<img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/5e540819fee23d1e644a7ac3-1357/jayson%20tatum.jpg" alt="jayson tatum" /><p class="source"><span>Nick Wass/AP Images</span></p><p class="caption">Jayson Tatum.</p><ul class="summary-list"><li>Third-year Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum is on a scoring tear that has gotten the NBA's attention.</li><li>On Sunday, Tatum scored 41 points, dueling with LeBron James and Anthony Davis, in a down-to-the-wire loss to the Los Angeles Lakers that drew praise from James.</li><li>The Celtics have been viewed as pseudo-contenders all season, but if Tatum can sustain his current pace, he may give the Celtics a No. 1 scoring option that could elevate them in the postseason.</li><li><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/?hprecirc-bullet">Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories</a>.</li></ul><p>Seemingly out of nowhere, Boston Celtics' third-year forward Jayson Tatum has made the leap from promising young player to full-blown star.</p><p>The 21-year-old is averaging 29 points on 48% shooting, 46% from three, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, and 8 free-throw attempts per game in February.</p><p>Just before the All-Star break, before attending his first All-Star Game, Tatum out-dueled Kawhi Leonard and the LA Clippers in double-overtime, scoring 39 points on 14-of-23 shooting, with 9 rebounds. </p><p>On Sunday, Tatum went toe-to-toe with LeBron James and Anthony Davis, scoring 41 points on 12-of-20 shooting in down-to-the-wire, losing effort against the Los Angeles Lakers. While James hit a go-ahead jumper to put the Lakers up for good with 30 seconds to play, Tatum's dominance on Sunday remained the biggest takeaway from the game.</p><p>"Tatum has reached a new height, man," Celtics guard-forward Jaylen Brown said on Sunday (<a href="https://theathletic.com/1629815/2020/02/23/jayson-tatum-superstar-status-boston-celtics/">via The Athletic's Jay King)</a>. "Superstar level."</p><p>"The kid is special," James said after the game. "Obviously, that's the reason, first-time All-Star. He's been special all year ... He was special all night."</p><p>James is no stranger to Tatum's talent. The two went head-to-head in the 2018 Eastern Conference Finals, Tatum's rookie year, with Tatum even getting the best of James on a Game 7 poster dunk. The Cleveland Cavaliers, however, advanced to the Finals.</p><p>James drafted Tatum to his All-Star team this year.</p><p>After Sunday's win, James commemorated their battle with an Instagram post, calling Tatum an "absolute problem."</p><p>Tatum's recent eruption has been a long-anticipated development, but one that doesn't come easily. After a promising rookie year that saw him make the All-Rookie First Team, Tatum didn't make the leap many expected last year, stagnating while a promising Celtics team failed to reach their potential.</p><p>This season, Tatum has raised his scoring average by over seven points per game (15.7 to 22.9), and while his overall efficiency is down (likely due to volume), his shot selection has improved and he's getting to the free-throw line more frequently.</p><p>Several times during Sunday's game, ESPN/ABC analysts Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson remarked that Tatum's ball-handling was significantly tighter and stronger. He's increasingly developed the tools to be a go-to scorer.</p><p>To slow Tatum down, the Lakers began sending double-teams at him, forcing him to give up the ball. It's essentially a sign of respect from a defense - conceding baskets to other players rather than letting one person beat them over and over.</p><p>"I thought obviously he saw some run-and-jumps that he hasn't seen before," Celtics head coach Stevens said after the game of the Lakers' double-teams. "So that's good practice and good to know that we've got to look at that. We should be able to take advantage of that a little bit better than we did."</p><p>Tatum is just getting a handle on being a go-to scorer. As Stevens noted, he will get more practice with having to pass out of double-teams, either setting up his teammates better or finding a way to get the ball again in space.</p><p>Tatum won't keep up this efficiency, but if the strides he's taken keep up through the remainder of the season, the Celtics suddenly jump a level with him. The Celtics own the NBA's fifth-best offense and third-best defense. For the season, they've outscored teams by 10.8 points per 100 possessions with Tatum on the floor - a rate that rivals the league-leading Milwaukee Bucks if it were sustained.</p><p>The Celtics are a little short on depth and size. 21-year-old Celtics star Jayson Tatum is dominating after 'reaching a new height' and earning praise from LeBron James

