But, on this <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/deals/best-presidents-day-sales-2024">Presidents Day</a>, Biden may have a reason to show Lincoln some gratitude.Indeed, Lincoln, the country's 16th commander in chief, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/most-controversial-presidential-pardons-commutations-in-us-history-2023-4">pardoned </a>Biden's great-great-grandfather, US Army employee Moses J. Robinette, after he was caught up in an altercation on a Union Army base in 1864, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/history/2024/02/19/abraham-lincoln-joe-biden-pardon-presidents-day/">according to a Washington Post report</a>. Robinette was sentenced to two years hard labor in a Florida military prison for his role in the fight with a colleague, the Post reported, citing a transcript of Robinette's military trial — until Lincoln stepped in and set him free.Robinette was serving as a civilian veterinary surgeon in the Army of the Potomac during the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/new-us-civil-war-wont-look-like-last-one-historians-2022-8">Civil War</a> when, on the evening of March 21, 1864, he got into a verbal altercation with another civilian employee, John J. Alexander. The shouting match turned physical, and eventually, Robinette injured Alexander with his pocketknife, according to the Post.The camp's watchmen arrested Robinette. He was charged with intoxication, causing a "dangerous quarrel," disturbing military discipline and order, and — as a result of the knife wounds — making an "attempt to kill." A military court convicted Robinette of all charges except the "attempt to kill" charge and sentenced him to the two-year prison sentence in Florida as punishment.Three Army officers petitioned Lincoln to overturn Robinette's conviction. After a senator from the recently formed state of West Virginia took up the case, Lincoln pardoned Biden's ancestor on September 1, 1864. The War Department issued Special Order No. 296, and Robinette was released, returning to his family's farm in Maryland.<h2>Newly discovered docs</h2>The Post's account of these events is based on a 22-page transcript unearthed by David Gerleman, a history instructor at George Mason University in Virginia, who discovered the document at the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/national-archives-tells-former-presidents-vps-search-for-classified-documents-2023-1">National Archives</a> in Washington, DC. The surprise pardon by Lincoln represented a reversal of Robinette's fortunes up until that point after he'd endured a pretty dismal time during the war. In 1861, when the war kicked off, Robinette operated a hotel in Grafton, Virginia. The area, now in West Virginia, was full of Union supporters and became a key early battleground of the war. Union soldiers destroyed Robinette's hotel, and his wife Jane died early in the war. The Post said Robinette fled with his children to other relatives in Allegany County, Maryland.By 1863, he was hired to help care for the ammunition pack horses and mules of the Army of the Potomac's reserve artillery. That assignment led Robinette to his scuffle with Alexander, who was serving as a brigade wagon master in the Army's winter camp on the bank of Virginia's Rappahannock River.Alexander is said to have confronted Robinette after overhearing Robinette badmouthing him to a female cook. The argument devolved into a physical fight, according to the transcript. First, both participants brandished their fists. Then, Robinette took out his pocket knife.Afterward, Robinette claimed he was only acting in self-defense and "had no malice towards Mr. Alexander before or since." In a letter the three Army officers sent encouraging Lincoln to overturn Robinette's conviction, they claimed he was merely "defending himself" against an adversary far larger and stronger than he was.Ultimately, Robinette waited three months between being charged and convicted. He went on to spend one month in the military prison at Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas, near Key West, Florida, before Lincoln pardoned him.Now, Robinette's direct descendant is sitting in Lincoln's old seat.

