<p>Sherman, who grew up with Jackson in Compton, argues that it's unfair to judge Jackson based on his associations.</p>
<p>He points to Riley Cooper and Colts owner Jim Irsay as examples of people that got the benefit of a doubt from the NFL world (and were lightly disciplined) despite off-the-field issues more serious than Jackson's.</p>
<p>Sherman says there's a racial double-standard in the NFL:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Commit certain crimes in this league and be a certain color, and you get help, not scorn. Look at the way many in the media wrote about Jim Irsay after his DUI arrest. Nobody suggested the Colts owner had 'ties' to drug trafficking, even though he was caught driving with controlled substances (prescription pills) and $29,000 in cash to do who-knows-what with. Instead, poor millionaire Mr. Irsay needs help, some wrote."</p>
<p>Jackson wasn't accused of any crimes in <a href="http://www.nj.com/eagles/index.ssf/2014/03/eagles_desean_jackson_off-the-field_troubles.html">the NJ.com article that brought up his alleged association with gang members</a>. He was accused of taking an Instagram picture with a gang member.</p>
<p>Forty minutes after the article was published, the Eagles cut him.</p>
<p>Sherman goes on to explain why pro athletes can't cut all ties with the people they grew up with after they get rich:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"In desperate times for people who come from desperate communities, your friends become your family. I wouldn't expect DeSean to 'distance himself' from anybody, as so many people suggest pro athletes ought to do despite having no understanding of what that means. Going to college and playing in the NFL creates a natural distance, but we can't push people away just because they're not as successful as us. I can't change who I grew up with, but what I can do is try to educate them on the right way of doing things, help them when they need it, and try to keep them out of trouble."</p>
<p>Philly's reasons for cutting Jackson extend beyond the NJ.com gang story.</p>
<p>But Sherman's column is still an useful bit of perspective on how NFL players see this situation.</p>

Owner Of Indianapolis Colts Charged With Possession Of Illicit Substance

The Indy Star <a href="http://www.indystar.com/story/sports/nfl/colts/2015/10/25/colts-top-players-reason-3-4-start/74489600/">first reported the incident.</a></p><p>With the loss, the preseason favorites to win the AFC dropped to 3-4. Despite their record, the Colts are still comfortably in first place in the AFC South. The Houston Texans are currently in second place, at 2-5.</p><p>Still, through the first seven games of the NFL season, the Colts have been the most underwhelming team in the league. It starts with quarterback Andrew Luck, who many expected to make a leap into MVP conversation, but the blame can be spread far and wide around the Indianapolis locker room. </p><p>As the Indy Star's Zak Keefer notes, the team's season can be summed up by left tackle Anthony Castonzo's words following the loss on Sunday: <span>"The bottom line is that just wasn't good enough. Not even close."</span></p><p>Castonzo, who signed a $42 million contract in the off-season, has been a disaster thus far. He leads the NFL with five holding penalties, and he's also racked up 3 false starts and innumerable mistakes in play. </p><p>Luck, too, has been mediocre at best. He's thrown 9 interceptions, which puts him not in MVP conversation but tied with Matt Stafford and behind only Sam Bradford and Peyton Manning, both of whom have thrown 10. Crazy as it sounds, the Colts are 1-4 with Luck as a starter, and he's only thrown 2 first-half touchdowns, forcing the team to play catch-up in the second half.</p><p>Trent Colt, the 33-year-old pass-rushing linebacker who signed a $16 million contract in the off-season, has just one sack. Todd Herremans, a 33-year-old left guard who was signed during the off-season to sure up the line, was benched after two games and watched on Sunday in street clothes. Andre Johnson, 34-years-old and due $21 million, has been nearly invisible thus far, save for one breakout game against the lowly Texans. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55f997eb9dd7cc10008babb1-5184-3456/gettyimages-488075072.jpg" alt="Andrew Luck" data-mce-source="Brett Carlsen/Getty Images" /><p class="source"><span>Brett Carlsen/Getty Images</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>It's no wonder, then, that Irsay and Grigson reportedly got into such a heated conversation. Grigson spent a lot of money in the off-season on players in their 30s, and the age has proved costly. But the rookies haven't been much better. The team's first round pick, wide receiver Phillip Dorsett, has caught just 10 passes and is expected to miss the next month with an ankle injury.