The Coronavirus pandemic and lockdowns across the world have led to an increase in the usage of video conferencing apps. Zoom has emerged as one of the most popular platforms and has witnessed a substantial increase in usage. JioMeet features The JioMeet app allows users to set up a one on one call or a conference call with up to 100 participants with enterprise-grade host controls. The JioMeet app offers similar features such as Zoom, including the ability for users to join a meeting without having to sign in. Users can simply use a ‘Meeting ID’ or a ‘Personal link name’ to join a meeting. JioMeet allows users to host or join an unlimited number of calls. Additionally, unlike Zoom that limits the duration of calls with three or more users to 40 minutes, JioMeet has said that its calls can last even for up to 24 hours. The ‘enterprise grade host controls’ offered in JioMeets include password protection for meetings, multi-device login support, ability to share screen, a waiting room, ability to schedule meetings and more. New Delhi, July 2 (IANS) Amid growing calls for 'Made in India' digital tools, Reliance Jio has launched a free video-conferencing application called JioMeet, taking on US-based Zoom platform. According to the JioMeet description on Google Play Store, the application can be used for 1:1 video calls and hosting meetings with up to 100 participants with enterprise-grade host controls. Other highlights include easy sign up with either mobile number or email ID, meeting in HD audio and video quality. The application can be used for creating instant meetings to chat with friends and also to schedule a meeting in advance and share meeting details with invitees. JioMeet offers unlimited meetings per day and each meeting can go uninterrupted up to 24 hours. The application can be used on Android, Windows, iOS, Mac, SIP/H.323 systems. JioMeet has already been downloaded for over 10,000 times from Google Play Store. What it offers Gigafiber is a mega package offered by Jio, which will offer broadband, TV and fixed landline plans. But it’s not going to be an ordinary plan. The previous two models which were priced at ₹1,500 and ₹2,999 have already been a big hit in the market, for giving smartphone features to a user at the most basic price. New Delhi, Jul 4 () After raising billions of dollars from the likes of Facebook and Intel for its digital business, billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance Industries has launched JioMeet video conferencing app with unlimited free calling that is being seen as rate war on rival Zoom. The JioMeet video conferencing app is available across Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and web since Thursday evening after beta testing. According to the company website, JioMeet supports HD audio and video call quality with up to 100 participants and offers features like screen sharing, meeting schedule feature and more. But unlike Zoom, it does not impose a 40-minute time limit. Calls can go on as long as 24 hours, and all meetings are encrypted and password-protected, the company said. Based on USD 15 per month charge for meetings of more than 40 minutes on Zoom (USD 180 on annual basis), JioMeet is providing the same functionality and more free of cost, translating into Rs 13,500 savings for a host per year, company sources said. According to app features listed on Google Play Store, JioMeet offers easy sign up with either mobile number or e-mail ID and allows creation of instant meeting. The meeting in HD audio and video quality can be scheduled in advance and details shared with invitees, it said, adding JioMeet allows unlimited meetings per day with each meeting going uninterrupted for up to 24 hours. Each meeting is password protected and the host can enable 'Waiting Room' to ensure no participant joins without permission. It also allows creation of groups and starting calling/chatting on a single click. Other features include 'Safe Driving Mode' while driving, multi-device login support for up to five devices and seamless switching from one device to other while on call. The app, which has already seen more than 5 lakh downloads on the Google Play Store and iOS, comes amid the government imposing a ban on 59 popular Chinese apps including TikTok on grounds that they threatened national security and data privacy. The app was launched a day before Reliance announced fund raising from stake sale in Jio Platforms which has now totalled Rs 1.17 lakh crore from 11 investors, ranging from Facebook to Intel Capital. Company sources said no restriction on time limit on JioMeet means teachers will not be required to cut short their classes as they are forced to do on Zoom. Also, the app allows national and international seminars as well as hosting of cultural and social events. Unlike Zoom where users cannot expand a participant's video, JioMeet meetings users can expand any participant's video or shared screen's video by a double tap. Also, JioMeet has two advanced meeting settings over and above Zoom options. First, it allows participants only from the host's organisation. If enabled, only users from the host's organsation can join that meeting, eliminating potential snoops from other IDs. Secondly, it does not allow guest users -- if enabled, every user will be required to sign up before joining the meeting hence restricting anonymous users from joining the call. Unlike Zoom, JioMeet users can switch from one device to another without dropping out of the call. Zoom allows sign up only with e-mail ID while JioMeet allows sign up with e-mail and mobile number. Inside the call, Zoom shows four participants at a time on a single mobile screen (for others, users need to scroll through multiple pages). However, if you are using Google Meet on your phone, you will be signed in automatically. If you want to host a meeting, you will be required to sign in on all three platforms. Number of participants JioMeet, Google Meet and Zoom allow users to start a video conference with up to 100 participants. This can be further increased up to 250 on Google Meet and 1,000 on Zoom using the company’s paid plans. Paid plans While Google Meet and Zoom offer paid services for enterprise users, JioMeet has not