<p>Now, <a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/03/01/publisher-pulls-jonah-lehrer-s-how-we-decide-from-stores.html?source=socialflow&amp;account=thedailybeast&amp;medium=twitter">according to Michael Moynihan at The Daily Beast</a>, the publisher has decided to pull Lehrer's second book, "How We Decide," from stores as well, and will offer refunds to customers. The decision comes "a<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">fter an internal review uncovered significant problems with the book," <a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/03/01/publisher-pulls-jonah-lehrer-s-how-we-decide-from-stores.html?source=socialflow&amp;account=thedailybeast&amp;medium=twitter">Moynihan reports.</a> T</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">he publisher didn't reveal the exact reasons for their  decision to him.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">However, after <a href="http://www.tabletmag.com/jewish-news-and-politics/107779/jonah-lehrers-deceptions">uncovering the fabricated Bob Dylan quotes</a> in "Imagine," Moynihan looked into "How We Decide." He independently uncovered issues with passages purportedly from an interview with United Airlines Pilot Al Haynes that were <a href="http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/03/01/publisher-pulls-jonah-lehrer-s-how-we-decide-from-stores.html?source=socialflow&amp;account=thedailybeast&amp;medium=twitter">nearly identical</a> to a lecture he had delivered nearly two decades earlier.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Lehrer's first book, "Proust Was A Neuroscientist," did not have any problems in its review and will stay in print.</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">This news comes just 2 weeks after the Knight Foundation controversially paid Lehrer $20,000 to speak at one of their conferences, which they <a href="http://www.knightfoundation.org/blogs/knightblog/2013/2/13/knight-foundation-regrets-paying-lehrer-speaking-fee/">later said</a> they regretted. <br /></span></p>

<p>B<span style="line-height: 1.5em;">uzzfeed CEO and co-founder Jonah Peretti and investor Chris Dixon spoke at San Francisco's <a href="http://www.commonwealthclub.org/events/featured-programs/inforum">Commonwealth Club</a> on Wednesday, where Dixon asked Peretti about founding Buzzfeed and how he got started.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">To tell that story Peretti explained how his first project, The Huffington Post, came to be.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Before anyone had heard of HuffPo or Buzzfeed listicles, Peretti was visiting Nike's website, designing a custom sneaker.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Peretti, apparently not a Nike fan, wanted to print the word "sweatshop" on a pair of sneakers.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">When he tried to order the shoes, Nike emailed him and said the word sweatshop was "inappropriate slang."</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Peretti argued, using the dictionary definition of sweatshop, that it was a word like any other.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Nike eventually told Peretti it reserved the right to reject any order for whatever reason, but Peretti took his interactions with Nike and threw them <a href="http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/blnike.htm">into an email</a> that he forwarded on to everyone he knew.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">The email went viral, and it got Peretti thinking about making content online and what it takes to make content go viral.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Peretti said soon after that he was meeting up with Arianna Huffington and Kenneth Lehrer, with whom he founded HuffPo.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">His success at HuffPo and AOL's acquisition of the company in 2005 led him to start Buzzfeed, which then was just "an experiment lab," not intended to make money.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">He also spoke about how the future of media is writing for a very diverse segmented audience, as opposed to one mass audience. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">You can see this at Buzzfeed: a lot of its content is meant to appeal to a very specific group of people, like </span><a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/chelseypippin/faces-all-babysitters-will-immediately-recgonise#.pjL4k2Z4E">babysitters</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> or </span><a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/katienotopoulos/freezing-office-syndrome#.hpQrZwYrB">people working in very cold offices</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">. People are much more likely to pass around a story that echoes their personal experiences than a story that feels like it was written for everybody.</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Peretti's interviewer, Chris Dixon, led Andreessen Horowitz's $50 million investment in Buzzfeed last summer, which reportedly valued the media company at $850 million. </span></p>

Presumably, you've never met the person before, or only chatted with them briefly - meaning <em>everything</em> is potential fodder for discussion.</p><p><em>Where'd you grow up? Do you like your job? How's your relationship with your sister?</em> And so on.</p><p>Then, suddenly, it's 10 years later, and you're married with a kid and a mortgage. At this point, you know your partner like a book and, aside from what time the babysitter's coming and who wants which leftovers for dinner, there is <em>nothing</em> left to discuss.</p><p>This is where the 10-minute rule comes in.</p><p>The rule is a suggestion from sociology professor and relationship expert Terri Orbuch.</p><p>As Orbuch describes it in her book "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0176WNQEQ/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&amp;btkr=1">5 Simple Steps to Take Your Marriage From Good to Great</a>," the rule is a "daily briefing in which you and your spouse make time to talk about anything under the sun -<em> except</em> kids, works, and household tasks or responsibilities."</p><p>Orbuch developed the rule after learning that most of the happy couples she studied know their spouse "intimately" - outside the bedroom - and make time often to exchange intimate knowledge.</p><p>According to Orbuch, learning new information about your partner makes things feel fresh and new again, and "mimics the emotional and physical state you were in during the first few years of your marriage."</p><p>Presumably, it can also replicate the less stilted parts of your first few dates, when every sentence out of your partner's mouth was a revelation that led you down a romantic rabbit hole of curiosity.</p><p>In the book, Orbuch offers suggestions for what to talk about during your daily 10-minute briefing. Generally, you should touch on friends, stressors, life dreams, and values.</p><p>As for specific questions, you might want to ask:</p><ul><li>Do you think you are/were closer to your mom or dad? Why?</li><li>What age do you feel like inside? As Orbuch says, "People change. People develop. People forget."</p><p>Some couples know this inherently - and their desire to keep abreast of all the ways their partner is growing can be inspiration for the rest of us.</p><p>In "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N6PBIA2/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&amp;btkr=1">The Real Thing</a>," a book by former Washington Post weddings reporter Ellen McCarthy (where we first learned about the 10-minute rule), McCarthy writes that a groom once told her, a week before his wedding, that he was still learning about his bride and probably always would be.</p><p>And in journalist Jonah Lehrer's "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0176M3YKC/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&amp;btkr=1&amp;tag=bisafetynet-20">A Book About Love</a>," Lehrer writes about a couple whose <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-find-the-perfect-job-and-partner-2016-9">marriage was arranged</a>; the wife said of her husband that she would always be getting to know him, as long as they were together. As Lehrer concludes, romantic attachments require "endless work."</p><p>Bottom line: Sometimes life gets in the way of love. How the '10-minute rule' can change your marriage for the better

