</div><keyword id="1744133" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="John-Katzman">John Katzman</keyword>, educational entrepreneur and <a href="http://www.noodle.org/">Noodle Education</a> CEO, says being a leader at a startup infinitely surpasses being a leader at a large company.
<keyword id="1031162" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Noodle">Noodle</keyword> is an aggregator of <keyword id="6355445" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Education">education</keyword> information, featuring educational videos, search features, and student-to-school matching functions.
"I hated being a public company CEO," Katzman told Business Insider. "The thing about startups is you can make it, and if it’s wrong you can remake it, and you can build a team that you want to have, a product that you want to have. You’re utterly focused on your users or your customers and their needs, and trying to figure out how to meet those needs."
"Once you’re public, and as you grow, you’ve got an installed base, regulations, and transparency requirements that really, as CEO, make you spend more and more of your time facing investors and regulators, talking to accountants and anchors...It’s just that it’s not as much fun."
Even among his discontent, Katzman is no stranger to corporate life. After ending his 26-year career as the founder and CEO of The <keyword id="392701" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Princeton-Review">Princeton Review</keyword>, he began another education startup, 2U, in 2008. While he says that he stayed at Princeton Review for too long a time, he regrettably left 2U "too early."
"The question was, in a sense, at Princeton Review, how much value was I adding as a public company CEO. I was adding less than other people might’ve...I think you want to move on when you’ve given your best work and then feel that you’re not going to add as much value moving forward. I think I could have left a little earlier and done that."
Not only did Katzman learn a lot about timing, but also about maintaining the vision that entrepreneurs so often lose sight of once their venture takes off.
"I think a good entrepreneur has a very clear grasp of what the goal is, an unwavering sense of the goal, an utterly agile approach of getting there." 
His advice to the rising business mogul: don’t be wed to the path, find the path, while staying wed to the goal.
As for Noodle, Katzman doesn't think he's leaving anytime soon.
"I think I have plenty here to keep me fully engaged for quite some time. The notion of building the right team right now, getting great people, letting them do great work, and keeping a hand on the tiller, that's exciting."

</div><div class="image-container float_right" style="width:480px"><div class="image"><keyword id="1031162" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Noodle">Noodle</keyword> <keyword id="6355445" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Education">Education</keyword></div></div>The American <keyword id="6375224" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="higher-education">higher education</keyword> system is a dysfunctional money-sucking machine, according to John Katzman, <a href="noodle.org">Noodle Education</a> CEO. 
"If you look at the increase in tuition in higher ed in the last thirty years, it makes the housing bubble look like a pimple," Katzman said. "In a sense, [universities] are working to create the iron lung machine. They’re looking to build something that can’t possibly be the right answer. The right answer is that we have to dramatically lower tuition, while improving quality."
Katzman is best known as the founder of test prep and admissions consulting company The Princeton Review. He founded Noodles in 2011 with the aim of helping to navigate the complex web of educational resources.
"I’ve come to realize that as frustrating as it is for education providers, universities, schools, tutoring companies, fitness instructors, anybody to find students, it is equally frustrating for parents and kids to find the right education," Katzman said. "It just struck me that that was fixable."
Noodle offers a comprehensive gateway for educators and students, helping users find the right schools, tutors, and tutorials for them. For example, a prospective graduate student can look up different schools in their area or abroad based on price, field, and type of program. The goal of the Noodle search is to help students find the tools that are the right fit for them, instead of the tools that are the most well-known. A key to the business are the alliances that Katzman built nationally to pool resources into one, sleek portal.
Katzman argues that better information is the first step to reform.
"The technologists can’t figure out how to work with the educators," Katzman told us. "The educators can’t reach the right students and parents ... if you can clarify it, find a way for everybody to find everybody, you’re going to get better learning, better innovation, and you’re going to get lower costs."
Katzman expects that online education will be a big part of the solution.
"[In online classes] the professor's time is spent teaching a small number of students, and every moment you’re together is a dialogue," he said.

