But she said she was shocked to be diagnosed with early-onset osteoarthritis at the age of 47.</p><p>"I was like, I'm too young for <a href="https://www.insider.com/arthritis-signs-2018-11">arthritis</a>," she told Insider, recalling how an orthopedic doctor identified the issue after she had X-rays and an MRI.</p><p>Garth has the most common form of degenerative disease. It happens when the cartilage that protects the ends of bones wears down as time goes by. The irreversible tissue damage can lead to the need for surgery, such as hip, shoulder, or knee replacements.</p><p>But instead of thinking the worst about her future, the mom of three has a positive attitude. "It was just a new, interesting development in my maturing," she said.</p><h2>Sports like golf have helped relieve the symptoms</h2><p>Garth, who celebrated her 50th birthday in April, added: "You don't think of yourself as slowing down or anything stopping you from all the things you do every day."</p><p>She finds that stretching and other types of movement ease her symptoms, particularly playing golf and hiking with her dogs near her home in Los Angeles.</p><p>"When you know what you're dealing with physically, there's always a workaround," said Garth. "I definitely don't let anything limit me."</p><p>She does not take medication for her condition but often applies a topical, over-the-counter <a href="https://www.voltarengel.com/">gel</a> that she said offers "relief" to any aches in her joints.</p><p>It took time before she felt comfortable enough to tell other people about her osteoarthritis. "I didn't want to be <em>that </em>person who talks about their ailments," Garth said.</p><h2>She wants to make younger people aware that osteoarthritis doesn't just affect the elderly</h2><p>Garth is speaking out now in a bid to demystify the disease among younger people. "When you hear the word arthritis, you associate it with the elderly and people who are immobile who can't live an active life," she said.</p><p>Garth said that her situation shows that the disease can strike anyone. She advised those experiencing the same kind of aches she has suffered to consult their doctor.</p><p>She has faced other <keyword id="11894571" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health" source="Orion">health</keyword> problems in the past. In 2009, she revealed that she was diagnosed with a leaky heart valve at the age of 30. "Down the road, it's something that could get more complicated or not," she told <a href="https://people.com/celebrity/jennie-garth-reveals-heart-ailment/">People</a> magazine at the time. "People have had valve replacements and that kind of thing."</p>

A group of passionate fans of the show rushed toward her and Perry and the two stars were put into one of the zoo's cages to protect them from the crowd. </p><p>"And it sort of summed it up for me because I felt like a zoo animal," Garth said on the podcast.</p><p>"It was just weird," Garth continued. "And then it got too crazy, and people were rushing the zoo cages. And we had to go out through one of the enclosures of the animals - I don't remember, the monkeys or something - but I just remember them actually putting us in a cage at the zoo."</p><div type="image" title="90210 fox" height="727" width="969" msid="83405260" hostid="261"></div><p>Looking back, Garth said that was "one of the pivotal moments" in her life as she realized she and her costars were famous.</p><p>By 1991 the series showcasing the lives of high school teens in Beverly Hills had begun airing its first season on Fox and teens went wild for the show. Especially Garth, who played Kelly Taylor, and Perry as Dylan McKay <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-cw-riverdale-season-4-premiere-luke-perry-tribute-2019-10">(Perry died in 2019).</a></p><p>At that time, no star of the show could go out in public without being chased by fans, but Spelling pointed out on the podcast that the male stars got it worse than the females.</p><p>"When everyone started fanning out over us, mostly we remember the boys, they would go crazy for the boys," Spelling said. "And we were like, 'They're dreamy, but we are with them every day.' So it was very different to see how girls would freak out."</p><p>Clearly, Garth would have had a better experience at the zoo that day if she didn't go with Perry.</p>

