Jharkhand has 14 seats to contribute to forming the government in the center. The EC has announced that the state will see elections in four phases with the dates of polling for different constituencies of the state scheduled on April 29, May 6, May 12 and May 19, during the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections. All the parties are vigorously working in the state to grab as many seats as possible. Lok Sabha Election 2019: Polling date For Jharkhand

With the tenure of the present Vidhan Sabha ending on 5 January 2020, the Election Commission has announced the assembly elections to select the next government for Jharkhand that will occupy the state’s throne. The polling in the state will be conducted in 5 phases starting from 30 November 2019 and so the election scene is becoming hot with all the major parties trying their luck to grab as many seats as possible. The major parties in the state of Jharkhand that can influence the election results include BJP, AJSU, JVM, JMM, and INC. BJP BJP faced the 2014 assembly elections in the state in alliance with AJSU (All Jharkhand Students’ Union). Out of the total number of 81 assembly seats, BJP got 37 seats and its ally AJSU contributed its 5 seats. Hence, BJP could form a coalition government in the state with 42 MLAs whereas the total number required for a majority government is 41. Raghubar Das of BJP is the present Chief Minister for Jharkhand. Shri Laxman Gilua is the party leader for the BJP in Jharkhand. AJSU AJSU has hinted that it will not go for ties with BJP this time when the party is now confronting the 2019 assembly elections. Sudesh Kumar Mahto is the party’s Jharkhand state president. Addressing the press people recently, AJSU chief spokesman Deosharan Bhagat said, "Our intention is very clear that a strong government should be formed in Jharkhand and issues relating to Jharkhand should be solved strongly." The party has strongly hinted about facing the elections independently so that they can focus on winning as many seats as possible. In 2014 election, the party won only 5 seats which were contributed to form the coalition government in the state with the BJP. JVM Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) or Jharkhand Development Front (Democratic) was started in 2006 by Babulal Marandi who was formerly a Union Minister and the Jharkhand Chief Minister. He left the BJP on charges that the party had sidelined him and failed to recognize him and hence started JVM. The party president has announced that JVM will face the upcoming assembly elections alone and hence will nominate its candidates to contest from all the 81 seats. In the 2014 assembly elections, the party had won only 2 seats. INC, JMM and RJD INC is facing the 2019 general elections for the Vidhan Sabha in Jharkhand in alliance with Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and Lalu Prasad Yadav's Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). After providing the details about the pre-poll alliance, the party’s Jharkhand state in-charge RPN Singh has announced that the former Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren will be the chief minister candidate for the alliance. As per the alliance terms, the Congress will contest in 31 out of 81 seats. RJD will contest from 7 seats and JMM will nominate its candidates from 43 seats. In 2014 elections for the Jharkhand Vidhan Sabha, INC got 6 seats, JMM got 19 seats and RJD did not get any seats.

Vinod Pandey, the General Secretary of the JMM has announced that the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha leader and the former chief minister will contest the Lok Sabha elections from Dumka. The party has also said the sitting MP Vijay Hansdak will face the elections once again from his winning constituency Rajmahal. These two candidates won from these seats during 2014 elections. The party is fielding Champai Soren from Jamshedpur Lok Sabha seat. Champai Soren is the veteran tribal leader and also Seraikela legislator. From Giridih Lok Sabha seat, Jagannath Mahto will face the elections. Lok Sabha Elections 2019: JMM Candidate list for Jharkhand

The high-voltage election campaigns, which saw political leaders trying to score brownie points against each other, finally came to an end, the voting was done and we are now waiting for the results with bated breath. Of course, all of us are familiar with the lotus symbol and the hand – the first represents the Bharatiya Janata Party (<keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword>) and the second is the symbol of the Indian National <keyword id="1575" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Congress">Congress</keyword>. While the lotus signifies knowledge (as lotus is associated with Saraswati, the goddess of learning), the hand has raised too many slogans such as Congress ka hath, aam aadmi ke sath. 
 
