Microblogging platform Twitter has "withheld" the accounts of Punjabi singer JazzyB, hip-hop artist L-Fresh the Lion and two others in response to a legal demand in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>, even as it draws flak over delay in complying with the <keyword id="649076" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="new-IT-rules">new IT rules</keyword> in the country. According to an information on Lumen database, Twitter received legal request from the Indian government on June 6 for actioning four accounts, including that of JazzyB. <br /><br />Requests received by Twitter for withholding content are published on Lumen database - an independent research project studying cease and desist letters concerning online content. <br /><br />Users checking <keyword id="789829" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jazzy-B">Jazzy B</keyword>'s account are shown a message saying "account has been withheld in India in response to a legal demand". <br /><br />When contacted, a Twitter spokesperson said when it receives a valid legal request, it reviews it under both the <keyword id="3877745" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="twitter-rules">Twitter Rules</keyword> and local law. <br /><br />"If the content violates Twitter Rules, the content will be removed from the service. If it is determined to be illegal in a particular jurisdiction, but not in violation of the Twitter Rules, we may withhold access to the content in India only," the spokesperson added. <br /><br />The spokesperson noted that in all cases, it notifies the account holder directly so that they're aware that the company has received a legal order pertaining to the account. <br /><br />"We notify the user(s) by sending a message to the e-mail address associated with the account(s), if available... Twitter is committed to the principles of openness, transparency, details of the requests to withhold content have been published on Lumen," the spokesperson said. <br /><br />Reports suggest that Jazzy B had frequently tweeted in support of farmers' protests. <br /><br />Earlier this year, more than 500 accounts were suspended and access to hundreds of others in India blocked after the government ordered the microblogging platform to restrain the spread of misinformation and inflammatory content related to farmers' protests. <br /><br />Over the past many months, Twitter has been embroiled in a number of issues. Twitter had drawn flak after it marked several tweets by ruling BJP leaders on an alleged strategy document of the Opposition to target the government over <keyword id="8764262" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="covid">COVID</keyword> as containing 'manipulated media', triggering a sharp rebuke from the government. <br /><br />The row over Twitter's handling of certain messages had recently blown up into all-out war of words between the Centre and the social media platform. <br /><br />Last week, the government issued a notice to Twitter giving it one last chance to "immediately" comply with the new IT rules and warned that failure to adhere to the norms will lead to the platform losing exemption from liability under the IT Act. <br /><br />Twitter has an estimated 1.75 crore users in India, as per data cited by the government recently. <br /><br />The new IT rules for social media companies that came into effect last month mandate large platforms like Facebook and Twitter to undertake greater due diligence and make these digital platforms more accountable and responsible for the content hosted by them. <br /><br />The rules also require significant social media intermediaries - providing services primarily in the nature of messaging - to enable identification of the "first originator" of the information that undermines the sovereignty of India, the security of the state, or public order. <br /><br /> The new IT rules require significant social media intermediaries - those with other 50 lakh users - to appoint a grievance officer, nodal officer and a chief compliance officer. These personnel are required to be resident in India. <br /><br />Under the new rules, social media companies will have to take down flagged content within 36 hours, and remove within 24 hours content that is flagged for nudity, pornography etc. <br /><br /> The Centre had said the new rules are designed to prevent abuse and misuse of platforms, and offer users a robust forum for grievance redressal. <br /><br />Non-compliance with the rules would result in these platforms losing their intermediary status that provides them immunity from liabilities over any third-party data hosted by them. "The Smithsonian Anthology of Hip-Hop and Rap" is set for release on August 20. It's split into nine discs, which will encapsulate four decades-worth of hip hop and rap into 129 songs. </p><p>In an announcement made by <a href="https://folkways.si.edu/smithsonian-anthology-of-hip-hop-and-rap-intl">Smithsonian Folkways Recordings</a>, the Smithsonian Insititute said that the goal of the anthology was to tell "the story of a defining era of <keyword id="6354530" type="CITY" weightage="60" keywordseo="music">music</keyword> 'of, by, and for the people.'" The article also described it as a "first-of-its-kind multimedia collection chronicling the growth of the music and culture from the parks of the Bronx to solidifying a reach that spans the globe."</p><p>This is the Smithsonian Folkway Recordings' third anthology, following "Anthology of American Folk Music" (1953) and "Jazz: The Smithsonian Anthology" (2011). </p><p>The anthology, which is a partnership between Smithsonian Folkway Recordings and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, is paired with a 300-page book, designed by Cey Adams, the founding creative director of Def Jam Recordings. The book will feature essays and photos. The entire project centers on the evolution of rap and hip hop. </p><p>Those involved in the selection and curation process were: rappers MC Lyte and Chuck D; the artist Questlove; scholars Jeff Chang and Mark Anthony Neal; and early Def Jam executives Bill Adler and Bill Stephney.