Doherty reprised the role in 2008's "90210," and the 2019 revival, "BH90210."</p><p>The series turned Doherty and co-stars including Jason Priestly, Luke Perry, and Jennie Garth into household names.</p><p><a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/shannen-doherty-cancer-lawsuit-management-firm-health-insurance-2024-7">Doherty was diagnosed</a> with breast cancer in 2015 and said on Instagram in 2017 that she was in remission.</p><p>The cancer returned in 2019 <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/shannen-doherty-has-stage-4-cancer-kept-secret-90210-filming-2020-2">while she was filming "BH90210"</a>, spreading to her brain and bones.</p><p>The actor's publicist, Leslie Sloane, confirmed Doherty's death in a statement to Business Insider.</p><p>"The devoted daughter, sister, aunt, and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace," she said.</p><p>Social media was flooded with tributes to Doherty from her family, fans, and former costars.</p><p>Her mother, Rosa Doherty, told <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://people.com/shannen-doherty-mother-rosa-speaks-out-after-her-death-exclusive-8678258">People</a>: "She is my beautiful girl and my heart. Our family wants to thank everyone who has shown love and support for our Shannen throughout her life. We are truly appreciative."</p><p>Priestly, who played Brenda Walsh's twin brother on "90210," shared photos of the pair on Instagram from the 1990s series.</p><p>"Shocked and saddened to hear about the passing of my friend Shannen. She was a force of nature and I will miss her. Sending love and light to her family in this dark time," he wrote.</p> <p>Garth also posted old photos of herself with Doherty on Instagram and called her "one of the strongest people I have ever known."</p><p>She wrote: "She was courageous, passionate, determined and very loving and generous. I will miss her and will always honor her deeply in my heart and in my memories. My heart breaks for her family and Bowie."</p> <p>Doherty's ex-husband, Ashley Hamilton, told <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://tmz.com/2024/07/15/shannen-doherty-ex-husband-ashley-hamilton-breaks-silence-death/">TMZ</a> that his heart "aches" over her passing. The couple were together from 1993 to 1994.</p><p>"Shannen was not only my wife, she was my guardian angel. Even though things don't always work out the way we hope they will, she stood by my side during some of my darkest times," he said. "My love and admiration for her lasted far longer than our short-lived marriage."</p><p>Hamilton added: "The world lost a free-spirited soul and my heart aches for her and for all those who loved her. May she rest in peace."</p><p>"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" star Sarah Michelle Gellar also paid tribute to her friend of 30 years.</p><p>They became friends in the 1990s when they both starred on TV shows airing on The WB network — Gellar on "Buffy," while Doherty played young witch Prue Halliwell on "Charmed."</p><p>"How do you possibly find the right words to sum up 30 years of friendship? I keep reminding myself it only hurts this much because, there was so much love," she wrote. "Thank you, for all your kind words and support. <ul class="summary-list"><li>Tori Spelling revealed that she got an eye ulcer after leaving her daily contacts in her eyes for weeks. </li><li>She said the longest time she's left them in is "maybe 20 days" at a time.</li></ul><p>At the beginning of Tuesday's episode of <a href="https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/90210mg/id1534142827" target="_blank" rel="noopener">iHeartRadio's "9021OMG" podcast,</a> Tori Spelling revealed that she was wearing an eye patch because she got an eye ulcer after <a href="https://www.insider.com/college-student-wore-contact-lens-sleeping-blind-parasite-infection-2023-4">leaving her daily contacts in for weeks.</a></p><p>"It's my fault, I did this to myself," <a href="https://www.insider.com/90210-beverly-hills-best-moments-2019-7">the "90210" star said .</a> "I don't take them out, I sleep in them and you're supposed to change them."</p><p>"I've been known to go maybe 20 days," Spelling said to her co-host and former <a href="https://www.insider.com/jennie-garth-osteoarthritis-joint-disease-2022-5">co-star Jennie Garth</a>, who gasped. </p><p>Spelling said her doctor told her she was "lucky to get away with it."The ulcer, she said, is "like a cut flap on your eyeball" and it "hurts so bad" but should heal after seven to 10 days wearing an eye patch.</p> <p>For now, her <a href="https://www.insider.com/celebrities-with-large-families-kids-2020-5">14-year-old daughter Stella McDermott</a> is her "emotional support child." ("A child has to take me around, literally. I have a designated seeing-eye child," the "Scary Movie 2" star said.)