The rover has logged just over 25 miles (40 km) on the surface of Mars to surpass the record set in 1973 by a Russian probe on the moon. <br /><br />

	Opportunity arrived on Mars in January 2004. The aging but intrepid rover was built to drive only about a single kilometre but has continued to operate far beyond its design capabilities.

	The robot rover, a six-wheeled vehicle about the size of a golf cart, found evidence that fresh water once pooled on the surface of Mars earlier this year.
<br /><br /> The rover, on Sunday, advanced another 157 feet (48 meters) as it continued along the rim of a Martian rater. According to NASA's <keyword id="324773" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Jet-Propulsion-Laboratory">Jet Propulsion Laboratory</keyword> near Pasadena, California, this puts Opportunity's total odometer at 25.01 miles (40.25 km). <br /><br /> The Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s (JPL) <keyword id="2448585" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="Mars-Exploration-Rover-Project-Manager">Mars Exploration Rover project manager</keyword> <keyword id="1292337" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="40" keywordseo="John-Callas">John Callas</keyword> said, "Opportunity has driven farther than any other wheeled vehicle on another world." 	The rover still has miles to go. As per scientists, the next plan is to direct Opportunity to a nearby Martian valley. This would extend its accumulated operating distance to 26.2 miles, the traditional length of a marathon.

"Good Night Oppy" is available for streaming November 23.</li><li>The film highlights how mission scientists created a wake-up playlist for the rover's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mars-dust-storm-pictures-opportunity-rover-2018-6">morning routine</a>.</li></ul><p>To bid farewell to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-mars-opportunity-rover-15th-birthday-photos-2018-7">NASA's plucky Opportunity rover</a> in 2018, mission staff at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory decided to play Billie Holiday's "I'll Be Seeing You."</p><p>A new documentary, "Good Night Oppy," available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video on November 23, tells the story of Opportunity — known affectionately as Oppy — which explored Mars for 15 years in search of signs of ancient water.</p><p>For more than a decade, engineers played a song for the rover each time it "woke up" and began its work analyzing rocks and soil on the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/chinas-mars-spacecraft-imaged-entire-red-planet-state-media-says-2022-6">red planet</a>.</p><p>"When I think of Opportunity, I will recall that place on Mars where our intrepid rover far exceeded everyone's expectations," John Callas, manager of the Mars Exploration Rover project at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said in a 2019 <a href="https://mars.nasa.gov/news/8413/nasas-opportunity-rover-mission-on-mars-comes-to-end/">press release</a> upon losing communication with the rover. "We knew it was going to be a good day," Matt Wallace, mission manager of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said at a <a href="https://mars.nasa.gov/mer/newsroom/pressreleases/20040131a.html">news briefing that day</a>. "The rover woke up fit and healthy to Bruce Springsteen's 'Born to Run,' and it turned out to be a good choice."</p><p>Opportunity set a number of interplanetary driving records. According to <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/nasas-record-setting-opportunity-rover-mission-on-mars-comes-to-end">NASA</a>, it set a one-day Mars driving record in 2005, when it traveled 721 feet. The robot could hibernate through dust storms, which sometimes last months.</p><p>Months later, mission engineers hoped Opportunity would reboot once the weather cleared, as it had in the past. This time, it remained silent.</p>

She's been living her life.</p><h5 style="text-align: center;">Story by Muna Mire<br />Photography by Lia Clay Miller</h5><p class="drop-cap">Ayesha Curry has finally found the key to a good night's sleep. </p><p>First, she plunges into a pool of icy water. Immediately after that, she hustles into a sauna, which is heated to triple digits. She'll go back and forth a few times, numbing her body and reawakening it in turn, until she can feel her nervous system winding down. "It's freaking cold," she says. "But it works." </p><p>Curry, 34, has her own private cold-plunge-and-sauna combo tucked away behind the Northern California home she shares with her husband and three children. The setup was part of a pandemic-era wellness tear Curry was on, determined to find a way to feel good — or at least better — during <a href="https://www.insider.com/people-share-what-theyve-learned-about-themselves-in-quarantine-2020-4">quarantine</a>. </p><p>The schvitz has done wonders: The extremes in temperature invigorate her in the mornings and ease her insomnia, which she's struggled with for much of her life, in the evenings. Saunas are, of course, very old wellness tech: They work by pushing your body to operate at maximum capacity in order to sustain homeostasis in a calibrated environment. Your heart gets a workout as a result. </p><p>Like her husband, the Golden State Warriors point guard <a href="https://www.insider.com/steph-curry-warriors-net-worth-money-wife-ayesha">Stephen Curry</a>, Ayesha Curry is no stranger to navigating extremes. She's used to pushing herself in a thousand different directions, each one demanding her full attention. Now, though, she's letting things level out, take their course, recenter, and recalibrate. "I feel like you see a lot less of me, and you hear a lot less of me, but it's because I'm actually living my life," she says. "And it feels really good." </p><p>These days she and Stephen recover from workouts together: cold plunge, sauna, red-light therapy. They've found a rhythm that works for them. </p><p class="drop-cap">In early May, Curry takes a red-eye overnight from San Francisco and comes straight to meet me in New York. She walks into the backstage room of the Brooklyn studio where we're shooting her editorial and immediately makes a beeline for the garment rack to peruse the designer offerings.