An investigation is underway and an autopsy is set for Monday to determine the cause of death, according to police and local news reports. Boeing faces new whistleblower complaint as former engineer says faulty 787 Dreamliner systems could leave passengers without oxygen in emergencies

"Some of them are in their cells and some of them are out in the common area, but whatever it is that they're doing, they stop and they sing," Cynthia Hughes told Insider. Hughes' nephew is one of roughly 40 Capitol riot defendants held without bail in connection with the January 6 attack on the Capitol. Hughes requested that Insider not name her nephew.That group is being housed in a separate section of the sprawling Central Detention Facility in southeast Washington, DC, located just a few miles away from the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/january-6-oral-history-capitol-attack-insurrection-timeline-investigation-2021-10">building they were accused of storming</a>.To most people, that section is called the Correctional Treatment Facility. But to many of the defendants, their supporters, and even some <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/marjorie-taylor-greene-visited-jan-6-rioters-jailed-patriot-wing-2021-11">Republican lawmakers</a>, it's the "Patriot Wing."It houses the defendants facing the most serious accusations in relation to the insurrection.Some of the residents, including <a href="https://www.insider.com/proud-boys-leader-called-jail-inhumane-asked-for-early-release-2021-11">Enrique Tarrio</a>, are tied to organized extremist groups like the <a href="https://www.insider.com/far-right-extremist-groups-focus-fbi-investigates-capitol-siege-2021-1">Proud Boys and Three Percenters</a>.Many are accused of assaulting police officers or carrying weapons on Capitol grounds. Its residents have included Jacob Chansley, the "QAnon Shaman" who was <a href="https://www.insider.com/qanon-shaman-jacob-chansley-sentenced-capitol-riot-2021-11">sentenced to 41 months in prison</a> this week; Kyle Fitzsimons, who was photographed wearing butcher's workwear at the Capitol; and <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nazi-who-once-grew-a-hitler-mustache-was-capitol-rioter-investigators-2021-3">Timothy Hale-Cusanelli</a>, a US Army reservist who prosecutors said sported a Hitler mustache to work.As the defendants await their trials together, they appear to have formed a tight-knit group, creating nightly rituals and organizing group activities.Insider reviewed multiple legal filings and spoke to sources familiar with the jail conditions for this story. The Washington, DC, Department of Corrections did not respond to Insider's multiple requests for comment.<div type="image" title="Thomas Sibick Patriot Wing" height="900" width="1200" msid="87800881" hostid="261"></div><h2>An homage to the 'Hanoi Hilton'</h2>In an October 26 court hearing, the attorney Stephen Brennwald recounted the moment he heard the defendants sing their nightly rendition of the national anthem while on the phone with his client, Thomas Sibick. (Sibick is charged with several counts, including robbery and assaulting a police officer, per court documents seen by Insider.)"I heard them myself," Brennwald said, <a href="https://lawandcrime.com/u-s-capitol-siege/jan-6-rioter-accused-of-attacking-officer-michael-fanone-can-go-home-but-cant-watch-political-talk-shows-judge/">Law &amp; Crime reported</a>. "It was literally this herd mentality. They're literally singing, most of them off-key, literally singing the song, almost cult-like. It was pretty scary actually."But Hughes, who said she speaks to her nephew daily, said the singing is "what gets them through."Greg Hunter, an attorney for two other defendants at the jail — Jeff McKellop and Kyle Fitzsimons — told Insider the singing was an homage to the "Hanoi Hilton" prison in North Vietnam, which held American prisoners of war during the Vietnam War.The late Sen. John McCain, who was held there, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxH1GnQPEqE">recalled in 2013</a> a cellmate standing up to the Vietnamese guards by singing "The Star-Spangled banner": "To witness him sing the national anthem in response to having a rifle pointed at his face — well, that was something to behold."For many of the Capitol riot defendants — described by <a href="https://www.vice.com/en/article/g5gkkb/how-the-gop-is-turning-capitol-rioters-into-political-prisoners">some GOP politicians as "political prisoners"</a> — singing the national anthem is a similar act of defiance, Hunter said.