</p><p>But once her ulcer heals, Spelling said, she's taking no chances: she's going to switch to 30-day contacts. </p><h2>An optometrist explains why you should take out your contact lenses at night</h2><p>Dr. Hanish Patel, an optometrist at <a href="https://www.ea-ny.com/provider.html">Eye Associates of New York</a>, told Insider that there's an inherent <a href="https://www.insider.com/college-student-wore-contact-lens-sleeping-blind-parasite-infection-2023-4">risk of infection with contact lenses</a>, but using daily disposable lenses — and changing them regularly — can help to minimize that risk.</p><p>Patients who opt for resusable lenses, which can be cleaned and reworn for up to 30 days, tend to have a higher risk of infection if they don't clean them appropriately, Patel said. With daily disposables, all you have to do is remember to take them out before you go to sleep.</p><p>"Once your lids are closed, it's warm and wet, and it's a nice environment for bacteria and other things to to grow," Patel said. "That's why we generally don't recommend sleeping in contact lenses."</p><div type="image" title="Tori Spelling Alberto E. Corneal ulcers, like what Spelling experienced, can lead to <a href="https://www.insider.com/woman-showered-wearing-contact-lenses-eye-removed-parasite-tap-water-2022-10">permanent vision loss</a> depending on their location on the eye.</p><p>In general, it's good practice to wash your hands before changing your contacts, remove them before bedtime, and put in a fresh pair in the morning, Patel said. Your eyes will thank you in the long run.</p>

It's not like she had a guest spot where she didn't interact with any of the show's main stars. They say his brain scan of choice, the SPECT, isn't a catch-all diagnostic or treatment tool, although he seems to use it like one, and that his multi-million dollar business preys on people's desperation.  </p><p>Amen's clinic did not respond to an interview request. </p><h2>Amen distances himself from traditional psychiatry, with an emphasis on <keyword id="12343643" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="brain-health" source="Orion">brain health</keyword>, not mental health</h2><p>Amen earned his medical degree from the Oral Roberts University School of Medicine in 1982, an evangelical Christian school that <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/local/1989/09/16/oral-roberts-to-shut-down-hospital-and-medical-school-at-tulsa/16a43a8a-cb9c-4fa1-8762-1d850d59fd69/">shut down in 1989</a>. He <a href="https://danielamenmd.com/about/">completed his general psychiatric training at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center</a>, and trained in child and adolescent psychiatry at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu. </p><p>Amen also <a href="https://www.amenclinics.com/about-us/">calls himself a neuroscientist</a> and brain imaging expert, as he earned a radioactive material license for nuclear brain imaging in 1985, <a href="https://danielamenmd.com/about/">his website says</a>. </p><p>Early in his career, Amen was revered as an envelope-pusher and earned a "Distinguished Fellow" designation from the American Psychiatric Association, Tucker <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/magazine/daniel-amen-is-the-most-popular-psychiatrist-in-america-to-most-researchers-and-scientists-thats-a-very-bad-thing/2012/08/07/467ed52c-c540-11e1-8c16-5080b717c13e_story.html">reported</a>. (The APA has not responded to Insider's request to answer whether this title still stands.)</p><p>In 1989, he established the Amen Clinics, which now has nine — and counting — locations, <a href="https://www.amenclinics.com/locations/">its website says</a>. He has written more than 40 books, hosted a PBS series, and continues to produce <a href="https://www.youtube.com/c/AmenClinic">the YouTube series "Scan My Brain." </a>He rubs elbows with other controversial medical characters including <a href="https://www.drozshow.com/videos/unleash-power-female-brain-pt-1">Dr. Oz</a> and <a href="https://www.acsh.org/news/2020/10/14/mark-hyman-dr-oz-nutrition-says-food-killing-people-holocaust-15093">Dr. Mark Hyman</a>. </p><p>Amen Clinics' bread and butter are their SPECT scans, which measure blood flow in various parts of the brain. In conventional medicine, they're used for diagnosing and monitoring brain diseases like Alzheimer's, stroke, and seizures, <a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/spect-scan">according to the Mayo Clinic</a>. </p><p>But Amen uses them to, he says, better understand all manner of conditions, from <a href="https://www.amenclinics.com/about-us/">obesity</a> and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdNHaEY_Tqk">performance anxiety</a> to substance abuse and ADHD, and to demonstrate to patients that their symptoms aren't all in their heads. "Our brain imaging work clearly shows that we are not dealing with mental health issues, rather we are dealing with brain health issues that steal your mind," Amen's website says.