</p><p>She fingers an eye-catching, daffodil-colored tulle dress before pantomiming a request for coffee and flopping down in an armchair opposite me. An espresso appears in front of her. When she finishes it, another takes its place as though conjured. </p><div type="image" title="Ayesha Curry" height="6633" width="4422" msid="100479637" hostid="261"></div><p>Curry is smaller in person than I anticipated. She wears an oversize, floor-length Charles Jeffrey Loverboy denim coat over a sweatsuit. I can tell the coat acts as a kind of stylish armor, the way a hoodie or massive sunglasses might. Curry takes a moment to get acclimated to the scene, poking at a gift basket on the table to forage for snacks. None pass muster. </p><p>Her team flits around us, prepping for the shoot and attending to various logistics. Ponytails swing back and forth like metronomes. The sweet, heavy smell of dozens of roses and calla lilies fills the studio as the set decorator prepares a tableau of artfully strewn stems. Florals for spring: groundbreaking.  </p><p>When we meet, the Warriors are fresh off of a loss; the Lakers had eked out a five-point victory the previous night. I start to ask Curry if losing bruises her husband's ego or affects the mood in the household. "It's a long series," she says before I can finish my sentence. Meaning one loss for Stephen and the Warriors means nothing in the grand scheme of the NBA playoffs.</p><p>Curry shakes her head as though warding something off. "The wins roll off his back, but the losses roll off, too. He never lingers too long in the stink of a loss," she says. "He kind of just keeps it moving." It's clear from her delivery that there's no room for debate: When it comes to her husband, she's a true believer. </p><p>It's also apparent that Curry understands reframing is a useful therapeutic tool in navigating the pressure cooker of athletic stardom. She's exploring these kinds of methods for herself, too. After the pandemic, her depression and social anxiety spiked. She's now seeing a therapist, which she tells me she was afraid to do for a long time. "I had some bad experiences, and they scared me away. But now I've found one that I love, and I actually look forward to it," she says.  </p><p>Curry credits therapy with helping her make much-needed changes in her life. One of these involved a pivot away from her role as a media personality. She's no longer interested in being the main character (or worse, a supporting character to her husband). Curry explains that being taken out of context for clicks is a painful lesson; she's had to learn to be guarded. </p><p>She had a particularly bad experience on "Red Table Talk" — the Facebook Live interview series helmed by Jada Pinkett Smith — in 2019. At the time the show was taped, Curry was newly postpartum, a nursing mother. On the program, she discussed sometimes feeling insecure in her marriage, sometimes wanting attention — real and vulnerable human emotions. But the show "was edited in a way that made me sound crazy," she says. "It's not what I said, and the context was weird. Yeah. I took that one personally."</p><p>"Media is a very ruthless space," says Curry's sister-in-law, Sydel Curry-Lee. "Celebrities are real people. All press is good press, but that's not true when it comes to our emotions and our mental health." In their family, "we're all about protecting our peace." </p><p>So Curry has taken a step away from the spotlight and toward charity work and entrepreneurship, entering the wellness and lifestyle space with her company, <a href="https://sweetjuly.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sweet July</a>. In a sense, as the wife of a very famous athlete and therefore the head of a very famous family, she's always been selling her lifestyle. But Sweet July has allowed Curry to leverage her fame to get the better end of that bargain. </p><p>Sweet July does many things: publishes a quarterly magazine; runs a production studio; puts out its own line of lifestyle products like candles, tableware, and jewelry; and maintains an Oakland storefront where all these things are on offer, plus items from small businesses around the Bay Area that Curry feels an affinity for. The company's publishing house is set to release its first book, the entrepreneur <a href="https://zandoprojects.com/imprints/sweet-july-books/">Fawn Weaver's "Love &amp; Whiskey,"</a> next year. "I feel like self and home are pretty all-encompassing," Curry says. She's right — she could technically sell anything. I joke that she could give Gwyneth Paltrow a run for her money. </p><p>Curry sees Sweet July as a sort of incubator for Black- and women-owned small businesses. She's tried to build a company with a soul. "It's cliché at this point, but representation does matter," she says. "If I have the opportunity to uplift another person's business that looks like me or comes from the same background as me, I'm all for it." </p><p>Sweet July's uptown Oakland <a href="https://sweetjuly.com/editorial/welcome-to-sweet-july/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">storefront</a>, which also houses a café, belongs to its own kind of community. The entrepreneur Sherri McMullen's shop, <a href="https://shopmcmullen.