Mumbai-based Jet Airways, which India's second biggest airline by market share, is talking to cab aggregator Uber so that the two companies can club their services offered to mutual passengers. As per <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/transportation/airlines-/-aviation/domestic-airlines-sites-offering-extra-benefits-to-passengers-to-wean-them-away-from-travel-agents/articleshow/53309506.cms">ET</a> reports, if the talks go as desired,<a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Jet-Airways-posts-first-annual-profit-after-8-years/articleshow/52462018.cms"> Jet Airways </a>will be able to advance-book an Uber cab pickup and drop from and to the origin and destination airports. The customers would probably benefit by getting luxury car services at the rate of hatchbacks.<br />

Similarly, Gurgaon-based budget carrier <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Spicejet-launches-pre-paid-card-scheme-for-frequent-fliers/articleshow/51701305.cms">SpiceJet </a>is in talks with MyTaxiIndia, and is also offering special discounts for students and senior citizens when tickets are booked from its website.<br />

Domestic airlines don't want you to go to travel agents, and here's why you should listen to them

<ul class="summary-list"><li><keyword id="11151302" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="breeze-airways">Breeze Airways</keyword> is finally launching flights but not all are sold on its business model. </li><li>Analyst Henry Harteveldt is concerned about the airline's route network, high fee structure, and tech-focused model.</li><li>Breeze seeks to create demand with low-cost leisure routes to underserved cities across the US.</li></ul><p>Breeze Airways is finally making its debut on May 27 just in time for Memorial Day weekend and the start of what will likely be a busy summer season.</p><p>An initial slate of 39 routes across 16 cities will launch between May 27 and July 29, boasting fares are as low as $39. The hub-skipping routes allow passengers to fly directly to and from leisure destinations without having to change <keyword id="6367788" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="planes">planes</keyword>. </p><p>Most of the routes also don't feature direct competition, giving Breeze a leg up in drawing passengers and stimulating demand.  But not all industry experts were sold on the airline after its launch announcement last week. </p><p>Henry Harteveldt, an industry analyst and the cofounder of Atmosphere Research Group, has been "disappointed" with what he's seen so far.</p><p>Harteveldt has worked for some of the US' leading airlines, both current and former,  like American Airlines and Trans World Airlines, and also served as the marketing director for Donald Trump's startup airline, Trump Shuttle. </p><p>Here's why he's not impressed with Breeze. </p><h2>Breeze's route network opens itself up to competition</h2><div type="image" title="The Breeze Airways route map." height="846" width="1128" msid="83061640" hostid="261"></div><p>"The primary concern I have about Breeze is the airports it's serving," Harteveldt said. "The cities are all good cities, but the airports have no protection around them."</p><p>Breeze chose the cities of Tampa, Florida; Charleston, South Carolina; Norfolk, Virginia, and New Orleans as its four main bases, which all see existing service from many of the country's largest airlines. Harteveldt says that there's nothing stopping a major player like American or Southwest Airlines from matching some of Breeze's routes or lowering fares to those cities in order to compete. </p><p>"No airline is going to give up a micro point of market share to a competitor, whether it's an established airline or a startup, without a fight," Harteveldt said. </p><p>Harteveldt compared Breeze's initial route network to fellow startup Avelo Airlines, which relies on smaller alternative airports as the backbone of its route network. Hollywood Burbank Airport and Tweed-New Haven Regional Airport, for example, are Avelo's main bases and offer some protection from carriers since there's a limit to how many flights and airlines the airports can handle. </p><p>Breeze spokesperson Gareth Edmonson-Jones says that competing with the airline might be more difficult for the major players. Smaller <keyword id="204034" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Embraer">Embraer</keyword> E190 and E195 fleet of aircraft are being used initially, with no more than 118 seats on the larger model, allowing Breeze to be more competitive on routes with traditionally low demand.</p><h2>Breeze wants to be a "seriously nice" airline, but is there such thing? </h2><div type="image" title="Breeze Airways" height="1666" width="2223" msid="83061642" hostid="261"></div><p>Ultra-low-cost airlines like Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines have gained negative reputations for customer service, despite efforts to remedy, and both Breeze and Avelo have worked to promote niceness and friendliness in response.  But Harteveldt isn't convinced that an airline can be "seriously nice," as Breeze puts it. </p><p>"'Seriously nice' is a corporate attribute, but it's not a marketing position," Harteveldt said. "It's not something you can hang a brand on."</p><p>Harteveldt points to Breeze's tech-focused approach that does away with call centers and requires passengers to use a mobile application or computer to communicate with the airline. Companies like Uber and Lyft rely on device-based communications but it's never been tried before in airlines. </p><p>"A concern that I have is that the target Breeze customer may be less likely to own a smartphone, they may be less likely to own tablets, they may be less likely to use technology in their personal and work lives," Harteveldt said. "A nice airline doesn't push people to technology."