A few days later, Jive reported an earnings miss, offered up soft guidance and announced that James Larson, the leader of sales, was leaving to become a startup CEO.</p>
<p>And shares took a nose dive, dropping about 19% and hitting a low of $7.11.</p>
<p>Jive had a successful 2011 IPO, opening at $12 with shares hitting over $15 on day 1 of trading. Earlier last year, its shares were over $18. But as 2013 drew to a close, it has struggled and investors are no longer feeling the love.</p>
<p>Jive makes social collaboration software for businesses, a sort of Facebook for business, and is facing an onslaught of competitors as just about every software maker on the planet bakes "social" features into their products. Competitors these days include Oracle, Salesforce, Tibco, IBM, SAP, Microsoft, and the list goes on.</p>
<p>Instead of continuing to slug it out, Jive may have put itself on the sales block, <a href="http://recode.net/2014/03/11/collaboration-software-maker-jive-explores-possible-sale/">reports Re/code's Arik Hesseldahl.</a></p>
<p>Jive had no comment on the report.</p>
<p>The numbers help tell the story. <a href="http://investors.jivesoftware.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=824917">While Jive's 2013 revenue hit $145.8 million, up 28%</a>, its net loss increased to 55 cents per share from 43 cents. That was a big miss. Analysts expected a 44-cent loss.</p>
<p>It then issued softer-than-expected guidance, expecting to end the current year with revenues of $170 million to $175 million and a net loss of 39 to 46 cents per share. The Street was expecting revenues of $176 million and a loss of 46 cents per share.</p>
<p>The bigger question is, if it wants to sell itself who would be interested in buying?</p>
<p>Last year, SAP was rumored to be in talks to buy Jive, but decided not to because SAP felt it already had plenty of similar products, <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-05-24/sap-said-to-end-talks-to-buy-jive-software-in-past-month.html">Bloomberg reported in May.</a></p>

Struggling Jive Software Might Be Looking For A Buyer [Report]

So is sifting through a ton of unnecessary <keyword id="29411" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="email">email</keyword> making sure you didn't miss something important, according to a survey of 2,000 folks by <keyword id="852543" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jive-Software">Jive Software</keyword>.</p>
<p>On average, U.S. workers spend 16 percent of their workday checking irrelevant email, the study finds.That's a little over an hour a day for an 8-hour day. And some people have it much worse. 18 percent said that they spend a quarter of their workday, about two hours, checking useless emails.</p>
<p>Jive calculates that these emails are costing the American economy $2 billion per day in lost <keyword id="23080" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="productivity">productivity</keyword>.</p>
<p>When people weren't reading email from colleagues, they were yapping with them. Some 36 percent said coworkers are their biggest distraction at work, a bigger distraction even than unwanted email.</p>
<p>Jive has a vested interested in this kind of study. It sells collaboration software, an alternative way for coworkers to interact besides email and meetings.</p>
<p>Sill, we have to agree that email is out of control these days.</p>

Your Coworkers Are Your Biggest Distraction At Work, Survey Says

<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>Slack is the new darling of <keyword id="6356323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Enterprise">enterprise</keyword> software. The eighteen-month-old company, which is used by companies for internal communication, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/slack-ceo-stewart-butterfield-interview-2015-4">doubled its userbase since January</a> and was recently valued at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/slack-raising-160-million-at-a-276-billion-valuation-2015-3">almost $3 billion</a>.</span></p><p>Other collaboration companies are now jumping into the space.</p><p>On Wednesday, Jive, a business software company worth about $400 million, officially launched Jive Chime, its own business messaging app.</p><p>Jive Chime allows users to send and receive messages, create group or 1-on-1 chat rooms, and search and share files with other users. It's built for businesses, so there's stronger security, and for an additional $2 per user/month, you get more admin control features as well.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container"><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></p><p>If this sounds familiar, you're not alone.</p><p>Jive Chime is one of the many business messaging apps that's been popping up in the last few years - not just Slack, but also apps like Atlassian HipChat and startups Cotap and TigerText. Just last month, document collaboration app <a href="https://quip.com/blog/chat-rooms">Quip added</a> chat rooms, and file storage companies like Dropbox and Evernote are making messaging part of their products.</p><p>So why would Jive want to join this crowded market?</p><p>"Many of the customers we speak to still use email or WhatsApp to communicate with their teams," Clara Liang, Jive's Chief Product Officer, told us. "There are so many companies out there that aren't even collaborating with any of the communication apps - they're stuck in the old days."</p><p>Liang has a point. If you step away from the high-tech fields of Silicon Valley or New York City, a lot of big companies are still relying on email and text messages to communicate with their coworkers. Using an internal communication software may be a novelty to the thousands of companies that are not as tech-savvy.</p><p>The business collaboration and messaging app space is still in its very early stage. Although companies like HipChat and Yammer have been chipping away at the problem for years, the idea has only started to gain real traction recently.</p><p>Even Slack has "only" 750,000 daily active users and 200,000 paying users. For context, there were more than 119 million full-time employees in the US as of March 2015. Assuming only a quarter of those workers use the internet at work, it would still translate to 30 million potential users.</p><p>Plus, Jive already has over 1,000 businesses using its work collaboration software, making it easier for them to make the transition to Jive instead of any of the other communication apps.</p><p>And that's why Jive's late move into the business messaging app world doesn't sound as outrageous as it might be. Jive is the latest company to chase $2.8 billion startup darling Slack