</p><p>All around, this team is a mess. </p><p>And yet, there's still plenty to be optimistic about. Namely, the weak division means this team will almost certainly make the playoffs. They simply play too many games against horrible teams not to. But things could get way worse way before they get any better. The team's next two games come against the 6-0 Panthers and the 6-0 Broncos. If they can figure out a way to end even one of these perfect seasons, it could turn their entire season around. Or, they could fall to 3-6, at which point Pagano might find himself without a job. Saints head coach Sean Payton has already been linked to the Colts this off-season, but that doesn't mean that Pagano is guaranteed a job through the regular season.</p><p>As the cliche goes, only time will tell with the Colts. <p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5735f76091058423008c2a6b-1371-1029/andrew luck.jpg" alt="andrew luck" data-mce-source="Andy Lyons/Getty" /><p class="source"><span>Andy Lyons/Getty</span></p><p class="caption">Andrew Luck's contract extension will give him reasons to smile.</p></div><p></p></div></div>In what was supposed to be the season he took over the NFL, Andrew Luck instead slogged through an injury-riddled and disappointing 2015.</p><p>It's easy to forget that when healthy, Luck has been one of the bright young stars of the NFL, and one of the select few quarterbacks who seems like a true franchise quarterback.</p><p><a href="http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/15508928/bill-barnwell-2016-offseason-report-cards-houston-texans-indianapolis-colts-jacksonville-jaguars-tennessee-titans">According to ESPN's Bill Barnwell</a>, with Luck coming up on a contract extension, the Indianapolis Colts may end up paying Luck like <em>the</em> NFL's franchise quarterback, with a contract unlike anything the NFL has seen.</p><p>In March 2016, <a href="http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/15082094/just-how-much-indianapolis-colts-qb-andrew-luck-going-get-paid-nfl">Barnwell estimated</a> that Luck might look to get a deal worth $66-70 million in the first three years - a deal similar, but still higher, than what Cam Newton received.</p><p>Now, in May, in evaluating the Colts' offseason, Barnwell said league executives have since told him that the aforementioned number is too low (emphasis ours).</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Since I wrote about the parameters for a Luck contract earlier this year, I've heard from multiple NFL executives who have suggested my estimates are too low. The baseline for a Luck extension might very well be the cost of guaranteeing three consecutive franchise tags. Going with a simple estimated exclusive franchise tag cost of $25 million in 2016, that would mean the Colts would be in for $30 million in 2017 and a whopping $43.2 million in 2018, <strong>suggesting that locking up Luck would cost the Colts $98.2 million in guaranteed money</strong>. That will be a fun negotiation.</p><p>$98 million is a massive number for any contract, but in guaranteed money, it's virtually unheard of.</p><p><a href="http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/rankings/guaranteed/">According to Spotrac</a>, no other quarterback in the NFL has a guarantee worth more than $70 million. Eli Manning and Philip Rivers top the list with $65 million guaranteed each. It sounds like Andrew Luck is going to get a contract unlike anything the NFL has ever seen

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/56017fd7bd86ef1e008bc24d-1200-900/chuck pagano.jpg" alt="chuck pagano" data-mce-source="Michael Hickey/Getty" /><p class="source"><span>Michael Hickey/Getty</span></p><p class="caption">Chuck Pagano may have made his seat a little bit hotter.</p></div><p></p></div></div>After an alarming 20-7 loss to the New York Jets, Indianapolis Colts coach Chuck Pagano went off in his post-game press conference.</p><p>Pagano was especially hard on Andrew Luck, chiding Luck's three interceptions and fumble and stressing the need to protect the ball.</p><p>However, in his criticism of Luck, Pagano seemed to take a shot at GM Ryan Grigson.