</p><p>One incident involving a Breeze employee can also threaten a "nice" airline's reputation, Harteveldt says. </p><p>"Nonstop routes and low fares are way nicer than <keyword id="52392" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Flying">flying</keyword> through hubs at high fares," Edmondson-Jones said. </p><h2>A higher fee structure than competitors</h2><div type="image" title="Flying on Avelo Airlines" height="1684" width="2246" msid="83061645" hostid="261"></div><p>Another reason Harteveldt isn't sold on Breeze's seriously nice attitude is because of the airline's high fee structure. </p><p>While baggage fees are lower than most competitors at only $20 for either checked or carry-on luggage, there are caveats. It will cost $50 to pay to check a bag at the airport instead of doing so online, for example, and a separate $50 fee if a passenger has an agent add the baggage allowance through messaging services.</p><p>Printing a boarding pass will also incur a $3 fee and a $9 fee will apply if a Breeze agent assists with a change or cancellation. Seat assignments also start at $10, although families with children under 12 can choose their seats for free. </p><p>"Breeze has basically outlined a list of ways where customers are going to think they're not a very nice airline," Harteveldt said. "Charge me $3 to print a boarding pass, charge me $50 to check a bag in with an agent. What's nice about any of that?"</p><p>Rival Avelo's fee structure is more lenient, says Harteveldt, although the two don't directly compete yet. </p><h2>Rushing to start before Memorial Day</h2><div type="image" title="airport security crowds" height="2307" width="3076" msid="83061648" hostid="261"></div><p>Breeze started selling tickets for its flights just six days before the first flight was scheduled to depart. The delay was due to the airline not having its air operator's certificate, or AOC. </p><p>"The biggest concern that I had about the launch announcement is the very short window of time the airline has chosen to give itself between announcing that his flights are open for sale and its first flight," Harteveldt said. "They will give themselves very little time to build up a base of bookings."</p><p>The result may be poorer bookings than if the airline pushed back its launch since travelers are starting to book trips further and further out. Harteveldt suggested instead that the airline delay flights by a few weeks to really get the kinks out before the first passenger is welcomed onboard, as well as build a customer base. </p><p>Breeze did delay some route launches until later in the summer, which may give it more time to sell tickets. </p><h2>Flight attendants that are also college students</h2><div type="image" title="flight attendant mask" height="760" width="1013" msid="83061650" hostid="261"></div><p>Breeze's plan to use college students enrolled in online courses with Utah Valley University has drawn ire from big labor, and Harteveldt isn't a fan either. </p><p>"If you are a full-time student, you've got a lot of responsibilities and if you are a full-time flight attendant, you've got a lot of responsibilities," Harteveldt said. The program, he says, could have unintended consequences like flight attendants that expedite an in-flight service so they can have time to study. </p><p>Breeze <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/breeze-defends-college-students-cabin-crew-flight-attendants-union-safety-2021-5">defended the program in a prior statement to Insider</a>, saying it gives young people an opportunity to lower their education costs. A total of $6,000 is given in tuition reimbursement on top of a monthly $1,200 voucher, among other perks. </p><p>"If you're a fully trained flight attendant, you're a fully trained flight attendant," Edmondson-Jones said. "It's not like if you're 18 years old, you can't be a flight attendant."</p><p>Harteveldt also says that Breeze may have missed an opportunity to get great talent from the pool of flight attendants that were furloughed during the pandemic, as rival Avelo did. </p><h2>Lack of onboard consistency </h2><div type="image" title="A Breeze Airways plane." height="3456" width="4608" msid="83061651" hostid="261"></div><p>Breeze will have two types of aircraft flying its first slate of routes, the Embraer E190 and Embraer E195. Both are near identical, with the E195 slightly longer than the E190, but will feature different onboard products. </p><p>Standard legroom on the E195 will be 31 inches while the E190 will offer 29. </p><p>"The core component of a brand promise is consistency," Harteveldt said. "From the outset, Breeze is going to be confusing customers which, by the way, is not a nice thing to do."</p><p>Edmondson-Jones responded by saying that the difference in the Embraer aircraft sizes and where the aircraft's doors are placed determined the legroom. </p><p>But the lack of consistency extends outside the aircraft. Breeze will be bringing on the Airbus A220-300 later this year and will operate two distinct fleet types. </p><p>All ultra-low-cost airlines in the US stick to one fleet type, whether it be all-Boeing 737 family or all-Airbus A320 family aircraft. A single-fleet operation keeps pilot training and maintenance costs down, as well as maximizes efficiency in a pilot pool. </p><p>"Breeze is creating unnecessary complexity for itself by having a more complex fleet," Harteveldt said. </p><h2>Tech-focused but not offered onboard WiFi on its jets</h2><div type="image" title="Gogo in-flight WiFi" height="1942" width="2590" msid="83061655" hostid="261"></div><p>Neeleman touted Breeze as a "tech company that also happens to fly airplanes," but it's Embraer aircraft are noticeably low-tech. In-flight WiFi, for example, won't be offered on the aircraft.