Elizabeth Warren, Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and the city councils of both New York City and Seattle have all spoken out against <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/amazon">Amazon</a> this year.</strong></li><li><strong>Elected officials have criticized Amazon on everything from <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/amazon-hq2">HQ2</a> to employee pay.</strong></li><li><strong>The criticisms haven't been shown to affect business for the <keyword id="6354851" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="retail">retail</keyword> and tech giant, but that doesn't mean it's a net positive.</strong></li></ul><p><a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/stocks/amzn-stock">Amazon</a>'s growing power and influence did not go unchecked in 2018.</p><p>An increasing number of elected officials criticized Amazon on topics ranging from HQ2 to employee pay, leading to feuds between them and the company. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-attacks-amazon-over-usps-deal-threatens-business-2018-7">President Donald Trump</a>, Sen. Bernie Sanders, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and the city councils of both New York City and Seattle all spoke out against Amazon this year, though they addressed different topics.</p><p>Amazon has fought back with varying degrees of intensity.</p><h2>The Seattle City Council and the head tax</h2><p>Toward the beginning of the year was <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-second-headquarters-project-impacts-seattle-2018-6">Amazon's spat with Seattle's city council</a>.</p><p>In May, the council voted for a new tax on large employers in the city. It would have been an annual tax of about $275 for each full-time employee, and it was expected to take effect later this year. The so-called head tax was meant to raise millions in city funds to help fight homelessness in Seattle.</p><p>Amazon was a vocal critic of the tax and said it would halt construction on two towers in the city center if it went through.</p><p>"We are disappointed by today's city council decision to introduce a tax on jobs," Amazon vice president Drew Herdener<span> </span><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-seattle-fight-shows-hq2-importance-2018-5">said in a statement</a><span> </span>after the vote to implement the head tax passed in May. "While we have resumed construction planning for Block 18, we remain very apprehensive about the future created by the council's hostile approach and rhetoric toward larger businesses, which forces us to question our growth here."</p><p>In June, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-second-headquarters-project-impacts-seattle-2018-6">the council voted to repeal the tax</a> before it ever went into effect.</p><h2>Sanders and employee pay</h2><p>Then, there was the months-long feud between the company and Sanders.</p><p>"While Jeff Bezos' wealth has increased $260 million every single day this year, he continues to pay many Amazon employees wages so low that they're forced to depend on taxpayer-funded programs such as food stamps, Medicaid and public housing to survive,"<span> </span><a href="https://twitter.com/SenSanders/status/1033000574478950401">Sanders tweeted</a> in August.</p><p>As Sanders' attacks escalated, Amazon responded. The retailer<span> </span><a href="https://blog.aboutamazon.com/company-news/response-to-senator-sanders?utm_source=social&amp;utm_medium=tw&amp;utm_campaign=wkplc&amp;utm_term=amznews&amp;utm_content=sanders&amp;linkId=56163301&amp;tag=bisafetynet2-20">published a blog post on its website</a><span> </span>titled "Response to Senator Sanders," calling<span> </span><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-bernie-sanders-worker-pay-food-stamps-claims-2018-8">Sen. Bernie Sanders' claims about the company</a><span> </span>"inaccurate and misleading."</p><p>The post went on to tout the company's pay and benefits, as well as the working conditions in its warehouses - areas that Sanders has repeatedly criticized.</p><p>Then, in October, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-raises-minimum-wage-to-15-dollars-2018-10">Amazon announced it would bump up its starting pay</a> to $15 an hour for all of its workers making less than that.</p><p>"We listened to our critics, thought hard about what we wanted to do, and decided we want to lead," Jeff Bezos, Amazon's CEO, said in a statement. "We're excited about this change and encourage our competitors and other large employers to join us."