I'd met her when she was a child and, during the course of the first three seasons, it was something I was asked regularly because [George RR Martin's] books suggest there's a possible romance. It always made me slightly uncomfortable."</p><p>Dempsie said that he was often asked questions about this possible romance by shows fans, even way before the romance came to fruition on-screen in season eight.</p><p>"They were asking me to comment on whether I – at the time, a 25-year-old man – would like my character to hook up with a 14-year-old," Dempsie said. "I always avoided answering the questions. But it was something I then had to think about."</p><div type="image" title="gendry game of thrones" height="690" width="920" msid="78876247" hostid="261"></div><p>Dempsie first appeared in "Game of Thrones" in the show's first season, back in 2011, but had a more prominent role in the show's second and third seasons wherein he shared all of his scenes with Williams' Arya. Arya and Gendry always seemed to have a connection in the books, but Gendry (and therefore Dempsie) left the show in season three.</p><p>It wasn't until season seven that Dempsie returned to the show. The final, eighth season saw Gendry and Arya finally reunite, where they turned that possible romance into a full-on hookup.</p><p>Dempsie said that by this time, however, doing a sex scene with Williams was "absolutely fine" as she was now 22.</p><p>"When we were doing season eight, Maisie was a grown woman. 'Game of Thrones' star Joe Dempsie says his sex scene with Maisie Williams was an 'odd transition' as he'd known her since she was a child

<ul class="summary-list"><li>In an interview with Teen Vogue, <keyword id="13604001" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="maisie-williams" source="Orion">Maisie Williams</keyword> was asked about the first time Arya surprised her.</li><li>The 25-year-old ex-"<keyword id="12019469" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="game-of-thrones" source="Orion">Game of Thrones</keyword>" star said it was probably when Arya and Gendry had sex.</li></ul><p>Nearly three years ago, "Game of Thrones" fans had mixed reactions to <a href="https://www.insider.com/game-of-throne-arya-sex-scene-gendry-reactions-twitter-2019-4">a surprising sex scene between Arya Stark and Gendry Baratheon</a>. Now, actress Maisie Williams is joining in on the response, saying she had thought her character was "queer" before receiving that script.</p><p>"The first time I was surprised by Arya was probably in the final series, where she whips off her clothes and sleeps with Gendry," Williams <a href="https://www.teenvogue.com/story/game-of-thrones-star-maisie-williams-always-thought-arya-stark-was-queer">told Teen Vogue in a recent interview</a>. "I thought that Arya was queer, you know?"</p><p>Williams, who is now 25 years old, was 22 when the scene was filmed. She started her career on the show as a young teenager and grew up along with her character. Arya had never shown much romantic interest in anyone throughout the show, instead focusing on developing her own deadly strength and skill (which ultimately helped her kill the Night King). </p><p>But in season eight, episode two ("A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms"), Arya seeks out Gendry on the eve of the Battle of Winterfell. She tells him that she'd like to experience sex before she dies — and given that the next day's fight against the White Walkers looks bleak, she figures it's now or never. Arya strips down and straddles Gendry before the scene changes.</p><p>At the time, people had varying reactions to the scene.</p><p>"Given Arya's development over the course of the series, the sex scene felt out of character for many viewers — and even a bit gratuitous," <a href="https://www.insider.com/game-of-throne-arya-sex-scene-gendry-reactions-twitter-2019-4">Insider reporter Callie Ahlgrim wrote in 2019.</a></p><p>Joe Dempsie, who played Gendry, told the Independent in 2020 that going from working with the very young Williams to filming a sex scene together as adults was <a href="https://www.insider.com/game-of-thrones-gendry-joe-dempsie-arya-sex-scene-maisie-williams-2020-10">an "odd transition."</a></p><p>Williams' recent comments were part of a series about all her "first" experiences, and clearly the sex scene was a standout moment from all eight seasons, given that it was the first time Arya had done something Williams didn't expect. </p><p>Williams doesn't elaborate on how or why she believed Arya's queer sexuality would manifest, and it's worth noting that perhaps the character is simply bisexual. 'Game of Thrones' star Maisie Williams says Arya's sex scene 'surprised' her because she had always thought her character was 'queer'