<div type="image" title="Washington DC's Central Detention Facility." height="2740" width="3654" msid="87800882" hostid="261"></div>The group had also formed a close bond, Hughes said: "They're very solid in there. They're very united. They have a prayer group. They have a Bible study group."She also said many detainees still "feel very strongly about the election" and continue to support former President Donald Trump, though they are "frustrated" he hasn't sufficiently backed them in return.The defendants are each assigned a one-man cell, but they get to mingle in communal areas, Hughes said. To stay occupied, they also organize events, most recently arranging a Halloween DIY craft contest, she said.They even have their own newsletter, Richard Barnett, who left the jail in April, <a href="https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/man-who-propped-feet-up-in-pelosis-office-complains-of-treatment-in-dc-jail/2748401/">told News4 Washington</a>. "We would all contribute to it and pass it cell to cell," he said.<h2>Patriot support groups and fan mail</h2>The defendants are being propped up by a sprawling public support network who send donations, greeting cards, and gifts on a weekly basis, Hughes said.A loyal fan base is also congregating on several Telegram channels seen by Insider. The supporters on one channel called the <a href="https://patriotmailproject.com/">Patriot Mail Project</a> share recordings of daily prayers for the defendants.According to the channel, one of the defendants, Kyle Fitzsimons, thanked the group for their gifts, saying: "I have been receiving mail from the patriot mail project. It is nice to hear from strangers." Earlier this month they also got a visit from GOP Rep. Thirty-three of the candidates are running as Republicans while two are independents and one is still deciding whether to run as a Republican or an independent, the investigation found. "This is not a conspiracy, this is reality," she insisted. "I do believe that there's human trafficking going on right now. I do believe that Hollywood has participated in some of this with pedophilia on and it's something obviously we can't ignore," he said.Navarro, who has gone viral multiple times on Twitter for his far-right and <a href="https://twitter.com/realomarnavarro/status/1399204839247147017?lang=en">homophobic views</a>, has previously pushed the debunked Pizzagate theory. He told Insider: "I feel like there are certain things going on. There's something shady in that pizza shop."The Californian also defended using the popular QAnon slogan WWG1WGA ("Where we go one, we go all") in a tweet posted on October 3, 2020, saying he ended up deleting it because he didn't want Twitter to ban him."I always have to worry about my free speech and what I say on Twitter," he said.The fear of being removed from social media platforms is not holding back QAnon fan Jo Rae Perkins, who is running for the Senate in Oregon, where she unsuccessfully ran in 2020.Perkins, who discovered QAnon messaging boards in 2017 and describes them as a "source of information." She has also <a href="https://www.mediamatters.org/media/3845201">posted</a> a video of herself taking a "digital soldier oath" in front of a WWG1WGA sticker, <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2020/08/22/politics/jo-rae-perkins-qanon-oregon-senate-race/index.html">CNN reported.</a>In a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/JoRaePerkins/videos/10212656828176113/">video interview with Right Wing Watch</a> last year, Perkins compared the "Q" posts to secret codes used during World War II and said believing in Q is like believing in Jesus Christ, <a href="https://www.vice.com/en/article/3aqkjv/qanon-already-has-19-followers-running-for-congress">VICE reported</a>. <h2>The camouflage candidates</h2>Around eight candidates have consistently and blatantly pushed elements of the QAnon conspiracy theory in the past but have, in some way, tried to distance themselves from it. These include <a href="https://twitter.com/BarnettforAZ/status/1294797667910918144">Josh Barnett</a>, <a href="https://www.thedailybeast.com/last-ditch-plot-to-sabotage-bidens-presidential-election-goes-full-qanon">Bobby Piton</a>, <a href="https://twitter.com/Johnheretohelp/status/1380577727292575744">Jon McGreevey</a>, and <a href="https://eu.northjersey.com/story/news/politics/elections/2020/10/15/bill-pascrell-and-billy-prempeh-vying-control-njs-9th-district/3655043001/">Billy Prempeh</a>.Most famously, firebrand Rep. <keyword id="9740457" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="marjorie-taylor-greene">Marjorie Taylor Greene</keyword>, the freshman Congressperson who <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/marjorie-taylor-greene-wins-house-gop-runoff-georgia/story?id=72316326">received the support of Former President Donald Trump</a> after her primary runoff victory in Georgia's 14th Congressional District, is one of these candidates.In the past, Greene has proliferated bizarre fantasies that are on-brand with the QAnon conspiracy theory.She has <a href="https://www.mediamatters.org/facebook/marjorie-taylor-greene-endorsed-deranged-conspiracy-theory-about-democrats-and-satanic">accused Hillary Clinton of sexually assaulting a child before slicing off her face and wearing it as a mask.