<p>He listed it last year for $6.4 million, so someone got a deal for two 3500 square foot 17th floor apartments put together in the Upper East Side's lovely Cielo building.</p>
<p>And with that comes floor to ceiling windows that offer breathtaking river and city views. Not too shabby.</p>

They act out of self-interest, they run cost-benefit analyses, they don't make mistakes. If they're deciding whether or not they want something, they figure out what it will cost and how happy they'll be if they have it, and they act - or vote - accordingly. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Of course, people in the real world don't quite work like that.</span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The upcoming Brexit vote is a good example of individuals diverging from this kind of purely rational behavior, according to Richard Thaler, a behavioral economist at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. The British citizens who are campaigning to leave the EU aren't acting or thinking the way traditional economics would expect them to. </span></p><p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Standard economics would think that voters would be making the kind of calculation that the op-ed writers and the Wall Street Journal or the Economist are doing - crunching a bunch of numbers and saying the pros and cons of being in the EU and so forth and so on," </span><a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/video/richard-thaler-brits-are-voting-with-their-guts/00CDC7BC-4A32-45E4-8556-BAAE4CD41596.html"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Thaler said in a video interview with MarketWatch</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;">. "You know, if you can find a hundred voters in Britain that have made that calculation, I'd like to talk to them."</span></p><p><a href="http://www.chicagobooth.edu/faculty/directory/t/richard-h-thaler"><span style="font-weight: 400;">Thaler</span></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> has devoted much of his economic research to the psychology of decision-making, which "lies in the gap between psychology and economics." Economist Richard Thaler: Brexit is a perfect example of irrational behavior

<p>This is significant because the tech giant's stock is normally a hedge fund favorite.</p>
<p>So far we have four funds that have sold out of their stakes completely in Q4.  </p>
<p>Here's the rundown: </p>
<ul>
<li>John Thaler's JAT Capital exited it position in Apple during Q4.  The fund held <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1040273/000108514613000612/0001085146-13-000612.txt">189,098 shares at the end of Q3. </a></li>
<li>"Tiger Cub" Stephen Mandel dropped his entire Apple stake in the fourth quarter. Lone Pine held more than 805,000 shares at the end of Q3, <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1061165/000090266413000946/0000902664-13-000946.txt">according to a 13F.</a></li>
<li>Dan Loeb's Third Point LLC also sold its Apple stake in Q4.  Third Point had 710,000 shares at the end of Q3, according to a 13F filing.</li>
<li>"Tiger Cub" Andreas Halvorsen's Viking Global <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1103804/000110380413000004/0001103804-13-000004.txt">dumped its entire Apple stake in Q4</a>, the filing shows.  The hedge fund owned <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1103804/000110380412000035/0001103804-12-000035.txt">1,094,000 shares</a> at the end of Q3.</li>
<li><keyword id="1106044" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="John-Burbank">John Burbank</keyword>'s Passport Capital sold all its stake in the fourth quarter, according to a 13F. The fund owned 60,736 shares for the quarter ended 9/30/2012, <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1352428/000117266113000543/passportcapital4q12.txt">according to a 13F.</a></li>
<li><keyword id="650345" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Eric-Mindich">Eric Mindich</keyword>'s <keyword id="498416" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Eton-Park">Eton Park</keyword> Capital Management sold all of its Apple stake in the fourth quarter, <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1314588/000131458813000004/ep123112.txt">according to a 13F filing with the SEC. </a> The hedge fund had 250,000 shares at the end of the third-quarter, <a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1314588/000131458812000008/0001314588-12-000008.txt">according to that 13F</a>.</li>
<li>Barry Rosenstein's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/jana-partners-dumps-apple-2013-2">JANA Partners</a> sold its stake in Q4. <span>At the end of Q3, the hedge fund held 143,148 shares of the tech giant, </span><a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1159159/000090266412001463/p12-1802form13fhr.txt">the Q3 13F filing shows</a>. <span><br /></span></li>
<li>Leon <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/cooperman-sells-apple-buys-facebook-2013-2?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+typepad%2Falleyinsider%2Fsilicon_alley_insider+(Silicon+Alley+Insider)">Cooperman's Omega Advisors</a> dumped its stake. <span>He previously had 266,404 shares of the tech giant's stock at the end of the third quarter, </span><a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/898382/000089457912000321/0000894579-12-000321.txt">according to a filing</a><span>. </span></li>

Here Are All The Hedge Funds That Are Completely Getting Out Of Apple