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">McMullen Boutique</a>, is just down the street. "It's really nice to have a neighbor," McMullen says. "We want to make sure we're all taken care of. It's great to get coffee from Sweet July or food from another Black-woman-owned business that's a block away." </p><div type="image" title="Ayesha Curry" height="2156" width="3234" msid="100480241" hostid="261"></div><p>She and Curry both focus on up-and-coming brands, and they often talk about makers they like or admire. Curry "has been so intentional and thoughtful about every part of her business," McMullen says, describing her focus and drive. "She's committed to making space for herself, and that's admirable for women and mothers." </p><p>Curry-Lee has also watched her sister-in-law's company grow. "At the end of the day, when you're in the position that Ayesha is in, people will always attribute your success to your husband. It's even harder to make a name for yourself," she says. "But really it's her determination, her creativity. She can be talking to someone and come up with a really creative idea that no one else has thought of. She has this mind that not a lot of people have." </p><p class="drop-cap">Ayesha Curry (née Alexander) was born in Markham, Ontario — about 20 miles north of Toronto — in March 1989. She's the middle child of five kids and was raised in a Christian household by immigrant parents: Her mother, Carol, is Chinese-Jamaican, and her father, John, is African-American and Polish. </p><p>When she was 14, her family relocated to North Carolina, where she attended high school and <a href="https://www.insider.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-currys-love-2019-7">met her future husband</a>. She and Stephen belonged to the same church and the same Wednesday-night youth group. The two reconnected and started dating in 2008. They've<a href="https://www.insider.com/steph-curry-marriage-wife-ayesha-2018-6"> been together for 15 years</a> which, from the outside, seems impossible. "We really feel like <a href="https://www.insider.com/celebrities-who-married-their-high-school-sweetheart-2018-4">we've grown together</a> and grown up together," she says. "He's truly my best friend." </p><p>Curry grew up in a musical household: Her father was the manager of the hip-hop duo Kris Kross, among others. Curry herself played the bass guitar and was high-school friends with the experimental musician Kelsey Lu. </p><p>Apart from school and church, Curry didn't do much of anything as a teenager: no sports, no extracurriculars. She describes herself as an obedient kid ("too good"), which meant she followed her parents' rules for what time and how often she had to be home. She had a few close friends, but not many, purely because she wasn't allowed to be in the spaces where adolescent friendships bloom. "If I couldn't ride the bus home, it wasn't happening," she says. </p><p>When Curry got older, her mother apologized. "She was like, 'I was scared. I thought something was going to happen to you,'" Curry says. By then, the pieces had started to click into place for Curry: Her mother was a first-generation immigrant who'd moved from Jamaica when she was a kid. She was doing her best to keep her five children safe and accounted for in a new place. "It took me a while to realize that some of her apprehensions were straight out of fear," she says. "Not out of not wanting me to do anything." </p><p>Curry spent the pandemic keeping her own children close. For them, time spent away from the public eye during the pandemic was a mixed blessing. When the world shut down, the Currys retreated into a private bubble. "We kind of had a revolving door all the time," Curry says of their life before March 2020. With the newfound privacy, the family was able to take time and space to "figure out what we want for our lives" and "how to better ourselves." </p><p>For their children — Riley, 10; Ryan, 7; and Canon, 4 — Curry says the uninterrupted time with both parents at home was a godsend. They flourished. "The girls are super artsy," Curry says. "Right now my 7-year-old, Ryan, she likes the ukulele." </p><p>The public may be most familiar with the eldest Curry child, Riley. As a young mother, Curry brought Riley with her on the road to Stephen's games. Riley's <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/stephen-curry-riley-curry-superstar-2016-5">impromptu antics</a> captured the camera's eye and the nation's heart. Curry regrets the overexposure.</p><p>"When the social media thing started, nobody knew what that was going to become," she says. "If we had known back in the day just how chaotic it would make life, I don't think we would've done it. But we were just genuinely living our lives back then. And we thought, 'This is our kid. We're bringing our kid along.'" Curry is wiser now and determined to give her kids a childhood — they are no longer in the public eye. </p><p>None of the children have social-media accounts or cellphones as a safeguard against what they might see about their famous parents online. Curry isn't naive; she knows that won't be the case forever. But for as much wisdom as Curry has gained in her years as a mother, certain things remain out of her control. "I'm trying to be as normal as possible, but every day we wake up and there's a new school shooting, a new attack," she says. "Every time I pull up to their school for drop-off, I'm looking at the entrance, I'm looking at the exit, I'm looking around." </p><div type="image" title="Ayesha Curry" height="4975" width="3317" msid="100479758" hostid="261"></div>The recent rash of school shootings — Pittsburgh, Michigan State, Nashville — has her on edge. But trying to shield her kids from the media means she won't be able to reach them should the unthinkable happen. So she's found a middle ground. "I think we've settled on doing an Apple watch," she says. "'Cause apparently with the Apple watch, you can still make calls."