</a> She once suggested that the late Supreme Court Justice <a href="https://www.mediamatters.org/supreme-court/marjorie-taylor-greene-2019-suggested-ruth-bader-ginsburg-was-replaced-body-double">Ruth Bader Ginsburg had been replaced by a body </a>double years ago, and has said that <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/brucelee/2021/01/30/did-rep-marjorie-taylor-greene-blame-a-space-laser-for-wildfires-heres-the-response/?sh=65910c3ce44a">California wildfires might have been started by space lasers</a>.<div type="image" title="marjorie taylor greene" height="2682" width="3576" msid="83892631" hostid="261"></div>Greene pushed these ideas so fervently that she became a "correspondent" for a conspiracy news website between 2017 and 2018, <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/tech/tech-news/georgia-congressional-candidate-s-writings-highlight-qanon-support-n1236724">NBC News</a> reported. In <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20180419234735/http://americantruthseekers.com/qanon-what-is-the-storm-and-is-there-about-to-be-an-awakening/">one of her posts</a> for the now-defunct "American Truth Seekers" website, the controversial lawmaker called Q a "patriot."She also told her social media followers that Q "is worth listening to" in a now-deleted video from 2017.But while Greene once proudly broadcast some of QAnon's wildest ideas, she has since tried to publicly distance herself from the conspiracy theory.In August 2020, Greene said that QAnon no longer represented her current position. "No, I don't [consider myself a QAnon candidate]. I think that's been the media's characterization of me," she told <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/marjorie-greene-georgia-gop-says-shes-not-a-qanon-candidate">Fox News</a>.But that didn't stop Twitter from<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/marjorie-taylor-greene-suspended-from-twitter-for-12-hours-2021-1"> temporarily locking her account in January 2021</a> when it culled QAnon accounts after the deadly Capitol riot.Rep. <keyword id="10543170" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="lauren-boebert">Lauren Boebert</keyword>, a contemporary of Greene and a rising star in the GOP, has also tried to walk back her support of the conspiracy theory she had formerly championed.Known to some as the "<a href="https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-election-2020/qanon-lauren-boebert-nancy-pelosi-capitol-riot-b1785663.html">QAnon Congresswoman,"</a> Boebert has said that she is <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2020/jul/01/who-is-lauren-boebert-republican-primary-qanon-trump">"very familiar" with QAnon</a> and has praised the conspiracy theory. "Everything that I've heard of Q, I hope that this is real because it only means that America is getting stronger and better, and people are returning to conservative values," she said during <a href="https://www.npr.org/2020/07/01/885991730/gop-candidates-open-to-qanon-conspiracy-theory-advance-in-congressional-races">an appearance on QAnon web show SteelTruth</a> in May 2020.But after winning the Republican nomination for Colorado's 3rd District, she told <a href="https://kdvr.com/news/politics/colorado-primary-winner-lauren-boebert-meets-president-trump-distances-herself-from-qanon/">Fox 31 News</a> that she's "not a follower." She did not, however, disavow a central tenet of the QAnon ideology - that the "deep state" is actively working against Trump. "I believe there are people working in the administration that at least appear to be actively undermining President Trump," she said in 2020.<div type="image" title="AP lauren boebert" height="2670" width="3560" msid="83892632" hostid="261"></div>Publicly disavowing QAnon whilst continuing to advocate for some of the conspiracy theory's nonsensical beliefs is an oft-used "camouflage" tactic by the far-right, Media Matters president Angela Carusone told Insider.Some candidates might be doing so to appear more palatable to a wider audience and to avoid "political blowback" while maintaining their base of QAnon donors, he said."When candidates walk back their QAnon commitment, I think you have to view that with real skepticism," Carusone advised. "They do things in a careful and concerted way."