<p>For Saumya Bhatnagar, being the only woman in a room is far from a novel experience. An engineer by training and currently the co-founder and chief product officer at AI sales rep startup Jeeva, she remembers being the sole girl in her high school's 170-person <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/5-tips-women-career-coding-twilio-2020-8">coding class</a> — and that none of her male peers would sit next to her.</p><p>"I had to make space for myself, and there were plenty of micro and macro aggressions in the grand scheme of things that I had to talk my way through," she told Business Insider. "At the end of the day, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/women-left-out-of-the-ai-investment-boom-risks-bias-2023-10">it's a man's world</a> in the VC, startups, and AI space."</p><p>Bhatnagar isn't alone in her journey. Although the number of women-founded startups has increased, less than 3% of venture capital funding went to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/venture-capital-decline-hurts-female-founders-gender-gap-startup-funding-2023-12">female-only founding teams</a> in 2022, according to PitchBook.</p><p>A handful of women who are well-known as leaders in the AI space — including "Godmother of AI" <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/vcs-like-khosla-and-a16z-backing-robotics-that-use-ai-2024-7">Fei Fei Li</a>, Anthropic president and co-founder Daniela Amodei, and OpenAI's former chief technology officer Mira Murati. But others building startups report facing various gender-related obstacles to success, including bias in the fundraising process, limited mentorship opportunities, and difficulty building meaningful business relationships with men.</p><p>In the AI sector specifically, which has surged in popularity since the release of ChatGPT two years ago, the challenges for female founders are even more pronounced. <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/meet-18-women-who-made-partner-vc-firms-in-2023-2023-11">AI continues to attract significant VC interest</a>, but women in the space face additional barriers compared to their male counterparts, starting at the education level.</p><p>While a degree in engineering or computer science isn't a requirement for launching an AI company, it's often a prerequisite for techies building foundational models to tackle complex machine-learning problems. Women accounted for just 22% of AI and computer science PhD programs in the US in 2019, according to a Deloitte study.</p><p>Women in 2020 made up an estimated 26% of data and AI positions in the workforce, per a World Economic Forum report. And <a target="_blank" href="https://www.uktech.news/diversity/ai-funding-women-founders-20240319">recent data from the UK </a>shows that only about 4% of AI startups in the country have women founders.</p><p>Although Bhatnagar is among the small group of women in the space with advanced technical chops, she says she still notices the gender imbalance in the AI world — and that it, at times, has led to her feeling impostor syndrome and burnout.</p><p>Developing relationships with other women working in the AI space has become a vital lifeline, she said. An active member of online and in-person groups, including <a target="_blank" href="https://www.womenandai.com/">Women and AI</a> and <a target="_blank" href="https://thewomenweadmire.com/">Women We Admire</a>, Bhatnagar said that she's made connections that support her in navigating difficult business dynamics, connecting with female investors, and finding solace in shared experiences.</p><p>"Women are not comfortable asking for help, and there's this idea that perfectionism needs to be showcased at all times," she said. "Finding a community of women has helped me take risks and realize that I'm actually doing okay," she said.</p><p>Vivien Ho, a partner at early-stage fund Pear VC, has watched the meteoric rise of buzzy AI startups during the last two years and noticed that many are run by men, she said. But as a longtime community builder in the Bay Area tech scene, this didn't jive with what she was seeing on the ground. There were plenty of women interested in building AI companies, she said. Many just didn't know how to start.</p><p>This observation was the catalyst for the Female Founder Circles, a community for women engineers interested in building AI startups. Each FFC cycle welcomes a cohort of around 50 women for two months of programming that includes fireside chats with existing female AI founders, company-building workshops with Pear investment partners, and other in-person events designed to help women build meaningful relationships with one another, such as pitch competitions, spa days, and public speaking practice.</p><p>Demand for FFC has exploded, Ho said, with more than 500 women applying for the most recent cohort that kicked off last month. And the program has already been a success: more than 70% of participants end up incorporating their startups, and at least five women have matched with another female co-founder in their cohort, she said.</p><p>"Three of our FFC founders have already raised Series Bs, which is pretty incredible," Ho told BI. "We first meet them, and they're really shy, and then three years later, they're running a 100-person company and making eight figures. It's incredible to see how we can build a community that makes a difference."</p><p>As women in AI create opportunities that could help them succeed, their work parallels women in another once-white-hot subsector of the startup world: at the height of the crypto craze, female-led blockchain startups earned about 6.4%<strong> </strong>of venture dollars in the third quarter of 2022, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bitget.com/blog/articles/bitget-report-the-gender-gap-in-blockchain-startup-funding-press-release">according to data from Bitget</a>.</p><p>Funding in the space has dropped off dramatically during the last two years, and women continue to struggle when it comes to connecting with investors and closing rounds, <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/digital-assets/2024/08/29/what-web3-data-reveals-about-gender-inequality-in-the-crypto-industry/">Forbes recently reported</a>.</p><p>For Shreya Rajpal, Pear VC's FFC was one of the first times she felt genuine, positive support from the people around her. As a software engineer who cut her teeth in startups and on Apple's machine learning initiatives, she was accustomed to being the only woman whose work was judged with more scrutiny than that of her male coworkers.</p><p>"There are a lot of men who aren't very supportive, and being the only woman on a team means that they're often an undue level of attention on your work, so you stand out, for better or for worse," Rejpal told BI. "Pretty early on, it was obvious that I kind of needed to justify my space in the room a lot more compared to other folks."</p><p>Fast forward to today, and Rajpal is the CEO and co-founder of Guardrails AI, which builds risk and reliability systems for generative AI programs. As she's progressed in her career, she's made an effort to build community with other women in tech. It's work that takes significant time, but it's been "life changing" in terms of succeeding as a founder and well worth the effort, she said.</p><p>Guardrails earlier this year raised a $7.5 million seed funding round led by Zetta Venture Partners with participation from Pear, Bloomberg Beta, and GitHub Fund.</p><p>In addition to participating in bigger groups like FFC, Rajpal has sought out mentorship opportunities with other women in engineering, machine learning, and project management.</p><p>"I became friends with a woman who is five to six years older than me and in the industry for that much longer, doing the things that I wanted to do," she said. "Hearing from her and what worked for her, in terms of changing jobs and talking to her about how she made those decisions, was the stuff that ended up being really impactful for me."</p><p>Stephanie Guo, a partner at Sapphire Ventures based in San Francisco, is constantly iterating on community events for women interested in AI that strike the right balance between informational – think fireside chats and panel discussions – and informal ways for women to form connections that turn into mentor relationships.</p><p>These events aren't just for would-be founders: Guo says that while the number of female-funded AI startups can sometimes seem "abysmally small," she's encouraged by the number of women who hold leadership positions at AI startups, funds, and bigger companies.</p><p>"We're creating both the space to have dialogue, but also a networking opportunity," Guo told BI. "These relationships stick, and there are business opportunities that actually form from them."</p>

