Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited (RJIL) has written to the <keyword id="30356" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="telecom-regulatory-authority-of-india" source="Orion">Telecom Regulatory Authority of India</keyword> (TRAI) stating that the complaint is a deliberate malicious attempt by Bharti <keyword id="15491" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="airtel" source="Orion">Airtel</keyword> Limited (Airtel) to defame RJILs consumer-friendly tariffs in order to protect its narrow interests. Bharti Airtel had filed a complaint on alleged predatory offers of Live TV channels with broadband plans by RJIL. RJIL said a close reading of the complaint letter would clearly establish that Airtel's sole grouse is that JioFiber is offering reasonable tariffs to customers. "Evidently, all its unsubstantiated claims of predation, non-level playing field, and non-compliance with TTOs and NTO are just woven around this singular theme and this complaint should be dismissed simply on the ground of being a frivolous attempt to protect its own interests. Further, Airtel should be warned against making such frivolous complaints in future," RJIL said. It added that the <keyword id="16958414" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jiofiber-backup" source="Orion">JioFiber backup</keyword> tariff is an earnest attempt by RJIL to connect all consumers to fiber optics technology in order to deliver best-in-class connectivity services. JioFiber Backup plan is a 10 Mbps FTTX plan at a monthly rental of Rs 198 (plus taxes). This plan is available only on 5 months advance rental at one go. Further, the subscribers have the option to add Add-on packs of Rs 100 or Rs 200 per month provided by Jio Platforms Limited (<keyword id="136455" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jpl" source="Orion">JPL</keyword>) in order to get access to up to 14 OTT apps along with Jio's OTT apps provided by JPL. Thus, it is evident that RJIL's product offering is limited to connectivity services and it does not include subscriptions to OTT applications or any broadcasting services, the company said in its response to TRAI. RJIL said this is a confusing attempt to deprive the JioFiber customers of an affordable offering that also provides an OTT app subscription at a reasonable price. "Evidently, as Airtel does not have sufficient grounds, it is desperately trying to mix different regulations to make an invalid point. In view of this, we reiterate that Airtel's complaint should be summarily dismissed," RJIL said. Telecom companies' shares on Wednesday zoomed as much as 11 per cent buoyed by the proposal before regulator Trai regarding fixing a minimum price for mobile internet tariff.
 Vodafone Idea shares spurted 11.21 per cent to trade at Rs 7.84 apiece in early deals on the BSE. On the NSE, the stock soared 11.35 per cent to Rs 7.85 per unit. 
 <keyword id="6354287" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="bharti-airtel">Bharti Airtel</keyword> also saw its shares rising though marginally at 0.23 per cent to trade at Rs 460 a unit on the BSE. The telco's shares on the NSE were trading at Rs 459.35 apiece, up 0.05 per cent.
 Shares of <keyword id="6355199" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-industries">Reliance Industries</keyword>, the parent firm of unlisted RJio Infocomm, lost 0.92 per cent to Rs 1,564.35 on the BSE. On the NSE, its scrip went down 0.94 per cent to Rs 1,564.10.
 Telecom operators have proposed sector regulator Trai to fix a minimum price for mobile internet as no company on its own is in a position to decide on it due to fierce competition in the market, industry body COAI said on Tuesday.
 "All the current telecom service providers in the private sector, namely Bharti Airtel Limited, Reliance <keyword id="2003276" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jio">Jio</keyword> and Vodafone Idea limited are in complete agreement that Trai be requested to regulate tariffs by setting floor price for data services," COAI Director General Rajan S Mathews said in the letter dated December 3, 2019. However, private telecom operators want call rates to continue to remain unregulated.