</p><p>"There are a growing number of consumers who expect WiFi to be available everywhere they go, including airplanes," Harteveldt said. "And if Breeze is hoping to attract millennial and Gen Z consumers as its customers, they're going to be disappointed that there's no WiFi onboard on the plane"</p><p>Breeze will offer streaming in-flight entertainment including television shows and a map feature. And the airline's Airbus A220-300 fleet will offer WiFi as the aircraft will be performing longer flights. </p><p>But onboard WiFi goes beyond internet browsing and can have some cost-saving benefits for an airline. Harteveldt noted that WiFi can be used for fraud protection if the airline plans to offer in-flight purchasing, and it can be used for "smart aircraft" applications where the airline can monitor the performance of an aircraft's systems in real-time. </p><h2>What Harteveldt likes about the airline</h2><div type="image" title="Breeze Airways" height="928" width="1238" msid="83061656" hostid="261"></div><p>"I like the fact that we have a new budget airline that's entering the US that will inject fresh competition that will help compete with price and is hopefully going to provide very exciting jobs for a lot of people," Harteveldt said. "More airline competition is needed in the US." </p><p>Harteveldt is also a big fan of the Airbus A220-300 aircraft that Breeze will be flying later this year. </p><p>"The A220-300, in my opinion, is one of the best narrow-body airplanes that has been introduced because of the enormous utility it offers to its airline operators," Harteveldt said, noting that the airline should've waited to start flights with the A220 over the Embraer jets. </p><p>The Airbus A220-300 will allow Breeze to fly to Hawaii, Europe, and even South America if the airline desires. </p><p>But in order to be an effective player in the airline industry, it has to survive and thrive, which Harteveldt says isn't guaranteed, even for <keyword id="4300938" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="David-Neeleman">David Neeleman</keyword>. </p><p>"Breeze absolutely will be able to attract some customers," Harteveldt said "The question is, will they be differentiated enough to attract enough customers, and will they attract enough people to be profitable?"</p>

<strong>How to handle the situation, badly starring TVF</strong><br />
<br /> According to the <keyword id="1947111" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Vishaka-guidelines">Vishaka Guidelines</keyword> which is a set of mandatory guidelines on sexual harassment in the workplace, the complaint should be handled by an <keyword id="1366726" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Internal-Complaints-Committee">Internal Complaints Committee</keyword>, which every organization that hires more than 10 employees must have. Most start-ups do not have this committee in place and if reports are to be believed then, TVF doesn’t even have a proper HR department.<br />
<br />
Ideally, if a corporate company does have an Internal Complaints Committee, the complaints should be addressed by them internally and action should be taken according to H.R. policies.<br />
<br />
This committee should be headed by a woman and at least half of the committee should be female.<br />
<br /> <keyword id="1324890" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nidhi-Bisht">Nidhi Bisht</keyword> from TVF was the only person from the company who suggested that an investigation will be conducted after more women started emerging with their horrendous experiences in the company. This suggestion hasn't be confirmed by TVF anywhere.<br />
<br />
Sexual Harassment cases are shocking but they’re definitely not new and such cases prompted the country to pass the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition, and Redressal) Act in 2013 but the implementation of the law remains lukewarm with the harshest penalty a molester may face is losing his job.<br />
<br />
According to an FICCI-EY November 2015 report, 36% of Indian companies and 25% among MNCs are not compliant with the Sexual Harassment Act, 2013 and this is the corporate reality today.<br />

The Vishaka Guidelines state that creating a sexist environment and passing lewd or sexist comments including jokes also constitute sexual harassment. Maybe the ‘cool’ start-ups need to realize that this isn’t the college canteen anymore where they sat around and ‘checked out’ girls, this is the workplace.<br />
<br />
If they’re made uncomfortable, the guidelines state that in such cases, women should be given an option to shift to other office branches or be granted to take leave up to a period of about three months.<br />
<br />
In start-ups, who are very small usually ranging from 10 to 100 employees, their decisions revolve around what their founders think is ‘fitting to the company’s culture’ which is more often than not, relaxed to the extent that sexual harassment amounts to ‘jokes’ or ‘teasing’ or as Kumar says, complimenting someone, even if all they wanted to do was work.<br />

The delayed start was a result of the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on the <keyword id="31907" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="Aviation">aviation</keyword> industry. </p><p>Breeze is the fifth airline started by Neeleman following the serial aviation entrepreneur's successful runs at Morris Air, later sold to Southwest <keyword id="44023" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="airlines">Airlines</keyword>; WestJet; JetBlue Airways; and Azul Brazilian Airlines. Each one had a focus on <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-jetblue-revolutionized-low-cost-travel-to-become-major-airline-2020-2">low fares and positive customer service while shaking up the industry</a>. </p><p>Very little has been made public about the airline but from what Neeleman has said, Breeze will have that same focus. With the US experiencing a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airline-mergers-and-acquisitions-in-the-us-since-2000-2020-3">wave of airline consolidation since the turn of the century</a>, consumers have been left with fewer options and Breeze aims to provide a convenient low-cost alternative to the major airlines currently dominating the skies.