</p><p>The scans are <a href="https://observer.com/2016/08/head-case-why-has-pbs-promoted-controversial-shrink-dr-daniel-amen">rarely covered by insurance</a>, and are often followed by expensive treatment recommendations like Amen's line of supplements and time in the clinic's <a href="https://www.insider.com/the-body-lab-london-health-luxury-fitness-center-treatments-tour-2022-1">hyperbaric oxygen chamber</a>, <a href="https://www.npr.org/transcripts/1057232056">NPR reported in 2021</a>. Justin Bieber is one such client who <a href="https://www.amenclinics.com/blog/how-justin-bieber-is-using-brain-science-to-fight-depression/">saw Amen for addictions, anxiety, and depression</a>, and used hyperbaric oxygen chambers as a part of his treatment. He now <a href="https://www.medpagetoday.com/popmedicine/celebritydiagnosis/85109#:~:text=Bieber%20has%20at%20least%20two,it%20decreases%20your%20stress%20levels.">has at least two in his home</a>. </p><h2>Psychiatrists and neurologists largely dismiss Amen </h2><p>Most of Amen's peers have long shunned his practice. In 2008, neurologist <a href="https://www.rburton.com/">Dr. Robert Burton,</a> author of "A Skeptic's Guide to the Mind: What Neuroscience Can and Cannot Tell Us About Ourselves," called his work a <a href="https://www.salon.com/2008/05/12/daniel_amen/">"Brain Scam" in Salon.</a> Burton said Amen's use of SPECT scans to help slow the progression of Alzheimer's have no scientific basis. </p><p><a href="https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/editorial-staff/harriet-hall-md-associate-editor/">Dr. Harriet Hall</a>, a former Air Force flight surgeon who writes about pseudoscience, <a href="https://observer.com/2016/08/head-case-why-has-pbs-promoted-controversial-shrink-dr-daniel-amen/#:~:text=An%20initial%20consultation%20at%20one,medical%20insurance%20does%20not%20cover.">told the Observer</a> in 2016 that Amen "charges patients thousands of dollars to inject them with radioactive compounds and show them pretty colored pictures of their brains without any credible evidence that it adds to the diagnostic or treatment processes." </p><p>And in 2021, Harvard neurologist <a href="https://hsci.harvard.edu/people/steven-hyman-md">Dr. Steven Hyman</a> said "people who are desperate are vulnerable to snake oil, and this has all of the look and feel of a clinic that's preying on people's desperation." </p><p>Just as problematic, he added, is that Amen's patients may be getting misdiagnosed with issues like chronic traumatic encephalopathy when they really have, and should be appropriately treated for, conditions like depression. </p><p>In past interviews, Amen points to his own research and results from his hundreds of thousands of patients finding that "85% of people report a better quality of life after treatment at Amen Clinics" as evidence that his approach works. And some colleagues have his back. </p><p>"His work has had a huge impact on the addiction field," <a href="http://www.newportacademy.com/about/meet-our-staff/david-smith/">David Smith</a>, founder of the Haight-Ashbury Free Medical Clinic in San Francisco, told Tucker. "He's a very open guy, a good guy."</p><h2><keyword id="12650493" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="alcohol-abuse" source="Orion">Alcohol abuse</keyword> can damage the brain, but there are better ways to view it than SPECT scans</h2><p>There's no question <keyword id="11994111" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="alcohol" source="Orion">alcohol</keyword> consumption can lead to brain damage, manifesting as short-term symptoms like memory loss and long-term consequences like brain shrinkage, <a href="https://www.webmd.com/connect-to-care/addiction-treatment-recovery/alcohol/serious-effects-alcohol-on-brain">according to WebMD</a>. </p><p>Addiction expert Dr. <a href="https://nyulangone.org/news/addiction-expert-health-equity-advocate-joins-department-psychiatry-nyu-langone-health" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Ayana Jordan,</a> an associate professor of psychiatry at NYU Langone Health who said she's not familiar with Amen or his work, listed eight tools clinicians can use to detect alcohol's damage to the brain. SPECT scans weren't among them. </p><p>"There are other tools/ways that are WAY LESS expensive to characterize how alcohol affects the brain," she wrote in an email to Insider. There's also no way to know solely from a SPECT scan if changes are related to alcohol or something else, she added. </p><p>Jordan said she's glad Hadid's scan led to healthier behaviors, "but not everyone will have access to SPECT, nor should they." </p>