<ul class="summary-list"><li><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bed-bath-and-beyond-rise-and-fall-photos-2020-1">Bed Bath &amp; Beyond</a> CEO Jonathan Johnson is stepping down from his role, the company said Monday.</li><li>The departure came suddenly, though the company said Johnson and Beyond parted under "mutual agreement."</li></ul><p><a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/overstock-bed-bath-and-beyond-rebranding-is-brilliant-move-ceo-2023-6">Bed Bath &amp; Beyond</a>, formerly known as Overstock.com, has a new CEO as well as a new name.</p><p>Jonathan Johnson, who has been the company's top executive since 2019, stepped down from the role, the company said on Monday, the same day it officially changed its name. Johnson led the company's name change and has said that he looked at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/overstock-ceo-says-was-jealous-bed-bath-and-beyond-name-2023-8">Bed Bath &amp; Beyond's name "jealously for several years."</a></p><p>Beyond president, David Nielsen, will be interim CEO until the company can find someone to fill the role permanently, the company said.</p><p>The transition appeared abrupt. Johnson had previously planned to speak with members of the media in New York on Monday, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2023/11/06/bed-bath-beyond-ceo-quits-amid-overstock-transition.html">CNBC reported.</a></p><p>Johnson's resignation was the result of a "mutual agreement" between him and the company, the company said in a statement.</p><p>"Following the recent acquisition of the Bed Bath &amp; Beyond brand and our corporate renaming as Beyond, Inc., the Board, and Jonathan determined that this is the ideal time for a transition in leadership to guide the company forward," Beyond board chair Allison Abraham said.</p><p>"As the company turns the page to become Beyond, now is the right time for me to also turn the page to the next chapter in my career," Johnson said in the company's press release.</p><p>Beyond did not immediately respond to Insider's request for additional comment on Johnson's departure.</p><p>Johnson's departure comes after hedge fund JAT Capital, which has a 9.6% stake in Beyond, demanded last week that the company remove him as CEO, <a target="_blank" href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/hedge-fund-jat-calls-overstock-172224910.html?g">Reuters reported on Friday.</a></p><p>Johnson "has performed poorly," both when it comes to communicating with investors as well as judging by the company's financial performance, JAT founder John Thaler wrote in a letter on Thursday.</p><p>Thaler wrote that Marcus Lemonis, who has starred on television shows such as CNBC's The Profit and is CEO of Camping World, should become Beyond's new CEO.</p><p>Overstock said in June that it would change its name after <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bed-bath-beyond-poised-to-join-list-of-zombie-brands-2023-6">acquiring the rights to Bed Bath &amp; Beyond's name</a>, trademarks, websites, mobile apps, and other elements of branding. Bed Bath &amp; Beyond formerly was a chain of stores that sold home goods around the US. Beyond's stores were not part of the deal.</p>

Bed Bath & Beyond just removed the CEO who led its transition from Overstock.com

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Mitch McConnell froze once again during a press conference on Wednesday.</li><li>Doctors have speculated that the Senate Minority Leader may be experiencing seizures.</li></ul><p>Doctors have speculated that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell may be having seizures after he awkwardly <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mitch-mcconnell-freezes-up-again-press-conference-video-2023-8">froze up again</a> during a press conference.</p><p>McConnell, 81, was taking a reporter's question about running for reelection during a news conference on Wednesday when he suddenly appeared disoriented and confused.</p>  <blockquote class="twitter-tweet blockquote" data-lang="en" data-cards="" data-conversation="undefined"> —Hannah Thomas (@HannahPThomas) <a href="https://twitter.com/mims/statuses/1696936240040321474">August 30, 2023</a> </blockquote><p>"Leader McConnell felt momentarily lightheaded and paused during his press conference today," a spokesperson told CNN, adding that he would be consulting a physician before his next event.</p><p>Last month, McConnell had a similarly awkward moment when he abruptly<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mitch-mcconnell-stops-speaking-abruptly-is-helped-away-video-2023-7"> stopped speaking during a press conference</a> at the Capitol. At the time, an aide gave the same explanation to Insider, saying that McConnell "felt lightheaded."</p><p>Both moments have drawn speculation that McConnell is unwell, with three doctors telling news outlets that his spells of disorientation and confusion might be indicative of seizures. The physicians based their assessments on viewing the video of McConnell, and none of them examined him.</p><p>These spells are evidently more severe than simply somebody losing their train of thought, said Dr. David Thaler, neurologist-in-chief at Tufts Medical Center, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8oSSsCU88E" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in an interview with WCVB-TV.</a></p><p>He added: "This looks different in duration and severity, where he really seems to have lost the ability to communicate momentarily."