<ul class="summary-list"><li>A young Reds fan named Abigail had her first baseball game ruined when her favorite player, <keyword id="3650129" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Joey-Votto">Joey Votto</keyword>, was ejected early.</li><li>Votto made it up to Abigail by sending her a signed ball apologizing for getting kicked out of the game.</li><li>Votto also invited Abigail and her family back to the next day's game for a meet-and-greet.</li></ul><p><keyword id="345515" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Cincinnati-Reds">Cincinnati Reds</keyword> slugger Joey Votto made a great save this weekend after unknowingly ruining a young fan's first ever baseball game.</p><p>On Saturday, Votto was ejected in the first inning of the Reds game against the San Diego Padres.</p><p>What Votto didn't know at the time of his ejection was that a young fan named Abigail had been excited to see her favorite player take the field at her first ever baseball game.</p><p>Thankfully, the Reds social media team and whoever works in fan relations acted swiftly, sending Abigail a signed ball from Votto, in which Joey apologized for getting thrown out of the game so quickly.</p><p>"I am sorry I didn't play the entire game," Votto wrote.</p><p>The next day, Votto and the Reds would go a step further, inviting Abigail and her family back for another game that included great seats and a brief hello with Votto from the clubhouse.</p><p>Abigail looked absolutely delighted to meet her favorite player.</p><p>The Reds would go on to lose on Sunday 3-2, but thanks to Votto's graciousness, probably gained a fan in Abigail for life.</p>

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Joey Votto is one of the most accomplished hitters in MLB, and he put his skill&#xa0;on full display Monday night.</p><p>The Cubs were beating Votto's Cincinnati Reds 7-2 when the All-Star first baseman came to bat against Jose Quintana in the top of the fifth inning. Despite his club's big lead, Chicago skipper Joe Maddon decided to combat Votto's tendency to fly the ball to left field, moving third baseman Kris Bryant to the outfield and leaving shortstop Javier Baez to defend the left side of the infield by himself.</p><p>That's when Votto managed one of the most memorable hitting feats of the month.&#xa0;The Canadian&#xa0;ripped a screaming double down the right field line, overmatching the Chicago defenders who were in position specifically to deny him of a hit.</p><p>Check out the big moment&#xa0;below:</p><p>As the broadcaster said, the Cubs couldn't have stopped that ball from going for&#xa0;a hit if they had seven outfielders. Baseball's sabermetric revolution has led to more efficient defenses, but nothing can account for balls like that one.</p><p>While this was Maddon's first time employing that particular shift with the Cubs, he said it worked for him many times during his tenure with the Tampa Bay Rays. He also said that Votto's prowess at the plate may have limited the shift's effectiveness.</p><p>"Joey Votto right now is ungodly," Maddon said, <a href="http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/20345968/chicago-cubs-use-atypical-alignment-joey-votto-plate-appearance" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">according to ESPN</a>. "Whatever you do, you're taking chances anyhow. It's almost like Tony Gwynn when he was good."</p><p>Votto is batting a magnificent&#xa0;.317/.447/.603 this season, blasting 31 home runs and leading the league in both walks and OPS+. While Votto's <a href="http://www.fangraphs.com/spraycharts.aspx?playerid=4314&amp;position=1B&amp;type=battedball" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">spray chart</a> suggests that Maddon had the right idea in going with four outfielders, the 2010 National League MVP&#xa0;changed his approach ever so slightly, and the result was a ball that the Cubs had no shot at.</p><p>But while Votto's hit was impressive, he couldn't ignite a comeback -- the Cubs scored eight more runs and wound up winning 15-5. The Cubs tried a strange four-player outfield to limit offense, and it still didn't stop Joey Votto

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>The Cleveland Indians lost on Tuesday night due, in large part, to a miscommunication between manager Terry Francona and pitching coach Carl Willis.</strong></li><li><strong>Francona had called for a reliever to start warming up, but on the phone, Willis heard "OP," for Oliver Perez, instead of "OT," the nickname of Dan Otero.</strong></li><li><strong>When Otero entered the game, Joey Votto would hit a go-ahead bases-clearing double to give the Reds a lead they would never give up.</strong></li></ul><p><br>The Cleveland Indians were in great position to extend their lead in the AL Central on Tuesday night, taking a 4-0 lead into the ninth inning against the Cincinnati Reds.</br></p><p>But the Indians fell apart, giving up seven runs to the Reds in the top of the inning thanks, in large part, to a miscommunication between manager Terry Francona and pitching coach Carl Willis.</p><p>Reliever Cody Allen started the inning for the Indians, hitting a batter and giving up two singles and a double to cut Cleveland's lead to just 4-3. After two more walks loaded the bases with two outs, and with slugger Joey Votto approaching the plate, Francona called out for a pitching change, only to realize the wrong man was running in from the bullpen.</p><p><span>"When I saw OT coming through the gate, it was not the guy I was expecting," Francona said.</span></p><p>As Francona explained after the game, the mishap occurred when he called the bullpen to start warming up the next reliever. Francona had asked for "OP" or Oliver Perez, but Willis had heard "OT" the nickname of Dan Otero instead.</p><p>Thus, Otero began warming up, and when the call to the bullpen came through, entered the game. Cleveland Indians blow game after coaches warm up wrong pitcher due to nickname mix-up

