.</p><p>"Don't let that hunger for the unknown go away," said Kim. "That curiosity is so important, so you should maintain that passion for what you do. Never in a million years would I have thought I could have been an astronaut candidate. I didn't have the confidence from my childhood, but dreams are possible and all good things in life are hard to get, so persevere and don't give up!"</p>

How the first Navy SEAL ended up in space

But behind his modesty is a highly successful professional who's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jonny-kim-korean-american-nasa-navy-seal-los-angeles-2020-1">fought one hardship after another</a> and continues to build on an awe-inspiring resume - one that makes even seasoned US senators <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jonny-kim-career-navy-seal-nasa-astronaut-harvard-doctor-kids-2020-1">question</a> what they're doing with their lives.</p><p>Kim enlisted in the Navy out of high school in 2002, later joining SEAL Team 3. He served more than 100 combat missions over two tours of duty in Iraq as a medic, navigator, point man, or sniper, and earned prestigious Bronze Star and Silver Star medals, among other service awards. As if that weren't enough, Kim picked up a bachelor's degree in mathematics, graduated from Harvard Medical School with a doctorate, and later completed his residency in <a href="https://www.annemergmed.com/article/S0196-0644(18)30047-7/abstract" target="_blank" rel="noopener">emergency medicine</a> at Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital.</p><p>Then in 2017, during a visit to the grocery store, Kim got a call from NASA notifying he'd been selected as one of only <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ap-nasa-picks-12-new-astronauts-from-crush-of-applicants-2017-6">12 new astronaut candidates</a> from a pool of roughly <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/record-number-of-americans-apply-to-beanastronaut-at-nasa" target="_blank" rel="noopener">18,300 applicants</a>. </p><p>"My first emotion was, of course, being elated. It was a surreal moment. But then I felt guilty," Kim told Business Insider.</p><p>He said the feeling followed him throughout a series of interviews, during which he met countless other applicants.</p><p>"When you realize that you're the one who's been selected, it's almost like a survivorship guilt type of thing. Because you know that those folks can be just as qualified and deserving to do the same job," Kim said, but noted that - today - he no longer feels that guilt. "We have a saying in the [SEAL] teams. It's 'earn your Trident every day.'" (The Trident refers to a special gold pin or insignia that Navy SEALs wear after earning their <a href="https://www.popularmechanics.com/military/a29995035/navy-seal-trident/">special warfare certification</a>.)</p><p>"What that means is that you have to earn your right to be where you are every single day," he added. Kim's definition, though, is the antithesis of stature.</p><p>"Success to me means serving a calling higher than yourself that improves the lives of everyone and is done completely in the name of service," he said.</p><p>One path Kim sees to that manner of success is maintaining an ample supply of humility. But he added that's now extra challenging because being an astronaut is "a very public position," he said, and one that contrasts heavily with his previous life and career choices.</p><p>"I was pretty much nonexistent on the internet before NASA, and that was really because I've been inspired by amazing sacrifices of people who did amazing things - jumping on grenades or sacrificing their lives or doing the most crazy, brave things without hesitation and never, ever seeking recognition for it," Kim said. So embrace that," Kim said. "If I could talk to my younger self, I would just say that the path to great things is filled with a lot of stumbles, suffering, and challenges along the way. But if you have the right attitude and know that hard times will pass - and you get up each time - you will reach your destination."</p><p>And, referring to his "earn your Trident" mentality, Kim says it's important to maintain humility throughout both failures and successes and "never ride on the coattails of a previous day."</p><p>"I think that's really important if you maintain that kind of attitude. Attitude is so important," he said.</p><p>So is working hard - but not too hard.</p><p>"Nothing replaces grinding," he said. "It's just you need to make sure you're doing it sustainably and keeping the big picture in mind. It's so easy to lose focus in the day-to-day grind of life."