</p><p>The feud continues, as both Sanders and Warren sent a letter to Amazon later in October asking the company to explain the "potentially illegal" activity showcased in a video about unions that the company reportedly shows to management, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bernie-sanders-elizabeth-warren-send-amazon-letter-over-union-video-2018-10">the Washington Post reported</a>.</p><h2>HQ2 fallout</h2><p>One of the most rollercoaster events of the year was when Amazon staged a contest to decide where to place its second headquarters, which it calls HQ2. </p><p>The contest culminated in <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-announces-hq2-new-york-virginia-2018-11">Amazon choosing the two places</a> that were arguably the most likely choices all along: Northern Virginia and Queens, New York.</p><p>New York politicians were immediately critical.</p><p>"Amazon is a billion-dollar company," <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/alexandria-ocasio-cortez-and-other-nyc-democrats-slam-amazon-hq2-2018-11">Ocasio-Cortez tweeted.</a> "The idea that it will receive hundreds of millions of dollars in tax breaks at a time when our subway is crumbling and our communities need MORE investment, not less, is extremely concerning to residents here."</p><p>"Offering massive corporate welfare from scarce public resources to one of the wealthiest corporations in the world at a time of great need in our state is just wrong," New York City Council member Jimmy Van Bramer and state Sen. Michael Gianari said in <a href="https://twitter.com/JimmyVanBramer/status/1061663832186277888">joint statement.</a></p><p>Amazon showed up for <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/nyc-city-council-criticizes-amazon-hq2-deal-oversight-2018-12">a fiery city council hearing</a>, where it - along with New York City's Economic Development Corporation - was peppered with questions ranging from how the deal circumvented the council, what Amazon will do for the city, how it will impact quality of life, and why <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-hq2-helipad-demand-slammed-by-city-council-2018-12">Amazon needs a helicopter pad</a>. </p><p>"We are still in the very early stages of this process and intend to be an active participant in the issues facing the community and make community investments that benefit New York City residents," Amazon's vice president of public policy, Brian Huseman, said in opening remarks at the hearing.</p><p>"Most importantly, we are here to listen and learn. Shippers will also be able to rate truckers in the coming weeks.</li><li>During the two-month pilot period, Uber Freight amassed more than 10,000 reviews from truck drivers.</li><li>That could help solve the pervasive issue of unpaid detention time, in which <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/truckers">truckers</a> lose $1.3 billion annually waiting at warehouses for loads.</li></ul><p>Truck driver Bill Hieatt spends hours nearly every day at work not getting paid.</p><p>"At some of these companies, it's like being an indentured servant," Hieatt, who has been a trucker for 20 years, told Business Insider.</p><p>Truckers such as Hieatt are expected to spend hours at warehouses waiting for their shipments to load or unload. Warehouses often do not have their shipments ready for truckers, even when they're on time, and that results in truck drivers being "detained."</p><p>Those shippers, which might include small businesses and major retailers, should load or unload in a two-hour window in accordance with <a href="https://www.tafs.com/detention-battle-in-trucking-industry/">industry standards</a>. After that, shippers are expected pay an hourly rate for every hour that a truck driver is detained at a warehouse.</p><p>Except they usually don't. According to <a href="https://www.dat.com/resources/white-papers/detention-survey-carriers">a survey</a>, administered by the freight marketplace <a href="https://www.dat.com/resources/white-papers/detention-survey-carriers">DAT Solutions</a>, of drivers from 257 trucking companies, only 3% said they receive detention pay for at least 90% of their claims to the shippers.</p><p>"Detention time is nonexistent most of the times," Hieatt said.</p><p><em><strong>Read more</strong>: <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/grocery-stores-hospitals-gas-stations-would-suffer-without-truckers-2019-1" data-analytics-position="5">Grocery stores would run out of food in 3 days if long-haul truckers stopped working</a></em></p><p>Losing out on that pay is critical for truckers because they're usually paid per mile. All told, truck drivers lose $1.1 billion to $1.3 billion in pay every year because of detention, according to <a href="https://www.oig.dot.gov/library-item/36237">a 2018 study</a> by the Department of <keyword id="34991" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="transportation">Transportation</keyword>.