John Reilly, 'General Hospital' alum and soap opera veteran, has died at age 86

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span><a href="http://www.gettyimages.com/license/494548649">Frazer Harrison/Getty Images</a></span></p><p class="caption">Match made in altruistic heaven.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Most people would think if it's not good looks that make a man most attractive to women, then it's definitely a sense of humor.</p><p>But studies consistently show that <a href="http://www.techinsider.io/what-women-look-for-in-a-man-2016-1">altruism</a> is a top quality women are drawn to when they are looking for a relationship.</p><p>And a <a href="http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/bjop.12208/full">new study in the British Journal of Psychology</a> found altruistic men may have more sex, too.</p><p>The researchers asked unmarried Canadian adults how much they did good deeds like giving money to charity, or helping someone get their car out of the snow. They then asked the participants how often they had sex and how many partners they've had.</p><p>Men who reported more altruistic acts had more sex - and more partners. For those who were in relationships, good-hearted men were more likely to have had more sex in the last 30 days, too.</p><p>In the second experiment of the study, the researchers had undergraduate students say whether they would like to donate money they might receive for participating to charity. Those who said they would also tended to have more casual sex, more sex in relationships, and more lifetime sex partners overall.</p><p>Another study, <a href="http://evp.sagepub.com/content/14/1/1474704915623698.full">published in January 2016 in the journal Evolutionary Psychology</a>, presented 202 women with different men to choose from. The different combinations of choices were either attractive or not, and they either did a good deed or didn't.</p><p>The women chose the selfish, attractive men for a one-night stand. But for a long-term relationship, they chose the altruistic man whether he was attractive or not.</p><p><span>A slightly older</span><span> study, </span><a href="http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/00224545.2013.768595">published in The Journal of Social Psychology in 2013</a><span>, really drives this home. That study found that women valued altruism above other traits as a measure of whether a potential mate would make a good parent. </span><span>The women</span><span> also said that altruism was important for short-term relationships, but significantly more women said the trait mattered for the long-term.</span></p><p>Yet another study, <a href="http://spp.sagepub.com/content/6/5/521.full">published in Social Psychological and Personality Science in July 2015</a>, analyzed Germans' responses to a large annual survey.</p><p>Single people who reported doing good deeds were much more likely to say they were in a relationship the next year. It makes women <a href="http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0160289611000523">assume a man is more intelligent</a>.</p><p>A sense of humor is a good indicator of sexual activity, too. In <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/humor-sapiens/201105/laughing-all-the-way-the-bedroom">one study</a>, men who women rated as funnier reported having more sex with more partners.</p><p>For building long-term relationships, though, researchers find over and over again that altruism is a crucial and highly desirable trait.</p><p>Psychologists have yet to pit humor head-to-head against altruism. It's also important to keep in mind that many of these studies are small, and that people often behave differently in real life than they do in a lab setting, or when responding to a survey. Especially when reporting positive experiences like charity work or sex, men may be more likely to overestimate how much they actually do those things. And due to the way these kinds of studies are designed, they can't say conclusively that it's altruism specifically that's attractive; it might be other traits associated with altruism, or that men attractive for other reasons might also happen to be altruistic. </p><p>But the large number of studies and the consistent findings in favor of altruism are building a pretty solid case that there are some side benefits to doing good deeds. These movies have helped it defy industry trends that are hurting rival networks.