</p><p>Here's what we know so far about the airline. </p><h2>Half tech start-up, half airline</h2><div type="image" title="Breeze Airbus A220-300 Moxy" height="591" width="1181" msid="76913392" hostid="261"></div><p>Neeleman plans to ride the tech wave in the same way that Uber and Amazon have by creating intricate mobile applications that will streamline the traveling experience, he said in a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/breeze-new-airline-david-neeleman-interview-details-2020-2">February interview with Insider</a>. Most major airlines have mobile apps and self-serve kiosks but technology, in Breeze's business model, will be relied upon to keep the airline lean.</p><p>"I prefer to say we're a high-tech company that just happens to fly airplanes," Neeleman told <a href="https://www.cntraveler.com/story/jetblue-founder-david-neeleman-on-new-airline">Conde Nast Traveler</a>, referring to just how much self-serve technology will be intertwined with the airline's operations.</p><p>Neeleman also said that there will be no need to call up the airline and talk with a customer service agent as problems can be remedied via the app. </p><p>"We want something where nobody ever has to call, pick up the phone to call us, or have a hassle," Neeleman told Insider. </p><h2>Lots of do-it-yourself</h2><div type="image" title="LaGuardia Airport New Terminal" height="1674" width="2232" msid="76913393" hostid="261"></div><p>Customers flying Breeze won't likely be expected to queue up at check-in to have an agent check a bag or print a boarding pass. Most processes will be relegated to the mobile app, website, and maybe self-serve airport kiosks so that the airline doesn't have to employ a large airport staff, which will help keep costs down.</p><p>Everything from purchasing a ticket to checking in at the airport can ideally be accomplished using a device, with no need to speak to a customer service representative. Fewer than 50 employees would ideally be needed at each airport, according to Neeleman, but that there would have to be some human back-up for passengers who aren't acclimated to modern technology. </p><p>"We'll have to accommodate them, we'll figure out a way to get to those people," Neeleman said. "We'll have a lot of contract staff at the airports, and then the call center and everything would be very minimal." </p><h2>More non-stop flights between smaller cities</h2><div type="image" title="Breeze Airways" height="1562" width="2083" msid="76913397" hostid="261"></div><p>Most air routes in the US originate in or terminate in a major city that's usually a hub of the airline in what's known as the hub-and-spoke system. Travelers who live in big cities often benefit because they have access to more non-stop flights but those in smaller cities often have to connect to get to their final destination.</p><p>Breeze Airways doesn't plan to follow the hub-and-spoke route system utilized by most major airlines and will operate point-to-point routes, or routes between secondary cities, instead. This opens the door for any number of non-stop routes between cities like Sacramento, California and Bozeman, Montana or Plattsburgh, New York and St Louis, Missouri, for example. Neeleman says he can make those unusual routes work.</p><p>"We think there's a market where you can go with a smaller plane with a lower trip cost and service these cities that have been forgotten or neglected," Neeleman told <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/jetblue-azul-founder-david-neeleman-transform-air-travel-2019-4">Insider in a 2019 interview</a>. "I would be very surprised if a single [Breeze] route had nonstop service competition. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of city pairs that are crying out for nonstop flights."</p><p>Some flights will operate only on select days instead of daily service, with Neeleman currently examining 500 different city pairs for potential service. When demand doesn't require a flight, Neeleman says the <keyword id="6367788" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="planes">planes</keyword> will be available for private charter as there's a large market there from sports teams to the government. </p><h2>Modern aircraft</h2><div type="image" title="Airbus A220" height="2807" width="3742" msid="76913405" hostid="261"></div><p>The flagship of <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/history-of-the-airbus-a220-bombardier-cseries-plane-2020-2">Breeze Airways will be the Airbus A220</a>, a next-generation aircraft with no shortage of fuel-efficient and passenger-friendly features. Delta Air Lines and JetBlue Airways are currently the only airlines in the US to fly the plane with <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/air-canada-unveils-controversial-new-airbus-a220-aircraft-2020-1">Air Canada starting operations with the plane in January 2020</a>. </p><p>The A220 boasts a quiet, modern interior for passengers and low operating costs for airlines. It's configured in a unique 2-3 configuration and Neeleman plans to, once again, be generous with legroom allowances at every seat, <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/danielreed/2020/02/10/with-the-coming-launch-of-his-fifth--new-airline-david-neeleman-is-trying-a-new-sales-gimmick-being-nice-to-travelers/">Forbes</a> reported.</p><p>The first passengers to board a Breeze airliner, however, won't be stepping onboard an A220. The airline will first operate the Embraer E190/E195 as it awaits its flagship A220s, scheduled for delivery in August 2021, <a href="https://www.regulations.gov/document?D=DOT-OST-2020-0106-0001">federal records</a> show. </p><h2>Streaming in-flight entertainment and possibly free WiFi</h2><div type="image" title="Jetblue flight during coronavirus plane pretty full" height="1125" width="1500" msid="76913407" hostid="261"></div><p>Unlike JetBlue and WestJet, Breeze won't feature personal seat-back in-flight entertainment systems. Instead, travelers seeking entertainment will have the option to stream content to their personal devices, according to <a href="https://onemileatatime.com/breeze-airways/">One Mile at a Time</a>, a trend the major airlines are also following.