</p><h2>A new feature from Uber Freight could help combat that</h2><p>Uber Freight, which launched <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/uber-to-launch-uberfreight-for-long-haul-trucking-2016-10">in late 2016</a>, matches shippers and truckers through an online marketplace. Typically truckers have to work through freight brokers, who take a commission of 15% to 20% for the shipment.</p><p>On Thursday, Uber Freight announced that truck drivers using its app can rate the retailers and warehouses they work with. "When they're at a facility, they want to be treated with respect."</p><p>Allowing truckers to rate facilities will promote "transparent and collaborative environment" in transportation, Le added. It's a matter of fairness," <a href="https://www.dat.com/blog/post/detention-is-killing-us-say-carriers?device=pi2324=3pi2309=2">said Don Thornton</a>, a senior vice president at <a href="https://www.dat.com/company">DAT Solutions</a>. "Many shippers and receivers are lax about their dock operations, but it's the carriers and drivers who are forced to pay for that inefficiency."</p><p>Shippers will be able to rate truck drivers in the coming weeks. Anheuser-Busch, Land O'Lakes, Niagara Bottling, Colgate-Palmolive, and other retailers are all active users of Uber Freight, the company told Business Insider.</p><h2>Nixing detention times is good for people and for businesses</h2><p>Uber Freight is one of many startups in the trucking community that's working to eliminate the middleman in freight brokerage - such as Transfix, Convoy, and Next Trucking. The founders of those companies have previously told Business Insider that automated freight brokerage can also help benefit truckers.</p><p>But doing right by truck drivers isn't just good for the 1.8 million men and women who haul freight for a living. <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/truck-driver-shortage-staffing-industry-problems-2018-9">As a truck-driver shortage</a> descends upon the US, it's becoming necessary for retailers to ensure that truckers are willing to work with them.</p><p><em><strong>Read more:</strong> <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trucking-shortage-eld-mandate-cdl-truck-driver-salary-2018-6">Truck drivers' salaries are experiencing an 'unprecedented' jump, but it's not enough to end the driver shortage that's making everything more expensive</a></em></p><p>The van-load-to-truck ratio peaked last year, <a href="https://www.dat.com/industry-trends/trendlines/van/demand-and-capacity">according to DAT Solutions</a>. In June 2018, there were 9.9 loads for every available truck. That ratio was 5.6 loads-to-truck in June 2017 and 2.9 the previous June.</p><p><a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/category/transfix">Transfix</a> CEO Drew McElroy said shortage of capacity is forcing companies to drastically reconsider how they treat their drivers. If retailers don't change their behavior, McElroy said no one would be around to move their goods.</p><p>"There are places that trucking companies will not pick up from - I don't care if you pay me twice what the guy across the street is paying me, I'm just not going there," McElroy <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/truck-driver-shortage-staffing-industry-problems-2018-9">told Business Insider last fall</a>. Uber Freight is helping combat a $1.3 billion problem that the trucking industry has ignored for years

In order to regain control of the House, they must <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2018/06/05/politics/california-primary-2018/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">win back</a> 23 seats, which is sure to be challenging, despite promising signs so far.  </p><p>Here are the five big takeaways from this week's elections:</p><h2><strong>Democrats prevailed in California's open primary system</strong></h2><p>In California's "top-two" system for primaries, the two candidates who receive the first and second highest numbers of votes advance to the general election regardless of party affiliation.</p><p>Both political parties were concerned about being "locked out" of several key congressional races, with no one from their party on the ballot for the general. While California is a largely Democratic state, Democrats worried of being left off the general election ballot in key races in Orange County, a Republican stronghold. </p><p>While absentee ballots are still to be counted, it appears Democrats <a href="https://www.vox.com/2018/6/6/17433668/california-primary-house-democrat-avoid-locked-out" target="_blank" rel="noopener">will not</a> be locked out of any races, while there will be no Republican candidate running in the general for 11 congressional races. One of the races in which there will be no GOP candidate is Sen. Dianne Feinstein's <a href="http://thehill.com/homenews/campaign/390879-feinstein-to-face-fellow-dem-in-november" target="_blank" rel="noopener">re-election bid.