</strong></li><li><strong>The company's formula allows it to crank out movies in three weeks for roughly $2 million each.</strong></li><li><strong>Most of the films are shot in the summer: "I've gotten used to being really hot and sweating in my boots," says Lacy Chabert, a recurring star.</strong></li><li><strong>Advertisers and viewers are drawn in because they know exactly what they're going to get.</strong></li></ul><p><br>Roger left his big New York City newspaper job to head back to his Vermont hometown to take over the family newspaper right smack in the middle of the Christmas season.</br></p><p>Once there, he and his high-school rival, Samantha, now the anchor for the local news station, wound up chasing the biggest story of the year: What will happen to the town's Christmas-tree farm, which is set to be razed by developers? Will they save the farm, get the big story, and keep from falling for each other? Find out on "Christmas Scoop," starring Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Jennie Garth.</p><p>OK, this isn't a real movie. But if you've ever heard of the Hallmark Channel, you can picture the whole thing.</p><p>The cable network is set to release the first of 33 original Christmas movies - most featuring a pair of recognizable TV stars meeting cute near the mistletoe - this weekend - before we're even done with Halloween.</p><p>Hallmark, it seems, has never stopped saying Merry Christmas, and it's how the network, owned by Crown Media, is defying every trend in the media business. It has milked the Christmas stories to consistently deliver strong live ratings (meaning people watch when the movies are broadcast, not later, say, over the internet), while its rivals grapple with cable <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/category/cord-cutting">cord-cutting</a> and competition from streaming services.<br><br>If you aren't familiar, here are two examples of the kinds of films we're talking about:</br></br></p><ul><li>2015's "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5133572/">A Crown for Christmas"</a> starring Danica McKellar ("The Wonder Years") as a recently fired New York exec who ends up working for, and falling for, a prince during Christmas.</li><li>2016's <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5676118/plotsummary?ref_=tt_ov_pl">"A Wish for Christmas"</a> starring Lacey Chabert ("Mean Girls") as a woman granted a wish by Santa Claus, a wish that expires in 48 hours.</li></ul><p>"Their movies are as comforting as programming can be. You can grab a blanket, enjoy a glass of wine, and know the movie will have a happy ending," said Brad Krevoy, a producer who has worked on theatrical movies such as "Dumb and Dumber" and "Threesome."</p><h2>Very traditional media</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>People are canceling cable subscriptions and ditching live TV for Netflix, Amazon, and other streaming apps.</p><p>Cable networks are striving to produce original prestige series at a time when there are <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/fx-john-landgraf-apple-peak-tv-2017-1">upwards of 500 on the air</a>. At the same time, mid-tier cable networks are struggling, and some, like Esquire, have disappeared. Everyone in media is trying to figure out where they fit on Facebook and Snapchat.</p><p>Not Hallmark.</p><p>"It's weird," said director Ron Oliver, who's worked on numerous Hallmark projects and logged time on Nickelodeon's "Goosebumps" in the 1990s. "With Hallmark, you actually turn on the TV at 8 p.m. and watch collectively. It speaks to a real need."</p><p>In 2016, Hallmark movies attracted over 2 million live viewers, though by November and December those numbers spiked to 4 million, according to Nielsen. The rating record was set by Candace Cameron Bure's "<a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4180032/">Christmas Under Wraps</a>," in 2014, and it&#xa0;actually just <em>added</em> a third cable network, Hallmark Drama, on top of its core network and Hallmark Movies and Mysteries - all part of the&#xa0;<span>Crown Media Family Networks division of Hallmark Cards</span>.<br><br>Crown Media president and CEO Bill Abbot chalks the success up to a commitment to the formula.