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Jack O'Connell stars in Netflix's new adaptation of "Lady Chatterley's Lover" with Emma Corrin.</li><li>He told Insider that he had never previously worked with an intimacy coordinator on sex scenes.</li></ul><p>Jack O'Connell has called <a href="https://www.insider.com/truth-about-about-filming-sex-scenes-intimacy-coordinator-myths-2021" target="_blank" rel="noopener">intimacy coordinators</a> "necessary" after working with one for the first time in "Lady Chatterley's Lover," and said that "in hindsight," he wishes there was one on the set of his teen drama series, <a href="https://www.insider.com/photos-what-does-the-cast-of-skins-look-like-now" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"Skins."</a></p><p>The British actor spoke to Insider ahead of the release of Netflix's new adaptation of D.H. Lawrence's seminal novel, in which he plays the role of Oliver Mellors, the taciturn but tender working-class gamekeeper who embarks on a passionate affair with his employer's wife, Lady Constance Chatterley (Emma Corrin).</p><p>Staying true to the story's erotic nature, the film features several intimate scenes between the two, culminating in a euphoric sequence in which they <a href="https://www.insider.com/emma-corrin-exhilarating-naked-scenes-lady-chatterleys-lover-2022-11" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dance completely naked in the rain</a>.</p><p>Full-frontal nudity was required of the actor and his costar, and O'Connell said that such scenes were only possible thanks to the help of "fantastic" <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-sex-scenes-are-filmed-normal-people-intimacy-coordinator-2020-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">intimacy coordinator and movement director Ita O'Brien</a>, who previously worked on the BBC/Hulu series <a href="https://www.insider.com/normal-people-review-hulu-sally-rooney-2020-4" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"Normal People."</a></p><p>Noting that it was his "first experience" of working with someone who has been specifically employed on set to facilitate the filming of <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-are-sex-scenes-really-filmed-movies-tv-2022-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sex scenes</a>, he said he was glad to have them there.</p><p>"I think that it is necessary," he told Insider. "To have someone who's officially appointed to oversee that everyone is comfortable, I think it is vital."</p><h2>O'Connell said it previously fell to other people on set to make sure the actors were comfortable</h2><div type="image" title="Jack O'Connell in Netflix’s new adaptation of &quot;Lady Chatterley's Lover.”" height="1999" width="2666" msid="95980717" hostid="261" sizebytes="279770"></div><p>"In my experience, that job was unofficially designated to the costume department or the makeup department — the people who you're working closest with," O'Connell said, reflecting on explicit scenes he shot earlier on in his career.</p><p>The 32-year-old said that he always found those who had the task of unofficially overseeing intimate scenes fall to them "to be very considerate," but acknowledged that it wasn't necessarily their job.</p><p>"There would always be a sensitive approach to those types of days," and "the costume department would always make sure that you weren't naked for any longer than you had to be," he continued.</p><p>"And then, if you're fortunate enough, your director is also mindful of what's being required from you on that day," he added. </p><p>"I can totally understand why we're in a day and age where that role has to be a specific and official role," he continued. "Obviously, there are very highly publicized accounts of where there's been massive, massive failings in safeguarding. It seems to be a massive step in the right direction, and I'm all for it."</p><h2>Looking back, O'Connell says he wished 'Skins' had an intimacy coordinator</h2><div type="image" title="Jack O'Connell and Emma Corrin star in Netflix’s new adaptation of &quot;Lady Chatterley's Lover.”" height="1999" width="2666" msid="95980719" hostid="261" sizebytes="161850"></div><p>O'Connell landed his breakout role at the age of 18 on the British drama series "Skins," which became a sensation among its teenage audience when it aired, but also caused controversy due to its explicit nature.</p><p>The series — which ran from 2007 to 2013 with a revolving cast of characters every two seasons — was an unflinching look at substance abuse, sex, mental illness, and a myriad of other teenage issues. It launched not only O'Connell's career but those of Nicholas Hoult, Dev Patel, Daniel Kaluuya, Joe Dempsie, and Hannah Murray, too.</p><p>O'Connell made his debut as the lovable but troubled Cook in the 2009 season three premiere, which concludes with his character having sex with his classmate Effy (Kaya Scodelario). He appears in four more sex scenes during the 10-episode-long season and has a few more in the show's fourth season.</p><p>Asked whether he wishes there had been an intimacy coordinator on set at the time, O'Connell responded: "Yeah. In hindsight, yeah."</p><div type="image" title="Skins" height="1200" width="1600" msid="95980721" hostid="261" sizebytes="34472"></div><p>Last year, April Pearson, who played Michelle Richardson in seasons one and two of the teen drama, said that she<a href="https://www.nme.com/news/tv/skins-stars-say-they-didnt-feel-protected-during-sex-scenes-2947233" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> "didn't feel protected"</a> during her own nude scenes.