</a> Feinstein, a formidable five-term senator beloved by voters, will face a progressive challenger in former California state senate president Kevin De Léon.  </p><p>While Democratic candidates have secured a spot on the ballot in every race, it'll be a tough and expensive road ahead to flip heavily Republican districts <a href="https://www.ocregister.com/2018/06/05/o-c-congressional-races-democrats-fight-to-make-november-ballot-in-4-gop-held-districts-targeted-by-national-parties/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in Orange County</a> won by President Donald Trump.</p><h2><strong>It was a banner night for female candidates</strong></h2><p>Trump's election inspired <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/first-read/huge-2018-story-more-500-women-are-running-major-office-n841916" target="_blank" rel="noopener">record numbers</a> of women to run for federal and statewide office, most of whom are running as Democrats. Those who had primaries on Tuesday were largely successful. </p><p>The <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/politics-news/women-candidates-clean-biggest-primary-night-2018-n880521" target="_blank" rel="noopener">results</a> so far show that out of 117 federal and statewide primary contests with one or more female candidate, 59 primaries were definitively won by women, 34 were lost, and 18 female candidates are trailing in California races that have not yet been called, as California doesn't count absentee ballots until after the day of the election. </p><p>Some of these winning women could make history if they win their general election contests.</p><p><a href="https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/6/6/17433918/new-mexico-deb-haaland-first-native-american-woman-elected-congress" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Deb Haaland</a>, who secured the democratic nomination for congress in New Mexico's first congressional district, will likely be the first-ever Native-American woman to serve in Congress, as her district is a safe seat for Democrats.</p><p>Also in New Mexico, gubernatorial nominee <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2018/live-updates/midterms/live-primary-election-results/lujan-grisham-wins-democratic-nomination-for-governor-of-new-mexico/?utm_term=.7e6d7f7f8ad7" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Michelle Lujan Grisham</a> could be the country's first Democratic Latina governor, and GOP congresswoman Kristi Noem is poised to become South Dakota's first female governor after winning a bitter primary contest. They are among four female gubernatorial candidates advancing to the general across the country. </p><h2><strong>In New Jersey, the GOP could lose control of key House seats</strong></h2><p>Despite New Jersey being a relatively blue state, Republicans have managed to maintain control of the governorship for Chris Christie's two terms and five House seats out of New Jersey's 12. But last year, they lost the governorship to Democrat Phil Murphy, and could be <a href="https://www.vox.com/2018/6/6/17427114/primary-elections-2018-results-new-jersey-alabama-new-mexico" target="_blank" rel="noopener">poised to lose </a>three House seats.</p><p>Long-term Republican incumbents Frank LoBiondo in the 2nd District and Rodney Frelinghyusen in the 11th both served 24 years each in the House before deciding to not to run for re-election, making those seats attainable for Democrats for the first time in years.</p><p>Strong Democratic candidates backed by the party won their primaries in each district - long-time state senator Jeff Van Drew in the 2nd, and former Navy pilot and federal prosecutor Mikie Sherill in the 11th.</p><p>In New Jersey's 7th District, won by Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton in 2016, Republican incumbent Leonard Lance will face a tough general election against former Obama staffer Tom Malinowski.</p><h2><strong>Democrats flipped another seat in a special election</strong></h2><p>In Missouri's 17th state senate district, two-term state representative <a href="http://www.kansascity.com/news/politics-government/article212508709.