</p><p>Seat-back entertainment systems, though they're loved by passengers, add weight to aircraft and make them more expensive to operate. Streaming systems require less onboard infrastructure and are less costly, with seat-back screens costing around $10,000 per seat to install, the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/01/business/airlines-travel-entertainment.html">New York Times</a> reported. </p><p><a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/danielreed/2020/02/10/with-the-coming-launch-of-his-fifth--new-airline-david-neeleman-is-trying-a-new-sales-gimmick-being-nice-to-travelers/">Forbes</a> reported that the new airline will have WiFi available for passengers on the Airbus A220 aircraft and that Neeleman is still debating on whether or not to make it free. JetBlue Airways, which introduced WiFi to its planes in 2013, offers the service complimentary to all passengers. </p><h2>Low-cost first class</h2><div type="image" title="Delta Elite Status Day Trip - Delta First Class seat" height="1334" width="1778" msid="76913410" hostid="261"></div><p>Breeze also plans to offer a first class product, according to <a href="https://onemileatatime.com/breeze-airways/">One Mile at a Time</a>, in an uncharacteristic move for a low-cost airline and Neeleman, whose airlines typically do not offer a premium cabin in their early years. Little is known about what the forward cabin will feature but it won't be standard across the fleet with some routes seeing recliners and others fully lie-flat seats, the <a href="https://onemileatatime.com/breeze-airways/">blog</a> reported. </p><h2>Low fares</h2><div type="image" title="wallet" height="2186" width="2915" msid="76913414" hostid="261"></div><p>All of these cost-saving measures will culminate in low fares for passengers. Neeleman hasn't speculated how low the fares will be but the mogul did state that his airline will only need 50 passengers on each flight to break even.</p><p>And Neeleman says the airline will be operating more efficiently than today's ultra-low-cost carriers, which routinely sell tickets for under $20 one-way.</p><h2>The first aircraft has already arrived</h2><div type="image" title="Breeze Airways Embraer E190" height="1875" width="2500" msid="80675971" hostid="261"></div><p>Breeze's first aircraft, an Embraer E195, was delivered in December 2020, according to trade publication <a href="https://www.ch-aviation.com/portal/news/98988-utahs-breeze-airways-adds-first-e195">CH Aviation</a>, and more have been arriving at the airline since. The latest is a 14-year-old Embraer E190, the first of a 15-aircraft lease from Nordic Aviation Capital, which arrived on February 2.</p><p>"This aircraft type is once again experiencing a resurgence as it allows airlines to continue to profitably service all of their pre-COVID markets and retain pre-COVID frequency," Jim Murphy, Nordic Aviation Capital's chief commercial officer, said in a statement. </p><p>Details about the aircraft are still unknown but it typically offers around 100 seats in a 2-2 configuration. The Brazilian airliner is a favorite of Neeleman's for his airlines and can be found flying in the fleets of his airlines including JetBlue, TAP Air Portugal, and Azul. </p><p>"The Breeze team has vast experience with the E-Jet family, and we are excited to work with them as they begin their new airline with the E190, an aircraft type ideally suited to their exciting new network," said Murphy.</p>

In total, the US aviation giant expects global demand for jets to reach 42,730 aircraft over the next two decades. The total value, a whopping $6.3 trillion. </p><p>Of those, only 60 are expected to be jumbo jets. That's right, Boeing predicts global demand for passenger aircraft comparable in size to its own iconic 747 and the Airbus A380 will be three planes a year. </p><p>According to Boeing vice president of marketing Randy Tinseth, the 747-8's market appeal in the passenger hauling business will be limited to work as an ultra-luxury private jet. </p><p>"The 747-8 Intercontinental is in our lineup, we see it mostly as a VIP opportunity," Tinseth told Business Insider at the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/farnborough-airshow-2018" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2018 Farnborough International Airshow</a>. </p><p>Since 2005, Boeing has taken just 150 orders for the 747-8, the latest incarnation of the jumbo jet. Of those, only 47 have been passengers planes. In fact, the company hasn't landed a new airline customer for the plane since Air China placed an order in 2012. Currently, Boeing has zero order on books for the passenger carrying 747-8I. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>REUTERS/Pascal Rossignol</span></p><p class="caption">An Airbus A380.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Also baked into Boeing's market forecast is the belief that there won't be enough demand of Airbus to successfully deliver more than 100 A380 superjumbos that are still on order. </p><p>"We don't believe Airbus will deliver the rest of their backlog on A380s," Tinseth said.</p><p>Airbus did not immediately respond to a request to for a comment about Tinseth's prediction. </p><p>Fortunately, for Boeing, it has a ready replacement on deck.</p><p>"The big airplane of the future for the aviation industry is going to be the Boeing 777-9,"  the veteran aviation executive said. "It carries 400 passengers, it flies further than the 747 and the A380 does today."</p><p>"It's just the twin-engine, twin-aisle economics of that airplane just beats the big four-engine aircraft and it's just the reality of the market," Tinseth explained. </p><p>According to Tinseth, the large jumbo jets are useful in very specific cases where there is airport congestion. However, most airlines prefer to give their customers the option of more flight frequencies which makes smaller wide-bodies like the 787 more popular. </p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Boeing</span></p><p class="caption">Boeing 747-8F.