</p><p>When asked if Luck is rushing because the offensive line isn't giving him enough protection, <a href="http://www.stampedeblue.com/2015/9/22/9370599/chuck-pagano-takes-shot-at-ryan-grigson-during-post-game-criticism-of-andrew-luck">Pagano told reporters</a>:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"You know what, I'd have to sit down, honestly, and have a conversation. I don't think so. That's been the case for three years now. Has it not? He should be more than comfortable dealing with what he's dealing with. We've got to get it fixed."</p><p>While on the surface that's a criticism of Luck adapting to a situation, it's a veiled criticism of the job Grigson has done as GM: 'Luck's never had enough protection, so he should be used to it by now,' basically.</p><p>Pagano is right to a point. <a href="https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2015/09/22/nyj-ind-grades-luck-ties-worst-grade-of-career/">According to Pro Football Focus</a>, only one of the Colts offensive linemen earned a positive grade in protection, while free agent addition Todd Herremans struggled mightily against a good Jets defensive line, earning a horrid -10.9 grade.</p><p>Pagano's subtle shot at Grigson only adds to the speculation of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/indianapolis-colts-problems-2015-9">an internal rift in the Colts</a>. After a Week 1 loss to the Bills, <a href="http://www.wthr.com/story/29933953/kravitz-is-paganos-job-on-the-line-theres-a-very-good-chance-it-is">Bob Kravitz of WTHR Sports reported</a> that Pagano may be on the hot seat as the Grigson and Colts owner Jim Irsay are losing faith in his ability to take the Colts to the next level.</p><p>While two early losses is an easy way for all sides to overreact, the Colts may just be hitting early bumps in the road. Colts coach Chuck Pagano suggests the front office hasn't built a good enough team around Andrew Luck

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/56093e369dd7cc1f008bd750-1105-829/chuck pagano.jpg" alt="chuck pagano" data-mce-source="Andy Lyons/Getty" /><p class="source"><span>Andy Lyons/Getty</span></p><p class="caption">Chuck Pagano declined a one-year extension with the Colts.</p></div><p></p></div></div>The Indianapolis Colts came up with their first win of the season in a tighter-than-it-should-have-been 35-33 win over the Tennessee Titans.</p><p>The Colts are one of the biggest early-season disappointments in the NFL, and despite their first win. talk of the rocky relationship between Colts coach Chuck Pagano and the front office hasn't stopped.</p><p><a href="http://www.wthr.com/story/29933953/kravitz-is-paganos-job-on-the-line-theres-a-very-good-chance-it-is">Bob Kravitz of WTHR Sports reported</a> in Week 1 that Colts own Jim Irsay and GM Ryan Grigson were losing trust that Pagano could bring the team to the next level.</p><p>After a Week 2 loss, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/chuck-pagano-ryan-grigson-colts-2015-9">Pagano seemed to take a veiled shot at Grigson</a>, suggesting the Colts' offensive line isn't good enough each year and that Andrew Luck should be used to it by now. </p><p>On Sunday, <a href="http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000539306/article/chuck-pagano-has-doubts-hell-return-to-colts-in-2016">NFL Media's Ian Rapoport reported</a> that people close to Pagano say he has "doubts" he'll be back with the Colts in 2016. </p><p>Rapoport notes that Pagano somewhat did this to himself: "So often we talk about coaches on the hot seat. The reality is, Pagano put himself on the hot seat. He declined a one-year contract extension from the Colts, choosing to bet on himself and hopefully cash in at the end of the year."</p><p>Rapoport does touch on the early reports that Pagano and Grigson fight over personnel control. While that does exist, Rapoport says it's typical business in a coach-GM relationship, and it isn't the biggest problem with the Colts or Pagano.</p><p>As Kravitz initially reported, it seems the biggest issue is Pagano's ability to turn the Colts into Super Bowl contenders. Despite three improved seasons with Pagano and Luck, the Colts have gotten crushed in the playoffs each year. This year, the Colts front office wants to see them contend for a championship or at least have a better showing in the playoffs.</p><p>The Colts' early season struggles haven't helped that issue, although a team with as many new pieces as the Colts could simply be taking a little while to take shape. Despite a weak division and a likely easy road to the playoffs, any path the Colts take will have to go through Tom Brady and the Patriots, who crushed the Colts in the AFC Championship game in 2015. The two teams meet in Week 6, in what is shaping up to be the biggest game of the season for Pagano and the Colts.</p><p>Improving upon last season could be what it takes for Pagano to stay in town, but Rapoport warns, "The reality in Indianapolis is every word is being measured and examined. Report: Indianapolis Colts coach Chuck Pagano has 'doubts' he'll be back next year

