New Delhi, Legal doyen and veteran advocate Fali S <keyword id="20668460" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nariman" source="keywords">Nariman</keyword> died here on Wednesday at the age of 95. He was suffering from multiple ailments, including cardiac issues. Born on January 10, 1929, Nariman was enrolled as an advocate at the Bombay High Court in November 1950 and was designated a senior advocate in 1961. Nariman was born in Rangoon (now Yangon) to a well-off business executive. The Nariman family fled to India in the face of the Japanese invasion in 1942 when Fali was 12. He practised law for more than 70 years, initially in the Bombay High Court and since 1972, in the Supreme Court. Nariman was appointed as the additional solicitor general of India in May 1972. He resigned from the post a day after the imposition of Emergency on June 26, 1975. In his long and illustrious legal career, Nariman argued in several landmark cases, including the Bhopal gas tragedy case, TMA Pai case, Jayalalithaa disproportionate assets case and the famous case of the National Judicial Appointments Commission, which was struck down by the Supreme Court. Nariman, who was often referred to as the "Bhishma Pitamah" of the Indian judiciary, authored books, including "Before the Memory Fades", "The State of the Nation", "India's Legal System: Can it be Saved?" and "God Save the Hon'ble Supreme Court". Nariman received the Padma Bhushan in January 1991 and in 2007, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan. He was also nominated as a member of the Rajya Sabha in November 1999. Reacting to the news of his death, senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi took to X and wrote: "End of an era' #falinariman passes away, a living legend who will forever be in hearts and minds of those in law and public life. Above all his diverse achievements, he stuck to his principles unwaveringly and called a spade a spade, a quality shared by his brilliant son #Rohinton." Solicitor General <keyword id="20038814" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="tushar-mehta" source="keywords">Tushar Mehta</keyword> said not only the legal fraternity, but the country has lost a towering figure of intellect and wisdom. "The country has lost an epitome of what righteousness stood for. A doyen, paragon and a legend in his own lifetime has left us, leaving the jurisprudence enriched by his immense contribution. I have always learnt something new by merely appearing even against him," the law officer said in his message. Activist-lawyer <keyword id="20027334" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="prashant-bhushan" source="keywords">Prashant Bhushan</keyword> said Nariman's death was an enormous loss to the country. In a post on X, Bhushan wrote: "Very sad news. Eminent Jurist Fali S Nariman Passes Away. He was also regarded as the Bhishma Pitamah of the lawyer community. A great lawyer and close friend of our family. His passing away at this critical juncture is an enormous loss for our country." Fali Nariman's son, <keyword id="20668461" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="rohinton-nariman" source="keywords">Rohinton Nariman</keyword>, was a Supreme Court judge.

 She is also the second Chief Minister who died while holding power in India this year. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister <keyword id="427966" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Mufti-Mohammad-Sayeed">Mufti Mohammad Sayeed</keyword> passed away in January while he was running the first BJP-PDP coalition government in the state. 
 According to <keyword id="56368" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Apollo-Hospitals">Apollo Hospitals</keyword>, <keyword id="42104" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Jayalalithaa">Jayalalithaa</keyword> breathed her last at 11.30 pm last night. She had suffered a massive cardiac arrest the previous night. 
 
She had been in the hospital since September 2.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister <keyword id="519509" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="O-Pannerselvam">O Pannerselvam</keyword>, who assumed the top office after the passing away of incumbent and ruling <keyword id="41902" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="AIADMK">AIADMK</keyword> supremo <keyword id="42104" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jayalalithaa">Jayalalithaa</keyword> days ago, will chair the first meeting of his cabinet here tomorrow at the state secretariat. 
 
The meeting is set to begin at 11.30 am when a resolution was expected to be adopted condoling the demise of the four-time chief minister Jayalalithaa on 
 "<keyword id="653890" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tamil-Nadu-cabinet">Tamil Nadu Cabinet</keyword> meeting tomorrow at 11.30 am. Honourable Chief Minister O <keyword id="291784" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Panneerselvam">Panneerselvam</keyword> to chair the meet," AIADMK said in a tweet today. 
 
Jayalalithaa, 68, died after suffering a cardiac arrest at the Apollo Hospitals while undergoing treatment for ailments since Sept 22. 
 
The cabinet meeting comes against the backdrop of the allegation of main opposition DMK in the past more than two months that the government was "non-functional" 
 
PMK had on Dec 7 said that the government administration which was in a "limbo" in recent past should "start functioning now" with Panneerselvam at the helm.