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Over the past year, the jumbo jet officially ended passenger service with US airlines with both Delta and United sending their aging fleets of 747-400s into retirement. Foreign carriers including British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Air China, Korean, and Lufthansa still operate the aircraft.</p><p>Even though the future for the 747 in passenger service seems a bit grim, the plane is expected to thrive as a cargo jet. </p><p>"The future of the 747 is in the cargo business," Tinseth added.</p><p>Boeing expects there to be a market for around 980 new freighters in the coming years. A Boeing exec reveals what's in store for the 747 jumbo jet and predicts that Airbus won't be able to deliver the rest of its A380s

Experts also note that there are still difficulties that have not been solved yet, like the lack of current infrastructure to support the new vehicles as well as the lack of any federal regulatory standards.</p><p>Additionally, it's impossible to be sure how the flying public will take to the new kind of aircraft once they can book trips on it.</p><p>Despite the potential hurdles, several airlines worldwide have taken interest in eVTOLs and electric planes, with the notable exception of Delta Air Lines, which is the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/delta-only-major-us-carrier-not-order-supersonic-or-evtol-2022-8">only major US carrier that has not yet made a commitment.</a></p><p>Here's a look at the airlines that have invested in electric planes and eVTOLs with the hope they will one day provide an efficient, eco-friendly mode of transportation.</p><h2>Vertical Aerospace's VX4</h2><div type="image" title="The Vx4 is being developed by the UK firm Vertical Aerospace." height="1500" width="2000" msid="94103769" hostid="261" sizebytes="159324"></div><p>Vertical Aerospace's VX4 aircraft has received interest from airlines in every corner of the world, having <a href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20220808005081/en/Vertical-Aerospace-Announces-First-Half-Year-2022-Results">amassed over 1,400 pre-orders for the VX4</a> as of June 30. The company hopes the aircraft will be certified by 2025 and flying soon after that.</p><p>Airline investors include American, Virgin Atlantic, Spanish charter airline Iberojet, Japan Airlines, Brazil-based GOL, Air Greenland, and AirAsia, <a href="https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20220718005818/en/Electric-Flight-Moves-a-Step-Closer-as-Vertical-Aerospace-and-CAE-Partner-on-Pilot-Training">according to the company</a>. The latter three are via placements made by aircraft leasing company Avolon, which has ordered over 500 VX4s. </p><h2>Embraer's Eve</h2><div type="image" title="How the full vehicle could look." height="1200" width="1600" msid="94103771" hostid="261" sizebytes="74182"></div><p>Eve is Embraer's eVTOL four-seater product that has a <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/photos-flying-taxi-with-most-orders-fly-by-2026-embraer-2022-7">backlog of over 1,900 aircraft.</a></p><p>The manufacturer has partnered with several carriers worldwide to promote urban air mobility, like Florida's <a href="https://eveairmobility.com/eve-and-global-crossing-airlines-sign-letter-of-intent-for-up-to-200-evtol-aircraft-and-enable-future-collaboration-for-uam/">Global Crossing Airlines</a>, Australia's <a href="https://eveairmobility.com/eve-and-sydney-seaplanes-announce-partnership-to-bring-uam-services-to-sydney-with-an-initial-order-of-50-evtols/">Sydney Seaplanes</a>, Dubai's <a href="https://eveairmobility.com/eve-and-falcon-aviation-services-announce-partnership-to-introduce-evtol-flights-in-dubai/">Falcon Aviation Services</a>, Kenya Airways' subsidiary <a href="https://eveairmobility.com/eve-and-kenya-airways-fahari-aviation-sign-an-agreement-to-scale-urban-air-mobility-with-an-order-of-up-to-40-evtols-to-fly-people-and-cargo/">Fahari Aviation</a>, Western Australia-based <a href="https://eveairmobility.com/eve-aviair-and-helispirit-announce-partnership-with-an-order-of-up-to-50-evtols/">Aviair</a>, US regional airlines <a href="https://eveairmobility.com/eve-and-republic-airways-announce-partnership-to-develop-regional-operator-network-of-the-future-with-an-order-for-up-to-200-evtol-aircraft/">Republic Airways</a> and <a href="https://eveairmobility.com/eve-and-skywest-announce-partnership-to-develop-regional-operator-network-with-an-order-for-100-evtol-aircraft/">SkyWest Airlines</a>, Singapore-based startup <a href="https://eveairmobility.com/embraers-eve-and-ascent-further-partnership-with-a-commitment-to-bring-uam-operations-to-the-asia-pacific-region/">Ascent</a>, and helicopter operators <a href="https://eveairmobility.com/eve-announces-halo-as-launch-partner-in-the-urban-air-mobility-market-with-an-order-for-200-evtol-aircraft/">Halo</a> and <a href="https://eveairmobility.com/eve-and-helisul-announce-partnership-to-develop-uam-products-and-services-in-brazil-with-an-initial-order-of-up-to-50-evtols/">Helisul Aviation</a>.</p><p>United is the most recent carrier to announce an investment in Eve. On Thursday, the <a href="https://www.united.com/en/us/newsroom/announcements/cision-125237">carrier put down $15 million</a> for a <a href="https://www.united.com/en/us/newsroom/announcements/cision-125237">conditional order</a> for 200 eVTOLS, with an option for 200 more. Eve hopes its eVTOL will be flying passengers as soon as 2026.</p><h2>Airbus' CityAirbus NextGen</h2><div type="image" title="CityAirbus NextGen" height="818" width="1091" msid="94103773" hostid="261" sizebytes="17540"></div><p>Airbus hopes to shake up the flying taxi market with its eVTOL product, CityAirbus NextGen. The four-seater vehicle can fly up to 60 miles, making it a viable candidate for intra-city flying. NextGen <a href="https://www.airbus.