<p>Like any parent, Curry is trying to give her kids what she didn't have growing up — freedom and independence — while still safeguarding them. The other day, one of her daughters came home with a field-trip permission slip. It "feels so empowering to let her go and experience something," Curry says. She checked the "yes" box. </p><p>She and Stephen talk about it often: how to walk the line with their own family. "Where's the middle ground, where we're strict, but we're also allowing our kids to experience life?" she says. "We're trying to figure out what that balance is. Just kind of learn as you go, right?" </p><p>The difference is that with Curry, the world is watching as she learns. But she's getting used to ignoring the onlookers. "The people in my life know who I am and my values and what I believe in," she says, "and I think that's all that matters." </p><p>When she isn't using her sauna, Curry says her favorite way to unwind is to load her paddleboard into the back of her black pickup truck and drive to the edge of the Pacific. She paddles out as far as she can until she reaches a calm spot in the water. This triggered it to go to sleep and conserve battery power, which the rover needs to run heaters that protect its circuits from blistering Martian cold.</p><p>"A lack of sunlight caused solar-powered Opportunity to go into hibernation," Andrew Good, a representative for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, wrote in <a href="https://www.uahirise.org/ESP_056955_1775" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a press release</a>.</p><p>But Opportunity hasn't woken up and phoned home since it went to sleep on June 10, leaving mission controllers to wonder if it ever will.</p><h2>What a new satellite image of Opportunity shows</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Opportunity was descending into a location called Perseverance Valley when the storm hit.</p><p>With dust levels plummeting in the past couple of weeks, NASA was able to clearly photograph the location on September 20 using its Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.</p><p>That <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?feature=7245" target="_blank" rel="noopener">satellite image</a>, shown above, was taken by an instrument called HiRISE. In the picture, there is an unmistakable though almost indiscernible ruddy bright spot on the slopes of a hill: the Opportunity rover.</p><p>A before-and-after image created by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory at Caltech more clearly shows where the rover stopped, but also how the environment has changed as a result of the storm.</p><p>"A key unknown is how much dust has fallen on the solar arrays," Good said. "The HiRISE image shows some reddening of the surrounding area, suggesting dust fallout, but it is not possible to determine how much dust is on the arrays themselves."</p><p><span style="color: #222222;">The image comparison contains some good news, though: There does not appear to be an "optically thick layer of dust" that has coated this spot, Good writes. This may mean there's enough sunlight reaching Opportunity's solar panels to slowly charge its batteries.</span></p><p>However, no one can be sure how much dust is coating Opportunity's solar panels, or when a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/martian-dust-devils-keep-landing-on-curiosity-2012-11">dust devil</a> (a common weather phenomenon on Mars) might blow over the robot and sweep them off.</p><h2>What Opportunity's possible final resting place looks like</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>NASA's overhead images of Opportunity are revealing, but it's difficult to get a sense of what the location actually looks like.</p><p>Bu <a href="https://twitter.com/_TheSeaning/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Seán Doran</a>, a graphic artist who lives in the UK, has made a hobby of taking NASA's satellite imagery, maps, and other data and rendering them into realistic, from-the-surface views of spacecraft on Mars. (Doran is also known for his visualizations <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC28l88GMXXqZYfY0Ru9h50w" target="_blank" rel="noopener">of Earth</a> using satellite data and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jupiter-pictures-nasa-juno-spacecraft-2018-4">Jupiter</a> using <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jupiter-nasa-juno-mission-new-scientific-discoveries-2018-9">Juno spacecraft</a> data.)</p><p>Just a few days after Opportunity went to sleep, Doran modeled Perseverance Valley and the robot to show its exact location on Mars. The illustration above, which Doran <a href="https://twitter.com/_TheSeaning/status/1044760866015649792" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tweeted on Wednesday</a>, renders the scene in color and 3D using HiRISE images and elevation data.</p><p>Doran also created black-and-white views of Opportunity, one of which is shown below. It provides a look at Opportunity over the ridge of the valley (shown as a small white shape at center).