For women building AI startups, finding community has been the key to success

The only investor in WhatsApp is Sequoia Capital, and the deal was led by Jim Goetz, who now looks like a god.</p>

<p class="p1"><span style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;">Goetz grew up in the Midwest. <span>He graduated with a BS in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Cincinnati and went on to get an MS from Stanford. Goetz got started on a PhD but says he gave it up to start a project manager career. He held a variety of PM roles first at SynOptics and later at AT&amp;T. </span></span></p>

Jim Goetz Is Silicon Valley's New God

Yang called the proposal espoused by Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders "a knee-jerk 20th-century approach to much more nuanced problems."</li><li>The former tech executive running in the 2020 election has supporters in Silicon Valley, where employees from Google, Apple, and Facebook have donated large sums to his campaign.</li><li><strong><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</strong></li></ul><p>Presidential hopeful <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/andrew-yang">Andrew Yang</a> may have been born in New York, but the mood at a money-raising event in Silicon Valley this week was that of a homecoming.</p><p>The Yang Gang's biggest spenders in San Francisco gathered for a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/sam-altman-holds-fundraiser-for-andrew-yang-2019-10">fundraiser</a> on Wednesday afternoon, where the top ticket cost $5,600. Tech investor Sam Altman hosted the luncheon at his home not far from the tech hub's downtown. The living room filled with Yang's supporters, wearing jeans and suit jackets and hats that said "math," a cheeky campaign slogan that the candidate wore on his lapel <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/andrew-yang-usual-american-flag-lapel-pin-math-pin-2019-10">in place of an American flag pin</a>.</p><p>"There's this notion that techies are averse to any sort of conversation about guidelines on technology, and that hasn't been my experience," said Yang, sitting at the front of the room during a half-hour chat with the host. "The technologists I've talked to, they're pretty reasonable."</p><p>Yang sits in the <a href="https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2020-primaries/democratic/national/">single-digit percentages in several national polls</a>, but the former entrepreneur has rallied a group of tech workers who support him, knowing fully that his signature campaign promise is centered on taxing their employers. The presidential candidate wants to give $1,000 a month to every adult American, an <a href="https://www.yang2020.com/policies/the-freedom-dividend/">income that's paid for</a> in part by a value-added tax on goods and services.</p><p>A wide-ranging discussion covered the fundamentals of "universal basic income," the path to pulling the federal government into the 21st century, and the argument against <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/elizabeth-warren-bernie-sanders-democrat-candidates-stance-breaking-up-tech-2019-10#elizabeth-warren-has-made-breaking-up-big-tech-companies-like-facebook-google-and-amazon-a-cornerstone-of-her-campaign-and-she-has-the-most-specific-plan-out-of-all-the-candidates-1">breaking up big tech</a>.</p><p>Yang said he "wouldn't lead with" breaking up big tech as a solution to society's woes, which got a laugh.</p><p>"It's just false that if we were to break up Amazon into four mini-Amazons, that all the malls and mainstream stores would reopen. They would not," Yang said. "And many of these marketplaces gravitate toward one or two winners. ... No one's using Bing because no one wants to use the fourth-best search engine."</p><p>"... To me, the DC-break-up-big-tech approach is unfortunately just a knee-jerk 20th-century approach to much more nuanced problems," he said. "Do I think that consolidation has gone overboard in tech? Yes. Do I think that now the business model of a startup is to get acquired by one of the behemoths and not try to displace them over time? Yes. Does that stifle innovation and some level of creativity and competition? Yes. So these are real problems, but you can't take a sledgehammer to these problems like it's all going to be fixed if I treat you like a railroad. You don't solve these problems by treating them like an oil company."</p><p>A more sophisticated solution involves an "active partnership" with the tech companies, he said.</p><h2>"The best thing we can do would be to knight a group of young people"</h2><p>After the floor opened for questions, a Google software engineer who said he worked in a senator's office when he was younger, asked about modernizing the technology that politicians use to help them work smarter. He remembers the pains of recording data in spreadsheets.</p><p>"What you don't want to do is you don't want to pretend you can transform that kind of culture, unilaterally, overnight," Yang said in response. "In a way, the best thing we can do would be to knight a group of young people like yourself to just to go into various offices and say, 'Hey, look, they're just there as a resource.'"</p><p>Tickets for the event at Altman's home, which included a lunch of charcuterie and cucumber sandwiches, started at $2,000. A VIP pass costs $2,800 a pop, while the "max donor" contribution was $5,600. These funds will fuel Yang's campaign committee and marketing.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>The topic of universal basic income, an idea that is so near to Yang that his <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/11/us/politics/andrew-yang-campaign.html">campaign's website</a> was "ubi2020.com" at the start, came up throughout the event. Its host, Altman, the former head of startup accelerator Y Combinator, is tech's loudest supporter of universal basic income. In the last few years, he led a modest pilot program that gave free cash to people in Oakland. The two joked on stage that "it's harder to give people free money than you think," Yang said.</p><p>"The way I think about it is, if you have a population that's living paycheck to paycheck - and 70% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck," Yang said, "and then you come and say, 'Hey, the magical Asian man wants to give everyone $1,000 a month,' it does not jive with their time-money tradeoffs that they're making all the time, because to them, they have this lived experience where money is very, very scarce."</p><p>Yang has said he plans to finance the cheerfully named "freedom dividend" by creating a tax on financial transactions, among other taxes. A <a href="https://www.yang2020.com/policies/value-added-tax/">value-added tax</a> is similar to a sales tax but it gets collected at every point of the supply chain. For example, if Amazon buys a server for its cloud computing business, it pays a tax on the server. When it buys power, it pays a tax on the power. The tech giant goes on to sell that rackspace, and the end user pays a tax on the price of the computing minus the tax on the server and the power, so as to avoid double taxation.</p><p>An <a href="https://taxfoundation.org/andrew-yang-value-added-tax-universal-basic-income/">analysis</a> by the nonpartisan research group Tax Foundation has cast doubt that Yang's proposed value-added tax of 10% would cover the cost of universal basic income for 236 million adult Americans.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div></div></div></p><p>His plan hasn't turned off all employees at the companies that Yang wants to tax.</p><p>Andrew Marshall, a software engineer who previously worked at Google, started supporting the candidate in February, because he was interested in Yang's ideas around universal basic income. He said after the event that it's unfair to say the value-added tax would only affect companies like Google and Amazon.</p><p>"We can't leverage all of our hopes and dreams on Amazon to fix everything," Marshall said. </p><p>The Center for Responsive Politics, whose website OpenSecrets.org tracks federal campaign spending, <a href="https://www.opensecrets.org/2020-presidential-race/contributors?id=N00042308">lists the companies</a> whose public action committees, employees, or owners have contributed the most to Yang's campaign. Google parent-company Alphabet tops the heap, followed by Amazon, Microsoft, the University of California, and Facebook.</p><p>The Yang Gang has some big names on its rolls, though they were absent from the event. Jack Dorsey, the cofounder and chief executive of both Twitter and Square, has contributed to Yang's campaign; James Monsees, who helped create Juul, and Twitch cofounder and executive Kevin Lin are also donors.</p><p>The long-shot candidate reported one of the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-money-2020-democrats-candidates-have-raised-fundraising-2019-4#andrew-yang-10-million-11">biggest improvements on recent fundraising</a>. His campaign pulled in $10 million in the third quarter, a $7.2 million increase over their second-quarter haul.</p>

