<p>But merely growing traffic is a limiting way to think of the effect mobile can have on your business, Joff Redfern, LinkedIn's mobile product chief, and Deep Nishar, the professional network's top product executive, said in an on-stage interview at Business Insider's Ignition Mobile conference Thursday.</p>
<p>Because LinkedIn's mobile usage was relatively small in 2011, when Redfern joined, there was low risk in trying radical new designs, he told interviewer Nicholas Carlson.</p>
<p>"Mobile gives you a chance to reinvent yourself," said Redfern. "Deep [Nishar] said this was an opportunity to reimagine what LinkedIn could be."</p>
<p>LinkedIn's mobile apps then informed the design of its desktop website, which in turn inspired new versions of its mobile apps. This back-and-forth between mobile and desktop culminated in a <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/linkedin-new-profile-page-2012-10">sweeping redesign of the site last year</a>.</p>

"When they choose <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/okta-access-gateway-hybrid-cloud-2019-4">Okta</a>, what's unique about it, if you're currently an <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-tech-companies-like-atlassian-microsoft-do-developer-interviews-2019-5">Atlassian</a> customer and you don't have an identify product, we're going to give you <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/okta-azuqua-automation-earnings-2019-3">Okta</a> for free, forever."</p><p>For <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/fastest-growing-work-apps-okta-2019-2">Okta</a>, COO and co-founder Frederic Kerrest says, it's an opportunity to gain new customers from Atlassian's wide reach. Right now, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/okta-shellye-archambeau-metricstream-board-2018-12">Okta</a> has over 7,000 customers, while <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/why-google-square-atlassian-using-kotlin-programming-language-2019-4">Atlassian</a> has 138,000 customers. While Okta's identity management product will be free for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/atlassian-earnings-stock-drop-but-wall-street-no-fear-about-future-2019-4">Atlassian</a> customers, if they want more advanced security products or use Okta with other applications, then they can purchase them.</p><p>"It's an opportunity for us to expand our partnership with Atlassian and find net new opportunities ourselves," Kerrest told Business Insider. "That's an opportunity for us to have it flip from a free customer to a paying customer."</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/atlassian-earnings-q3-2019">Atlassian</a> originally launched with software that runs on-premises, but now most of its customers are moving to the cloud - now, more than 90% of Atlassian's new customers choose a cloud product. And in September, Atlassian <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/atlassian-cloud-jira-confluence-access-updates-2019-9">announced new updates</a> and packaging plans for its cloud products.</p><p><strong><em>Read more: </em></strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/atlassian-cloud-jira-confluence-access-updates-2019-9"><em>$32 billion Atlassian just made sweeping updates to its cloud products, as it changes with the times: 'We strongly believe cloud is our future'</em></a></p><p>As its cloud products became more popular, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/atlassian-hires-first-vice-president-of-product-to-lead-jira-bitbucket-2019-3">Atlassian</a> customers started asking for this feature to use with those products, Redfern says. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/atlassian-president-on-why-acquiring-agilecraft-166-million-2019-3">Atlassian</a> decided it could either build its own identity and access management, or it could partner with another company. </p><p>Redfern says many of Atlassian's customers were already using identity management providers, but Okta was one of the most popular ones, so <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/atlassian-bitbucket-pipes-ci-cd-gitlab-github-2019-2">Atlassian</a> reached out.</p><p>"We've made that drop dead simple with this relationship with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/okta-earnings-microsoft-2018-12">Okta</a>," Redfern said. Okta and Atlassian are teaming up so that Atlassian's cloud customers can sign on with Okta 'for free, forever'

<p>Joff Redfern, VP of Mobile at LinkedIn, told Business Insider that when he joined five years ago, that number hovered around only 50 million members.</p>
<p>Not only is most of LinkedIn's userbase from abroad (India, Brazil, Great Britain, and Canada are all top contributors, and the company is starting to focus on growth in China), but nearly half of its traffic now comes from mobile. Redfern said that it was only about 8% three years ago, and he expects that LinkedIn will hit its "mobile moment" - when more than half of its traffic comes from mobile - later this year.</p>
<p>That shift aligns with LinkedIn's aggressive multi-app strategy. The company currently has five apps: Its flagship app for phone and iPad, Contacts, Pulse, Recruiter Mobile, and the recently released SlideShare app. </p>
<p>Overall, this mobile shift is a good sign for LinkedIn. Traditionally, the company has had to work to transform its image from a site that you only use every few years while actively job hunting, to a more dynamic social network that you should be interacting with and updating all the time. By making several different apps with different functions and clear daily uses, the company is increasing members' usage of the network.</p>
<p>On that note, however, that the company is still only revealing its total members, not its monthly active users, which is standard for other social networks. (For example, Instagram announced it had reached 200 million monthly active users several weeks ago.) "Monthly active users" is the metric that describes the  number of people who use an app at least once a month. Total members only describes the number of people who have ever signed up for a service. LinkedIn's MAUs are likely to be much lower.</p>

LinkedIn Hits 300 Million Members And Is Getting Even More Aggressive About Mobile

<p>In that role, he's been responsible for overseeing the development of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/linkedin-app-tips-tricks-2014-3" target="_blank">LinkedIn's many apps</a> and growing the social network's mobile visits to nearly 45% of its total traffic. </p>
<p>Naturally, he's a LinkedIn whiz, and <a href="http://blog.linkedin.com/2014/06/12/inside-story-joff-redfern-mobile/" target="_blank">in a recent interview</a> he shared his favorite tip for members.</p>
<p>"If you don't follow any <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/today/influencers?trk=li_corpblog_joffredfern_insidestory" target="_blank">LinkedIn Influencers</a>, you should," he writes. "They are some of the top influencers in the world writing on a variety of topics. Be sure to check out the comments because they are often filled with the hidden gems. The comments are written by everyday professionals who have a perspective that is often as eye opening as the thought leaders. A couple suggestions of people I follow are <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=22330283" target="_blank">Jeff Weiner</a> (not because I'm sucking up, but because he's talented), <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/michaelmoritz" target="_blank">Michael Moritz</a> of Sequoia Capital and <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/pub/angela-ahrendts/76/3a3/22" target="_blank">Angela Ahrendts</a> of Apple."</p>
<p>Redforn also shared the fact that for his first four years at LinkedIn, he had a 250-mile commute each way. He put over 110,000 miles on his car, just going back and forth from work, which is equivalent to driving around the world more than four times. </p>
<p>"It gave me lots of time to think," he writes. "And one of the benefits is that I'm pretty awesome at driving in the snow."</p>