<p>At around 3 a.m., an employee at Tiki Bob's bar reported 23-year-old John Boyett to police as "too intoxicated" and said he was "[cussing] at patrons of the bar and people on the sidewalk."</p>
<p>When an officer confronted the <a href="http://www.nfl.com/draft/2013/profiles/john-boyett?id=2539940">5'10" strong safety</a>, Boyett reportedly "stiff-armed" him and then ran away.</p>
<p>The chase ended after Boyett fell down, sustaining injuries to his arm and elbow.</p>
<p>Indy Star has more:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"You can't arrest me, I'm a Colts player," Boyett repeatedly told the officers, according to the report that described his behavior as "very abusive."<span class="aa"></span></p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span class="pp"></span>The report said Boyett later threatened an officer, saying "I am going to come back and break your jaw." He also made fun of an officer's hair and nose, the report said.</p>
<p>Boyett has not practiced or played with the Colts over the summer due to him being on the non-football injury list, <a href="http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/09/02/colts-safety-john-boyett-arrested/">according to NBC Sports.</a></p>
<p>He is currently being held in the Marion County Jail on charges of public intoxication, disorderly conduct, and resisting law enforcement, according to online arrest records.</p>

NFL Rookie Allegedly Tells Police 'You Can't Arrest Me, I'm A Colts Player' During Arrest 

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/56704a322340f8b8008b5c19-3000-2000/gettyimages-500267186.jpg" alt="Andrew Luck Charlie Whitehurst" data-mce-source="Justin Aller/Getty" /><p class="source"><span>Justin Aller/Getty</span></p><p class="caption">Charlie Whitehurst (left) and Andrew Luck.</p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>There is growing uncertainty in Indianapolis that quarterback Andrew Luck may not make another start in 2015 after suffering a lacerated kidney against the Denver Broncos on November 8.</p><p>For the 6-7 Colts, who are tied for first place in the AFC South with the Houston Texans, this likely means the end of their playoff aspirations, or at best, a quick exit in the playoffs.</p><p>When Luck's kidney laceration was first announced, <a href="https://twitter.com/RapSheet/status/673514246316142592">Ian Rapoport reported</a> that Colts' owner Jim Irsay told him personally that Luck would play during Week 15 against the Texans. With that game fast approaching, Luck's status remains unclear.</p><p>On Monday, <a href="http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/14366469/indianapolis-colts-uncertain-whether-andrew-luck-plays-again-2015">ESPN's Adam Schefter reported</a> that many others in the Colts camp don't know if Luck will make his return this season, much less this weekend against Houston.</p><p>Another worry is that the kidney laceration is a much more delicate injury, making the timetable much less clear than, say, a broken bone. From Schefter:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">The Colts are handling Luck as carefully and cautiously as possible, and with good reason. Doctors know that Luck cannot risk elevating his heart rate because it would pump more blood through his kidneys, delaying the healing process, according to medical sources.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Luck has been getting regular kidney scans, as often as every fourth day, according to sources.</p><p>This suggests that even if Luck is somehow cleared to practice, he'll likely be out of shape because he hasn't been able to elevate his heart rate while sidelined. In short, it's not looking good for Indianapolis.</p><p>Luck is remaining optimistic, though.</p><p>"From what I understand, with an internal organ, you have two kidneys (and) you can't play with one that's bummed," he said, <a href="http://www.indystar.com/story/sports/nfl/colts/2015/12/14/andrew-luck-play-again-season/77306954/">via the Indy Star.</a></p><p>On Monday he said he wants to return before the end of the season and believes it will happen. He also recognized the importance of practice when coming back from an injury like this.