<p>VMware queried 376 IT professionals and found that they are increasingly being asked to buy and/or support Macs in the <keyword id="6356323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Enterprise">enterprise</keyword> by employees who want Macs, not Windows machines.</p>
<p>"Microsoft Windows has dominated enterprise desktops for close to three decades but it appears its reign is coming to an end. As BYOPC ["Bring Your Own PC"] and BYOD [Bring Your Own Device] continue to transform the enterprise, Macs have become a popular and preferred option compared to Windows PCs," says Erik Frieberg, VP of Marketing, End-User Computing, <a href="https://blogs.vmware.com/euc/2014/06/apple-enterprise-invasion.html">VMware, in the report</a>.</p>
<p>That is clearly hyperbole (and we'll show you why in a minute), but VMware's research does jive with other stats that show Macs are finally making significant inroads in the lucrative enterprise market.</p>
<p>First, let's add the grains of salt: This survey was a mere 376 people, hardly big enough to showcase the whole world of corporate PC use. It was commissioned by a company that is trying to sell software that competes with Microsoft. VMware wants companies to buy what's known as "virtual desktops," where users download Windows and Windows apps over the network on any device they want, such as a Mac. They would do this instead of buying new Windows PCs.</p>
<p><span>That said, VMware uncovered some interesting nuggets.</span></p>
<h2>Employees are asking for Macs, not just iPads</h2>
<p>73% of respondents said they are supporting Macs because users are asking for them. Only 40% said they are using them to run applications that only run on the Mac.</p>

<p>They are doing this even though managing a bunch of Macs is harder for many of them than managing a bunch of Windows PCs.  Almost 40% said that Macs are harder for IT to deal with than Windows.</p>

<p>This jives with <span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-storms-the-enterprise-2014-6">a similar study of 300 IT professionals commissioned by Jamf Software,</a> which makes its living by helping IT professionals manage Apple devices. It found that nine out of 10 companies officially support Apple products particularly iPhones (91%) and iPads (89%), with more than half supporting Macs (60%).</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">In that survey almost all respondents, 98%, say they expect employees to be using more Apple devices in the next three years.</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></p>
<h2>Consumers are buying Macs</h2>
<p>It's also true that while the PC industry has been in decline, mostly thanks to the iPad and other tablets, Apple Macs have grown more popular. It's not too surprising that as people use iPads and iPhones they also want to use a Mac. Apple has designed its products to work together, everything from getting iMessages on a Mac, to sharing documents and photos in iCloud.</p>
<p>In <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Q4 2013, Apple sold 2.1 million Macs, which represented nearly 14% of the PC market, </span><a href="http://www.gartner.com/newsroom/id/2647517">Gartner reported</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">. That was a whopping 28.5% year-over-year increase over the number of Macs Apple sold year before, compared to 2% growth of the overall PC market.</span></p>
<p>However, that was the holiday quarter, which is heavily influenced by consumer buying. If enterprises were flocking to Macs big sales would also have been seen in<span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> Q1 2014, when Microsoft ended support of Windows XP and companies rushed to upgrade their PCs.</span></p>
<p>Apple sold 1.5 million Macs that quarter, Gartner said, down almost 4% from the year-prior quarter and accounting for about 10% of the overall PC market.</p>
<p>Plus, in sheer numbers, Windows PC sales still out number Macs by a mile, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/hps-toughest-problem-is-not-pcs-2014-5">mostly due to enterprise purchases.</a> People and companies bought 14 million PCs in Q1 2014 and, again, only 1.5 million of them were Macs.</p>
<p>So Apple has a ways to go before Windows reign in the enterprise really ends. But the numbers show that enterprises are definitely paying a lot more attention to the Mac.</p>

