"Panchayat" revolves around Abhishek Tripathi (Jitendra Kumar), an engineering graduate who for lack of a better job option, joins as secretary of a panchayat office in a remote village named Phulera in Uttar Pradesh. The eight-episode series, which premiered with its first season in April 2020, was an instant hit on Prime Video and garnered overwhelming response leading to a second season that came out in May 2022. "'Panchayat' is one of the most loved Indian Amazon Originals, resonating not only with audiences in India but also across the globe. 'Panchayat' season three to come out on Prime Video on May 28

She ultimately ended up calling the office of the deputy inspector general of police. The officer heard her out and convinced her to go in for counselling instead. However, it throws up a host of sites and numbers to contact, including helplines such as that run by Aasra, a crisis prevention centre. "On January 3, I got a call from the girl on my public number. She was quite nervous and was about to end her life. She told me she had even searched how to kill herself on Google. Among the search results, she told me, she found my number. I heard her out and told her to come to my office so we could talk about it in detail," DIG <keyword id="4045611" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="jitendra-kumar-shahi">Jitendra Kumar Shahi</keyword>, told TOI. The girl turned up at his office in a while and narrated her story. She had been in a relationship with a boy for several years, but after the boy got a government job recently, he allegedly changed his mind about marrying her under pressure from his family. "We come across such cases every day. Sometimes girls level harassment or assault charges after a relationship ends. This girl was just deeply traumatized and wanted help. She made no allegations against her boyfriend and in fact spoke warmly of him. I asked the station officer of the women's police station to counsel the couple and look into the matter," the DIG told TOI. The SO of women's police station, Prabha Singh, told that two rounds of counselling had been done so far. "On the day the girl met the DIG, he sent her to me and I advised her to become stronger and that there was no need to be afraid of anybody. Today, we summoned the boy and also had a counselling session with him, in the presence of the girl and advised the couple about the options they had to live better lives and have a good future."

New Delhi, Feb 17 () Markets regulator Sebi has levied a fine of Rs 25 lakh on HBJ Capital Services Pvt Ltd and its four directors for not complying with its directions that barred the entities from acting as investment adviser and alternative investment fund. The four directors are-- Kumar Harendra, Amrita Singh, Abhishek Kumar Singh and Jitendra Kumar. The entities are jointly and severally liable to pay the penalty, Sebi said. Through an interim order passed in June 2015, Sebi among other directions had directed the firm and its directors to desist from acting as investment adviser and alternative investment fund. However, the Securities and Exchange Board of India found that promoters of HBJ have violated Sebi directions and are rendering investment advisory services in the name of OSAR Capital. Sebi had also asked the firm to withdraw all advertisements, representations and websites related to investment advisory services but they failed to do so. Besides, HBJ did not remove its publication, documents and websites in relation to the activities as an investment adviser activity. Additionally, funds kept in the bank accounts were also withdrawn by HBJ, in violation of Sebi's interim order. Through separate orders, Sebi levied a fine of Rs 25,000 each on four individuals for violating provisions of the Securities Contracts (Regulation) Act. The entities had transferred and received shares of L&amp;T Finance Holdings Ltd to and from a client in off-market transactions for which they were required to receive and make payment considerations. "Jitu had worked in the Department of Cardio-thoracic Surgery since the mid-1990s and came back to UHW in 2006 after a brief stint abroad," the board said. "He was an incredibly dedicated surgeon who cared deeply for his patients. He was well-liked and greatly respected by one and all. He was a very compassionate and a wonderful human being," the tribute read. The Board added that his commitment to the hospital's special facility had been "exemplary". Rathod, whose age remains unconfirmed, is survived by his wife and two sons. He is among a growing number of medics who have lost their lives on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic across UK hospitals, where the COVID-19 death toll mounted to 5,373. Bihar might be on the cusp of a major generational shift in politics as it braced for Tuesday's counting of votes for the assembly election, with most pollsters predicting a landslide for the five-party Grand Alliance led by the young RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav. Counting will be taken up at 55 centres across 38 districts where the outcome will decide the fate of the Nitish Kumar government that has helmed the state for a decade and half. Most exit polls have predicted a rout for the ruling JD(U)-BJP combine and a resounding victory for the Grand Alliance (Mahagathbandhan) led by RJD's 31-year-old chief ministerial candidate Tejashwi Yadav, who has thrown down the gauntlet at redoubtable Nitish Kumar, the battle-scarred veteran more than twice his age. The Election Commission is making sure that the winds of potential change cause no disruption in the counting process. According to Chief Electoral Officer H R Srinavasa, central armed police forces have been deployed at the strong rooms, where the EVMs