Colonization would ultimately be voluntary for those who resettled, but it was strongly encouraged by Lincoln, Kock, and other supporters. Plans for the first government-run colonization were set in motion.<h2>Black and white abolitionists opposed colonization</h2>Lincoln's proposals for colonization faced major opposition from Black and white abolitionist groups."Shame upon the guilty wretches that dare propose, and all that countenance such a proposition," Frederick Douglass <a href="https://diplomacy.state.gov/u-s-diplomacy-stories/the-diplomatic-career-of-frederick-douglass/">wrote</a> in his newspaper "The North Star" in 1849. An investigation into Kock in early January suggested he'd used deceptive business practices in prior ventures. The US Commissioner in Haiti also told the Lincoln administration that Kock was an unpopular figure in Port-au-Prince, and that he hadn't heard of any progress in constructing the settlement.Lincoln formally rescinded Kock's contract on April 16, 1863, but it was too late.Two days earlier on April 14, more than 450 Black settlers boarded a ship to Île à Vache, excited to leave former Confederate territory for what they had been told would be a better life.But disaster struck swiftly: A bout of smallpox killed at least 25 settlers at sea. When they arrived on the island, they found no reasonable shelter and had to construct crude huts. Kock, who became the overseer of the island, instituted a strict "no work, no rations" policy that echoed the antebellum era. "Aircraft carriers support and operate aircraft that engage in attacks on airborne, afloat and ashore targets that threaten free use of the sea and engage in sustained power projection operations in support of U.S. and coalition forces."That's long been the case, and there have been plenty of recent examples of the US challenging its rivals and adversaries around the world and messaging with its carriers.In early January 2021, for instance, the US Navy nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz was returning home from a lengthy 10-month deployment when the Pentagon abruptly ordered the ship to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/pentagon-changes-aircraft-carriers-orders-issues-warning-to-iran-2021-1">"remain on station"</a> in the Middle East in response to "recent threats issued by Iranian leaders against [then] President Trump and other US government officials."The original plan to send the Nimitz home was intended to de-escalate tensions with Iran, but its re-deployment was clearly intended to remind Iran of US naval might. In February 2021, the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group and the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/us-navy-two-carrier-strike-groups-south-china-sea-2021-2">conducted dual carrier operations</a> in the South China Sea, the latest in a series of US naval movements in the area and Taiwan Strait at that time that sent a message to China.And back in April 2019, the US Navy deployed two carrier strike groups — the Nimitz-class aircraft carriers USS Abraham Lincoln and USS John C. Stennis, as well as their combined forces of more than 130 aircraft, 10 ships, and 9,000 sailors and Marines — to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/2-us-aircraft-carriers-in-the-mediterranean-send-russia-a-message-2019-4">send an unmistakable message to Russia</a>, which had been expanding its presence in the Mediterranean since 2015, when Russian military forces joined with Damascus in Syria.These are just a few of a number of such examples. Carrier USS Gerald R. Ford has been operating in the Mediterranean Sea since June as part of a continuous tasking of Navy carriers to the region since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. It is the third, after USS George H.W. Bush and USS Harry S. Ford moving toward Israel, the US is sending its most capable, if still green, aircraft carrier into the area, but it could still face challenges in dangerous waters, especially given the capabilities of some of the regions more hostile actors, such as Hezbollah and its anti-ship missiles.The unexpected conflict playing out between Israel and Hamas is only expected to get worse and could expand as other actors make threats and Israel looks to retaliate and turn up the pressure on entire Gaza Strip, home to roughly 2 million people, with a possible heavy and devastating ground assault. 'You're all f---ed up': Trump exploded after his officials warned against using military troops to end George Floyd protests, book says

"Our sense from speaking with investors is that a CEO with a strong history of successful business development would be particularly well received," Abrahams wrote in a note Tuesday. A spokeswoman for Gilead said there's no update on the search<h2>Here are the likely candidates:</h2><ul><li>Jennifer Teubert, Johnson &amp; Johnson's executive vice president and worldwide chairman for pharmaceuticals. Teubert has experience in HIV, infections diseases, cancer, and immunology - all areas of focus for Gilead. </li><li>Pascal Soriot, CEO of AstraZeneca. <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/astra-zeneca-mulls-over-choice-of-successor-to-pascal-soriot-55k5bw56c">The Sunday Times reported in November</a> that the pharma giant has begun succession planning for Soriot.</li><li>Emma Walmsley, CEO of GlaxoSmithKline. Walmsley has only been in the role for a little over a year, but Abrahams notes that she, GSK Pharmaceuticals President Luke Miels, or chief strategy officer David Redfern would make good replacements as Gilead CEO because of their experience in HIV. </li><li>Daniel O'Day, CEO of Roche Pharmaceuticals. At the<a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-roche-acquired-foundation-medicine-and-flatiron-health-2018-7"> helm of Roche</a>, O'Day has been involved in deals like the $1.9 billion acquisition of Flatiron Health and the $2.4 billion bid for Foundation Medicine. </li><li>Ian Smith, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Vertex Pharmaceuticals. Smith's been at Vertex since 2001. </li><li>Paul Clancy, chief financial officer of Alexion Pharmaceuticals. Clancy stepped into the role in July 2017 after serving as Biogen's CFO for a decade. </li><li>Gilead could also turn to executives with scientific background like Hal Barron, who joined GSK in 2017 as chief scientific officer, long-time Regeneron CSO <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-regenerons-still-in-the-competitive-checkpoint-inhibitor-space-2018-2">George Yancopoulos,</a> or Lawrence Blatt, who was formerly the global head of infectious disease and vaccines at J&amp;J. </li></ul>Gilead could also count on some former executives to step back into the CEO role. <ul><li>Bob Hugin, former Celgene CEO. Hugin <a href="https://www.statnews.com/2018/11/07/hugin-loses-reelection-bid/">recently lost a bid for US senator.</a></li><li>Jeremy Levin, CEO of Ovid Therapeutics. Levin had a short stint as CEO of Teva Pharmaceuticals between 2012 and 2013. </li><li>David Hung, former CEO of Medivation. Hung left the company after <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/axovant-ceo-david-hung-formerly-at-medivation-on-building-companies-2017-9">Pfizer acquired the cancer drugmaker for $14 billion</a> acquisition. Hung served as CEO of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/david-hung-resigns-as-axovant-ceo-2018-2">biotech Axovant for 10 months </a>before stepping down in February. </li><li>Chris Viehbacher, former CEO of Sanofi. Viehbacher currently serves as a managing partner at <a href="https://www.gurnetpointcapital.com/about">Gurnet Point Capital</a>, a venture fund based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. </li></ul>Gilead could also choose to promote internally. Active managers have become 'the periphery' as passive funds have been overtaking active funds. The most likely way that active managers can reverse their "dire future" would be to "dodge the puncture of a market bubble," writes John Rekenthaler.
For active managers to benefit during a market bubble, it must occur within a market segment. "While a market crash is required to pop the bubble and release active managers' period of outperformance, a crash alone is not a sufficient condition." In 2008, active management's fortunes were "damaged rather than improved" by the plunge. 
"The other requirement, of course, is that active funds have a dramatic underweighting in that segment. It does no good if they own the bubble." And the problem with that, is "today's stock fund managers are not positioned much differently from the overall marketplace," according to Rekenthaler. "If a market crash drags down passive funds, active funds surely will not be far behind." 
 "There is, however, a possibility for bond-fund managers. In aggregate, taxable-bond managers hold much fewer Treasuries and government-agency bonds than does the Barclays U.S. Aggregate Bond Index, the most common benchmark used for taxable-bond funds," he writes. "…If interest rates were to rise dramatically, thereby decimating Treasuries, active taxable-bond managers might regain the initiative. "