</p><p>Thaler said the "most likely explanation is little, tiny seizures, which are electrical changes in the brain."</p><p>The supposed seizures could be connected to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mitch-mcconnell-health-unreported-falls-face-plant-airport-helsinki-senate-2023-7">a series of falls</a> and <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/mar/13/mitch-mcconnell-released-from-hospital-concussion">a concussion in March</a> experienced by McConnell, Thaler told WCVB-TV.</p><p>"I don't think whatever is causing this to happen caused the fall, but the fall and the head injury could theoretically be related to these episodes," he explained.</p><p>Similarly, Dr. Keith Vossel, a professor of neurology at the University of California, Los Angeles, <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-12462791/Are-mini-seizures-Mitch-McConnells-frightening-freeze-episodes-Doctor-says-knock-effects-concussion-earlier-year-blame.html">told DailyMail.com</a> that he also suspects seizures could be the explanation.</p><p>Vossel told the news outlet: "So, to me, this looks like an absence seizure."</p><p>Absence seizures, or petit mal seizures, can cause somebody to lose awareness of their surroundings and to become momentarily unresponsive, the neurologist said, per DailyMail.com.</p><p><a href="https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/epilepsy/absence-seizures">According to Johns Hopkins Medicine,</a> these seizures are a type of epilepsy caused by abnormal brain activity that can be recognized by a blank stare that lasts for a few seconds. </p><p>Vossel said that age is a major risk factor for these types of seizures, more so than experiencing a fall, per DailyMail.com.</p><p>However, Dr. Jonathan Reiner, a professor of medicine at George Washington University, said in <a href="https://www.breitbart.com/clips/2023/08/30/cnns-reiner-mitch-mcconnell-likely-having-seizures/">an interview with CNN</a> that concussion would make experiencing absence seizures relatively unsurprisingly.</p><p>"The Senator had a really traumatic brain injury in March when he fell," he said, per CNN. "About 10% of people who have a big enough injury to be hospitalized after a head injury like that will subsequently have things like a seizure, and that's what it looks like to me."</p><p>Insider contacted McConnell's office for comment but did not immediately receive a response.</p>

In this case, Amazon is citing Trump's comments as evidence that the Pentagon's process for awarding the $10 billion contract was inherently biased, given <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-blames-trump-touts-technical-superiority-over-microsoft-2019-12">the commander-in-chief's very public antipathy</a> toward Amazon and its founder.</p><p>As Julie Bort writes, Amazon argues that its experience providing <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-says-cloud-objectively-superior-microsoft-nitro-chip-2019-12">cloud services to the CIA and its proprietary Nitro smart cards</a> made its technology "objectively superior." The only explanation passing Amazon over must be Trump, the company says. But as Bort points out, Amazon's claims to technological supremacy aren't as convincing as they once might have been. Microsoft also has its own smart-card technology and has worked on a smaller cloud project with the CIA.</p><p>While Microsoft's Azure cloud still lags considerably behind Amazon Web Services in market share, the company is prioritizing its cloud business. From AI to security and sales, the Azure A-team is broad and deep.</p><h3>Read the full story here:</h3><h3><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-azure-cloud-power-players-2019-11">Here are 19 of the most important executives leading Microsoft's cloud business as it takes on Amazon Web Services</a></h3><hr /><h3>What does Adam Neumann have to do with your 401(k)?</h3><p>If you thought that only WeWork insiders and venture capital investors felt the impact of the office-sharing company's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-weworks-all-staff-meeting-after-softbank-deal-2019-10">fizzled IPO attempt</a>, Troy Wolverton's lastest report makes for sobering reading. </p><p>Mutual funds, in their quest for better returns, have been adding investments in private tech startups to their portfolios in recent years. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mutual-fund-investments-in-startups-wework-pose-risks-average-investors-2019-12">And that includes WeWork,</a> which until recently was one of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/top-ad-agencies-pitched-for-wework-account-before-failed-ipo-2019-12">the most-hyped startups.</a></p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5d7a8fd62e22af2f653d1e15-1201/wework adam neumann 2 4x3.png" alt="wework adam neumann 2 4x3" /><p>The funds' stakes in these startups are relatively small, in part because regulations cap so-called "illiquid investments" at 15% of a portfolio. One of the funds with the most exposure to WeWork was the John Hancock Mid Cap Stock fund, for which WeWork comprised 0.77% of its investments.</p><p>As Wolverton points out though, even such small investments come with a special risk. The lack of liquidity in private company shares means that funds have an easier time swapping out holdings in public companies, and that can amplify a fund's exposure to sputtering startups. </p><p>Mutual funds don't make it easy to find out which private startups they invested in. It didn't, and you probably don't even realize if your 401(k) took a WeWork hit.