have been stored since the completion of voting, and the halls where these will be unsealed Tuesday morning after counting of postal ballots gets over. The state has 243 assembly constituencies and the most keenly watched will obviously be Raghopur in Vaishali district from where Tejashwi Yadav is seeking re-election. Kumar is a member of the legislative council and has not contested the assembly election. Raghopur has been in the past represented by his parents Lalu Prasad and Rabri Devi both former chief ministers. Tejashwi's elder brother Tej Pratap Yadav is contesting from Hasanpur in Samastipur district. In addition, Tuesday's counting will also decide the political fate of nearly a score of ministers. Prominent among them are Nand Kishore Yadav (Patna Sahib), Pramod Kumar (Motihari), Rana Randhir (Madhuban), Suresh Sharma (Muzaffarpur), Shrawan Kumar (Nalanda), Jai Kumar Singh (Dinara) and Krishnanandan Prasad Verma (Jehanabad). With much of the NDA's election narrative focusing on RJD's association with "jungle raj", an allusion to the alleged collapsed law and order during the 15 years when Lalu-Rabri ruled the state in succession, the fate of "bahubalis", leaders known for strong arm tactics, will also be keenly watched. Two of the most notorious criminal-turned-politicians- Anant Singh (Mokama) and Reetlal Yadav (Danapur)- are contesting on RJD tickets. A win for the RJD-led coalition will bring a redemption of sorts for Tejashwi Yadav whose leadership abilities were called into question after his party failed to win a single seat in the Lok Sabha elections last year. The NDA had won 39 of the 40 seats and one had gone to the Congress, an RJD ally. It may also revive the fortunes of the three Left parties--The CPI, CPI-M and CPI-ML--which were consigned to near oblivion over the past two decades. The five-party 'Mahagathbandhan' also comprises these three Left parties, which were a force to reckon with in the past. Election officials and district administrations face the daunting task of restraining supporters of political parties from crowding the counting centres amid the COVID-19 outbreak. Prohibitory orders will be be place outside the counting centres to prevent people from gathering in large numbers, officials said. According to Srinivasa, while 19 companies of the central armed police forces will be deployed at strong rooms and the halls where counting will take place, another 59 have been entrusted with maintaining law and order. Each company comprises roughly 100 personnel. Additional Director General of Police (Headquarters) Jitendra Kumar said Bihar Military Police and local police will also chip in while senior officials will keep a watch through display screens connected to CCTV cameras installed at the counting centres. By Aditi Khanna London, Apr 11 () The UK's Opposition Labour Party on Saturday joined calls alongside Indian-origin doctors for a probe into the "disproportionate" number of black and minority ethnic (BAME) medics dying from the novel coronavirus in the country.The move comes as UK health secretary Matt Hancock confirmed that 19 National Health Service (NHS) workers have died with coronavirus since the outbreak began, around 10 of whom were of BAME backgrounds including Indian-origin doctors."The disproportionate number of BAME doctors who have died from coronavirus is deeply disturbing," said Marsha de Cordova, Labour's Shadow Women and Equalities Secretary."It reflects the shocking underlying inequalities facing BAME communities as a whole - who are disproportionately represented in the numbers of people getting the virus. COVID-19: UK Oppn joins calls for probe into higher ethnic minority deaths

New Delhi, Mar 16 () Capital markets regulator Sebi on Monday imposed fines totalling Rs 3 crore on a real estate company and its directors for fraudulently collecting funds from thousands of people in Madhya Pradesh in the name of providing high returns. The company Garima Real Estate &amp; Allied Ltd and its six directors -- Banwari Lal Kushwah, Balkishan Kushwah, Shivam Kushwah, Banabarilal Lodhi, Bijendra Pal Singh and Jitendra Kumar -- have been asked to pay this penalty within 45 days, the regulator said in its order. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) said the Finance Ministry's Department of Financial Services had forwarded to it in September 2012 an order dated July 13, 2012, passed by the High Court of Madhya Pradesh (Gwalior bench). The order was passed pursuant to a public interest litigation seeking order of an enquiry against various financial companies including Garima Real Estate &amp; Allied Ltd for allegedly cheating thousands of residents of Madhya Pradesh by asking them to make deposits promising higher returns ranging from 15-20 per cent. The High Court had directed that the copy of its order be forwarded to the various authorities including Sebi to take appropriate action. After looking into the matter, Sebi concluded that Garima was operating a Collective Investment Scheme (CIS) and mobilising money from investors without obtaining necessary registration from the regulator. Sebi, subsequently, passed an order in May 2016 declaring the schemes of Garima as CIS and also initiated adjudication proceedings against the company and its directors for alleged violations of regulations prohibiting fraudulent and unfair trade practices, and also for failure to comply with its orders directing winding-up of unlawful schemes. Sebi said its show-cause notices returned undelivered from their respective addresses in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, after which its officials also visited the addresses to affix the notices at the places. However, no addresses could be found except for the company and one of its