<h2>QAnon is a political tool to raise money and attract voters</h2>While some candidates publicly disavow QAnon in a bid to appeal to a more mainstream audience, others subtly signal their support for it as a means to bring conspiracy theorists into the fold, to donate and vote for them."Many don't even mention Q directly," Jack Bratich, an associate professor of journalism and media studies at Rutgers University, told Insider. "It's become a kind of background story for adherents, who can signal to each other that they are part of this shadowy movement."Insider identified around a dozen candidates who have expressed their support for QAnon in less than explicit ways, via retweets, subtle nods to slogans, and the use of specific hashtags. These include Steve Von Loor, Tricia Flanagan, Sam Peters, and Anthony Sabatini.<div type="image" title="qanon sign dc" height="1000" width="1333" msid="83892633" hostid="261"></div>Several candidates included the hashtag #WWG1WGA in their tweets. Sam Peters used the <a href="https://twitter.com/SamPetersNevada/status/1290044418636935169">#QArmy hashtag</a> in August 2020."I'm certain that there are some of these individuals that don't actually care or believe in it, but they see it as an opportunity," Carusone said."I think there are some candidates who are certainly just being political," Carusone went on. "They're crassly seeing a potential political donor base or power base."<h2>QAnon is 'on the rise' in congressional <keyword id="6358883" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="politics">politics</keyword></h2>It's clear that the influence of QAnon in congressional politics is "on the rise," Carusone said. "And they're aggressively moving to take over parts of the Republican party, local committees, school boards, local races too."Bratich said it shows how deeply QAnon has "settled" into the Republican party. "As a movement, it has expanded to try and take over the party," he said. "It's not central to the GOP but it's no longer a marginal component either."QAnon is now a major force in American politics, Carusone agreed. But there is one candidate who he's spoken of with unexpected sympathy: Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont. In a refrain of one of the themes of his 2016 campaign, Trump is claiming that the Democratic party establishment is conspiring to halt Sanders' candidacy, with the impeachment trial part of the plot. "They are rigging the election again against Bernie Sanders, just like last time, only even more obviously," the president tweeted on January 17. "They are bringing him out of so important Iowa in order that, as a Senator, he sit through the Impeachment Hoax Trial," wrote the president, referring to Sanders' obligation as a senator to take time out from the campaign to attend the impeachment trial being held in Washington DC. Of course many of the Trump campaign's messages are negative - focusing on Sander's support for sweeping government welfare and spending programs that have long been considered too radical for mainstream Democrats to campaign on. But underlying both types of message there's a strategy at play, sources close to the Trump campaign <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2020/01/28/trump-aides-torn-bernie-sanders-2020-108226">told Politico.</a>By talking about Sanders, whether sympathetically or negatively, Trump is aiming to boost his profile and his chances of being chosen as the Democratic presidential candidate.According to the report, the president is confident that after setting up Sanders he could knock him down, attacking the left-winger as a radical socialist opposed to American values. The report echoes one in the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/14/us/politics/trump-sanders-bloomberg-2020.html">New York Times from earlier in January,</a> which also claimed that the president is so confident of his chances against Sanders that he is seeking seeking to boost his candidacy. Hello. So below are my messy thoughts about my new special "Louis CK live at the Comedy Store" available here <a href="https://louisck.net/purchase/live-at-the-comedy-store" target="_blank">https://louisck.net/purchase/live-at-the-comedy-store</a> for 5 dollars, all over the world... So this is my sixth hour-long standup special. The truth is, I really love making these. I skipped doing one last year and I missed it. This one is different from the recent others. For one thing, it was shot in a nightclub instead of a theater. I love doing the theater shows. When I was a kid, my favorite thing in the world was Richard Pryor's concert films. The idea of being a comedian and doing a "concert" was a real goal for me. Performing in a theater expands your material