</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>The artistic depictions give a sense of scale and desolation relative to Opportunity, and also a glimpse at where the rover may rest forever.</p><p>In mid-September, as the dust storm thinned and sunlight returned to battery-charging strength, NASA began a 45-day countdown to recover Opportunity.</p><p>"If we do not hear back after 45 days, the team will be forced to conclude that the sun-blocking dust and the Martian cold have conspired to cause some type of fault from which the rover will more than likely not recover," John Callas, the rover's project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said in a <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?feature=7227" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press release on August 30</a>.</p><p>The deadline falls at the end of October and, if not met, would mark the end of an "active" campaign to listen for and try to contact Opportunity on a daily basis. But Callas noted the agency will still try "several months" of "passive listening" to see if the robot somehow wakes up after the deadline.</p><p>Still, the rover is more than 15 years past its warranty, and the dust storm led to one of the longest periods a solar-powered robot has ever hibernated on Mars. This could easily create a situation where some of the robot's battery or other systems suffered damage due to Martian cold and low power levels.</p><p>"Even if engineers hear back from Opportunity, there's a real possibility the rover won't be the same," NASA said in <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?feature=7215" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a press release</a> in August. Combined with the previous loss of its identical-twin Spirit rover, this signals the operational finale of the Mars Exploration Rovers program - the longest-running Mars mission in history.</p><p>Opportunity and Spirit landed on Mars in January 2004. Each robot was designed to last about 90 days on the Martian surface, but Spirit survived for more than six years and Opportunity for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-mars-opportunity-rover-15th-birthday-photos-2018-7">nearly 15 years</a>. The latter rolled about a marathon's worth of miles across the red planet's surface.</p><p>Opportunity was last heard from in June, when regional dust storms began to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/mars-curiosity-rover-selfie-dust-storm-2018-6">tear across Mars</a>.</p><p>"This is the worst storm Opportunity has ever seen, and we're doing what we can, crossing our fingers, and hoping for the best," Steve Squyres, a planetary scientist at Cornell University and leader of the rover mission, <a href="https://www.planetary.org/explore/space-topics/space-missions/mer-updates/2018/06-mer-update-opportunity-dust-storm-sleep.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> the Planetary Society at the time.</p><p>Though Opportunity had weathered other Martian dust storms before, this particular tempest - which NASA called "one of the most intense" ever seen - blocked a record amount sunlight to the planet's surface for an extended stretch of time.</p><p>It appears this was too much for the aging rover, which relies on solar energy to keep its electronics healthy.</p><h2>What killed Opportunity?</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/spaceimages/details.php?id=PIA22521">NASA/JPL-Caltech/TAMU</a></span></p><p class="caption">Simulated images show what NASA's Opportunity rover saw as a global dust storm on Mars blotted out the sun in June 2018.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>The dust storm on Mars began to clear in late August.</p><p>With sunlight intensity growing, mission managers said at the time that Opportunity's solar panels should (in theory) begin gathering enough sunlight to recharge the rover's batteries. This prompted the team to begin attempts to contact the robot.</p><p>"If we do not hear back after 45 days, the team will be forced to conclude that the sun-blocking dust and the Martian cold have conspired to cause some type of fault from which the rover will more than likely not recover," John Callas, the rover's project manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said <a href="https://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?feature=7227" target="_blank" rel="noopener">on August 30</a>.</p><p>That deadline passed in October, marking the end of an "active" campaign to contact Opportunity.</p><p>But the space agency did not immediately give up. This probably impaired the rover's ability to store and use electrical energy.</p><p>Cold is a major threat on Mars, since temperatures can drop to -100 degrees Fahrenheit near the equator in the winter. Such cold can shrink bits of metal in electronic circuits and snap them.</p><p>While little buttons of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-nuclear-battery-plutonium-238-production-shortage-2017-8">nuclear material</a> called <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nuclear-powered-spacecraft-nasa-history-2017-3">plutonium-238</a> help keep Opportunity's circuitry warm, they are well-decayed and not as hot as they used to be - and unable to protect the rover's systems on their own.