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>The Cincinnati Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals with a walk-off, 3-run home run in the ninth inning on Tuesday. But before that, the game was marred by an ugly confontation between Reds first baseman Joey Votto and a fan.</p><p>Thankfully, the ugly story had a happy ending.</p><p>The incident came in the seventh inning with the Reds trailing by one. Votto chased a foul ball down the right-field line and into the first row of the seats. Votto and the fan collided going for the ball, and the ball fell to the ground.</p><p>Votto was not happy, grabbing the Reds logo on the fans shirt and slapping it away in disgust as if to say, "You are a Reds fan!?"</p><p><div>    </div></p><p>This is where things get ugly and we see this all the time.&#xa0;</p><p>The fan did nothing&#xa0;<em>technically</em> wrong. He did not reach out onto the field and did not officially interfere with the play. But, of course, many Reds started blaming the fan for not getting out of the way, that he should have had the presence of mind to know in that split-second that Votto might be able to make a play.</p><p>Votto's reaction only seemed to fuel and justify those reactions by other fans and this guy was suddenly&#xa0;Public Enemy No. 1 in Cincinnati.</p><p>But there is a happy ending.&#xa0;</p><p>Votto eventually calmed down and seemed to feel some remorse for how he acted and for putting a target on the fan's back.</p><p>Votto was seen writing on a baseball in the dugout.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Then, in between innings, Votto went over and delivered the ball to the fan. Here are the plays everybody will be talking about on Wednesday.</p><p><strong>Joey Votto snaps at a fan and then apologizes.</strong>&#xa0;In the 7th inning of a 1-run game, Reds first baseman Joey Votto reached into the first row of the stands to catch a foul ball and dropped it when he collided with a fan also reaching for the ball. Votto reacted angrily by grabbing the Reds logo on the fans shirt as if to say, "Et tu, Brute?" Later, Votto autographed a ball for the fan and posed for a photo with him. The ball read, "Thanks for being so understanding when I acted out of character&#xa0;- Joey Votto." Classy move by Votto.</p><p><div>    </div></p><p><div>    </div></p><p>&#xa0;</p><p><strong>MLB umpire ejected a Phillies fan for heckling.</strong>&#xa0;Well, this is one you don't see too often. Home plate umpire Bob Davidson ejected a Phillies fan for heckling. What is even more bizarre is that the fan wasn't really that close to the field. It looks like he is sitting about 20 rows or so behind the third base dugout. No idea what the fan was saying but it must have been bad.</p><p><div>    </div></p><p>&#xa0;</p><p><strong>Jordan Clarkson made a lot of long 3-pointers in practice.</strong>&#xa0;If there is ever a time when it is OK to overreact to a 45-second clip from a practice, this might be it. It is one thing to make a lot of three-pointers in practice when nobody is guarding you. It is another thing to make 15 three-pointers in a row. But it is something else entirely when you make 15 three-pointers in a row from the mid-court circle. That's what Clarkson, the Lakers' third-year guard does here. This probably won't make Clarkson the next Stephen Curry, but it does suggest that the NBA court is getting bigger and defenders are going to have to start guarding out to the mid-court stripe soon, because teams are taking this shot seriously.</p><p><div></div></p><p>&#xa0;</p><p><strong>A this-is-cool bonus</strong>. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Jennifer Stewart/Getty</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><ul><li><strong>Giancarlo Stanton is coming off a career season, but the Marlins plan to trade him anyway.</strong></li><li><strong>The right fielder will reportedly use his no-trade clause to block any potential deal that would land him with the Boston Red Sox or St. Louis Cardinals.</strong></li><li><strong>Other teams with reported interest include the Giants, Phillies, and Dodgers.</strong></li></ul><p> </p><p>Just two weeks into the MLB offseason, teams have already started to jockey for position to acquire one of the biggest prizes on the trade market: the Miami Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton.</p><p>Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports <a href="https://www.fanragsports.com/heyman-giants-and-cards-favorites-but-many-want-stanton/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">reported from the winter GM meetings</a> that the Marlins have been "encouraged" by initial talks. As many as seven teams are reportedly interested, including the Philadelphia Phillies and the San Francisco Giants, clubs that have been linked to the slugger for weeks.</p><p>While a number of teams would love to add Stanton, getting a deal done won't easy. Depending on whether or not he chooses to exercise his opt-out clause, the 28-year-old could have as many as 11 years remaining on his 13-year, $325 million contract, and he also has a full no-trade clause.</p><p>Sure enough, the first potential roadblock to dealing Stanton has already surfaced. <a href="http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/red_sox/2017/11/jennings_dont_bet_on_red_sox_trading_for_giancarlo_stanton" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">According to Chad Jennings</a> of the Boston Herald:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"A baseball source said yesterday that he's been told Stanton will not accept a trade to either the Red Sox or the Cardinals, another team linked early and often in trade rumors. Perhaps there's some flexibility in that stance, but Stanton's preference is a factor."</p><p>Stanton, a Southern California native, has expressed a desire to play on the West Coast in the past, so it would appear that the Giants have the inside track (they have already discussed <a href="https://twitter.com/JoeFrisaro/status/930482735289917441" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">including outfield prospect Heliot Ramos</a> as part of a trade). The Los Angeles Dodgers are another potential fit. The reigning National League pennant winners have a talented and deep outfield contingent, On Tuesday night, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com <a href="https://twitter.com/Feinsand/status/930566040248991744" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">tweeted</a> that they "are indeed in the mix" for Stanton.</p><p>After missing 131 games between 2015 and 2016, he appeared in almost every game this year, making a memorable run at the 60-home run plateau before falling just short at 59. </p><p>He ended the season with 7.6 Wins Above Replacement, tops among NL position players. He was listed as one of the league's three MVP finalists and will likely get the award over Paul Goldschmidt and Joey Votto when the winner is announced on Thursday night.</p><p>Stanton is the kind of player that any executive would like to have, but the Marlins are under a new ownership group, headlined by Derek Jeter and Bruce Sherman, that wants a clean break from the old regime. Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald <a href="http://www.miamiherald.com/sports/spt-columns-blogs/barry-jackson/article171093362.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">reported in September</a> that the new owners want to slash the payroll by more than $60 million.</p><p>While trade discussions are ongoing, Buster Olney of ESPN recently <a href="https://twitter.com/Buster_ESPN/status/930409741146304512?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.cbssports.com%2Fmlb%2Fnews%2Fmlb-hot-stove-stanton-reportedly-wont-waive-no-trade-clause-for-cardinals-red-sox%2F" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">tweeted</a> that some executives see Miami's asking price as "shockingly high and somewhat out of touch with reality." It seems the Marlins will be able to get a either a big prospect haul or some salary relief, but not both. <p>But Brewers outfielder Carlos Gomez timed his jump perfectly and made a leaping grab to end the game.</p>