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2021-09-airbus-reveals-the-next-generation-of-cityairbus">builds upon Airbus' original CityAirbus</a> with a new design that includes fixed wings and a V-shaped tail.</p><p>With the announcement of the modified eVTOL, the company <a href="https://www.airbus.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2021-09-airbus-reveals-the-next-generation-of-cityairbus">said</a> it plans to conduct test flights in 2023 and get the flying taxi certified by 2025.</p><p>The <a href="https://www.airbus.com/en/newsroom/press-releases/2022-04-airbus-and-ita-airways-partner-to-develop-urban-air-mobility-in">planemaker has partnered with Italy's ITA Airways </a>to "explore the creation of tailored UAM services, by identifying strategic use cases for emission-free mobility solutions."</p><h2>Joby Aviation's eVTOL</h2><div type="image" title="The Joby flying vehicle in flight, with clouds and the sunset behind it." height="3648" width="4864" msid="94103775" hostid="261" sizebytes="111798"></div><p>Joby Aviation took over Uber Elevate — the company's air taxi arm — in 2020. The manufacturer has since partnered with Toyota to create a five-seater eVTOL, and Tokyo-based All Nippon Airways to <a href="https://ir.jobyaviation.com/news-events/press-releases/detail/28/ana-holdings-and-joby-partner-to-bring-air-taxi-service-to">bring the electric vehicle to Japan</a>. </p><p>Like many of its competitors, the manufacturer hopes to get its air taxi flying as soon as 2024.</p><h2>Heart Aerospace's ES-19</h2><div type="image" title="United Airlines and Heart Aerospace partner to develop an electric aircraft." height="664" width="886" msid="94103777" hostid="261" sizebytes="21480"></div><p>While not an eVTOL, Heart Aerospace is marketing a 19-seater electric plane, <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/electric-aircraft-set-to-take-flight-by-2026-under-new-agreements-with-united-airlines-ventures-breakthrough-energy-ventures-mesa-airlines-heart-aerospace-1030600846">dubbed the ES-19</a>. United has <a href="https://heartaerospace.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/Heart-Aerospace-Series-A-Press-Release-July-13-2021.pdf">ordered</a> 100 of the type once the aircraft meets the airline's "safety, business and operating requirements." When the cold chill rolls around each November, I start plotting: Which island will I escape to this winter? And with year-round warm temperatures, sunny rays, and no rainy season, I often find my way back to the Canary Islands in spring and summer, too.</p><p>As such, some islands within this remote archipelago can be easier to get to than others. Here are my best tips for ensuring a seamless getaway.</p><h2>Getting to the Canary Islands</h2><div type="image" title="Roads leading to a cruise ship in port in Tenerife, Canary Islands" height="3840" width="5119" msid="90060597" hostid="261"></div><p>It's most affordable to fly to the four largest Canary Islands: Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote. Flights to these islands operate not only from Madrid and other Spanish cities on airlines like Iberia/Iberia Express and Air Europa but also from various cities all over Europe on airlines including Air France, Aer Lingus, and British Airways. </p><p>Low-cost carriers such as Ryanair, Vueling, Jet2, Eurowings, Wizzair, and easyJet fly to the Canaries from many Spanish and European hubs, though they often come with added fees that may negate the cheap cost when considered cumulatively.</p><p><keyword id="11896628" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="travel" source="Orion">Travel</keyword> to the smaller islands of La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro can be slightly more complicated and take longer.</p><p>If you'd like to island hop, once here, you may fly between the Canary Islands on airlines such as the local Binter Canarias, as well as Air Europa and CanaryFly. You may rent cars at airports, hotels, or freestanding locations in resort towns. </p><p>International car-rental companies found on the islands include Hertz and Avis or consider using <a href="https://www.pluscar-tenerife.com/booking.php?lang=en" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored nofollow sponsored">Plus Car</a>, a local favorite I love to rent from thanks to low prices and friendly customer service. <a href="https://www.orlandorc.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored nofollow sponsored">Orlando Rent-a-Car</a> is another car-rental option with a large presence on all of the islands except for El Hierro.</p><p>Most of the Canary Islands have decent highways and paved roads, but you may need to go off-road to visit remote beaches or far-flung destinations, so make sure to check with your car-rental provider that doing so is permitted.</p><p>Like much of Europe, most rental cars in the Canary Islands are manual transmission, but it is possible to rent automatic cars, albeit at a higher price.</p><h3>Taxis and buses on the Canary Islands</h3><div type="image" title="A bus driving through the mountains in Canary Islands" height="4906" width="6542" msid="90060601" hostid="261"></div><p>If you don't rent a car, there are taxi stands in some towns and resort communities. Taxis often have fixed prices for specific routes, though rates can be high, sometimes even more expensive than a days-long car rental. Many taxi drivers don't speak English, either. There are no ride-hailing services such as Uber on any of the islands.</p><p>While taking the bus is safe and cheap, it's not usually the quickest or most convenient way to get around, so I highly recommend renting a car.</p><p>If you do take the bus, make sure to check schedules and know that services are typically reduced and minimal on Sundays and holidays. These concerns have a very strong basis in fact.<br />
<br />