VMware Declares That Windows Reign 'Is Coming To An End' ... And The Mac Is Taking Over

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>Salesforce.com officially rolled out a new and improved version of its <keyword id="6356323" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Enterprise">enterprise</keyword> chat product on Thursday, a tool it calls Community Cloud.</p>
<p>And it wants to take on, or at least mimic, LinkedIn with the new product.</p>
<p>Community Cloud is like a custom, private version of LinkedIn for businesses, it says. It lets companies connect with customers, employees, and partners to chat, share files, and so on. It also inks them to apps, news, and other things that people need to do their jobs and help customers.</p>
<p>In a press release, Salesforce explains:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">LinkedIn is an example of a company, that, among other things, in the consumer world, has created a community for recruiters and job seekers. Members can personalize their job search, connect with colleagues and discover and share information about job openings-all from any device. Today, companies want to create their own communities with the same personalization and mobile access of LinkedIn, that are also completely connected to their business processes.</p>
<p>Community Cloud isn't a brand-new product, but an update of a product released about a year ago. Salesforce offered some stats on how well that product is doing: 2,000 active communities, including customers like Cornell University, GE Capital, Honeywell, Key Bank, Pearson, Pono Music, State of Colorado, and Tata Communications. It also said that Deloitte Digital has signed on as a partner to help sell Community Cloud. It says pricing for the service starts at $500 per month.</p>
<p>Salesforce certainly isn't the only one trying to nab a piece of $3.5 billion enterprise collaboration market. Companies from all enterprise sectors are doing the same, including Jive Software, Microsoft with Yammer, Huddle, Atlassian, Cisco, and Infor. All want their customers to use their products to chat and collaborate.</p>