Brewers Outfielder Makes Leaping Catch To Rob A Go-Ahead Home Run On The Final Out Of The Game

<p>Evan Longoria of the Tampa Bay Rays is in what would have been his final season before free agency and headed to possibly the largest contract in baseball history.</p>
<p>However, Longoria signed an unprecedented 9-year contract just six days after making his Major League debut and then followed that up with another 7-year extension<sup>1</sup> that will keep him with the Rays for at least 16 seasons through 2023.</p>
<p>By the time the deal is over, Longoria will be 38 and will have made a nice sum of $151.5 million in his career.</p>
<p>That's not bad. But it could have been a lot better.</p>
<p>By signing two contracts well in advance of hitting free agency, Longoria received financial security. But that safety blanket also cost him more than $100 million.</p>
<p><strong>Longoria stands above his peers</strong></p>
<p>In his first six seasons in the big leagues, Longoria has been worth 36.5 Wins Above Replacement for the Rays. That compares quite well to other position players who have signed long-term contracts in recent years, either as free agents or as they were nearing free agency<sup>2</sup>.</p>

<p><strong>The high cost of security</strong></p>
<p>Despite being one of the top players in an era when <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/highest-paid-major-league-baseball-2014-3">21 players will make at least $20 million this season</a>, Longoria will not make $20 million in any of his first 16 seasons in the big leagues, topping out at $19.5 million in 2022, his 15th season.</p>
<p>As a result, despite having competitive salaries early in his career, the other four players will zoom past Longoria in career earnings as they advance in age.</p>
<p>Those four players will have earned an average of $202.2 million through their age-37 season, $50.7 million more than Longoria will have made by the same point in his career.</p>

<p><strong>Longoria may have missed out on the biggest contract in baseball history</strong></p>
<p>Tim Dierkes of <a href="http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/">MLBTradeRumors.com</a> notes that at age 29, Longoria would be relatively young for a free agent and tells us that if he were a free agent after this season, he would probably seek a 10-year contract larger than Alex Rodriguez's record $275 million deal.</p>
<p>"I think the Cano and [Albert] Pujols deals set a precedent for 10 years, which is easier to stomach with Longoria than it was with them<sup>3</sup>," Dierkes told Business Insider. "If I'm Longoria's agent, I'm seeking $300 million...I think the Cano deal (10-years, $240 million) is probably the floor. [At two years younger and with six elite seasons on his resume] I don't see a good reason why Longoria would accept less."</p>
<p>Longoria's career earnings start to look a lot different if he were heading towards a $240 million contract this winter.</p>

<p>In other words, even if we assume Longoria signs at the lower end of the projections by Dierkes, he still lost out on more than $100 million in career earnings by not becoming a free agent.</p>
<p>This is not to say Longoria necessarily made a mistake or that anybody should feel sorry for him. Longoria did attain some security early in his career.</p>
<p>But that security came with a hefty price tag.</p>