While <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2017/06/26/books/review/the-new-urban-crisis-richard-florida.html">a few large, coastal cities</a> have seen their populations grow, economies skyrocket, and major industries expand, other cities in the northeast and Midwest look increasingly like ghost towns. Go back more than a few decades and that divide wasn't nearly as stark. The US manufacturing industry was booming, and factory towns like Buffalo and Detroit were considered the economic heart of the nation. Today, these cities make up what's called the "Rust Belt" - a nod to the <a href="https://beltmag.com/why-rust-belt-matters/">decline of the steel industry</a> in the 1980s. Around 40 years later, <a href="https://www.citylab.com/equity/2019/04/economic-inequality-geographic-divide-map-census-income-data/586222/">the wealth gap</a> between these cities and coastal powerhouses <a href="https://www.axios.com/wealth-gap-richest-americans-roaring-twenties-938b8a27-bf7b-4392-b4ae-41b84bef2002.html">continues to widen</a>. Many Rust Belt cities are now littered with abandoned homes that local governments can't afford to tear down. A few of these governments have started selling empty properties for a single dollar, provided that the new owners are willing to fix them up. In just a short time, dollar home programs have begun to symbolize how far Rust Belt economies have fallen - but they might also be a ticket to a more prosperous future. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">John Greim/LightRocket/Getty ImagesRust Belt cities like Buffalo have struggled to revive their economies.</div></div></div>The programs seem to all follow a similar formula. In Buffalo, New York, the government-run <a href="https://www.buffalony.gov/306/Urban-Homestead-Program">Urban Homestead Program</a> sells abandoned properties for $1, plus closing costs. Homes that qualify for the program can't have an interested buyer or be of use to the public. To purchase a dollar home, buyers must agree to stay there for at least three years and fix any building code violations within 18 months.Buffalo's program began about four decades ago - around the time that the manufacturing industry collapsed - but <a href="https://www.wivb.com/news/local-news/buffalo-homesteaders-buy-house-for-1/1108617505">gained significant attention</a> around 2015. City officials have said that <a href="https://money.cnn.com/2015/03/03/real_estate/buffalo-1-homes/index.html">only a handful of prospective buyers</a> go through with a purchase each year. Many others are deterred by renovation costs, which are part of the deal in other cities as well. In Gary, Indiana, the government's dollar home program requires buyers to earn at least $35,250 annually and bring the home up to "habitable standards" within one year. At the end of five years, the city will cede full ownership of the property.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Gary Community DevelopmentA dollar home that was purchased in Gary, Indiana.</div></div></div>Though renovations are often expensive, they don't necessarily exceed the cost of purchasing a new home. In 2017, a housing coordinator for the city's Department of Community Development told The Times of Northwest Indiana that <a href="https://www.nwitimes.com/news/local/lake/gary-offers-homes-for-a-dollar-under-certain-conditions/article_5d3c3167-9501-5cd3-a6b8-89184f23fede.html">renovations could cost</a> about $20,000 to $30,000. The <a href="https://www.nwitimes.com/business/lake-newsletter/average-sales-price-of-northwest-indiana-home-has-risen-in/article_0b0a4a1d-7ad3-5365-a283-719a55aed4e9.html">average home price in Gary</a> hovers at around $46,000.Since 1960, more than half of Gary's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/gary-indiana-is-deteriorating-badly-2013-6">population has disappeared</a>, leaving about <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/15/us/a-chance-to-own-a-home-for-1-in-a-city-on-the-ropes.html">a third of its homes</a> unoccupied or abandoned. At the moment, its dollar homes program is limited to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dollar-homes-indiana-fixer-upper-2018-12#it-has-also-maintained-some-surprising-connections-to-hollywood-3">just a handful of properties</a>. The city's director of communications told Business Insider that the lottery is currently closed, and won't open again until the end of the year. In a larger city like St. Louis, prospective owners have <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/st-louis-cheap-dollar-homes-2019-3">a far wider selection</a> of dollar homes. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Google MapsAn abandoned home on Geraldine Ave. in St. Louis.</div></div></div>St. Louis' program, which launched earlier this year, includes more than 500 vacant single-family properties. To qualify for the program, homes must be less than 1,500 square feet and have sat in the city's inventory for more than five years. Like in Buffalo, buyers must commit to occupying the home for at least three years, which prevents people from flipping the properties right away. They're also expected to bring the exterior up to city code in 120 days and renovate the entire property in 18 months.All told, buyers are out about $400 before renovations have begun. In addition to a $25 application fee, buyers are asked to obtain a $250 insurance policy and pay for a "homeowners counseling class," which teaches them the logistics of owning a home. Nearly all of the properties in Gary, St. Louis, and Buffalo have incurred major damage, such as peeling walls, broken windows, caved-in roofs, and rusted appliances. Many will need to be gutted in order to become habitable. The success of these programs will likely depend on whether buyers see the homes as a worthwhile investment - or if the prospect of massive renovations and hidden costs proves too great a burden.