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lauren Arthur</a> beat her Republican opponent by a 19-point landslide in a district Trump won by five points. </p><p>Arthur's election marks the <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1C2MVeM2K7WgqmJw5RCQbWyTo2u73CX1pI8zw_G-7BJo/edit#gid=546409300" target="_blank" rel="noopener">42nd state legislative seat</a> flipped from Republican to Democratic control since Trump's election, in addition to a governorship and two congressional seats that flipped to Democrats in special elections. In that same time, only seven seats at any level have gone from Democratic to Republican. </p><h2>GOP voters punished anti-Trump Republicans</h2><p>For Republican politicians, openly disavowing Trump has consequences.</p><p><a href="https://www.politico.com/story/2018/06/05/alabama-primary-roby-runoff-628461" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Rep. Martha Roby,</a> a five-term congresswoman from Alabama, is paying the political price of withdrawing her support for Trump in 2016 after the release of the "Access Hollywood" tape in which he seemingly bragged about assaulting women.</p><p>After securing just 38% of the vote, below the 50% threshold required to automatically advance to the general, Roby will enter a run-off against fellow GOP candidate Bobby Bright in July. </p><p>In New Jersey, GOP candidate <a href="http://observer.com/2018/06/john-mccann-wins-gop-primary-new-jersey-5th-district/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Steve Lonegan,</a> an activist who harshly criticized Trump in 2016, lost the Republican primary in the 5th Congressional District after his opponent used footage of Trump calling Lonegan a "loser" in his campaign ads. </p>    <div class="margin-top">        <h3>NOW WATCH: <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/economist-weighted-voting-could-help-save-us-democracy-2018-5">This top economist has a radical plan to change the way Americans vote</a></h3>        <div>            <iframe class="bijwplayerclass" data-player="jwplayer" src="https://content.jwplatform.com/players/tdQolVXA-CEZHWCBG.html" width="100%" height="100%" frameborder="0" scrolling="auto" style="margin:0px;" allowfullscreen=""></iframe><script>function receiveMessage(event){ console.log(event.data.fullscreen); Android.fullscreen(event.data.fullscreen); }window.addEventListener("message", receiveMessage, false);</script>        </div>    </div>

This week's primaries have Democrats optimistic about a 'blue wave' in the midterms

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55eef5c49dd7cc15008b8bce-1028-771/bill%20belichick.jpg" alt="bill belichick" data-mce-source="Christian Petersen/Getty"><p class="source"><span>Christian Petersen/Getty</span></p><p class="caption">Bill Belichick seems like the mastermind behind the Patriots' reported systematic cheating.</p></img></div><p></p></div></div>When the NFL came down hard on the New England Patriots over the Deflategate scandal, many people mentioned the Patriots' 2007 "Spygate" scandal as one of the reasons for the extensive punishment.<p><a href="http://espn.go.com/espn/otl/story/_/id/13533995/split-nfl-new-england-patriots-apart">According to a bombshell report from ESPN's "Outside the Lines,"</a>&#xa0;the&#xa0;Spygate scandal, in which they were caught videotaping opponents' defensive signals, is perhaps the primary reason the NFL tried to nail them for Deflategate.</p><p>The report details Spygate as we've never heard it, painting a picture of systematic cheating&#xa0;that went way further and looks way worse for the Patriots than people previously realized.</p><p>First, the Patriots had a detailed, efficient system for finding out opponents' plays.&#xa0;ESPN's&#xa0;Don Van Natta Jr. and Seth Wickersham describe a scene in Belichick's office before the season-opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers:</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"[A backup quarterback named John]&#xa0;Friesz was told that the Patriots had a tape of the Bucs' signals. He was instructed to memorize them, and during the game, to watch Bucs defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin and tell [offensive coordinator Charlie] Weis the defensive play, which Weis would relay over the radio headset system to quarterback Drew Bledsoe."</p><p>Van Natta Jr. and Wickersham report that although the Patriots lost that game, they realized a "schematic" edge over other teams. They "streamlined the system," finding a more efficient way to note the plays and relay the information, cutting out the quarterbacks, with only a few people, including Belichick involved.