On the other hand, there are loads of political parties out there with funny names and humorous symbols, but not too many of us know much about them. So let us have a look at them this time around and enjoy politics the funny side up. 
 Last year, the Aam Aadmi Party was allotted the broom as its symbol and according to the party, “it suits the purpose for which they have entered politics – cleaning the filth, which has permeated into the government and the legislature.” Party leader <keyword id="6354681" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Manish-Sisodia">Manish Sisodia</keyword> said, “There were 10 options that we had given, including a candle, a water tap and a gas cylinder, among others. But the broom was always our first choice.” 
 
Since then, broom has been the ubiquitous prop at every party rally or demonstration, and has given rise to slogans like lagegi jhaadu udegi dhool, na rahega panja na rahega phool, jhaadu chalao beiman bhagao and maaro mohariya taan ke, jhaadu ke nishaan pe. However, the real ‘áam’ party is Tamil Nadu-based Pattali Makkal Katchi, whose election symbol is mango. 
 
In Bihar, Rashtriya Janata Dal, a party led by one of the most humorous politicians, Lalu Prasad, has the lantern as its symbol, depicting the pitiable power situation in the rural areas. On the other hand, Mizoram People’s Conference has a more progressive symbol – it has opted for the electric bulb. 
 
Shibu Soren’s Jharkhand Mukti Morcha’s symbol is bow-and-arrow while in neighbouring Bihar, the arrow (without the bow) is the symbol of JD (U). We do fervently hope that these parties do not intend to take us back into history when these weapons were very much in use. Interestingly, comb is the symbol of Babulal Marandi’s Jharkhand Vikas Morcha. One wonders what this symbol signifies, but it might end up alienating bald voters as comb is an object of envy for them. 
 
But things are even more incongruous at times. For instance, all political parties try to project themselves as pro-poor, but the Lok Janshakti Party is happy to have a bungalow as the party’s symbol. In the South, DMK’s symbol is the Sun. Perhaps that is the reason why its chief M Karunanidhi is always seen with the sunglasses on! 
 Some other interesting election symbols include batsman (Gondwana Mukti Sena), spectacles (Indian National Lok Dal), inkpot and pen (J&amp;K People’s Democratic Party), drum (United Democratic Party), conch (Biju Janata Dal) and hand pump (<keyword id="6388951" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rashtriya-Lok-Dal">Rashtriya Lok Dal</keyword>). However, the Uttarakhand Kranti Dal has the ultimate symbol – it is a chair, the primary objective for which all parties have been formed and for which they fight elections. 
 Apart from symbols, there are parties with amusing names like Gareeb Aadmi Party (a breakaway from the Aam Aadmi Party), Hum Sabki Party, <keyword id="979444" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aam-Janata-Party">Aam Janata Party</keyword>, <keyword id="2241833" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Aapka-Hamara-Party">Aapka Hamara Party</keyword>, Aazadi Ka Antim Aandolan Dal, Akahand Bharat Maha Sangh Sarvahara Krantikari Party, Akhil Bharatiya Bhrastachar Nirmoolan Sena, Akhil Bharatiya Desh Bhakt Morcha, Akhil Bharatiya Gareeb Party, Annadata Party, Bharat Ki Lok Jimmedar Party and Jagte Raho Party. 
 
But humorous symbols or names are not just limited to Indian political parties. There are quite a few political parties across the globe with bizarre policies. In Canada, the Rhinoceros Party made promises of repealing the Law of Gravity, capturing the United States and Antarctica, and disposing the country’s nuclear waste in the Senate. The party also promised to break all their promises and nominated a professional clown as its candidate. 
 In New Zealand, <keyword id="2241832" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="McGillicuddy-Serious-Party">McGillicuddy Serious Party</keyword> ((McGSP) campaigned with the slogan, “If you want to waste your vote, vote for us.”

Polls And Politics – The Funny Side Up

NEW DELHI: Looking to cement its frontrunner status, BJP faces a formidable array of rivals ranging from Congress, Samajwadi Party, BSP, Janata Dal(U) to Jharkhand Mukti Morcha as the biggest round of polling in 121 seats in 12 states takes place on Thursday. 
 