A Merrill Lynch team with $800 million in assets under management (AUM) is joining HighTower Partnership. The newly recruited team will "represent the firm's fourth office in Florida," Andrew Welsch at Financial Planning reports.
Three of the advisors - Pamela Lynn Abraham, Jack Thomas, and Trevos Swartz - join the firm as partners, and will have an equity stake in their new employer. An additional advisor, Mathew Verrengia, senior registered associate Benita Alstatt, an client services associate Tiffany Likness also made the move. Abraham had been at Merrill Lynch her entire 33-year career - making this her first ever switch.

Jim Meehan managing partner at 1847Financial partially credits a threefold increase in production from 2011 to 2013, to the almost 40 millennial financial advisors he hired. He states that the hire was merely "smart business" because millennials bring "energy and enthusiasm to the business".
Additionally firms that don't hire millennials are not investing in the future. "Many advisors don't have a succession plan," he told Veronica Dagher at the WSJ. "What do they think is going to happen to all of their clients and their business?" He's even started an intern program with the hopes of "hiring some of those interns when they graduate".
However, the downside of millennial hires is that sometimes older clients don't take them seriously. To combat this problem and to help the millennials gain credibility, Meehan puts them on teams with more seasoned advisors.

Net profit margins have gone from 4.6% in March 2009 to 9.8% at the end of Q1 2014. "The problem is that, historically, margins like these have marked a peak rather than a normal level of profitability," writes James T. Tierney, Jr., at AllianceBernstein. "And the factors that have driven margin expansion to date are unlikely to persist."
Labor efficiencies, lower depreciation and amortization, and reduced interest expense, all factors that have driven margin expansion won't last long.
He says that, firstly, "the labor market is tighter, which could introduce higher wage inflation. While technology will always be a persistent pressure on labor, with employee share of revenue at very low levels, it may be much harder for companies to tighten wage costs further." Secondly, amortization and depreciation have declined for two reasons: companies are now more conservative about allocating capital; and "certain accounting rules have changed." Thirdly, "companies can't really rely on improvements to financing to help boost margins." 
"Investors should recalibrate their expectations to the new profitability reality. It's clearly going to be much harder to rely on margin expansion to deliver double-digit earnings growth in the quarters ahead, so revenue growth will be much more important to earnings growth. In this environment, the best defense to slowing margin gains is to identify companies that can beat expectations by delivering secular revenue growth."

ETFs have been some of the most important investment innovations of the past 25 years. But the "dark side of innovation is proliferation", according to Vanguard CEO Bill McNabb. "We now see some ETF providers thinly slicing market and country exposures. Others are basing products on back-tested data, bringing the market to only those that 'promise to outperform' broad markets."
Additionally, Vanguard has doubts over whether this "would ultimately benefit investors." Another problem with ETFs is the "issue of capacity constraints with traditional active mutual funds", according to McNabb. He writes: "when an Vanguard active fund reaches a certain asset level or is attracting too much 'hot money', we close the fund to new investors." But doing that with active ETFs is difficult.
"Our research shows that after these ETFs are launched, most actually underperform the market.1 It's hard to have the discipline to use ETFs for broad asset allocation and not get caught up in the product fads of the day. But it's the right thing for investors," according to McNabb.