revealed its paid plans yet. What is the video quality offered for calls? The three platforms allow users to start video calls in HD (720p) resolution. What are the controls offered to hosts? JioMeet, Google Meet and Zoom allow the host to control the microphone and camera of all participants. The host can also change a participant’s name or remove them from the call. Is end-to-end encryption offered? While JioMeet and Google Meet offer encryption for video calls, it is not end-to-end encryption. Zoom on the other hand offers end-to-end encryption for both free and paid users. This move by <keyword id="10926" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Reliance">Reliance</keyword> would once again hit the rival telcos hard, who are yet to recover from the shock of <keyword id="2003276" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jio">Jio</keyword>’s free data and voice calling offers that were launched in September last year. The launch could coincide with <keyword id="6355199" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Reliance-Industries">Reliance Industries</keyword>' annual general meeting on July 21. It would probably follow Jio's new tariff plan with aggressive price-points that is expected to happen in a couple of days, now that the Dhan Dhana Dhan offer is about to close. Rajiv Sharma, HSBC director and telecoms analyst, said in a note that the price of Jio’s 4G feature phone could be "at a paltry Rs 500 (sub-$8) to lure 2G subscribers to directly switch to 4G, "which implies "Jio subsidising each handset by as much as $10-15 (Rs 650-975)." "This launch can create the next wave of disruption in the telecom market," a top executive of one of the leading telcos told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/company/corporate-trends/reliance-jio-may-disrupt-the-market-again-with-rs-500-handset/articleshow/59448452.cms">ET</a>. He also pointed out that the investment cycle for Jio is now complete and going forward, the company only needs marginal investments in terms of access in order to grow its capacity in order to meet demand. Ambani even asserted that Jio is 5G ready today. Making Indian businesses global Jio is partnering with Microsoft to bring the Azure platform to Jio data centers across the country. Using Microsoft’s Azure AI, Jio will be able to develop India specific solutions like speech recognition and natural language understanding for Indian languages and dialects. Instead of trying to win over the big conglomerates, the partnership will cater to small and medium businesses instead and help them accelerate their digital transformation. To support that mission, the service will be free for Indian technology startups and small businesses can avail it at a nominal price of ₹1,500, which is one-tenth of its official cost. Launching its own Internet of Things With a revenue opportunity of ₹20,000 crore, Reliance Jio is planning to set up its own Internet of Things. With 2 billion devices expected to go digital over the next two years in India, Jio wants to be the connectivity provider for at least half of them. Jio’s pan India Narrowband Internet of THings (NBIoT) will launch on 1 January 2020 residential, industrial and public devices. Blocking chain and keeping Indian data in India Over the next twelve months, Jio plans to install one of the largest blockchain networks in the world that will include throughs on nodes that be operation when the services takes off. With EDGE, India and its 1,600 cities will be among the first in the world for Indian residents to experience AR, VR and MR on Jio Fiber, according to Ambani. Taking Jio Fiber Live Reliance Jio has been testing its optical fiber broadband network since August last year. Spanning over 1,600 towns, the service generated over 15 million registrations and trials are already underway in 500,000 homes. And now, it’s going to launch commercially on 5 September 2019 across India on Jio’s three year anniversary with the aim of reaching 20 million households and 15 million businesses. The welcome offer for Jio Fiber includes an HD 4K television set as well as an HD 4K set top box that supports gaming. The aim is to launch the company’s first multi-player gaming platform at zero latency. Jio also demoed its new mixed reality (MR) headset, which is a combination of augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), that its building with the help of one of the startups under its umbrella. OTT services and new movies at home A subscription to Jio Fiber is also going to come bundled with subscriptions to most of the leading premium OTT applications. Ambani said the aim is to make the subscription model more convenient for users so that they don’t have to pay and sign up for multiple services separately — they just get them all through Jio. Users also won’t have to go to the cinema to watch movies anymore. With Jio’s ‘First Day First Show’ feature, Jio Premium members can watch movies on their Jio Fiber connections on the same day that those films hit the theaters. This service won’t be available immediately but Ambani stated that it should be live by mid-2020. Back to basics Aside from the bells and whistles, Jio Fiber isn’t skimping on the basics of a broadband connection. The lowest of its plans will start at speeds of 100Mbps and go all the way up to 1Gbps. And, like Jio undercut its competition’s prices when its 4G network went live, its broadband services plans to do the same with prices starting at ₹700 per month and keeping voice calls free forever. The host of the meeting will have group host controls and individual host controls. As part of group host controls, you can control the microphones of all the in-call participants who are active. As part of individual host controls, you can control the microphone and camera of the participants. You can also rename, make a host or remove any active in-call participant. You can also ask to start video. If you wish to mute or unmute all the participants, you can tap on Participants and then select mute or unmute as required. If a participant joins the call after the host has muted all the participants, he or she will be muted by default. What is the difference between ‘Leave Meeting’ and ‘End Meeting’?