</p><p>Soon, advanced scouts would be sent to the games of upcoming Patriots' opponents to film the play signals. The scouts would go undercover as media members, with media credentials listed under "Patriots TV" or "Kraft Productions" and were prepared with excuses of what to say they were filming if security asked them. According to Van Natta Jr. and Wickersham, "Each video sequence would usually include three shots: the down and distance, the signal, and, as an in-house joke, a tight shot of a cheerleader's top or skirt."</p><p>The tapes would then go to a Belichick confidant named Ernie Adams, an "amateur historian of pro football," who would have the tapes edited and match the notes of the play calls and signals to the action on the field.</p><p>The Patriots began creating a library of videotapes from teams all across the league. A former Patriots assistant coach told ESPN, "It got out of control."</p><p>According to the report, the system grew to the point that the Patriots would add players cut from upcoming opponents to look at Adams' tapes and judge their effectiveness.</p><p>But wait, there's more!</p><p>The effectiveness of the spying is reportedly debated amongst former Patriots staffers, some of whom say Adams wasn't good at his job.</p><p>Other methods of cheating reportedly include:</p><ul><li>Sending low-level Patriots employees to sneak into the visiting locker room during pre-game warm-ups and steal the play sheet. Van Natta Jr. and Wickersham note, "The practice became so notorious that some coaches put out fake play sheets for the Patriots to swipe."</li><li>Sending employees through the visiting team's hotel to try to swipe playbooks and scouting reports.</li><li>"Scrambling and jamming" opponent radio headsets to interfere with opponent communication.</li></ul><p><a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/peyton-manning-patriots-visiting-locker-room-bugged-2015-8">Peyton Manning is reportedly paranoid about the Patriots'</a> methods of cheating, leaving the locker room to discuss schemes with coaches in case the locker room was bugged.</p><p>Still, the spying was reportedly the biggest deal. The entire operation came to a head when Eric&#xa0;Mangini, coach of the New York Jets and a former Patriots coach, knew the Patriots were filming teams. He ordered security to be on a alert, and they caught a Patriots employee taping the Jets.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/55eef5f19dd7cc1a008b8b20-2668-2001/rtr2xdlc.jpg" alt="Roger Goodell and Robert Kraft" data-mce-source="Jeff Haynes/Reuters"><p class="source"><span>Jeff Haynes/Reuters</span></p><p class="caption">Roger Goodell and Robert Kraft are close friends.</p></img></div><p></p></div></div><p>Roger Goodell, then only 18 months into his role as commissioner, fined Bill Belichick $500,000 and the Patriots $250,000 and docked the team a first-round pick before investigators ever even went to Foxborough to look for the tapes. There, investigators found "a room accessible only to Belichick and a few others" a "library of scouting material containing videotapes of opponents' signals, with detailed notes matching signals to plays for many teams going back seven seasons."</p><p>However, Van Natta Jr. and&#xa0;Wickersham report,&#xa0;"almost as quickly as the tapes and notes were found, they were destroyed, on Goodell's orders: League executives stomped the tapes into pieces and shredded the papers inside a Gillette Stadium conference room."</p><p>The report says the Patriots never told the league how many games they filmed and offered up only eight tapes, and the league never asked.</p><p>Goodell was accused by some owners of sweeping the issue under the rug and helping out his close friend, Patriots owner Robert Kraft. Belichick said he had simply misinterpreted a rule prohibiting the taping of other teams' play signals. Instead, the report paints a picture about why league insists&#xa0;on dragging out Deflategate - its a "make-up call" for side-stepping the severity of Spygate, if the ESPN report is accurate.</p><p class="embed-spacer">If the details are all true, it looks damning for both sides, but particularly the Patriots. Bombshell ESPN report says Patriots' Spygate scandal was way worse than people realized