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/561d70ad9dd7cc1b008c19c1-1151/couple-bride-groom-wedding.jpg" alt="couple bride groom wedding" data-mce-source="Flickr / @ina (Irina Patrascu Gheorghita )" data-link="https://www.flickr.com/photos/angel_ina/3837963118/" /><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/angel_ina/3837963118/">Flickr / @ina (Irina Patrascu Gheorghita )</a></span></p></div><p></p></div></div>I've been reading "<a href="https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0176M3YKC/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&amp;btkr=1">A Book About Love</a>," the journalist Jonah Lehrer's new exploration of the different forms love can take and how it makes our lives worthwhile.</p><p>In the chapter on marriage, Lehrer cites some fascinating research on the nature of love in arranged marriages: Apparently, they're <a href="http://web.calstatela.edu/faculty/pregan/Regan,Lakhanpal,Anguiano-2012.pdf">just as happy and satisfying</a> - if not more so - as free-choice marriages.</p><p>In fact, Lehrer highlights a <a href="http://psycnet.apa.org/psycinfo/1985-19991-001">few studies</a> that found love can and does <a href="https://www.jstor.org/stable/23644606?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents">grow over time</a> in arranged marriages. Even if you don't love your partner the minute you meet them, 10 years later, there's a good chance you will.</p><p>When I dug into some of these studies, I started to feel a little bit of research deja vu - as if I'd come across these findings before. I hadn't.</p><p>Eventually, I figured out that these results seemed remarkably similar to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/passion-for-work-is-achieved-two-ways-2015-8">research I covered</a> last year, on how people develop passion for their job. According to <a href="http://psp.sagepub.com/content/41/10/1411.abstract">that study</a>, led by Patricia Chen at the University of Michigan, people who believe that they can <em>grow</em> passionate about their job over time wind up just as happy as those who believe they have to <em>find</em> the ideal job that ignites their passion right from the start.</p><p>Let me be clear: I'm not suggesting that, based on this science, you take a lousy gig or propose to a random person you meet on the street, assuming your passion and love will blossom in time. You shouldn't.</p><p>For me at least, the key takeaway from all this research is that <strong>the development of love and passion - for your partner or your job - takes effort</strong>.</p><p>Lehrer interviewed a couple whose marriage was arranged, and the wife said of her husband that she would always be getting to know him, as long as they were together. In other words, as Lehrer says, romantic attachments require "endless work."</p><p>Even in free-choice marriages, Lehrer says it's hard work maintaining romantic love and avoiding habituation - a.k.a. getting used to the person you married and watching the sparks fade. That work can involve making an effort to say something nice to your partner regularly or sharing the housework equitably.</p><p>In other words, even if you choose your partner thinking they're your soulmate or at least someone well-suited to you, marriage isn't a sit-back-and-enjoy-the-ride kind of thing. In Chen's study, people who believed they could develop passion for their job over time were more likely to say they'd take a high-paying, less-enjoyable position than people who believed they had to be passionate about their job from the start.</p><p>But presumably, they wouldn't just accept that their job would satisfy them on a financial level and leave them bored and frustrated on a personal level. They would put in effort to make their job more stimulating and fulfilling, so that it satisfied all their needs.</p><p>Maybe that means engaging in what psychologists call "<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/turn-a-boring-job-into-a-meaningful-career-job-crafting-2015-12">job crafting</a>," or tweaking aspects of your jobs so that it's more meaningful and lines up better with your personal values.</p><p>In <a href="http://faculty.som.yale.edu/amywrzesniewski/documents/Craftingajob_Revisioningemployees_000.pdf">one study</a>, members of a hospital cleaning crew performed behaviors that weren't included in their job descriptions, like spending time with distressed patients. Those employees found their work more meaningful than those who said they were there mainly for the money. Job crafters went out of their way to find meaning, and perhaps even passion, where they otherwise wouldn't have existed.</p><p>I can't emphasize enough that if you're in an unhappy marriage or a soul-sucking job, there's no shame in leaving or looking for other options. But if you see every relationship and job as <em>potentially</em> perfect for you - especially if it once was or if it satisfies certain needs of yours - you'll be more likely to work on making it so.</p><p>It's not the most romantic take on love and passion. In a perfect world, we'd all be living with our soulmates and working our dream jobs.