</br></br></p><p>"The business has been so driven by trying to hit the home run, trying to replicate the success of 'The Walking Dead,'" he said. "Hits are very hard to find. That's a very risky strategy. And it's detrimental to the cable industry.</p><p>"People don't know what they are going to get from original channels," Abbot added. "That's what's driving a lot of the decline in audience."</p><h2>Taking back Christmas</h2><p>The original cable Christmas movie wasn't Hallmark's baby. Rather in the mid-1990s, ABC Family kicked off the craze with its "25 Days of Christmas" franchise. That led to classics such as 2007's <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Holiday-Handcuffs-Melissa-Joan-Hart/dp/B001BAWKQU">"Holiday in Handcuffs"</a> featuring Melissa Joan Hart&#xa0;taking&#xa0;Mario Lopez hostage while he steals her heart- of course at Christmas time.</p><p>Though the Hallmark channel launched in 2001, Crown Media had made <a href="http://deadline.com/2011/05/hallmark-hall-of-fame-ends-on-cbs-129410/">TV movies for decades for networks like CBS</a>. But around 2011, as ABC Family (now called Freeform) leaned into targeting teens, Crown went after Christmas in a bigger way.</p><p>"We did look at what '25 Days of Christmas' had become in people's minds and said, 'Wait a minute. We have a brand and a hundred-year legacy,'" Michelle Vicary, EVP of programming&#xa0;<span>&amp; network program publicity, Crown Media Family Networks,&#xa0;</span>said. "We should lean into that as much as we can and do more of it."</p><p>It started paying off immediately. Now Hallmark produces movies tied to Valentine's Day, fall harvest season, June weddings, and summer holidays. But starting October 27, it's pretty much all Christmas movies for the rest of the year.</p><p>"People started to say things to us, like, 'I turn in on right after Halloween and don't turn it off until New Year's," Vicary said.</p><p>"In this day and age, with the multitude of programs, the notion of a strict adherence to one's brand - that's friendly, inviting, and welcoming - is a huge plus," said Bruce Vinokour, a television agent at the Creative Artists Agency.</p><h2>A feel-good Blumhouse</h2><p>How exactly will Hallmark make 87 original movies this year, including 33 Christmas movies?</p><p>The company is known for being disciplined and deliberate. Hallmark typically shoots movies over about three weeks for $2 million - the price of some individual TV episodes or, as Oliver put it, "the catering budget for Transformers."<br><br>The network is almost like the Yuletide version of the much-admired <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blumhouse-productions-get-out-split-2017-2">low-budget horror studio Blumhouse</a>.</br></br></p><p>Most movies are shot in Canada, where Hallmark gets tax breaks and other benefits from using local production crews. Vancouver is the biggest outlet, given its wintry milieu, though Hallmark has made movies in Toronto, Montreal, and, in some cases, Romania.</p><p>The timing is often tight. Actress Lacey Chabert said she shot a movie last summer that aired four weeks later.</p><p>When Business Insider talked to director <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0646987/">Ron Oliver </a>in mid-October, he was in postproduction on <a href="http://www.hallmarkchannel.com/the-christmas-train">"The Christmas Train"</a> (Danny Glover, Dermot Mulroney), which is scheduled to run in late November. Oliver was still writing "Reindeer Games," which he's shooting in November for a December airdate.</p><p>"It's literally down to the wire," he said. "But I always remind people: They shot 'Casablanca' in 18 days."</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><h2>Christmas is good business</h2><p>Kagan, a media-research group within S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence, estimated that Hallmark reeled in $431.3 million in revenue between <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword> and affiliate fees from cable distributors. That's up from less than $300 million in 2012.</p><p>To put that in context, Lifetime's revenue is roughly double that of Hallmark's, but net operating revenue from 2012 to 2016 has remained relatively flat, $876.4 million to $875.4 million, Kagan estimates.</p><p>Advertisers have noticed Hallmark's ascendancy.</p><p>"If you look at cable in general, there are ratings declines all over the place. And every fourth quarter they are growing. It's kind of incredible," said Keri Feeley, SVP and group partner of integrated investment at the ad-buying firm UM.