</a></h3><hr /><h3>Google's curious disappearing act from Area 120</h3><p>While we're on the subject of transparency and fine print, Rob Price has a look at some <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/google-area-120-apps-dont-clearly-disclose-ownership-2019-12">popular smartphone apps with a secret.</a></p><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5de7bad1fd9db205d91e6b45-1200/google sundar pichai area 120 apps 4x3.png" alt="google sundar pichai area 120 apps 4x3" /><p>These apps, with names like Pigeon and Rivet, are focused on job-hopping, transportation, and education, and they are made by Area 120. If you're reading this, you're more likely than most to know that Area 120 is a Google incubator for new apps. </p><p>But people who don't follow the tech industry closely - who are among the target audience for these apps - likely have no idea that Area 120 has anything to do with Google. And they wouldn't be enlightened when downloading the apps. As Rob notes, there's no mention of corporate ownership when users download or boot up the apps on iPhones. The Google relationship is disclosed on the apps' standalone websites, but how often do people check out websites for apps they download?</p><p>As Rob writes, Google's lack of transparency raises important questions just as Big Tech is under scrutiny:</p><p><em>"Should established firms have a responsibility to make clear when they're behind buzzy new products? How much onus is on ordinary users to thoroughly research apps before installing them? <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5685581fc08a801b008b6383-2646-1985/rtx10w1w.jpg" alt="rich people rain women ascot" data-mce-source="Reuters" /><p class="source"><span>Reuters</span></p></div><p></p></div></div>There has been a rush of hedge funds suddenly converting to so-called "family offices" in the past few months.  </p><p>A <a href="https://www.sec.gov/news/press/2011/2011-134.htm">family office</a> manages only the money of the hedge fund manager, his or her family members, and the money of some of the fund's key employees.</p><p>The sudden switch has come during a period where many funds have struggled for performance. <span>The average hedge fund has fallen 3.48%, </span><a href="https://www.hedgefundresearch.com/hfrx_reg/index.php?fuse=login_bd">according to data from HFR</a><span>.</span></p><p><span><span>Scott Bommer of SAB Capital, which had $1.1 billion in assets at the end of last year, said in a letter he'd return investor money after 17 years of running his fund, </span><a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-12-30/scott-bommer-to-return-money-from-hedge-fund-sab-after-17-years">Bloomberg reported.</a><span> He will now focus on managing his own money, the report said. </span></span></p><p><span><span>The SAB Overseas Fund was down 10.6% through the first eight months of the year, <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-12-30/scott-bommer-to-return-money-from-hedge-fund-sab-after-17-years">according to Bloomberg. </a></span></span></p><h2><span><span>Poor performance</span></span></h2><p>Earlier in the week, Doug Hirsch, the founder of Seneca Capital, said he too would <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hirsch-shuts-down-seneca-fund-2015-12">return all outside investor capital.</a> <span>Seneca makes wagers on corporate events such as mergers and acquisitions and bankruptcies, which is an area has been challenging lately. According to HFR, the average event-driven fund fell </span><a href="https://www.hedgefundresearch.com/hfrx_reg/index.php?fuse=login_bd">6.89%</a><span> this year. Platt cited downward pressure on fee levels, the cost of hiring the best talent and difficulty in meeting the needs of a large number of diverse investors as reasons for making the move. </span></span></p><p>And b<span><span><span>ack in May, </span><a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-05-11/hedge-fund-jat-capital-says-it-s-closing-to-become-family-office">John Thaler wrote to investors</a><span> </span><span>that he would be converting $1.7 billion JAT Capital into a family office so he could spend more time with his "young family." </span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>They join a handful of hedge fund industry titans - including Stanley Druckenmiller, George Soros, and Steve Cohen - who </span><span>have been running their firms as family offices in recent years.</span></span></span></span></p><p>There are a few reasons why a hedge fund manager to transition to a family office, Stan Altshuller, t<span>he cofounder and chief research officer of hedge fund data firm </span><a href="http://www.novus.com/">Novus</a>, told Business Insider. The first is the challenging investment environment. </p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"</span>The most recent bull run has been uncharacteristically difficult for hedge fund managers," he told Business Insider.</p><p>He gave for a bunch of reasons for why it has been so difficult, ranging from limited dispersion between equities, which makes it difficult for manager to make long/short bets, to concerns around global growth that have impacted macro fund managers. And they are finding limited opportunities and jumping on them. <strong>This creates crowded trades that were a major culprit in the 2015 hedge fund underperformance.</strong> Once managers get spooked by, say, an energy price shock, they pare back their risk and realize that their perceived liquidity just dried by since everyone else is selling too. That's when crowded trades can cut deep into manager returns - and they need to curb those losses because investors will scrutinize monthly numbers. <strong>They become short termist forced sellers, not a life any manager wants to live."</strong></p><p>It is also expensive to run outside money below a certain level of assets. </p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"The regulations and onerous reporting requirements from the SEC these days makes it a losing game for managers running under $200 [million]," he said. </span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">There are other reasons too. The hot new hedge fund strategy - stop being a 'hedge fund'