The stress of investments and the lack of revenues due to deep discounting is hurting the entire industry, including Jio. The total debt of the top three telecom players — Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea — is a massive ₹3.9 lakh crore, according to the report. That’s almost <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/sensex-today-jumps-150-points-after-rbi-move-to-transfer-surplus/articleshow/70852202.cms">twice the amount the </a>Reserve Bank of India gave the Indian government, which is ₹1.76 lakh crore this week. The debt run up by the three war ravaged players is also almost half of the country’s total fiscal deficit which is<a href="https://www.livemint.com/news/india/fiscal-deficit-crosses-61-of-budgeted-target-in-first-three-months-of-fy20-1564574137744.html"> pegged at around</a> ₹7 lakh crore for 2019-20. Fiscal deficit is the amount of money the government is falling short of, to carry on its planned expenditure. RJio’s market share will go up 40% to 45% It doesn’t look like the debt is going away anytime soon. Jio’s predatory data tariffs are still 25 to 30% lower than that of Airtel and Vodafone Idea. India Ratings expects RJio’s market share to increase 40% to 45% over the next two years. At the end of the last financial year, it stood at around 30%. “Airtel and Vodafone’s joint market share is expected to drop 25% to 27% each,” the report predicted. Jio’s already declared that it’s targeting 50% market share in total telecom revenues, without mentioning a timeline. At his annual general meeting, Ambani promised Reliance Industries’ shareholders of Jio’s growth. The company already has around 340 million customers but is aiming for more. “The potential for growth is immense, and half a billion customers is now well within our reach,” Ambani said. No free cash flow available till 2021-22 As a result of high debt and continuous losses, the telecom players will remain structurally weak for the next two years, says the report. This means they will have no or low free cash in hand. “These companies will continue to rely on refinancing or capital infusion. However, near-term liquidity is supported by large cash levels available post capital infusions (Vodafone Idea, Airtel) and continued financial flexibility due to strong parentage (Jio),” the report said. From here on, there are a few things that can change the fortunes of the flailing telecom sector starting with Jio’s pricing strategy. Any change and possible increase in tariffs and subsequent response by other two players, will pave the way for recovery in the telecom sector. Top three telecom companies’ debt is at ₹3.9 lakh crore — that’s half of India’s fiscal deficit

Bharti <keyword id="15491" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Airtel">Airtel</keyword> has been on a debt-fuelled buying spree in recent years in order to maintain its market share in India. After being pushed into a corner by new entrant <keyword id="6354504" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="reliance-jio">Reliance Jio</keyword>, Airtel, which is India’s largest <keyword id="6354776" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Telecom">telecom</keyword> operator by subscribers, has issued debt to buy spectrum, refinancing existing debt obligations and support a significant cut in data and calling prices so as to lure additional subscribers. Consequently, it’s net debt has ballooned to <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Industry/bfDePnErStJg7DVJ6SKIfI/Airtel-said-to-plan-Africa-unit-IPO-in-46-billion-debt-cut.html">$14.6 billion</a>. As most price wars go, Airtel has no choice but to match Reliance Jio’s prices and heavy spending. The <keyword id="138013" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sunil-Bharti">Sunil Bharti</keyword> Mittal-led firm hiked its capital expenditure plans by 25% in the recently-concluded fiscal year to <a href="https://www.livemint.com/Industry/2We3x084sh5ER83bYbxp7I/Airtel-to-invest-Rs25000-crore-in-201718-to-boost-4G-netwo.html">₹250bn</a> to expand its 4G and broadband network. It will spend <a href="https://www.financialexpress.com/industry/bharti-airtel-to-spend-rs-25000-cr-on-capex-in-fy19/1022661/">a similar amount </a>this year as well. The spending has affected Airtel’s bottom line. It recently reported <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/earnings/airtel-consolidated-4q-profit-falls-78/articleshow/63898251.cms">the first quarterly loss</a> from its Indian operations in 15 years, following eight consecutive quarters of profit drops. Going forward, Airtel will need to maintain its solvency and cut down it’s debt. This is why it’s planning two important transactions, both of which could reduce its total debt by $4.6 billion by 2021. First, it is looking to raise $1.5 billion by selling a 25% stake in its profitable <keyword id="12925" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="20" keywordseo="Africa">Africa</keyword> unit via an initial public offering (IPO) in London or South Africa early next year. Second, it will sell a part of its stake in the tower company formed from the merger of Bharti Infratel Ltd, its tower infrastructure subsidiary, and Indus Towers Ltd. The two companies <a href="http://www.thehindu.com/business/bharti-infratel-merges-with-indus-towers-makes-it-worlds-largest-towers-company/article23666952.ece">agreed to merge</a> at the end of April in a deal that will create one of the world’s largest telecom tower operators. Airtel will own a 37.2% stake - valued at over $5 billion - in the merged entity. The deals, and the subsequent debt reduction, will help Airtel prevent a downgrade in its investment ratings. The lower the firm’s rating, the more expensive it becomes for it to borrow money or issue debt. In essence, it needs to reduce debt now in order to make its future debt cheaper to service. And why does Airtel’s debt reduction plan matter to consumers? The only reason subscribers have been able to benefit from low mobile subscription prices is because of the intense competition in the telecom sector. Airtel, Vodafone-Idea and Reliance Jio are all trying to undercut each other. However, if either of Reliance Jio’s competitors were to fall out of the race due to insolvency or unprofitability, it would give the disruptor greater control of the industry and subsequently, the power to increase prices. Airtel is by far the best competitor Jio has in the country.