</p><h2>'You need to do the right thing, regardless of who you're standing up against'</h2><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e21f223b6d52d645f44c6f2-1896/screen shot 2020-01-17 at 94201 am.png" alt="jonny kim" /><p class="source"><span>NASA</span></p><p class="caption">Jonny Kim during a deployment to Iraq as a Navy SEAL.</p><p>Kim also offers a word of warning against "toxic" egotism and "standing up for what's right," which he recounted in a war story in Iraq that he said was among the hardest lessons he ever learned.</p><p>Kim was a combat medic who was "seriously outranked" by a physician's assistant (PA) following a mortar attack. After Kim struggled to insert an intravenous needle to stabilize a wounded soldier, he said, the PA was "giving him a hard time."</p><p>"I was professionally embarrassed. It affected me and I wanted to do better, but I was also intimidated by this guy because he was older than me, he outranked me, and had a lot more experience," Kim said. "He kind of was making me feel small."</p><p>That pressure followed Kim to a seminal moment in his life not long after that: The shooting of his friend Ryan Job in the line of duty in 2006. (Job died several years later during facial reconstruction surgery.) Kim said he managed to stabilize Job, but disagreed with the PA about what to do next; Kim wanted to get him to an operating room right away, while the PA wanted to insert a breathing tube up his nose (a very painful procedure) during a stopover to the hospital.</p><p>"That's something you would never do for someone with suspected maxillary fractures - facial fractures - which Ryan definitely did have from being shot in the face," Kim said. "I remember getting in a really heated argument, trying to do my best to stand up for my friend, because I know that this procedure that this physician's assistant wanted to do would severely hurt if not kill my friend."</p><p>At that point he said the PA asked Kim to "safe and clear" his Navy SEAL weapons outside, a military regulation, and when Kim returned, the PA had inserted the device into Job.</p><p>"I feel that that is one of the biggest failures I've ever had: It was protecting my friend. I knew what the right thing was. I don't think I fought hard enough to protect him," Kim said. "I knew what the right thing was to do and I was intimidated by this senior figure, but it wasn't a good excuse for me."</p><p>Kim says in hindsight that "ego is probably one of the biggest poisons" in society, adding that "it's toxic to any environment."</p><p>"You need to do the right thing, regardless of who you're standing up against," Kim said. "I promised myself after that, that - no matter what - I would always stand up to do the right thing. I had to learn outside of the SEALs," Kim said. "And that meant adapting to people in your civic group, communicating with people from all walks of life."</p><p>"You don't work with two-year-old toddlers who are in the emergency room, or 85-year-olds who are on their deathbed and want someone to talk to and hold their hand with," Kim said, referring to his military experience. "A lot of those soft skills - working with groups of people who I've never met before to accomplish a mission, adapting to personality types - those are skills I've learned outside the SEAL time."</p><p>Kim said it was a mixture of the soft and hard skills he learned that enabled him to become one of the 13 astronaut candidates to graduate from NASA's latest program.</p><p>"I would say that the combination of those two skills, soft and hard skills, really enabled me to be a good candidate as an astronaut," Kim said.</p><p>But possessing the two traits is only half the battle, Kim said - it's also important to know when to apply each skill set. Despite some of the stereotypes of being a Navy SEAL, Kim said nearly all of the SEALs he served with were masters of controlling their emotions, a skill that helped him transition from being a SEAL to a physician and astronaut.</p><p>"I know that SEALs [have] this connotation of being very aggressive and hardcore," Kim said. "And in a lot of ways, that's correct, but I'd like to make this point clear: 99% of Navy SEALs are the most quiet, humble, professional warriors that exercise very controlled aggression."</p><p>"Controlled aggression, to me, is one of the most important traits to have," he added. "To have that social intelligence to know when to exert aggression in the military environment, and when to stay calm, cool, and collected."</p>