and opens you up as a performer. The pressure of playing to thousands of people, I found, always makes you better. And every concert hall I've played has made me feel like I'm getting a whiff of that city or town's history. The whole thing can be very exhilarating. But Nightclubs, comedy clubs, is where comedy is born and where comedy, standup comedy, truly lives. Going back to Abraham Lincoln, who was probably America's first comedian, Americans have enjoyed gathering at night in small packed (and once smokey) rooms, drinking themselves a bit numb and listening to each other say wicked, crazy, silly, wrongful, delightful, upside-down, careless, offensive, disgusting, whimsical things. Sometimes in long-winded, red faced hyperbole, sometimes in carefully crafted circular, intentionally false and misleading argument. Sometimes in well-chiseled perfectly timed trickery of verbiage. Pun-poetry. One line, one off, half thoughts. Half truths. Non-truths. Broad and hilariously wrongful generalizations, exaggerated prejudices and criticism of nothing and everything while a couple over here shares a pitcher of sangria, this table of guys order round after round of beers. These women over here are having vodka and cranberry. This guy drinks club soda and sits alone. He actually came for the comedy. It's a club. It's a bar. It's late at night. No one here is being responsible. These are the things we do when we are DONE working and being citizens. We go to a comedy club and pay a bit of money to laugh harder than we ever do anywhere else. That is the standup comedy that I've been doing for almost thirty years. I have been working theater (and now arena) stages for the last nine of those thirty years but the amount of hours I've spent on a club stage outnumber the theater stage hours by more than I can figure. I've been on comedy club stages probably more than I've stood on any other kind of spot in my entire life. I started in the Boston comedy scene, on ground that had been laid by great comedians like Steve Sweeney, Steven Wright, Barry Crimmins, Ron Lynch, Kevin Meany, Don Gavin, back in 1985 when I was 18 years old. I skipped college (still regret it), worked shitty jobs (will never regret that) and spent every single night at any comedy club in Boston I could finagle my way into. I would watch every single comedian and I would BEG to get on stage. In 1989 I moved to New York. I discovered a bursting comedy club scene, where you could literally do 8 shows on a saturday night. (I remember Ray Romano held the record at 9 shows). It was a glorious time for standup comedy clubs. Great comics everywhere. Colin Quinn. Mike Sweeney. Joy Behar. John Stewart. Charlie Barnett. Ray Romano. Dave Chapelle. Chris Rock. Brett Butler. Brian Regan. All working out every night in clubs all over the city. There was the Improv on 44th street. On 1st Avenue, Catch a Rising Star and around the corner on 2nd ave, the Comic Strip (still there). Carolines was on the Seaport then. And in the Village we had the Comedy Cellar (still there), the Boston Comedy Club and the Village Gate. I spent my early twenties bouncing from one stage to the other, from 8pm till about 4am, when Dave Attell, Kevin Brennan, Nick DiPaolo and I would head to a diner and eat breakfast. The money was terrible. About ten dollars per show on the weeknights, fifty a show on the weekends. So every other week you had to leave town and work in another city. You'd go live in Atlanta, Columbus, Phoenix, Tampa, for a week. Most clubs would put you up in a condo behind the club and you'd work the whole week. Tuesday thru Sunday, two shows Friday, three shows Saturday. You could make about 700 a week as an opening act. A good headliner might make 2500 or 3,000 but that was rare. I worked in comedy clubs all over the country and I think I actually remember every single club. My favorite clubs were the smelly little beer soaked places with dim lighting and low ceilings. Go Bananas in Cincinnati. The Brokerage in Long Island (still there) Penguins in Cedar Rapids. The Comedy Underground in Seattle. Then there were chain comedy clubs that were always too antiseptic and suburban. Some of them were literally inside of a mall next to a sunglass hut. The Improvs, the Funny Bones. There were some comedy clubs around the country that were legendary. That lasted out the death of comedy in the 90s. The independent and truly great rooms where you can still smell the cigarette smoke exhaled by Bill Hicks. The Acme in Minneapolis. The Punchline in Atlanta. The Punchline (not related) in San Francisco. Cobbs in San Fran. The Laff Stop in Houston. Zanies in Chicago. Charlie Goodnights in Raleigh. The Comedy Works in Denver. These were the Meccas. When you