The company announced this after 56 out of the 74 scheduled matches were played during IPL 2023. Viacom18 is the digital streaming partner of IPL after having bagged the digital rights for the 2023-27 cycle for $2.7 billion. The IPL 2023 season is streaming for free, giving users access to matches in several Indian languages as well as English. IPL 2023 scores over 1,300 crore video views on JioCinema in the first five weeks

As per a study conducted by NielsenIQ commissioned by Amazon for TV streaming trends, 97% of Indians prefer to stream their favourite movies and shows at dinner time. The good news is that they’re not cutting down on family time, as 74% watched these services with family, especially spouses and children. Family streaming also means they all want to watch it together on their big screens. According to the study, 78% respondents prefer streaming content on their TVs through streaming sticks, smart TVs, and set-top-boxes as compared to smartphones, tablets and laptops. TV equals painless streaming In addition to family time, TV watching offers ergonomic comfort. “Viewing on TV may also allow one to maintain a comfortable body posture, alleviating the aches and pains sometimes associated with watching content while holding the phone,” the study says. Adding to this is the active broadband connections at most homes. TVs also provide better video and sound quality, and convenience of accessing a variety of content across OTT providers and online sources. Voice assistants, and the convenience of watching live shows and DTH channels all in one single screen also helps. “Online video streaming has come a long way since its inception, and so has streaming habits of consumers. What has remained a constant is our preference to view content on the biggest screen in our homes – the television,” said <keyword id="20216460" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="parag-gupta" source="keywords">Parag Gupta</keyword>, Director and Country Manager, Amazon Devices India. What does India love to stream? Almost 66% of respondents of the study also said that they streamed five hours daily over the weekend. On weekdays, most of them keep it down to three hours of streaming. As per the study, India loves to watch comedy – which is the most popular genre of content watched. It’s closely followed by sports, thriller, romantic, horror, international TV shows, and news in order of preference. Ormax too recently released a report on the most streamed movies and shows on OTT. <keyword id="19911186" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="shahid-kapoor" source="keywords">Shahid Kapoor</keyword>’s Farzi became the most watched Hindi web series with a viewership of around 37 million. Anil Kapoor’s The Night Manager however comes a close second with 28.4 million. Bhuvam Bam starrer Taaza Khabar came at number three with a viewership of 23.5 million. Made in Heaven season 2 ranked at number 10 with 15.7 million. “Farzi is the only show to cross the 30 million viewership mark in 2023, and is now the most-watched subscription video on demand (SVOD) series in India of all time. Two advertising video on demand AVOD shows from JioCinema, i.e., Asur 2 &amp; Taali, feature in the top five most-watched shows of the year,” said Ormax. The uncertain global economic conditions and competition between JioCinema and <keyword id="421566" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="star-sports" source="Orion">Star Sports</keyword> for advertiser budgets have resulted in a weak start to IPL 2023. On the opening day, the number of TV advertisers was 40% lower than last year, with only 31 live match advertisers against 52 last year. <keyword id="50691" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="digital" source="Orion">Digital</keyword> advertising fared worse, with a 70% drop in advertisers on Day-1 compared to last year when Disney+ Hotstar held the rights. As per media buyers, who carry out competition audits, for Digital, the number of advertisers on Day 1 this year stood at just under 50, compared to 160 last year. It is worth noting that TV and digital advertisers often have different budget profiles, with larger advertisers typically choosing TV and smaller advertisers opting for digital. However, many notable advertisers from last year's IPL, such as <keyword id="3320944" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="byjus" source="Orion">Byjus</keyword>, Cred, Muthoot, and Netmeds, were absent this year. Despite the drop in advertisers, media buying agencies expect spending to pick up as viewership data from the opening match has been encouraging. As per BARC, Star Sports saw a 29% increase in TV ratings, with viewership reaching 140 million on the opening day. <keyword id="2003276" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jio" source="Orion">Jio</keyword>Cinema reported a peak concurrency of 1.6 crore whereas Star Sports recorded 5.6 crore. Media reports suggest that Star Sports had clocked Rs 2,200 crore in ad revenues just ahead of the start of IPL 2023, while Jio had achieved Rs 1,400 crore. It is important to note that TV ad rates have seen a decrease this year, and the number of TV sponsors has decreased from 16 to 12 since last year's IPL. Disney Star holds the TV broadcasting rights for IPL, having spent $3 billion for the period from 2023-2027. Last year's IPL had around 100 TV advertisers and 200 advertisers on Digital in total. IPL 2023 opens with drop in advertisers: 40% drop for TV, 70% for digital

On a yearly basis, its profit grew nearly 28.6%. Its revenue from operations grew 2.4% sequentially to ₹29,195 crore as compared to ₹28,506 crore in the previous quarter. On a year-on-year basis, it saw an increase of nearly 20.8%. The oil to telecom conglomerate attributed the growth to strong growth in customers and data consumption. “Jio delivered record revenues and EBITDA driven by strong momentum in customer growth and data consumption,” said Mukesh Ambani, chairman and MD at Reliance Industries. Akash Ambani, chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm, said that, “Jio is undertaking the most ambitious and fastest ever 5G rollout plan for any country of our size. Within three months of launch, Jio True5G is now available across 134 cities and would be available across India by December 2023.” “In addition, Jio will connect over 100 million premises with JioFiber and JioAirFiber offering unparalleled digital experiences. We will also empower small merchants and businesses with cutting-edge, plug-and-play solutions delivered from the cloud,” he added.