After Jayalalithaa's demise, newly appointed Tamil Nadu CM to chair cabinet meeting tomorrow

Strongly backing Tamil Nadu's decades old two-language policy, the ruling AIADMK in the state on Monday rejected the Centre's three-language formula proposed in the new <keyword id="361871" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Education-Policy">National Education Policy</keyword> (NEP) 2020 and said there will be no deviation from the existing system. "The three-language formula in the NEP is painful and saddening. The Prime Minister (<keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword>) should reconsider the three-language policy," Palaniswami said. Taking strong exception to the proposal, he said in a statement the state has been following the two-language policy for several decades and that there will be no change in it. His assertion came amidst opposition demand, including from DMK, that the government should reject the three-language formula proposed in NEP and stick to its two-language policy. Incidentally, ahead of today's meeting he convened to discuss the matter with his senior cabinet colleagues, the Opposition bloc led by DMK wrote to the chief minister, asking him to adopt a Cabinet resolution against the new NEP. "Tamil Nadu will never allow the Centre's three- language formula. The state will continue with its dual language policy (of Tamil and English)," Palaniswami said. He discussed the matter with his colleagues--Deputy CM O Panneerselvam, Ministers for higher education and school education, K P Anbalagan and K A Sengottaiyan, respectively and others. The Centre should allow the states to implement their own policy on the subject, he said, adding there will be no change to the two-language formula which the state had adopted decades ago. Teaching up to class 5 in mother tongue or regional language and lowering the stakes of board exams are part of the sweeping reforms in the new NEP unveiled last week by the Centre. However, the proposals have found resistance from the DMK-led opposition in the state, with the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly, MK Stalin, dubbing it as an attempt to "impose" Hindi and Sankrit. The anti-Hindi movement of the 1960s taken forward by the DMK had struck an instant chord among the Tamil masses then and is believed to be one of the key reasons for the Dravidian party storming to power in the 1967 elections under the late CN Annadurai, unseating a Congress government in the state for the first time in post-independent India. Palaniswami further said the state has been maintaining a consistent stand and that for about 80 years, the people of Tamil Nadu had been firm on two language policy. Late chief ministers Annadurai, MG Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa were firmly against 'imposition' of Hindi. He also recalled the historic resolution brought in the Tamil Nadu Assembly by late Annadurai on January 23, 1968, which proposed to abolish the three language policy in all schools in the state, removing Hindi from the State syllabus but allowing only Tamil and English. Later, the AIADMK government led M G Ramachandran had in 1986 adopted an Assembly resolution asserting the two language policy. Former chief minister J Jayalalithaa too was firm on opposing Hindi on non-Hindi speaking states and in thwarting such efforts and wanted Tamil to be declared as an official language of the country, he said. Palaniswami pointed out he himself had written to the Prime Minister in June 2019 stressing on two-language policy. Besides, he had reiterated this in his Independence Day address last year and on various occasions during the debates in the state Assembly, he recalled. Meanwhile, the Opposition DMK led alliance in Tamil Nadu--comprising the Congress, MDMK, VCK, CPM, CPI and MMK, collectively wrote a letter to Palaniswami asking him to pass a resolution against the new NEP in the Tamil Nadu Cabinet meeting. Many clauses in the new policy are trying to impose "Hindi" and "Sanskrit" and are "trying to do away with Tamil from the system, and this is against federalism, women rights and social justice. It was also "imposing" vedic culture, besides being mum on reservation, it said. "The NEP should be opposed in the initial stages itself," the letter added. Later, Stalin, in a Facebook post, thanked Palaniswami for the government stand on the matter. The NEP, passed by the Union Cabinet last week, laid emphasis on the mother tongue/local and regional language which will now be the medium of instruction at least till Class 5, but preferably till Class 8 and beyond. Also, Sanskrit will be offered at all levels of school and higher education as an option for students, including in the three-language formula.

So far, the demigod has <a href="https://theprint.in/opinion/newsmaker-of-the-week/rajinikanth-not-apologising-for-periyar-remark-will-show-where-tamil-nadu-politics-is-headed/354350/">refused to apologise</a>. Rival Dravida Munnetra Kahagam (DMK), led by MK Stalin, which was at the receiving end of Rajinikanth’s barb, has still not mounted a strong protest ⁠— possibly to avoid giving the actor the mileage that he is gunning for. The state election in Tamil Nadu in 2021 For six decades, the politics in Tamil Nadu has been dominated by the Dravidian ideology, which barfs at majoritarianism unlike the Hindutva espoused by the BJP. However, there is some fatigue, growing discontent with the corruption, is a vacuum in leadership with the passing away of iconic leaders like J Jayalalithaa and M Karunanidhi. There is a growing clamour for change. Aside from the need for change, what works for Rajinikanth is the unprecedented popularity, and the fact that there aren’t any rival leaders of his stature.