"I remember getting in a really heated argument, trying to do my best to stand up for my friend, because I know that this procedure that this physician's assistant wanted to do would severely hurt if not kill my friend."</p><p>At that point, Kim said "nearby Army soldiers" asked him to "clear and safe" his weapons outside, per a strict Army regulation, at which time he reluctantly left Job's side.</p><p>When he returned, the PA had inserted the device into his friend.</p><p>"I feel that that is one of the biggest failures I've ever had: It was protecting my friend. I knew what the right thing was. I don't think I fought hard enough to protect him," Kim said. Jonny Kim - a 35-year-old NASA astronaut, doctor, Navy SEAL, and combat veteran - reveals what he learned from his greatest mistake

Ted Cruz of Texas joked that he felt "horribly, horribly inadequate" while speaking in front of a group of newly-graduated NASA astronauts on Friday.</p><p>"What the heck have we been doing with our lives," Cruz said of himself and his Republican colleague, Sen. John Cornyn, and pointed to one of the astronauts in particular, US Navy Lt. Jonny Kim.</p><p>"You're a Navy SEAL, with a degree to Harvard Medical School," Cruz said of Kim. "That's just ridiculous. I mean, he can kill you and bring you back to life - and do it all in space."</p><p>Since his graduation, Kim's <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/sites/default/files/atoms/files/kim-j.pdf">accomplishments</a> have catapulted him to viral fame.</p><p>"If there was a movie that came about this guy, you would've never believed it," said one of the co-hosts for the veterans-themed podcast "Zero Blog Thirty."</p><p>Kim said he first knew of the jokes after his friends and members of his Navy platoon sent him the memes.</p><p>"I think they're funny," Kim told Business Insider in an interview. "I don't take any of them seriously, but I appreciate the spirit and the comedy that people put into it."</p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e20334162fa815c022d0ba5-2400/49238914658b5d5faf59fo.jpg" alt="jonny kim" /><p>Kim, a 35-year-old Los Angeles native, graduated from the latest astronaut candidate class and is now eligible to partake in NASA missions. He is the second Korean-American NASA astronaut after Mark Polansky.</p><p>His resume includes Navy SEAL training and over 100 combat missions during two deployments to Iraq, where he served as a sniper, medic, and navigator; he earned a Silver Star for battlefield valor. He then graduated from the University of San Diego, where he earned a degree in mathematics; and then became an officer in the US Navy.</p><h2>'I made a promise to those guys who died'</h2><p>Following his commission, he attended Harvard Medical School and graduated in 2017. His reason for attending one of the <a href="https://www.usnews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-medical-schools/harvard-university-04047">world's top medical schools</a> is based on his former teammates, who were shot during a deployment to Ramadi, Iraq, in 2006. Two of his friends were killed, including one who was shot in the face.</p><p>"It was one of the worst feelings of helplessness," Kim said to <a href="https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2017/07/med-school-grad-to-trade-scrubs-for-space-suit/">The Harvard Gazette</a> in 2017. "There wasn't much I could do, just make sure his bleeding wasn't obstructing his airway, making sure he was positioned well. He needed a surgeon. He needed a physician and I did eventually get him to one, but … that feeling of helplessness was very profound for me."</p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e203b9224306a5ef57ead14-1889/screen shot 2020-01-16 at 23003 am.png" alt="jonny kim" /><p>Despite an impressive portfolio, Kim said none of his career decisions were prompted by chasing medals or to seek approval, and that it is imperative to "follow your heart."</p><p>"For me ... after having some intense wartime experiences where I lost a lot of good friends that I've loved, I made a promise to those guys who died - that I'd do everything in my power for the rest of my life to make this world a better place," Kim said to Business Insider. "Because those men were great human beings and they left a void."</p><p>"I've chased that, going into medicine," Kim added. "It wasn't as simple as, 'I want to do this because it's an accomplishment.' It's never been that shallow for me."</p><p>As a father of three kids, Kim says he makes sure he imparts that outlook on life for his children: "My only expectation, which I tell my kids very, very often, is that they follow their heart."</p><p>"My kids, I love it when they tell me, 'Abba, I want to be an artist,'" Kim said, referring to the casual, Korean word for "dad." "And I say, that is awesome ... I just want you to be happy and to follow your heart."</p><p>"I never want my children to ever feel like they need to be a SEAL, or that they need to go into medicine, or be an astronaut in order to please me - because I don't think that's very fair. I just want them to live their own lives. I don't hesitate at every opportunity to remind my children of that."</p>