</p><p><a href="http://www.indystar.com/story/sports/nfl/colts/2015/12/14/andrew-luck-play-again-season/77306954/">From the Indy Star:</a></p><p style="padding-left: 30px;"><span>"The hope is that you can start practicing before (being cleared to play) so that when you are clear, you can hit the ground running," Luck said. "I am such a big believer in practice and always will be. You can't just show up after (being out) however many weeks and practice for a week, go out and expect to be where you want to be. So it'll be a little bit of a learning curve again, but I don't imagine it to be too big of an issue."</span></p><p>Luck has played only seven games this season, and Matt Hasselbeck, the 40-year-old backup who has filled in for Luck, is also battling a rib injury he sustained against the Jaguars last weekend. This means career backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst could possibly start Sunday's game, which is a virtual must-win for the Colts. </p><p>Fortunately for Indianapolis, Houston has an equally problematic quarterback situation, and will likely start T.J. Mike Pence (R) touched off a national firestorm last week when he signed the new bill, which aims to protect religious Hoosiers from being forced to act against their beliefs. </p><p>But everyone from celebrities to local sports officials to business titans have very vocally disagreed.</p><p>Singer Miley Cyrus called Pence <a href="http://www.mediaite.com/online/miley-cyrus-calls-indiana-governor-%E2%80%98asshole%E2%80%99-over-religious-freedom-bill/">an "asshole."</a> Actor Ashton Kutcher noted his <a href="https://twitter.com/aplusk/status/581254396719316993">"#OUTRAGE."</a> And the rock group Wilco wrote on Twitter that it <a href="https://twitter.com/Wilco/status/582641088869109760">canceled an upcoming concert</a> in Indianapolis because the legislation "feels like thinly disguised legal discrimination." </p><p>"Hope to get back to the Hoosier State someday soon, when this odious measure is repealed," Wilco <a href="https://twitter.com/Wilco/status/582641201041543169">added</a>.</p><p>They were far from alone. NCAA, the Indiana-based college sports organization, <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/27/sports/ncaabasketball/controversial-indiana-law-puts-pressure-on-ncaa-and-other-leagues.html">said it was</a> "especially concerned about how this legislation could affect our student-athletes and employees." Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay declared his<a href="https://twitter.com/JimIrsay/status/582622346172841985"> support for inclusiveness</a> on Twitter. Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton also <a href="https://twitter.com/HillaryClinton/status/581267449523343360">tweeted a harsh criticism</a>.</p><p>Even Twitter itself weighed in. </p><p>"We're disappointed to see state bills that enshrine discrimination. These bills are unjust and bad for business. We support #EqualityForAll," the company's public policy team <a href="https://twitter.com/policy/status/582620533562454016">tweeted</a>.</p><p>A number of government entities declared they would boycott Indiana as long as it maintains the law. Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy (D) issued an executive order banning state-funded trips to the state, as did Portland, Oregon, Mayor Charlie Hales (D). </p><p>Perhaps the fiercest condemnation, however, came from the business community. Apple CEO Tim Cook <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-ceo-pro-discrimination-religious-freedom--laws-are-dangerous-2015-3">penned an op-ed on Monday</a> attacking the law as part of a "dangerous" new homophobic movement. Salesforce.com <a href="https://twitter.com/Benioff/status/581108959337136129">canceled its programs in the state</a>. A Paypal founder urged his company <a href="http://www.cnbc.com/id/102545917">to reconsider its work in Indiana</a>. The CEO of Yelp also threatened to punish the state's finances.</p><p>"[I]t is unconscionable to imagine that Yelp would create, maintain, or expand a significant business presence in any state that encouraged discrimination by businesses against our employees, or consumers at large," Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman <a href="http://officialblog.yelp.com/2015/03/an-open-letter-to-states-considering-imposing-discrimination-laws.html">wrote in an open letter</a>. "I encourage states that are considering passing laws like the one rejected by Arizona or adopted by Indiana to reconsider and abandon these discriminatory actions.