directors in the national capital. A public notice was also issued in English and Hindi newspapers in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan in August last year, asking the noticees to revert to Sebi for personal hearings. While no reply was received from any of the noticees, Sebi decided to go ahead with its proceedings and relied on the submissions made by the company during earlier proceedings wherein it had admitted to mobilisation of funds. The company had informed Sebi in December 2013 that it had collected more than Rs 55 crore from nearly 1.08 lakh investors, but repaid nearly Rs 45.87 crore, leaving an outstanding amount of Rs 9.35 crore towards 15,683 investors. However, the company could not prove veracity of its refund claims with documents. Sebi said the company and its directors have not only breached law, they have also shown obstinacy to comply with earlier directions and the gravity of this matter cannot be ignored as non-compliance of the directions is continuing till date after lapse of more than three years. Sebi penalises realty firm for fraudulently promising high returns

By Aditi Khanna London, Apr 27 () An Indian-origin general practitioner, who came to the UK in 1973 after completing his medical training in India and was working as a doctor in East Africa, has died of COVID-19, his National Health Service (NHS) Trust in Essex, south-east England, said in a tribute.Dr Kamlesh Kumar Masson, 78, described as an "excellent clinician", lost his fight against the deadly virus at University College London. "We were very sad to hear of the passing of Dr Masson, he was a well respected and liked general practitioner (GP) in Thurrock, with a significant contribution over the last 30 years in the Borough caring for patients and providing support," said Dr Kallil, a fellow GP and Chair of the NHS Thurrock Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). "Later he provided GP services in both Thurrock and Basildon. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Dr Masson for his commitment and passion and our condolences to his family for their loss," he said. Masson worked across the UK in Ashby De La Zouch, Kings Lynn and other parts of the country before settling down with his family in the locality of South Essex in 1975, where he established his career in General Practice. Kamlesh founded Milton Road Surgery, Grays, in 1985 and worked there continuously until 2017. He then went on to do locum work across Thurrock and Basildon until his last working day of March 12 this year. "He was an excellent clinician whose drive to constantly improve his clinical skills and knowledge with passion and enthusiasm will remain with us all as a reminder to always try to be the best. He was recognised in the locality by patients, colleagues and peers as a dedicated, determined, positive individual who would always do his utmost to help in all endeavours," his family said in a tribute statement. "Dr Masson was an honest, kind and generous man who was deeply respected by anyone who was privileged to cross paths with him. He was jovial, funny and kind, always wanting to make the best of any situation," it noted. Masson contracted COVID-19, which caused bilateral pneumonia requiring admission to Basildon Hospital and then University College London Hospital on March 31, which marked his 78th birthday."Dr Masson fought bravely, but tragically lost his battle with COVID-19 on April 16th 2020. Our lifelong thanks will go to the doctors and staff at University College London Hospital who fought tirelessly to save a hero's life. "Dr Masson was taken from us too soon and still had so much to give. He had practised medicine for over five decades and was a dedicated servant to the NHS for 47 years. He would have wanted to practise medicine for many more years to come. He was a true gentleman who will be missed, but not forgotten," his faily said. A number Indian-origin medics, aged between 58 and 80, have lost their lives on the frontline of the COVID-19 fightback in recent days, including Dr Manjeet Singh Riyat, the UK's first Sikh emergency medicine consultant, Dr Rajesh Kalraiya, a consultant paediatrician originally from Nagpur, Dr Jitendra Kumar Rathod, originally from Gujarat, and Birmingham-based Hamza Pacheeri.The novel coronavirus has claimed 20,732 lives in the UK. By Aditi Khanna London, Apr 9 () Indian-origin doctors in the UK have begun putting in place processes to conduct in-depth research into the role of ethnicity in greater susceptibility of some patients of South Asian origin to develop more severe symptoms of the novel coronavirus and die of the disease. A report by the UK's Intensive Care National Audit and Research Centre (ICNARC) this week revealed that the country's ethnic minority population is more likely to require intensive care admissions, nearly triple the 13 per cent proportion in the UK population as a whole."We have a team of researchers on this because it is important to analyse the factors behind these differentiating factors so that communities can put additional preventive measures in place," said Dr Ramesh Mehta, the President of the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (BAPIO), the main representative group for Indian doctors in the UK. "The reasons behind this trend will not be any one thing but a complex set of factors, be it Vitamin D deficiency, the lack of social distancing measures within a large Indian family household set up or a genetic predisposition. We will know only once we have the relevant data to analyse," he said.BAPIO has written to the Chief Medical Officer of England, Professor Chris Whitty, and Medical Director of NHS England Stephen Powis, this week requesting all the official data available on COVID-19 hospital