For instance, the <a href="http://fortune.com/2016/09/14/didi-china-users-prices/">Didi-Uber merger already seems to be antagonizing its customers with high prices and poor service</a>. It beckons a sobering, and rather grim future for the on-demand taxi market in India where mega-consolidation seems inevitable.<br />
<br /> But perhaps an emerging <keyword id="67392" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Monopoly">monopoly</keyword> is already imposing its dominance in the <keyword id="3937889" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Transportation-sector-in-India">transportation sector in India</keyword>.<br />
<br />
A recent Indigo flight that I was on was scheduled to leave at 5:55 PM.<br />
<br />
It ended up leaving at 1:20 AM. (Thats a near 7.5 hour delay, for a 1 hour 40 minute flight)<br />
<br /> Just like every other flight, it had its fair share of <keyword id="77983" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="business-professionals">business professionals</keyword> who had planned meetings and onward journeys with the assumption that the flight would be on time. It also had senior citizens who needed medical attention and mothers having to devote all of their attention to their infant children.<br />
<br />
Many of us requested (demanded ?) temporary accommodations until there was some certainty in the schedule.<br />
<br />
We were told, in a rather matter-of-fact manner, that<br />
<br />
“We don’t provide such services”<br />
<br />
On that day, almost every other Indigo flight was delayed by at least 2 hours while many other airlines operated per schedule.<br />
<br />
When we finally did board the aircraft, not a single apology was forthcoming.<br />
<br />
For some reason, the first thing I decided to Google when the plane touched down was to check on Indigo’s market share, and found that <a href="http://www.livemint.com/Companies/4BOficqz7aIfoahLwEyxBL/Indias-air-traffic-grows-over-25-in-July-from-yearago-per.html">Indigo today has a 40% market share of India’s air travel space</a>.<br />
<br />
To provide a perspective, Indigo has nearly as much market share as the next 3 competitors (Jet Airways, Air India, and Spice Jet) combined.<br />
<br />
<em>Clearly, monopoly allows you the luxury of not having to conform to the protocols of professional etiquette.</em><br />
<br />
Experiences such as this have created an inherent aversion to a monopolistic market, especially for those who believe in “free-markets” and the democratic nature of capitalism.<br />
<br />
<em>We would like to believe that economies go through waves, alternating between peaks where a few companies exert considerable monopolistic power, and troughs where there is intense competition and disruption of the existing paradigms.<br />
<br />
But is that really the case ?</em><br />
<br />
A look at how the top 500 companies have stacked up as a percentage of total World Income reveals a surprisingly monotonic trend.<br />

<em>We have decidedly been moving towards an economy where a few dominant companies control an ever increasing share of the market and are therefore in a position to exert an ever increasing amount of power and influence.</em><br />
<br />
But first, do we truly understand what competition and monopoly mean ?<br />
<br />
Think back to the time you referred to the cabs market as highly competitive because of the price wars between Uber &amp; Ola, about how the telecom business was difficult because Airtel was now under threat from Reliance, or used a similar argument to describe (dare I say it) the airline industry.<br />
<br />
Do you notice that in each of these markets, the competition comprises of only a handful of players (sometimes exactly two), each with significant market share and pricing power ?<br />
<br />
<em>Most markets that we think of as being competitive, are in fact those with an <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oligopoly">Oligopoly</a> in place, a characteristic that makes them distinctly similar to a collection of monopolistic firms.</em><br />
<br />
However, the omnipresence of Oligopoly might not necessarily be a bad thing (Even if <a href="https://www.techinasia.com/flipkart-ola-seek-policy-help">Oligopolists themselves say otherwise</a>).<br />
<br />
Some would say that the vast cash reserves that the big four internet firms (Apple, Google, Facebook and Microsoft) have accumulated through their monopolistic power allows them the resources to continuously focus on innovation in a manner no fledgling firm burdened by competition would ever be able to.<br />
<br />
<em>There is a reason innovation matters so much in a monopolistic setting.</em><br />
<br />
While Kodak and Nokia remain recent examples of monopolies eaten alive due to their inability to adapt to a rapidly changing technology paradigm, a more profound case might be made of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keiretsu">Japanese keiretsu</a>.<br />
<br />
The keiretsu comprise of large conglomerates that continue to control an intricately connected empire of oligopolistic firms, such as Mitsubishi and Toyota, that have spread their influence across manufacturing, banking and financial services, food, metals and chemicals, mining and infrastructure as well as content and entertainment.<br />
<br />
With such densely connected networks whose interests were protected by the government, there was little incentive for innovation and little chance for new entrants to break through.<br />
<br />
<em>If Japan’s GDP has been growing at the negligible rate of 0.5% annually since 1980, might that be attributed, to a significant degree, to the keiretsu that continue to exist today ?</em><br />
<br />
However, innovation can also allow a monopoly to create an entirely new monopoly.<br />
<br />
Case in point : Blackberry (Wait, what ?)<br />

Or will it be a company like SpaceX looking inward to create an inter-planetary transportation monopoly (Example : Hmmmm…)<br />