Jonny Kim, former Navy SEAL and second-generation Korean-American who earned a Harvard medical degree, took the spotlight when he became a NASA astronaut. A Texas senator said Kim's accomplishments made him feel "horribly, horribly inadequate."</p><p>"What the heck have we been doing with our lives," Republican Sen. Ted Cruz jokingly said of himself and his colleague, Sen. John Cornyn, during a NASA graduation ceremony on Friday.</p><p>While Kim is quick to downplay his Navy SEAL experience; medical degree from a prestigious university; and his new membership among NASA astronauts, his journey was not conventional.</p><p>His mother and father immigrated to the US in the early 1980s, where they settled in South Central Los Angeles. Like many South Korean immigrants in California, they opened up a liquor store.</p><p>Roughly 723 licensed liquor outlets operated in South Los Angeles among the 500,000 residents in the early 1990s, well beyond the <a href="https://www.csmonitor.com/1993/0615/15012.html">state limit laws</a> that limited one per 2,500 residents. According to a <a href="https://graphics.latimes.com/towergraphic-la-me-riot-liquor/">Los Angeles Times</a> analysis, 625 liquor stores in the area were believed to be owned by Koreans in 1992.</p><p>Kim's father did not have a formal education and grew up in a impoverished, rural area in South Korea. According to Kim, he did not have a formal education and he never received an education beyond high school.</p><p>"My father was the classic epitome of a very hard immigrant-worker," Kim told Insider in an interview. "He made up for his lack of education by working really hard ... He worked six days a week for as long as I can remember."</p><p>Kim's mother also worked as a part-time substitute school teacher for an elementary school, while raising Kim and his younger brother.</p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e20e03e24306a6d2c5e1e07-1903/screen shot 2020-01-16 at 21306 pm.png" alt="jonny kim" /><h2>'High school was interesting'</h2><p>Kim said he was a shy kid who struggled to make friends in high school and that few would have foreseen his future success, including himself.</p><p>"High school was interesting," he said. "For a lot of people, high school was just a big social experiment, and I think the value of high school was not so much learning how to be a great student ... but I think it's learning how to interact with people and be social."</p><p>"I would say that in that endeavor, I completely failed," Kim added.</p><p>Kim received high marks in his classes, which included several Advanced Placement (AP) courses, and appeared to be on-track to attend a university after graduating from high school. But Kim said there was something missing in his life and he "knew my heart wasn't there."</p><p>"I was a really low-confident kid," Kim said. "I did have friends from playing sports - I played water polo and I swam. But at the heart of it, I was really scared of talking to people, and making friends, and making relationships."</p><p>"I remember lunch time in high school being one of the worst times of the day, because I never wanted to be seen not having any friends to eat with - and I would roam the halls aimlessly," he added. "So high school was a formative time for me and I wouldn't say the highlight of my life."</p><p>The only thing he was "driven" to do as a teenager Kim said, was to join the Navy and become a SEAL.</p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e20e0d6b6d52d6df2338d22-2400/screen shot 2020-01-16 at 21609 pm.png" alt="jonny kim" /><h2>'It's not too late, you can come home'</h2><p>As a 16-year-old yearning to enlist in the Navy, breaking the news to his mother was not easy. The decision to enlist would forgo any plans for college, and there was still a chance he would be forced to take a different job in the Navy if he failed out of SEAL training.</p><p>"I remember when I first told her ... she cried," Kim said. "She told me, 'You're so smart, why would you do something like that.'"</p><p>"That was really unusual for me, when I went to my mother and I said, 'I know what I want to do, and I'm going to do it.' And there wasn't anyone or anything to talk me out of it. It was the first time I set my sights on a dream."</p><p>His mother initially pressed him to join one of the service academies, which includes a free college education and at least four years of military service. But Kim says he was adamant on enlisting. Enlisted service members are not required to have a college degree, and are paid <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-military-service-members-make-2019-2">significantly less</a> than their commissioned counterparts, who are typically required to have completed college.