</p><p>On an episode of her podcast titled "<a href="https://www.areyoumichellefromskins.co.uk/about" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Are You Michelle From Skins?</a>," she spoke to Laya Lewis, who played Liv Malone in seasons five and six, who said she felt a similar way. Lewis also said she was told to "skip meals" amid "pressure" to be slimmer during scenes in which she appeared semi-nude.</p><p>"Nowadays you have an intimacy coordinator as a standard for nude, intimate scenes and that just simply wasn't a thing," Pearson said, noting how things have changed over the last decade.</p><h2>Sean Bean — who played the role O'Connell is playing in the 1993 miniseries adaptation — previously said intimacy coordinators 'spoil the spontaneity' of sex scenes</h2><div type="image" title="Sean Bean and Joely Richardson in Lady Chatterley (1993)." height="576" width="768" msid="95980724" hostid="261" sizebytes="31034"></div><p>Interestingly, it has been O'Connell's predecessor in the role of Mellors who has been the loudest detractor of the use of intimacy coordinators. </p><p>Sean Bean, who starred in the BBC's 1993 miniseries "Lady Chatterley" opposite Joely Richardson, said earlier this year that he believes intimacy coordinators <a href="https://www.insider.com/sean-bean-sex-scenes-intimacy-coordinators-spoil-spontaneity-2022-8" target="_blank" rel="noopener">"spoil the spontaneity"</a> on a set during sex scenes.</p><p>"It would inhibit me more because it's drawing attention to things," Bean <a href="https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/25-best-secret-beaches-in-europe-q0q7zbh2g" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told UK's The Sunday Times</a>. "Somebody saying, 'Do this, put your hands there, while you touch his thing... I think the natural way lovers behave would be ruined by someone bringing it right down to a technical exercise."</p><p>The actor noted how "spontaneous" his sex scenes were with Richardson, who returns for the 2022 adaptation to play the young lovers' ally, Mrs. Bolton.</p><p>"It was a joy," he said. "We had a good chemistry between us, and we knew what we were doing was unusual. Because she was married, I was married. But we were following the story. We were trying to portray the truth of what D.H. Lawrence wrote."</p><p>While O'Connell thinks Bean is a "brilliant actor," he said he didn't watch the earlier adaptation.</p><p>"I wouldn't really consider that too helpful beforehand, before going and doing our version," he said, adding: "I wanted to kind of approach it fresh."</p><p><em>"Lady Chatterley's Lover" is streaming on Netflix now.</em></p>

Gendry, who can't swim and has never used a rowboat, takes off in an effort to survive. For one, we're guessing this indicates a generous heaping of fan service in the seasons to come.&#xa0;</p><p>Showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss said <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/game-of-thrones-creators-know-how-show-will-end-2015-4">they know George R.R. Martin's planned ending</a> for the series, but are mostly on their own for figuring out how to get there. Martin has yet to publish the final two books in his series, and Benioff and Weiss have now used up most of the existing source material. Or is this a new idea the showrunners latched onto after the fandom wouldn't let the rowing Gendry go?&#xa0;</p><p>This wouldn't be the first time the showrunners revealed they were paying close attention to the memes or fan theories being circulated online. Season six <a href="http://www.thisisinsider.com/game-of-thrones-cleganebowl-reactions-2016-6">made a reference to Cleganebowl</a> - the epic fight between the Mountain and the Hound people are dying to see. The season six finale also delivered a somewhat meta scene, in which <a href="http://www.thisisinsider.com/game-of-thrones-olenna-sand-snakes-dorne-2016-6">Olenna Tyrell told the Sand Snakes to shut up</a>; something fans have been saying about the Dornish characters since their introduction in season five.</p><p>Dempsie's appearance at the Belfast airport isn't ironclad evidence he'll be in the show, but with no other reason to be in the area (plus fans' desperation to see his character's story resolved) it seems likely Gendry is back. New 'Game of Thrones' actor sighting hints at the return of a fan favorite character

<p><strong>Warning: There are spoilers ahead if you're not caught up with Sunday's "Game of Thrones."</strong></p><p>Sunday's episode of "Game of Thrones" reunited viewers with several characters we haven't seen in a while. There was the return of Bronn (Jerome Flynn) and Blackfish Tully (Clive Russell). All good things must come to an end. Especially by Miltos Yerolemou, the actor behind Arya's beloved sword fighting instructor, Syrio Forel. Meryn Trant killed Syrio in season one, so Yerolemou threw a barb at Ian Beattie on Twitter. In fact, it looked at one point like he might've had an edge on Jon, but he was distracted when he was stabbed in the back by one of Craster's wives. (Or was she a daughter? Hard to tell with that guy.) When he turned around, Jon thrust his sword straight into the back of Karl's head and out his open mouth.