Though BJP is expected to do well in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh where it won state polls last December, it needs to prove its mettle in UP and Bihar and retrieve ground lost to Congress in the Karnataka election in 2013. 
 
A strong performance by BJP in UP, Maharashtra and Bihar, which account for 168 seats, is critical for the party to cross the 200-seat mark, crucial to powering BJP, and specifically its PM candidate Narendra Modi, to the magic halfway mark of 272. 
 
The Shiv Sena and BJP have their task cut out in western Maharashtra’s Maratha belt where the Congress-NCP control over sugar cooperatives gives them significant political clout. NCP chief Sharad Pawar’s family boroughs of Madha and Baramati will also be tested. 
 
The central stretch of Bihar going to polls is a big test for Janata Dal(U) leader Nitish Kumar as the party holds important seats like Arrah, Nalanda and Munger and must contend with the two-pronged threat of RJD-Congress and BJP-LJP. 
 
BJP needs a high strike rate to remain on course to winning more than 20 of Bihar’s 40 Lok Sabha seats, an objective integral to the party’s hopes of picking up a rich haul of seats in UP and Bihar. 
JD(U) is at risk of being squeezed out of the frame with RJD-Congress appearing a preferred option for Muslims and upper castes, as well as a chunk of middle castes gravitating towards BJP which has sought to encash Modi’s backward caste credentials. 
 
In UP, BJP is banking on a counter-mobilization that cuts across castes to help it challenge SP and check BSP. The latter may face the toughest test as it must compete with SP for the minority vote while protecting parts of its dalit base from drifting to the BJP. 
 
In the 11 seats of Odisha that include tribal ones like Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj as well as those in the coastal heartland, BJP has emerged as a surprise force but its capacity to convert support into seats will be tested by lack of organized presence. 
 
In MP, BJP holds most of the 10 seats and Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia remains the sole hope. In Bengal, Congress has been reduced to a bit player with even BJP grabbing more eyeballs. In Jharkhand, BJP has just two of the six seats up for grabs, and hopes to improve at the cost of Congress-JMM and Babulal Marandi’s JVM(P).

In the run up to the Lok Sabha elections earlier this year, there was a huge controversy when <keyword id="1275069" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sanjay-Baru">Sanjay Baru</keyword>, the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s media advisor, released a book <keyword id="2193106" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="The-Accidental-Prime-Minister">The Accidental Prime Minister</keyword>: The Making and Unmaking of Manmohan Singh. In this book, he alleged that the PM did not exercise full control over the government and was remote-controlled by the UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. 
 However, this was not a one-off case in Indian politics. There have many instances of ‘<keyword id="2443943" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Accidental-Chief-Ministers">accidental chief ministers</keyword>’ taking office in various states. The latest example is Bihar’s new <keyword id="5269" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Chief-Minister">Chief Minister</keyword> <keyword id="6385519" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jitan-Ram-Manjhi">Jitan Ram Manjhi</keyword>. Following the dismal performance of his party, the Janata Dal (United), in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, <keyword id="6358190" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Nitish-Kumar">Nitish Kumar</keyword> played the tried and tested caste card and anointed Manjhi – who belongs to the Musahar caste (the most backward caste among the Dalits) – as the state’s chief minister. Manjhi is not known for his administrative skills and is widely regarded as Nitish’s ‘puppet.’ BJP’s <keyword id="6364740" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Sushil-Kumar-Modi">Sushil Kumar Modi</keyword>, Bihar’s former deputy chief minister, even dubbed Manjhi as "<keyword id="2443948" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="dummy-chief-minister">dummy chief minister</keyword>." 
 
 
 
In Bihar itself, on July 25, 1997, the then Chief Minister Lalu Yadav was forced to quit after an arrest warrant was issued against him in connection with the <keyword id="6362256" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Fodder-scam">fodder scam</keyword> case. In order to retain hold on power, he brazenly installed his wife <keyword id="6362315" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rabri-Devi">Rabri Devi</keyword>, who was not only a political novice but was also illiterate, as chief minister of Bihar. 
 