</p><p>"I want to enlist," Kim recalled telling his mother. "I want to be in the deep trenches, from the bottom, working my way up."</p><p>When Kim was 18 and finished with high school, his mother dropped him off at the Military Entrance Processing Station in Los Angeles, one of the last vestiges of civilian life before his transition into the military. Kim's father had recently died, and was not alive to see his son join the Navy.</p><p>"My mother, with tears in her eyes, [said], 'It's not too late, you can come home and we'll do this family business,' Kim said. "And for a fleeting moment, I considered it."</p><p>But Kim eventually closed the door and told her, "I have to do this."</p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e20e6a024306a74302caf35-846/screen shot 2020-01-16 at 24038 pm.png" alt="Screen Shot 2020 01 16 at 2.40.38 PM" /><h2>Immigrant families</h2><p>Kim understands his mother's concerns and theorized there may have been cultural differences to account for.</p><p>Kim said that some parents, particularly those who immigrated to the US under difficult circumstances, may think their sacrifices would have been made in vain, if their children enlisted in the military right out of high school.</p><p>"I know certainly that my parents sacrificed a lot to come to America, and to ... start a new life for their family and their future families," Kim said.</p><p>"At least with first-generation Asian-American immigrants, parents put so much risk in work and to provide the best for their children," Kim said, adding that some metrics for success could come exclusively in the form of practicing law or becoming a physician.</p><p>People of Asian heritage are one of the most under-represented groups in the US military. According to 2017 <a href="https://download.militaryonesource.mil/12038/MOS/Reports/2017-demographics-report.pdf">report</a> on the military's demographics, 4.4% of the over 2 million US service members were Asian.</p><p>Over 70% US service members were white, and 17% were black or African-American. Hispanics and Latinos, who were not considered a minority race by the Office of Management and Budget, comprised of 14% of US service members.</p><p>Kim's mother eventually supported his decision and is now proud of her son. She joined him for his graduation ceremonies from the Navy and Harvard Medical School.</p><p>"She's very proud and happy I went with it," Kim said, adding that "it's natural for any parent to have hesitation" when their children decide to join the military.</p><p>"My parents wanted the best for me, they knew I did well in school, so they wanted me to have the classic white-collar job. How an insecure teenager became a NASA-trained Navy SEAL, and convinced his Korean-American mom to allow him to join the military

NASA has selected an initial team of 18 astronauts, including Indian-American astronaut <keyword id="4626895" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Raja-Chari">Raja Chari</keyword>, to form the <keyword id="10408823" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="artemis-team">Artemis Team</keyword> and help pave the way for the next lunar missions, including sending the first woman and next man to walk on the lunar surface in 2024.<br /><br />Vice President of the US Mike Pence introduced the members of the Artemis Team on Wednesday during the eighth National Space Council meeting at NASA's Kennedy Space Centre in Florida.<br /><br />"I give you the heroes who will carry us to the Moon and beyond -- the Artemis Generation," said Vice President Mike Pence. <br /><br />"It is amazing to think that the next man and first woman on the Moon are among the names that we just read. The Artemis Team astronauts are the future of American space exploration -- and that future is bright."<br /><br />The astronauts on the Artemis Team come from a diverse range of backgrounds, expertise, and experience. <br /><br />The agency's modern lunar exploration programme will land the first woman and next man on the Moon in 2024 and establish a sustainable human lunar presence by the end of the decade.<br /><br />NASA said it will announce flight assignments for astronauts later, pulling from the Artemis Team.<br /><br />The US space agency said that additional Artemis Team members, including international partner astronauts, will join this group, as needed.<br /><br />Chari joined the astronaut corps in 2017. A colonel in the US Air Force, he was raised in Cedar Falls, Iowa. <br /><br />He received a bachelor's degree in astronautical engineering and a master's degree in aeronautics and astronautics. <br /><br />The US Naval Test Pilot School graduate worked on F-15E upgrades and then the F-35 development programme, before coming to NASA.