</p><p>Marketers are particularly drawn to Hallmark because the content is considered safe. And for viewers, "They always find actors that remind you of your childhood," said Feeley.</p><h2>Familiar faces</h2><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>There's something of a debate over who is the record holder for most Hallmark Christmas movie appearances - between Candace Cameron Bure (who became a star on "Full House"), Lori Loughlin (also from "Full House"), and Lacey Chabert ("Party of Five" and "Mean Girls"). Though Danica McKellar (Winnie Cooper from "The Wonder Years") is coming on strong, said Vicary.</p><p>"It's tough to say," Vicary said. "Lori Loughlin owned August."</p><p>Chabert did her first Hallmark movie in 2010: <a href="http://www.hallmarkchannel.com/elevator-girl">"Elevator Girl"</a> (a guy and a girl get stuck in an elevator). Her first Christmas movie was "<a href="http://www.hallmarkchannel.com/matchmaker-santa">Matchmaker Santa</a>," and she estimates she's done eight or nine since.</p><p>"The way their company works is a family and it mirrors their product," she told Business Insider. "They really care about what they're putting out."</p><p>Still, Chabert said that the shooting schedule is like "boot camp" in that you "eat, breath, and sleep the movie."</p><p>"It's intense - it's hard to make a movie in 15 days. They know what they are doing," she told Business Insider.</p><p>Chabert said that for whatever reason, most of her Christmas movies have been shot in the summer. <br><br>"That's fine by me," she said. "I've gotten used to being really hot and sweating in my boots."</br></br></p><h2>Make it snow</h2><p>One thing that can't be different: "You have to have snow," Vicary said. That's nonnegotiable.</p><p>Visual-effects expert <a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm5431809/">Luc Benning</a> has worked on several Hallmark projects. There are a few ways to make snow happen, even in August. Options include using:</p><ul><li>snow blankets (which look like car-seat cushions, Benning says)</li><li>fire-retardant foam (increasingly popular)</li><li>a papier-mâché-like product called a <a href="http://www.flash-sfx.cz/en/rental-shop/produkt/krendl-snow-system">Krendl</a>&#xa0;(tough to clean up)</li><li>crushed limestone (increasingly popular out West)</li><li>ice shavings from ice blocks</li><li>snow from the machines that ski slopes use (extremely heavy)</li></ul><p>"The past couple of years Hallmark's really liked the look of the foam," said Benning, who often works on four and five Hallmark movies back to back. A snow budget might run a Christmas production about $50,000, he said.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Then there's the snow needed for actor close-ups. Sometimes, that means soapy bubbles.</p><p>Oliver said he was shooting a scene with Candace Cameron Bure that was supposed to be during a blizzard. So he used a machine that blew soapy bubbles into the air that looked like snow during close-up shots. "He hair was literally concrete," said Oliver. "And she had soap in her mouth."</p><p>Plus, because of the noise that the machine made, the actress had to reshoot her dialogue later "with the same emotion and cadence," he said. Oliver has a way of helping his actors deal: stops at the <a href="http://shamefultikiroom.com/">Shameful Tiki Room</a> bar in Vancouver.</p><h2>Christmas future</h2><p>As Hallmark pushes its original output to the limit, the question will become, how do you not run out of ideas?</p><p>One way to keep things moving is by doing sequels: <a href="http://www.hallmarkmoviesandmysteries.com/finding-father-christmas">"Finding Father Christmas"</a> in 2016 has led to this year's <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt6958760/">"Engaging Father Christmas</a>" (and eventually "Marrying Father Christmas").</p><p>"My biggest challenge is finding good scripts and good writers," Abbot added. To help, <a href="http://www.hallmarkchannel.com/hallmark-publishing/write-for-us">the company has launched a book division that will serve as something of a farm team for future movies</a>.</p><p>Meanwhile, programming chief Vicary said she's already talking to her team about projects for Christmas 2018.</p><p>For his part, Oliver said he's often wondered if he'll ever end up Christmas'd out. But then he gets together with his family and gets right back into the spirit.<br><br>"I always have this huge meltdown on Christmas Eve," he said. "But I love it. It's really about the core idea of people getting together.