</p><p>The anthology features monumental songs in hip-hop from giants like NWA, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, Sugarhill Gang, Public Enemy, Salt-N-Pepa, and more. It captures an excellent mix of new and old - and for some, it's also a solid mix of familiar and unfamiliar tracks. </p><p>While the Bronx is known as the birthplace of hip-hop, as this anthology indicates, some argue that "Rapper's Delight" by The Sugarhill Gang is the pioneering hip-hop song (Disc 1, Track 2), it's also important to note that some point to <a href="https://www.rockhall.com/story-gil-scott-heron">Gil Scott-Heron</a> as the "Godfather of Rap." Though Heron preferred the label "bluesologist," his work has been referenced or sampled by industry giants like Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, and Common, and Queen Latifah. Adele was the odds-on favorite going into the 2017 Grammys, even if "25" and its smash hit feel like distant memories (the album was released in November 25 and was eligible for this year's awards because of the Grammys' weird timing rules). She's beloved across the world, technically impressive, charming all of the time, and almost impossible to hate.</p><p>But Adele's sweep felt like an affront to&#xa0;Beyoncé's "Lemonade," which had to settle for best urban contemporary album (an awkward phrasing that basically means best modern-sounding R&amp;B album). The Grammys chose a perfectly fine album with a huge hit over one that made history, which left the awards feeling more&#xa0;irrelevant than ever.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><h2>Black music has gotten shortchanged before</h2><p>As many critics have pointed out, the Grammys have an uneasy&#xa0;racial history. Only 10 black artists have ever won album of the year since it was first given in 1959, even though the entire history of rock and roll is derived from black music.</p><p>Craig Jenkins,&#xa0;New York magazine's music critic, said <a href="https://twitter.com/CraigSJ/status/831009870551859200" target="_blank">Kanye West was "right"</a> about the Grammys. West said after Beck's "Morning Phase" beat out&#xa0;<span>Beyoncé's self-titled album in 2015,&#xa0;"<span>At this point we tired of it, because what happens is when you keep on diminishing art and not respecting the craft and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats in music, you're disrespectful to inspiration." </span></span></p><p><span><span>Immediately after this year's awards, the singer Solange (<span>Beyoncé's sister) <a href="https://twitter.com/solangeknowles/status/831000797232001025" target="_blank">shared a note on Twitter</a> from Frank Ocean, who chose to sit out this year's Grammys, which was directed at Grammy producers. Ocean wrote:</span></span></span></p><p><span><span>The Grammys also have a history of not giving hip-hop - and anything remotely new or pioneering - its due. Will Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff won the very first Grammy rap award in 1989 for "Parents Just Don't Understand," but the category wasn't televised, leading them and other nominees to boycott the show.</span></span></p><h2><span><span>The Grammys are more conservative than they look</span></span></h2><p><span><span>Adele appeals to the conservative streak in the Grammys' voting body of industry pros, who strongly favor work that appeals across generations and harks back to older forms. Everyone from your mom to your five-year-old nephew knows the words to "Hello" and connects to it. Her style of soul&#xa0;music isn't breaking any molds. "Formation" may be a statement-making, forward-thinking masterpiece, but from its sonic to its politics,&#xa0;it challenges and alienates a certain segment of the US.</span></span></p><p><span><span>Ray Charles, Herbie Hancock, and Robert Plant, among many others, have only recently won their first album of the year trophies long after their music had become safe and all-pleasing. The Grammys seemingly finally caught up to David Bowie, who swept in his categories this year after long being denied any major prizes. That's how the Grammys work.</span></span></p><h2><span><span>In the end, sales matter</span></span></h2><p><span><span>There is another, simpler reason&#xa0;<span>Beyoncé was shut out of the biggest, cross-genre categories while Adele was coronated: sales. At a time when music is more vexed than ever about itself as a business and its future, Adele sold records at a rate unseen since the '90s. "25" sold more than nine&#xa0;million copies in the US alone, while&#xa0;<span>Beyoncé's "Lemonade" (her second-lowest-selling album to date) couldn't quite hit 2 million. </span></span></span></span></p><p><span><span><span><span>Perhaps more than ever, the Grammys may feel that rewarding a commercial juggernaut is in the awards' own best interest, even if it means shunning a piece of cultural history that even Adele herself agrees should have gotten its due. As Adele said Sunday night, after expressing her devotion to "Queen B" in her acceptance speeches, "What the f--- does she have to do to win album of the year?"</span></span></span></span></p><p>&#xa0;</p><p class="tagline">This is an opinion column. Why Adele really beat out Beyonce at the Grammys

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div>Victoria's Secret is under fire for a new ad campaign that features the slogan "The Perfect 'Body.'"</p>
<p>The slogan, which refers to the retailer's "Body" lingerie line, appears with images of Victoria's Secret angels on the company's website and in stores in the UK.</p>
<p>The ads have prompted a widespread backlash online and inspired the hashtag "<a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/iamperfect?f=realtime">#iamperfect</a>" on Twitter. </p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"There is a line between aspiration and thinspiration, and this campaign clearly oversteps the mark," columnist Sarah Vine writes in <a href="http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2815015/Offensive-cruel-irresponsible-don-t-want-daughter-advert-writes-SARAH-VINE.html?ito=social-facebook">The Daily Mail</a>.  "As for their use of the word 'perfect', it's not only offensive to the 99.9% of the female population who don't share the models' 'perfect' proportions, it's also deeply irresponsible, if not downright cruel."</span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">More than 15,000 people have signed a</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span><a href="http://www.change.org/p/victoriassecret-apologise-for-your-damaging-perfect-body-campaign-iamperfect">petition</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">calling on Victoria's Secret to apologize and terminate the campaign. </span></p>
<p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"Victoria's Secret's new advertisements play on women's insecurities and send out a damaging message" the petition says.</span></p>