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/577f9c98dd0895c3728b4695-1703/team usa 2015 winners.jpg" alt="Team USA 2015 winners.JPG" data-mce-source="Jeff Appel" data-link="http://broadbandcapital.com/" /><p class="source"><span><a href="http://broadbandcapital.com/">Jeff Appel</a></span></p><p class="caption">Last year's Team USA champions: Jeff Appel (L) and Bill Ackman (R)</p></div><p></p></div></div>Some of the biggest names in finance from both sides of the Atlantic will face off against each other at tennis in London this weekend.</p><p>The Wimbledon finals may be making all the headlines, but the second annual Finance Cup will also been taking place at the prestigious Queens Club in west London.</p><p>Team Europe are looking for revenge after their 8-1 defeat to the Team USA in New York last year.</p><p>Organised by American Jeff Appel and Swede David Anving, the cup brings together some of the top tennis players from Wall Street and Europe's financial sector and has become one of the best networking opportunities in business.</p><p>The 41-person tournament mixes high-flying kings of finance such as hedge fund billionaire Bill Ackman with young up and comers from the City and Wall Street. Players are recruited by Appel and Anving.</p><p><span>Make no mistake, this is no casual meetup between bankers to hit a ball around - many of these players have ATP rankings, have beaten top pros, and were among the best at their colleges and universities.</span></p><p>Some of the biggest companies in finance are represented, including Goldman Sachs by its Co-Head of Global Securities Pablo Salame and <span>Head of the European Private Credit Group James Reynolds, JP Morgan Executive Director Alfredo Caturano, HSBC Nordic Private Banking head Tobias Hildebrand, and of course Perishing Square Capital billionaire Bill Ackman.</span></p><p>The competition will take place over three rounds in a single day, with four doubles matches in each round spread over the Open, Mid-Level and Senior categories.</p><p>BI caught up with the cofounders to hear what the tournament is all about.</p><h2>'T<span>he initial idea was friends just getting together'</span></h2><p>It all started with a Business Insider article from two years ago, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/wall-street-tennis-community-2014-10?IR=T" target="_blank">when Appel took BI on a tour of Wall Street's tennis culture on Randall Island every Sunday</a>.</p><p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"><img src="https://static-ssl.businessinsider.com/image/577f9c98dd0895c3728b4696-414/jeff appel david anving.jpeg" alt="jeff appel david anving" data-mce-source="Harry Cicma" data-link="https://twitter.com/HarryCicma?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor" /><p class="source"><span><a href="https://twitter.com/HarryCicma?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor">Harry Cicma</a></span></p><p class="caption">Team Wall Street's Jeff Appel (L) and Team Europe's David Anving at Queens to practice before the tournament.</p></div><p></p></div></div>Anving, who had been the captain of the tennis team at the University of Michigan, saw the report and sent Appel a blind email suggesting they meet up - which they did in Paris, taking in the French Open.</p><p>Soon afterwards, the idea of the tournament took hold and Anving bought a European team to New York. Appel recalls that he and Anving "quickly became kindred souls. David and I wanted to create something that was altruistic. We want to help young people who have given so much to tennis."</p><p>Anving says: "For us, the initial idea was friends just getting together, but since the first year we've had a lot of young kids who are maybe in college now and want to get into Wall Street or the City of London to work. So at a personal level that gives me the most satisfaction. And it's a big team - there's 40 people in total so it's great for networking."</p><p>Anving, a partner at Global Asset Management Capital, found 3 top employees through the Cup's co-founder. This seems to be Appel's main goal for the tournament. He says: "A lot of great friendships and business relationships have come out of this. We want to help other people and hope this will be a tradition that goes on for many years."</p><p>Anving adds: "It's great to meet people from both the US and all over Europe. Even if you've never met them before you tend to have common friends and there's a sense of community."</p><h2>'The Mayor of New York Tennis'</h2><p>Appel - known as the "Mayor of New York Tennis" and ranked no.12 in the USTA 45s Singles category - can also be credited with getting Bill Ackman back into the game after sending him his own blind email. "I guess because both require an intense amount of hard work and discipline. A lot of these guys were really good in college and just want to keep that intensity up. [Finance] jobs are a lot like tennis really, you look at traders where it can be so up and down, and I think that mentality for tennis comes in very helpful."</p><p>Appel knows that Team Wall Street needs to stay on its toes this weekend, saying: "David aggressively recruited for Team Europe this year and did a great job. We're looking forward to great matches and know that the change to grass courts will be an extra challenge."</p><p>Anving is confident, saying: "Our team is much better than it was last year… but so is Team USA.