could get a week at Acme, you know you could continue having the will to do this shit for another few months. A week at the Punchline in San Fran could get you through the next week at Harvey's in Portland. There were club owners that were part of Comedy History. Who knew how to shape comedy. Mark Babbit, Lewis Lee, Manny Dworman, Lucien Hold, Silver Friedman, Bud Friedman, Ron Osborne, others. I spent all of my mid to late 20s and thirties working out in places like these. Later when I moved to Los Angeles, I discovered a scene out there that was creative and fun and also steeped in show business history. You could see Norm Macdonald. Charles Fleicher. Robert Schimmel. In LA they have coffee houses and very cool rooms like Largo, where you can bring your notebook on stage and try just about anything. People like Andy Kindler, Kathy Griffin, Patton Oswalt, Blaine Capatch, Craig Anton, Laura Kightlinger did outrageous stuff in those rooms. I would sometimes go on stage at places like Mbar or Largo and come out with twenty minutes of new material, cheered on by the young, open and adaptive crowds of the "alternative" scene. But I never believed those jokes until I took them to the Improv, where the more average and basic character of the audience would cut the new material down to about three jokes. And then there was the Comedy Store. I would take the last three remaining jokes to the store on Sunset. Maybe ONE of those would get a chuckle. And that joke, I knew, was the true treasure of the night. I have always found the Comedy Store to be the most intimidating club of my life. It is what I thought comedy clubs to be when I listened to Lenny Bruce records as a kid. The black vinyl couches and chairs, the red formica stage. Andrew Dice Clay on stage playing to fifteen people in open defiance of their hatred and funny as hell. The Comedy Store is really show biz. As in Milton Berle with his bow tie undone around his neck show business. Mop your brow and say "tough crowd" show business. A guy being beaten up in the parking lot show business. The Comedy Store is where Pryor cut his teeth. Letterman fought to get spots there. George Carlin. Eddie Murphy. Marc Maron told me stories about living in the apartment behind the Store and how Sam Kinison pissed on his bed one night. This is the Comedy Store. The wonderful dark side of comedy. The Comedy Store is the only club in the country that NEVER passed me when I auditioned. I auditioned at many clubs where I didn't pass but I always went back and finally did pass. The Comedy Store NEVER passed me. I just wasn't right for them. I didn't start working there until I became well known enough to circumvent the audition process. Until I became one of those guys who can just walk into a nightclub and go on stage. So why did I shoot my new special in this place? I don't know. Maybe because, after thirty years of doing comedy, the most exciting feeling for me is going on stage, not entirely sure it's going to go well. To this day, when I work at the Store, I feel there's a one in three chance I might bomb. Like bomb hard. To a guy my age who has been doing it this long, that is exciting. So over the last tour I did this year, I started doing shows at the Comedy Store "Main room" to feel it out. The staff of the club is excellent and they really know how to run a traditional room. I loved working with them. Pauly Shore and his family were very gracious when we approached them about shooting my special there. I really feel truly privileged to have shot this special on that stage. Okay I didn't mean to write such a long thing about comedy clubs. The point is I prepared the material for this special on club stages. I went to the Cellar here in New York, and their new club, The Village Underground, about ten times a week with the occasional trip uptown to Gotham Comedy Club and "The Stand" on third avenue. I went out to LA to put that spin on it, working Largo, the Improv and finally the Comedy Store, hammering this stuff together in front of late night comedy club audiences. So it only seemed right to shoot it that way. That's all. I hope you enjoy the special. Please see the movie "Boyhood". It's a great piece of filmmaking and even literature. I guess I didn't have to cancel the show at MSG tonight. I don't blame the mayor. That storm was a monster. We got lucky. When you consider the action taken by the government of entire north east, they got it right. To expect accuracy from each individual mayor is just too much. For us in New York and us in my house and us at MSG it was overblown. But if you expand that "us" to everyone in the path is the storm, they were spot on. My family in Boston is part of us for me. So that's how I look at it.