It's uncomfortable and hard, but sometimes those realities must be broken.</strong></li></ul><hr><p>President Donald Trump and the National Rifle Association get something about people that you probably don't, and it's what allows them to manipulate their supporters into hurting themselves and their communities.</p><p>What they understand is that above all else, humans want to feel like they're good people who understand the world they live in and have some control over it.&#xa0;This feature of humanity is the perfect prey for demagogues.&#xa0;</p><p>In order to feel good, aware, and in control, humans have time and time again shown a willingness to bend reality and behave irrationally - that is to say, they will act against their own self interest. They'll do it for extended periods of time, they'll do it contrary to all evidence, amd they'll do it if it's hurting their society, their friends, even their family. They'll do it even if it leaves them isolated and alone.</p><p>Consider the following irrational behavior:</p><ul><li>It is not rational that in the state of Florida it is easier for a 19-year-old <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/02/15/us/ar15-mass-shootings-guns.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">to buy an assault rifle than a handgun</a>. But&#xa0;<span>Nikolas Cruz managed to get the AR-15 with which police say he attacked&#xa0;Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.</span></li><li>It is not rational for the president of the United States to do nothing when 17 people, mostly children, are murdered in an attack by anyone or anything.</li><li>It is even less rational for his supporters to support his inaction - even cheer it - especially since the same kind of attack could easily take place in their own communities.</li><li>But then again, it is irrational for many of Trump's supporters to support the few policies he's been able to enact, like a tax cut which largely benefits the rich at the expense of public services and working-class Americans.</li></ul><p>The NRA and Trump are not practicing voodoo here. They just have to confirm what some people <em>already think is</em> reality. People, it turns out, love to be right.</p><p>The NRA - which <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nra-power-lobbying-statistics-gun-control-2017-10/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">over decades has morphed</a> from an organization that represented sportsmen and hunters to one that represents gun manufacturers - is the world champion of selling the Gospel of control and certainty. As<span>&#xa0;</span><a href="http://massadayoobgroup.com/">Massad Ayoob</a>, a gun writer and instructor, wrote in an issue of Shooting Industry magazine in 1993:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Customers come to you every day out of fear. Fear of what they read in the newspaper. Fear of what they watch on the 11 o'clock news. Fear of the terrible acts of violence they see on the street. Your job, in no uncertain terms, is to sell them confidence in the form of steel and lead."</p><p>If you've ever asked the NRA if they mean to scare people <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/how-america-became-obsessed-with-guns-2016-7">(like I have)</a> they'll tell you they absolutely do mean to scare you, and that it's a good thing.</p><p>It's not. It just suits the NRA to make a world where up is down, big is small, and black is white.</p><p>If you've ever seen any of the NRA's <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/national-rifle-association-ad-call-to-violence-2017-6" target="_blank" rel="noopener">objectively terrifying commercials</a>, they'll try to show you that the world you see is a terrifying place. And in that world you, a good person, have the responsibility to arm yourself in the face of danger. That's how you can take control. They know who this works on. So do gun manufacturers.&#xa0;</p><p><span style="color: #000000;">"We experienced strong consumer demand for our firearm products following a new administration taking office in Washington, DC, in 2009,"&#xa0;</span><a href="http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1092796/000156459015005183/swhc-10k_20150430.htm">Smith &amp; Wesson's management</a><span style="color: #000000;">&#xa0;said in 2015. </span></p><p><span style="color: #000000;">Of course, 2009 was</span>&#xa0;when President Barack Obama took office, an event the NRA prepped for by telling its members that he presented a&#xa0;<a href="https://www.thenation.com/article/how-gun-industry-got-rich-stoking-fear-about-obama/"><span>"serious threat to Second Amendment liberties</span>."