<br /><br />His father Sreenivas V. Chari immigrated from Hyderabad.<br /><br />"We are incredibly grateful for the president and vice president's support of the Artemis programme, as well as the bipartisan support for all of NASA's science, aeronautics research, technology development, and human exploration goals," said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine. <br /><br />"As a result, we're excited to share this next step in exploration -- naming the Artemis Team of astronauts who will lead the way, which includes the first woman and next man to walk on the lunar surface."<br /><br />The astronauts of the Artemis Team will help NASA prepare for the coming Artemis missions, which begin next year working with the agency's commercial partners as they develop human landing systems; assisting in the development of training; defining hardware requirements; and consulting on technical development. <br /><br />"There is so much exciting work ahead of us as we return to the moon, and it will take the entire astronaut corps to make that happen," Chief Astronaut Pat Forrester said.<br /><br />"Walking on the lunar surface would be a dream come true for any one of us, and any part we can play in making that happen is an honour."<br /><br />The Artemis Team members also include Joseph Acaba, Kayla Barron, Matthew Dominick, Victor Glover, Warren Hoburg, Jonny Kim, Christina Hammock Koch, Kjell Lindgren, Nicole A. Many of them lack health insurance too, even further complicating the US's efforts to combat the illness.</p><p>The pandemic is even affecting space travel. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/coronavirus-nasa-limits-commercial-crew-astronaut-contact-covid-19-outbreak-2020-3">NASA is limiting access to the astronauts</a> scheduled to travel on SpaceX's upcoming mission called Demo 2. Shifting Gears: Coronavirus has airlines on bankruptcy watch

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="6360409" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nasa">NASA</keyword> on Wednesday announced the 18 astronauts chosen for its <keyword id="244551" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Artemis">Artemis</keyword> moon-landing missions. </li><li>The astronauts include nine men and nine women — one of whom could become the first woman ever to walk on the <keyword id="42440" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Moon">moon</keyword>.</li><li>NASA aims to launch people to the lunar surface as early as 2024.</li></ul><p>NASA has announced the 18 astronauts who will make up the core group in its Artemis program: a series of missions aimed at landing humans back on the moon.</p><p>If the program succeeds, one of the nine female astronauts the agency has selected will become the first woman ever to step foot on the lunar surface. One of the nine men NASA named, meanwhile, will become the first to stand on the moon in over 50 years. The group was selected from NASA's <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/astronauts/biographies/active">47 active</a> astronauts.</p><p>"My fellow Americans, I give you the heroes of the future, who will carry us back to the moon and beyond - the Artemis generation," Pence <a href="https://twitter.com/NASA/status/1336764293853810689">said at a meeting</a> of the National <keyword id="41531" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="space">Space</keyword> Council on Wednesday, at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. </p><div type="image" title="Anne McClain" height="2646" width="3858" msid="79654191" hostid="261"></div><p>Two of the astronauts chosen, Victor Glover and Kate Rubins, are currently on board the International Space Station. Glover is the pilot of SpaceX's Crew-1 mission, and <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/image-feature/expedition-64-flight-engineer-kate-rubins-of-nasa/">Rubins is</a> a flight engineer for Expedition 64. Glover is also the first Black <keyword id="34120" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="astronaut">astronaut</keyword> to serve on a long-term mission aboard space station. </p><p>"We represent all walks of life in America. And every kid in America, and across the world even, now needs to look and say, you know, if you look like me, I can do this," astronaut Anne McClain, another Artemis team member, <a href="https://twitter.com/NASA/status/1336786188607221760">said at the meeting</a>.</p><p>McClain, who has logged more than 2,000 flight hours on 20 different types of aircraft, spent <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/astronauts/biographies/anne-c-mcclain/biography">204 days</a> aboard the space station from December 2018 to June 2019.