</p><p><em><strong>Read more</strong>: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nasa-plutonium-fuel-automation-oak-ridge-energy-department-2019-1">NASA's deep-space nuclear-power crisis may soon end, thanks to a clever new robot in Tennessee</a></em></p><p>Opportunity's batteries were also very old, and the longer such batteries remain uncharged, the more electrical storage capacity they lose. This can lead to a sudden dip in voltage called a "brown out," which puts the robot into an unrecoverable state.</p><p>Spirit - Opportunity's sister rover - is presumed to have suffered the same fate in 2010. Engineers tried for more than a year to contact Spirit, but the rover never responded. NASA gave up trying to recontact the rover in May 2011 (during winter on Mars).</p><p>NASA is hosting a <a href="https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/nasa-to-share-results-of-effort-to-recover-mars-opportunity-rover" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press conference</a> at 2 p.m. EST on Wednesday to provide an update on Opportunity's status. NASA's longest-running Mars mission is over with the presumed death of its Opportunity rover

But 10 years later, NASA's Opportunity rover is still in good health and continues to send back data from Mars.</span></p>
<p>The prolonged health of the rover "was not in anyone's wildest dreams," John L. Callas, a project manager for the Mars Exploration Rover mission, <a href="http://www.space.com/24400-opportunity-on-mars-stories-from-rover-control-video.html?cmpid=514648" target="_blank">wrote in an editorial for Space.com</a>.</p>
<p>Opportunity launched on July 7, 2003. The golf-cart-sized robot landed on Mars on Jan. 24, 2004, Pacific Time.</p>
<p>Its identical twin, Spirit, touched down on the other side of Red Planet a couple of weeks earlier, but stopped talking to Earth in 2010, around six years into its mission.</p>
<p>So why has the Opportunity rover been able to outlast its designed lifetime by thousands of days? On its website, <a href="http://mars.nasa.gov/mer10/?ss=direct" target="_blank">NASA attributes </a>the robot's staying power to "a combination of sturdy construction, creative solutions for operating the rovers and even a little luck!"</p>
<p><span>"It's a well-made American vehicle," Ray Arvidson, the rover's lead investigator was <a href="http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/01/23/nasa_celebrates_opportunitys_first_decade_on_mars_with_a_selfie/" target="_blank">quoted by The Register </a>as saying. "These are excellent machines, they are well designed, they're well built, they're fantastic and that's why they're still working."</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Mars is no vacation spot. The ground is covered with sharp rocks and steep hills, </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/martian-dust-devils-keep-landing-on-curiosity-2012-11" target="_blank">dirt</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/martian-dust-devils-keep-landing-on-curiosity-2012-11" target="_blank">tornadoes</a><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> whirl around the surface, and the planet goes through wild temperature swings - from 80 degrees in the Martian summer to as low as -199 degrees in the winter.</span></p>

<p>Heaters in the body of the unit help batteries and other temperature-sensitive equipment to continue operating in the bitter-cold.</p>
<p>In addition, <a href="http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/01/23/nasa_celebrates_opportunitys_first_decade_on_mars_with_a_selfie/" target="_blank">scientists originally thought</a> that all of the Martian dust blowing around would coat the robot's solar panels, rendering them unusable within a few months. Instead, strong winds have helped to keep the panels relatively clean.</p>
<p>Callas agrees that rover's success is due to both human ingenuity and factors that are beyond our own comprehension:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>We can assert that unexpected wind gusts blew the dust off the solar arrays to maintain rover power. We can claim that operational skill permitted the rovers to survive the cold, dark Martian winters. We can pride ourselves that we built exquisite roving machines. </span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>All of these are true. But does that really explain this unimagined longevity and the tremendous scientific success? Whatever the explanation, this is a grand accomplishment.</span></p>
<p>The prime mission of both rovers was to search for geological clues about environmental conditions on early Mars - like evidence of water - and to determine whether those conditions would have been suitable for life. By looking for rocks and soil types that typically form in water, both rovers confirmed that streams, lakes, or rivers once flowed on Mars.</p>

While she's still running, the rover is starting to feel the effects of old age - two of the robot's 10 instruments have stopped working and its robotic arm has become "arthritic," Callas wrote.</span></p>
<p>Opportunity is currently stationed at the edge of an exposed outcrop on the rim of Endeavor Crater, where satellite observations suggest that small amounts of clay minerals might be present.</p>
<p>The aging rover is also continuing to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mystery-mars-rock-appears-near-opportunity-rover-2014-1" target="_blank">investigate a mysterious jelly-doughnut-shaped</a> rock that appeared in pictures of the same patch of ground taken 13 days apart. Scientists think the rock was probably flicked into its new position by one of the rover's wheels as the machine was turning around. The rock, <span>which has a white rim and center that is deep red,</span> unlike anything scientists have seen before on Mars.</p>

It Wasn't Supposed To Last This Long...