admissions for its research."The most recent ICNARC data of UK intensive care unit attendance is some of the first signals of the concern that COVID-19 has a more severe (lethal) phenotype in BAME [Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic] groups, with more than 25 per cent being Black or Asian, and more than a third being non-Caucasian," notes the letter.It adds: "We need a better understanding of the issues of BAME mortality in the context of the general population, particularly if it helps us manage sick and vulnerable groups, and so that we can be accurate in our messaging."We are therefore asking that the data for COVID cases, and most certainly those who have died as a result of the illness, incorporates ethnicity and profession, as well as the usual demographic data." The concern around the limited data available so far is also linked to hundreds of Indian-origin retired doctors answering the National Health Service (NHS) call to arms for them to return to the hospital frontlines to assist during the mounting workload as a result of the pandemic. "There is very limited evidence and there are so many variables hence a proper study needed. Meanwhile, we propose that irrespective of ethnicity, senior and retired clinicians should be redeployed preferably away from frontline duties," said Professor Parag Singhal, one of the doctors on the NHS frontlines."BAME doctors should discuss their underlying health issues with their employers to assess the risk," he said.Indian-origin doctors, who make up a large chunk of the NHS workforce, are already among the victims of the deadly virus in the UK, including cardiac surgeon Wales-based Jitendra Kumar Rathod, 58, originally from Gujarat, and Birmingham-based Hamza Pacheeri, 80, from Kerala. "Just as there is uncertainty about future predictions for the population, we don't fully understand the COVID-19 related impact on the workforce, and their safety is paramount," notes BAPIO in its letter, a copy of which has also been sent to NHS England and Public Health England. By Aditi Khanna London, Apr 17 () A new academic tie-up between one of the UK's leading research institutions, Imperial College London, and a key doctors' group in the UK on Friday announced the launch of a new Research Forum to analyse the higher death rates from COVID-19 among Indian-origin and ethnic minority healthcare professionals.The British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (BAPIO) said the new Research Forum study will help target measures to mitigate risks and obtain a better understanding of incidence, outcomes and risk factors behind a "significantly" higher rate of coronavirus related mortality among black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) medics. The forum comes as Dr Rajesh Kalraiya, a consultant paediatrician originally from Nagpur, became the latest Indian-origin doctor to die from COVID-19 this week."It is very traumatic to hear of the passing of a colleague and friend, who had graduated from the same medical school as me in Nagpur," said Dr Ramesh Mehta, President of BAPIO."It is an opportune time for us to be launching this new Research Forum to analyse the differentiating factors behind the significantly higher mortality among BAME healthcare professionals, even though they make up just 20 per cent of the National Health Service (NHS)," he said.A team of researchers from the School of Public Health and Department of Public Health and Primary Care at Imperial College London and other leading academic institutions will come together for what has been described as a "landmark" drive. The Research Forum is chaired by Dr Indranil Chakravorty, editor of the journal 'Sushruta' and would include eminent researchers such as Professor Neena Modi, Professor of Neonatal Medicine at Imperial College London; Professor Mala Rao, Professor of Epidemiology, Imperial College London and Medical Lead for Workforce, Race and Equality Standards (WRES) at NHS England; and Professor Geeta Menon, Postgraduate Dean, Health Education England, south London.Their research has the potential to give data required to delineate vulnerable groups in the pandemic and give clear advice on how to reduce the impact on ethnic minorities."I have great ambitions of how we can marry research with tangible favourable outcomes to tackle COVID-19, and I look forward to the challenges we will no doubt face," said Chakravorty.The new study also aims to establish a new research database as a national resource for the scientific communities to support other studies to improve the future wellbeing of NHS healthcare staff."This new initiative that will provide rigorous research evidence to improve the health and wellbeing of colleagues throughout the NHS during the present pandemic, and in the future," added Modi, who is also incoming president of the Medical Women's Federation in the UK.The new tie-up comes as the UK government announced a wider review into the disproportionately high death rates and serious coronavirus cases among the country's BAME population. BAPIO said both initiatives will run parallel as it has also been invited by Sir Simon Stevens, CEO of NHS England, to be part of a panel to draw up an action plan to take that investigation forward."The work could have far-reaching consequences for our communities, now and in the future," said Dr JS Bamrah, BAPIO chairman.The focus on Indian-origin and minority ethnic healthcare workers as the first 10 medics on the NHS frontlines to die from the virus came from BAME communities, including two Indian-origin doctors – 58-year-old Jitendra Kumar Rathod, originally from Gujarat, and Birmingham-based Hamza Pacheeri, 80, from Kerala, with Dr Kalraiya from Nagpur, 69, has been added to the death toll this week.