</p><p>The Artemis program consists of three missions that would culminate in the first crewed moon landing since 1972. NASA's larger aim is to establish a consistent human presence on the moon by the end of the decade, which will involve building a lunar base and a moon-orbiting space station.</p><p>The group of Artemis astronauts also includes Jessica Meir and Christina Koch, who participated in the first <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-first-all-female-spacewalk-watch-live-2019-10">all-female spacewalk</a> in 2019, and Joe Acaba, a spaceflight veteran who has flown on three missions and was the first person of Puerto Rican heritage to be named a NASA astronaut. </p><div type="image" title="crew 1 crew dragon spacex astronauts soichi noguchi victor glover" height="1280" width="1920" msid="79654192" hostid="261"></div><p>The other astronauts in the group are: Kayla Barron, Raja Chari, Matthew Dominick, Woody Hoburg, Jonny Kim, Kjell Lindgren, Nicole Mann, Jasmin Moghbeli, Frank Rubio, Scott Tingle, Jessica Watkins, and Stephanie Wilson.</p><p>None has been assigned to a specific mission yet, and NASA may add more team members in the future, including astronauts from other countries. But training for a lunar voyage will take years, which is why NASA named the team members now. </p><p>"Spaceflight is not for the impatient. It's dangerous, it's very complicated," Nicole Mann, who is also slated to fly the first crewed test of Boeing's CST-100 Starliner spaceship in June, <a href="https://www.nationalgeographic.com/science/2020/12/one-of-these-astronauts-may-be-the-first-woman-on-the-moon/">told National Geographic</a>. "We have a group of people that are working together, not only in the United States, but really in the international community that are going to come together to make this successful."</p><h2><strong>A crew of astronauts living and working on the moon</strong></h2><p>After the Artemis program's first lunar landing, NASA hopes to send additional astronauts to the moon each year.</p><p>Eventually, the agency wants to build an orbiting station similar to the International Space Station, but in the moon's orbit. NASA also plans to experiment with mining ice on the moon that could be used to create rocket fuel for deep-space journeys. </p><p>Additionally, astronauts who visit the moon could test life-support technologies that could be used on a future mission to Mars.</p><div type="image" title="base camp" height="736" width="1304" msid="79654193" hostid="261"></div><p>The Artemis program calls for two preliminary missions before the moon landing.</p><p>The first, Artemis 1, would be an uncrewed launch of an Orion space capsule atop NASA's forthcoming mega-rocket, the Space Launch System (SLS). The spacecraft would stay in the moon's orbit for three days as a test, then fly back. NASA's current timeline suggests that mission could launch in November 2021. </p><p>After that, Artemis 2 - slated to launch in August 2023 - would be the program's first crewed moon mission. In a lunar flyby, the Orion capsule would carry four astronauts around the moon's far side. That crew would go farther into space than any humans before them on a 10-day mission.</p><p>Then the Artemis 3 mission would send four astronauts aboard an Orion spacecraft into lunar orbit. From there, a lunar lander would take two of the astronauts to the moon's surface. They'd stay for about a week, collecting moon rocks and conducting a range of experiments. Then those astronauts would blast back off, rejoin their fellow crew members in the moon's orbit, and head home.</p><h2><strong>Artemis' timing remains in flux</strong></h2><p>Congress has not yet provided NASA with the $28 billion the agency says it needs over the next four years to make a speedy moon landing happen. </p><p>So president-elect <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/biden-agenda-for-nasa-space-exploration-2020-11">Joe Biden's administration</a> is likely to push back the aggressive timeline that President Donald Trump established by several years. The modified goals would then align with a <a href="https://science.house.gov/imo/media/doc/NASA_AUTH_01_xml.pdf">proposed bill</a> by the House <keyword id="41551" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="100" keywordseo="science">Science</keyword> Committee that would aim to land astronauts on the moon by 2028 instead of 2024.</p><p>Biden appears to support the Artemis program overall, though. He <a href="https://medium.com/@JoeBiden/my-statement-on-the-passing-of-john-hume-973d45770241">wrote in August</a> that he hopes to lead "a bold space program that will continue to send astronaut heroes to expand our exploration and scientific frontiers." </p>