It was the one that pummeled the crew with 105 mph winds, struck Matt Damon's character with a rogue piece of shrapnel, and swept him off into the distance.</p><p>It turns out that in real life, the dangers of Martian dust storms would be muted somewhat by the planet's thin atmosphere. Still, although a real Martian dust storm probably wouldn't send people or equipment flying, it would obscure the planet in a dusty haze. And this would block solar energy, bug out electronics, and possibly cause health issues among explorers.</p><p>This could be an issue for people like Elon Musk, who wants to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/elon-musk-mars-speech-transcript-2016-9">colonize the planet</a> in the near future to save humanity once Earth is no longer habitable.</p><p>Luckily, a team of scientists may be getting better at predicting Martian global dust storms. Sometimes, these local storms grow or coalesce to become regional storms. And sometimes, on rare occasions, these regional tempests blanket the planet in a haze of dust that can make it pretty hard to see. On even rarer occasions, these regional gusts grow into global storms that affect the entire planet, enveloping it in a cloud of dust.</p><p>These storms are known to affect the performance of rovers trucking through the Martian terrain, cutting them off from solar power. </p><p>"The global dust storm in 2007 was the first major threat to the rovers since landing," said <span>NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory's</span> John Callas, project manager for Spirit and Opportunity, in <a href="http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/news/news.php?release=2016-256">a press release</a>. "For many days during the worst of the storm, the rovers were completely on their own."</p><p>According to NASA, we've only observed nine of these global storms since 1924, but scientists expect there have been a handful more that escaped detection.</p><h2><strong>It's dust storm season</strong></h2><p>Predicting when one of these global tempests will strike has challenged scientists for decades. But in 2015, <span>James Shirley, a planetary scientist at JPL,</span> published a <a href="http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0019103514005132">paper in the journal Icarus</a> which pointed out a possible pattern influenced by the planet's orbital motion.</p><p>"Global dust storms tend to occur when the momentum is increasing during the first part of the dust storm season," the press release states. "None of the global dust storms in the historic record occurred in years when the momentum was decreasing during the first part of the dust storm season."</p><p>Right now, Mars is in the midst of a dust storm season, and its current conditions resemble those of past global storms. Netflix is currently producing a "Full House" spinoff titled "Fuller House." It centers on D.J. Tanner (Cameron) who finds herself widowed with two young boys and a third child on the way. Kennedy's death, this commentary was excerpted from "<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Shooting-Kennedy-JFK-Culture-Images/dp/0520229851">Shooting Kennedy: JFK And The Culture Of Images</a>" by art historian<a href="http://users.wfu.edu/lubindm/"> David M. Lubin of Wake Forest University</a>:</em></p>
<p>STATE FUNERALS HAVE LONG BEEN USED as an occasion for rousing the sentiment of the people. The measured dirges and muffled drums, the rhythmic clip-clop of the horses, the flag-draped coffin, the solemn march of foreign dignitaries and heads of state, the grieving crowds have all been part of the spectacle of patriotic grandeur by which monarchs and national heroes have been laid to rest.</p>
<p>The lying-in-state of Kennedy's body in the Rotunda of the Capitol was modeled on that of Lincoln in 1865. The catafalque that had borne the Great Emancipator's coffin was brought out of storage and used again. No one was allowed to miss the historical significance of this restaging, which accorded to <keyword id="75066" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="JFK">JFK</keyword> in death a Lincolnesque moral stature in relation to African American advancement that he had not attained during his lifetime. So many ordinary citizens came to pay their respects that the Rotunda was held open all night long. More than a quarter of a million mourners, eight abreast filed past between 1:30 Sunday afternoon and 8:00 the next morning. </p>
<p>Although the officials in charge followed the rule book for military and state funerals to the letter, Mrs. Kennedy added a number of personal touches and orchestrated the event. When she insisted on walking behind the caisson to the funeral mass rather than ride "in a fat black Cadillac," researchers were dispatched to the Library of Congress, where they were relieved to find in the volumes of yellowed newsprint verification that a precedent existed in the funeral procession of Presidents Washington, Lincoln, and Grant.</p>
<p>A more recent touch was the riderless horse carrying a pair of boots reversed in the stirrups. That funeral motif supposedly dates back to the time of Genghis Khan as a way to commemorate a leader lost in battle. It had been used for an American presidential funeral only once, eighteen years earlier, at the wartime death of Roosevelt. A gelding that ironically bore the name Black Jack - the nickname for Jackie's father - was led behind the flag-draped bier of the other Jack, her husband. As historian William Manchester describes it, "His streaming flanks were unnatural, alarming. His steel hooves clattered in jarring tattoo, an unnerving contrast to the crack cadence in front; his eyes rolled whitely. He was nearly impossible to control." The horse brought a note of barely tamed urgency to the proceedings, but he did not upstage the first lady. The funeral, attended by delegates from eighty-two countries (including eight heads of state and ten prime ministers) and watched live by hundreds of millions of people across the globe (it was broadcast even on Soviet state television), was Jackie's show from first to last.</p>