Salesforce.com Wants To Be The New LinkedIn

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>LiveOps</span></p><p class="caption">LiveOps exec before revolt wide</p></div><p></p></div></div>After an internal investigation into allegations of "sexism and a hostile work environment," as employees described it, the new CEO of LiveOps, Keith Leimbach, is out, Business Insider has confirmed. </p><p>He was fired just nine months after being hired.</p><p>Also out: Sam Lawrence, the company confirmed. Lawrence was the chief strategy officer hired by Leimbach. Both executives were let go in the past couple of days, after Business Insider contacted board members inquiring about the investigation.</p><p>The shakeup is the latest example of bad behavior allegations roiling a tech company, in the wake of high-profile reports of harassment and sexism at Uber and at several venture capital firms. Business Insider spoke to seven current and former <span>LiveOps </span>employees about the events that led to the change. </p><p>They described an employee revolt sparked by the arrival of two Silicon Valley execs, whose management style and freewheeling spending sent the Arizona-based call center company into chaos.</p><p>But unlike the case of Susan Fowler, the former Uber engineer who said her complaints of sexism were repeatedly ignored by the company's human resources department, LiveOps' took these complaints seriously, said several of the employees Business Insider spoke to. According to the employees, LiveOps' HR boss Julie Boorse and in-house lawyer Purnima King were instrumental in helping to clue the board of directors into the situation, and ensuring that an independent investigation was completed.</p><h2>He quit in protest, then became CEO</h2><p>The revolt led to the ouster of Leimbach and Lawrence and caused the board to hire back one of the key executives who had quit in protest: COO Greg Hanover. Hanover wasn't just hired back. He was handed the CEO job after Leimbach departed.</p><p>A LiveOps spokesperson explained:</p><p>"Liveops did receive complaints regarding the workplace and quickly engaged a third party investigator and outside counsel to assist in an investigation. Liveops believes that it has taken steps to address any issues that were raised and is glad its employees took the initiative to come forward with concerns about the workplace. As to Greg Hanover's return as the CEO, Greg has long been a valued and respected member of the Liveops team and we are excited that he has returned to the company."</p><p><span>LiveOps would not comment on any specific complaints, citing confidentiality, but Business Insider heard a litany of allegations. </span></p><p><span>One person described a drunken text message, penned by a manager hired in Leimbach's administration, which referred to women using derogatory terms, along with regular workplace jokes full of sexual innuendo and a systemic discounting of women's ideas.</span></p><p><span>Reports of yelling and demeaning treatment of all employees were also common.  </span></p><p><span></span>Lawrence could not be reached for comment but Leimbach alleges that there was really another reason why they were terminated, not having to do with this investigation.</p><p>He believes he and Lawrence were fired because he planned make changes with a vendor relationship, a vendor that has a relationship with a board member. He wouldn't elaborate on what he meant by that, citing the advice of his lawyer.</p><p>"I believe we were terminated for actions that were in conflict at very senior levels related to our intended actions for a specific vendor. I deny any inappropriate behavior," Leimbach told Business Insider.</p><h2>Imploded over the summer</h2><p>LiveOps is a call center operator based in Scottsdale, Arizona. LiveOps gained Valley prestige when it nabbed Maynard Webb as its CEO from 2006-2011. He stayed on as chairman until 2014. Webb is the former COO of eBay, former chairman of Yahoo and a so-called super angel investor. He is no longer involved in LiveOps although one person close to the company said he still owns a stake and was in touch with leadership from time to time. His spokesperson said he was not aware of the investigation.</p><p>In late 2016, LiveOps spun out its contact center software unit into a separate company. In December it hired Leimbach to be CEO of the remaining business, which operates call centers for retailers, hotels and the like. It's about a $40 million company, with about 120 employees, employees said. It's claim to fame is that it's a cloud-based call center that allows the call operators (most of them contractors) to work from home.</p><p>Under Leimbach and Lawrence's leadership, LiveOps practically imploded over the summer, when around 15 managers, many of them women, quit the company shortly after receiving the company's quarterly bonus. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>LiveOps</span></p><p class="caption">LiveOps exec team after employee revolt</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><h2>"Bullying, harassment and sexism"</h2><p>The employee exodus was due to what many describe as a dysfunctional workplace. The internal investigation looked at a wide variety of allegations. </p><p>"There's an intimidation allegation, bullying, harassment and sexism, all that stuff is on the table and folks have examples and witnesses to some events which is what required the board to initiate an investigation led by an outside investigator," one exec told us last week.</p><p>The atmosphere was bad almost from the start. In Februrary 2017, a few weeks after Leimbach took the reins, he gathered several leaders to help him prep for an appointment with a large customer. It was Leimbach's first time meeting some of the LiveOps leadership team and, according to one person, he quickly instilled fear in the group: "Who am I going to fire after this meeting?" he threatened.</p><p>Several people Business Insider spoke to alleged that the new executives engaged in "reckless spending" on things like redecorating their corporate-paid-for apartments or Leimbach expensing his family's flights to visit him in Arizona.</p><p>When it came to the sales team, "He berated them and embarrassed them and has been horrible to them in front of other people," one person said of Leimbach.</p><p>For instance, one time, he forbade a group of employees who had flown out for a customer meeting to board their return flight home and ordered them to continue working instead, according to documents seen by Business Insider.</p><p>He also allegedly crafted a change to the bonus program from revenue targets to revenue and profit targets. When the company missed its revenue targets "by millions" the bonuses were paid at the 100% rate anyway, including the exec team's own hefty payouts, confirmed three people with knowledge of the matter.</p><p>"We shouldn't have gotten bonuses. We didn't meet the revenue. It's not right," one of them said.</p><p>Negative reviews about Leimbach began showing up on Glassdoor and multiple people believed that he was trying to unmask the employees who wrote them.</p><p>We asked Leimbach about the various allegations. He told us:  "Many of the items you describe are specifically addressed in my employment agreement, others are the direct result of driving the changes I was hired to make, and others are outright false. My employment agreement prevents me from commenting further."</p><h2>Employees cheer</h2><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>LiveOps website</span></p><p class="caption">The liveops website</p></div><p></p></div></div>Lawrence, who had served as the Chief Marketing Officer for the workplace collaboration software maker Jive several years ago, earned a reputation for firing people on the spot - often seemingly arbitrarily - and then bringing in his former colleagues. Business Insider has learned of several people who have hired lawyers to explore their options after being let go. </p><p>And some of Lawrence's behavior was described as just plain weird. One person told us about a meeting for company leaders that Lawrence hosted called "acid trip," in which everyone had to stay at his house, which meant sharing a bathroom. He reportedly flew managers in for other meetings and then left before they could present their information to him.</p><p>Lawerence also oversaw the creation of a new website for the company that raised eyebrows. According to several people, Lawrence's corporate bio on the site promoted and linked to his personal podcast, one that explored all sorts of topics such as "How to practice extreme intimacy with Dominatrix-to-the-Stars Jenny Nordbak". (Lawrence was also known back in the day for <a href="http://www.xconomy.com/seattle/2009/07/15/blackbox-republic-led-by-ex-jive-exec-gets-seed-funding-for-sex-positive-social-network/">launching a startup called Blackbox</a>, a short-lived social network about sex.) </p><p>All of this came to head during the investigation. All told about 30 people were involved, multiple people said, so nearly one-quarter of the company.  One person who talked to Business Insider last week told us, "I am an existing employee and am scared of what will happen to me and the company if there is no recourse for their actions."</p><p>But with the announcement that Leimbach and Lawrence were out and Hanover was back, <a href="https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Employee-Review-LiveOps-RVW16612054.htm">employees </a>took to <a href="https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Employee-Review-LiveOps-RVW16601260.htm">Glassdoor</a> to <a href="https://www.glassdoor.com/Reviews/Employee-Review-LiveOps-RVW16687621.htm">cheer</a>. "Finally the board saw what everyone else did. An employee uprising at a dysfunctional tech workplace has led to the exit of the CEO after only 9 months on the job