	Rabri Devi earned the dubious distinction of being the <keyword id="2443949" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="first-illiterate-chief-minister">first illiterate chief minister</keyword> of a state. Interestingly, in the press conference following her swearing-in ceremony, Lalu asked reporters not to pose tricky questions to her as she was new to politics and a “seedhi-saadi aurat.” 
	 
	 
	 In the neighbouring state of Jharkhand, Madhu Koda, an independent MLA, was propped up as chief minister by Lalu Yadav’s Rashtriya Janata Dal, <keyword id="6362712" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Jharkhand-Mukti-Morcha">Jharkhand Mukti Morcha</keyword> and the Congress. It was Lalu’s masterstroke to keep the BJP away from power. It was also for the first time that an independent MLA was made the chief minister of a state.<o:p></o:p>
He is known only for the large-scale corruption that marked his rule. Koda allegedly took huge bribes for illegally allotting iron ore and coal mining contracts as the chief minister of the state. According to estimates, Koda and his associates accumulated Rs 4,000 crore in the mining scam. He was also arrested and he is currently out on bail. 
 In Maharashtra, <keyword id="6356262" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Prithviraj-Chavan">Prithviraj Chavan</keyword> was appointed the chief minister after Ashok Chavan had to step down from the chief minister's post after the allegations of his involvement in the Adarsh Housing Society scam. Prithviraj Chavan, who is not a significant political figure, has still not been able to have a firm grip either on the party or the government. He had no experience of the state politics of Maharashtra and was directly paratrooped as the state’s chief minister. Although he has been in politics for almost three decades, he was never a member of the state legislature. 
 <keyword id="172066" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sadanand-Gowda">Sadanand Gowda</keyword>, who is the current railway minister, was the self-proclaimed ‘accidental chief minister' as he had himself once admitted that he was an accidental CM. He said he had never thought he would become chief minister one day. Gowda said his “politics of love” was the reason behind his accomplishment.

 3. What are the key issues for the voters in the Jharkhand state election? Jharkhand has what is called the 'resource curse' globally. Across the world from Africa to Pakistan to Papua New Guinea, places that are rich in minerals and other natural resources have most of its people suffering from back-breaking poverty. Jharkhand has been no different for many decades until recently. Between 2005-06 and 2015-16, the state lifted millions of people from poverty — the multidimensional poverty reduced to 46.5% from 74.9%, according to a United Nations Report this year — but it still remains one of India's poorest states on many counts. Therefore, "Around 25% eligible voters said employment and matters related to doing business were the most important for them in this election," the C-Voter survey that spoke to nearly 9,000 voters said. The slow implementation of the Forest Rights Act (FRA), which promised to recognise the land rights of forest dwellers, has <a href="https://www.indiaspend.com/in-jharkhand-forest-rights-could-decide-votes-in-77-assembly-seats/" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">reportedly</a> led to dissatisfaction in 62 of the 81 assembly constituencies. That's 77% of the constituencies where voters are angry with the current government, an <a href="https://www.indiaspend.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/Revised-AC-State-Brief-of-Jharkhand-converted.pdf">analysis</a> by an independent research group has concluded. 4. Are people happy with the current government in Jharkhand? A broad answer will be 'No', if the C-Voter survey is to be believed. As many as 60% of the 9,000 respondents said they wanted a new Chief Minister immediately. Just as many people were unhappy with their local legislator too. However, most people still believe BJP is the best equipped to solve their problems.  So, while the Chief Minister (CM), Raghubar Das, is losing ground, his party, the BJP, is not. But the BJP has continued to back him as the CM for this election. 5. Though the BJP seems to fall short of bagging a majority in the Jharkhand assembly, the sitting Chief Minister Raghubar Das is still the most popular among all Chief Minister candidates, closely followed by rival Hemant Soren from the JMM.