<p>No actress ever trod a greater stage before a larger audience, yet for this performance she was her own wardrobe mistress, her own makeup assistant, and even the music director, asking that the plangent sounds of the Black Watch bagpipers and the poignant navy hymn "Eternal Father, Strong to Save," both favorites of her late husband, be added to the program. Her ultimate touch was the idea of the eternal flame, which she lit at his grave.</p>

<p>PERHAPS THE MOST ENDURING IMAGE from the funeral, if not from the entire assassination weekend, was one that Jackie played a major role in creating. It was John John's salute at the bottom of the cathedral steps. He was saluting the flag-draped coffin as it was affixed to the caisson, the same caisson that had borne Lincoln and Franklin Roosevelt. He was saluting his father and, in the sense explored above, the nation's father. He was saluting the commander in chief. Film footage of the moment reveals an important detail that the still photographs do not. Immediately before John John saluted, Jackie leaned down and whispered to him, instructing him to make his move.</p>

<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">The December 3, 1963, issue of <em>Look</em> that was on the stands that day with its featured photo essay, "The President and His Son," shows that already back in October John John had been learning how to salute. In the <em>Look</em> photo, he mistakenly uses his left hand instead of his right, and the salute isn't crisp and smart, but the rudiments of his polished salute on the cathedral steps are clearly in the making.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">A salute is a bodily gesture, a precise movement of the arm and hand meant to confer honor. It belongs to the category of what linguistic philosophers call "performative utterances." Such an utterance, for example, "I declare you husband and wife" or "I give you my word," accomplishes the act it describes. To say "I give you my word" not only tells what you are doing but actually does it; the description and the action are inseparable; the dancer cannot be distinguished from the dance, the saluter from the salute. John John's salute is a performative utterance - it says, in effect, I give you my respect, and in so doing, it does just that. It might also be regarded as a piece of performance art, though belonging more to the mother who prompted it than to the son through whom, we might say, it was performed.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">John John looks so heartbreakingly vulnerable in his double-breasted coat and short pants, with his white ankle socks and his wobbly knees and his left hand at his side, fingers pointed inward, like that of his Uncle Bobby, who stands above and behind him in striped trousers and morning coat. If nothing else, the picture reminds us how fragile children are, how breakable.</span></p>

<p><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">WHEN THE PRESIDENT'S WIFE and family gathered around his gravesite at Arlington, a dull roar rose in the east and fifty military jets streamed through the sky in a farewell salute. This too was an act of honor and respect, and a symbol of closure and grace. Yet perhaps, in retrospect, it didn't bode well. </span><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">On the front page of the November 25, 1963, afternoon edition of the </span><em style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Sacramento Bee</em><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> are three headlines. The first and largest reads, "KENNEDY IS LAID TO REST: Joins Other Heroic Dead in Arlington." The second, smaller but in bold print, says "Oswald Is Slain in Burst of Revenge." The third and smallest headline announces, "Johnson Renews Pledge of US Viet Nam Victory." Centered amid the three narratives of heroic death, mad vengeance, and pledged military victory is a photograph of the beautiful veiled widow and her two handsome brothers-in-law, Robert and Edward, walking in measured cadence behind the caisson bearing the coffin of the dead warrior-prince.</span></p>
<p>What might we conclude, then, about the great piece of theater directed, stage-managed, and performed by Jacqueline Kennedy in late November 1963? Did it liberate Americans from a national trauma by making the nation better, teaching its citizens the value of inner nobility and self-sacrifice? Or did the funeral ultimately give rise to a more sustained trauma in which, in the crucible of the Vietnam War, the nation all but cracked, with loyalists to the state, inspired by patriotic idealism, in constant clash with antiwar protestors, whom they accused of rank selfishness but who themselves laid claim to a higher patriotism that cherished peaceful republicanism over war-making imperialism? To put this but another way, was the Kennedy funeral a moment of peace and healing and moral inspiration, or was it simply neoclassical theater on a giant scale, a spectacle that mesmerized the public and diverted its attention from the war on which it was already embarked? Was the funeral in essence a grand opera finale, with Jackie giving a performance that even Maria Callas couldn't rival?</p>
<p><em style="line-height: 1.5em;">Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori</em><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">, wrote the Latin poet Horace. It is a sweet and seemly thing to die for one's country. In a very real sense, that was the underlying message of the Kennedy funeral, a message many of the nation's sons (and daughters too) came bitterly to reject, especially when they took it also to mean that it is a sweet and seemly thing to kill for one's country. In that context Mitford's phrase "the American way of death" took on an ironic new meaning, referring less to how Americans died than to how they dealt death to others, with their technologically sophisticated planes, artillery, and napalm.</span></p>

But in the national schism that lay ahead, what counted as courage to one American signified cowardice to another, and love of country expressed itself in radically different forms, from excessive zeal to abject shame. If the nation mourned as one during the funeral of the president, it would mourn as many in the years to come.</p>