</a> The fact that Obama barely touched gun legislation did not stop guns from selling like hot cakes during his administration. All the NRA had to do was create an alternate reality in which he would regulate guns and, since it confirmed some people's fears, people were more than happy to live in it. <a href="http://fortune.com/2017/08/04/trump-gun-sales-obama/">Gun sales dropped after Trump took office.</a></p><p>As a politician, Trump has employed the same tactics.&#xa0;Before taking office he often spoke of our growing economy as if it were in the depths of economic depression. During his inauguration he waxed philosophical on "American carnage." He's played with conspiracy theories. What this does is confirm to his supporters that they are in fact aware of the world - that they get it, and everyone else is living a fallacy.</p><p>What Trump also offers in his narrative is control. Over at the&#xa0;<a href="https://www.irishtimes.com/opinion/david-mcwilliams-blue-collar-america-has-lost-control-1.3393812">Irish Times, David McWilliams</a>&#xa0;nailed how it keeps working-class Americans aligned with the lying billionaire philanderer who is using policy to enrich his own kind. It's because, McWilliams explained, "Make America Great Again" actually means Make Us Feel Powerful Again.&#xa0;</p><p>From McWilliams:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Someone once observed that Donald Trump is what poor people think rich people look like. It is a cruel but brilliant observation.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"It's also about control and giving orders. Political pollsters or political analysts don't seem to have twigged this essential human control trait.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"The working man doesn't despise the rich guy who has made it on his own. That guy has earned the right to give orders. He despises the hyper-educated professional who has made it because of conferred credentials. ...&#xa0;<span>What he despises most of all is that he has no real control, but they appear to have control without having risked anything."</span><span>&#xa0;</span></p><p>I should note here that I'm talking about Trump and the NRA together not only because their diehard followers often overlap, but also because the NRA thought they were a match. For years economists, political scientists and business school professors have been working under the assumption that humans are rational creatures who will always do what's in their best interest. This is nonsense that has trickled down into all kinds of policy and everyday thinking about behavior.<p>We are changing the way we think about this stuff, though. The economist who won the Nobel Prize in 2017, Ricard Thaler of the University of Chicago, did so by explaining a bunch of ways humans convince themselves to hurt themselves and how to work around that.&#xa0;</p><p>Accepting human irrationality goes a long way when it comes to understanding and changing our relationship with guns, but it won't go the whole way. To have real discussion about this, we have to bring people out of their alternate realities and back to the one we all really live in.</p><p>Over at&#xa0;<a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/notes/2018/02/show-us-the-carnage-and-other-changes-to-the-post-massacre-ritual/553607/">The Atlantic,</a>&#xa0;James Fallows argued that Americans have been too sheltered from the realities of gun violence. He says the media should show pictures of the aftermath of an attack, and force Americans to share in the horror that the victims of gun violence were forced to endure.&#xa0;</p><p>This idea isn't exactly new. Before the Civil War, abolitionists pushed pictures of beaten and whipped slaves into people's faces. They conducted mock slave auctions with young women who would've been sold off into prostitution. Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote "Uncle Tom's Cabin."</p><p>In the 1970s, the <a href="http://time.com/3739572/american-atrocity-remembering-my-lai/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Life Magazine photo-story</a> on the My Lai massacre made people question what they thought was the reality of our presence in Vietnam. This is how the minds of every day Americans changed - because what they thought was reality changed.</p><p>In some tiny measure, the fact that the survivors of the&#xa0;<span>Marjory Stoneman Douglas attack <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/parkland-florida-students-slam-trump-for-blaming-democrats-fbi-for-shooting-2018-2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">are speaking out against the NRA</a> is forcing us to share in their horror. Their willingness to bravely recount their experience is why this tragically desensitized nation seems to be feeling something this once. </span><span>These survivors are not allowing us to forget that the alternate reality some Americans are living in attacked them violently, and that it will kill again. </span></p><p><span>There are millions of Americans out there who will find this a difficult pill to swallow, because it invariably means their opposition to these survivors' goals makes them bad people. It attacks their need to be good by putting them on the side of killing innocent children. It's uncomfortable. It shatters the ghastly, but exhilarating fantasy they live in, where the world is a place they can understand and control with automatic weapons.</span></p><p><span>There is no question that we must break this delusion, we just have to be ready for it to be painful.