<p>Yammer has remained in the city, moving into an <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/yammer-1355-market-grand-opening-photos-2013-1">expansive new office</a>.</p>
<p>But after a recent reorganization, not all Yammer employees are reporting to Sacks, Business Insider has learned.</p>
<p>That appears to contradict <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/news/Speeches/2012/06-25Yammer.aspx">statements</a> Microsoft and Yammer executives made at the time the deal was unveiled, as well as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/yammers-culture-microsoft-acquisition-2012-9">recent statements</a> Sacks himself has made about how Microsoft is letting him run the company.</p>
<p>The way Microsoft is handling the integration of Yammer is a matter of intense interest inside and outside the company. People want to know:</p>
<ul>
<li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">if Yammer can keep its <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/yammers-culture-microsoft-acquisition-2012-9">distinct startup culture</a>;</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">if Microsoft can give Yammer resources and room to grow without being heavy-handed;</span></li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">if Microsoft can retain entrepreneurial executives like Sacks and his top team.</span></li>
</ul>
<p>The answers to those questions bear heavily on the likelihood Microsoft will profit from the money it has spent on Yammer, and its ability to woo other fast-moving Silicon Valley startups.</p>
<p>Dan'l Lewin, Microsoft's most senior executive in Silicon Valley, told Business Insider just a couple of weeks ago that the software giant wants to be hands-off with Yammer to preserve what makes it unique. </p>
<p>Here are the details of the reorganization, according to informed sources we've spoken to with direct knowledge of the matter.</p>
<p>Yammer's disparate marketing functions used to report through different executives to Sacks. <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Now corporate marketing, product marketing, and sales marketing form a single marketing group, reporting to an executive named <keyword id="1770425" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Viviana-Faga">Viviana Faga</keyword>. (</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">Yammer's vice president of marketing, Dee Anna McPherson, is leaving the company, according to a note she posted on Facebook.)</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"><span>It's not clear how big the marketing group at Yammer is, but about 50 Yammer employees include marketing in their job titles on LinkedIn. Yammer has about 450 employees.</span></span></p>
<p>Faga is a <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/vivianafaga">former Salesforce and Jive marketer</a> who joined Yammer in May 2012, shortly before the Microsoft deal. She is well-regarded, according to a former colleague we spoke to.</p>
<p>Instead of reporting to Sacks, Faga will report to Jared Spataro, an <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/jaredspa">executive in Microsoft's Office division</a>.</p>
<p>At a conference in November, Spataro unveiled Microsoft's plan to <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/microsoft-slashes-prices-on-yammer-2012-11">sell Yammer in combination with SharePoint and Office 365</a>, its major online-collaboration offerings.</p>
<p>Sacks continues to report to Office Division executive Jeff Teper,* and most Yammer employees will continue to report up to Sacks. </p>
<p>Just not all—as Microsoft and Yammer repeatedly promised at the time the deal went through.</p>
<p>We asked Microsoft and Yammer for comment. They did not respond to our requests.</p>
<p>To be clear, this new organization may be the best thing for Yammer in the long term. A marketing organization that is well-integrated into Microsoft will likely be the best way to get a benefit from its immense sales force. We also understand that Yammer's executives, not Microsoft's, proposed this arrangement. </p>
<p>But it goes against a promise Microsoft made at the time it bought Yammer—that the business would run as it did as a startup, under the undivided leadership of its founding CEO.</p>
<p>And that's already raising questions inside and outside Yammer.</p>
<p>When we shared these facts with one well-placed Internet executive, he simply said, "Wow."</p>
