Eight songs that ensured Kishore Kumar became a legend

<keyword id="19894922" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Uttar-Pradesh" source="keywords">Uttar Pradesh</keyword> has strong and established women leaders but, ironically, the majority of this '<keyword id="19911646" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Nari-Shakti" source="keywords">Nari Shakti</keyword>' does not belong to this state. Barring a few, most of the women leaders have come from other states and after contesting several elections, they have consolidated their position in Uttar Pradesh. Senior Congress leader <keyword id="19935990" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sonia-Gandhi" source="keywords">Sonia Gandhi</keyword> leads the brigade of political talent imported from outside Uttar Pradesh. A native of Italy who was living in New Delhi with her in-laws, the Gandhi bahu made her political debut from Amethi in 1999 and then contested and won the Rae Bareli seat from 2004 to 2019. Sonia Gandhi began campaigning in Amethi from 1984 when her husband Rajiv Gandhi made his political debut. When Sonia Gandhi finally took a plunge in politics after the former Prime Minister's demise, she chose the family turf, Amethi. The former Congress President was at one time seen as a prime ministerial candidate, though she never claimed the position. Another woman politician who was seen as a prospective prime ministerial candidate is BSP supremo, <keyword id="19897516" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Mayawati" source="keywords">Mayawati</keyword>. Mayawati was born in Delhi but her political 'karambhoomi' became Uttar Pradesh when the first SP-BSP government came into existence in 1993 in the state. Circumstances propelled Mayawati into the Uttar Pradesh chief minister's chair in 1995 and over the years, she has emerged as a politician who cannot be ignored. Actor-turned-politician, <keyword id="19968072" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Hema-Malini" source="keywords">Hema Malini</keyword>, who is seeking her third term from Mathura, belongs to Tamil Nadu and has spent most of her life in Mumbai. She contested and won the 2014 and 2019 elections from Mathura. Hema Malini calls herself 'Krishna ki gopi' and claims to have a divine connect with Mathura. Among others in this list is Smriti Irani, who is seeking her second term from Amethi and originally belongs to Delhi. However, after winning Amethi in 2019, she calls herself 'Amethi ki bitiya'. She has even built her home in Gauriganj in Amethi and is well versed with local politics and the local people. Maneka Gandhi, who originally belongs to Delhi, is the senior-most MP among these women, having won her first election in 1989 on a Janata Dal ticket. She later joined the BJP and has always chosen Uttar Pradesh to contest elections - first Pilibhit and then Sultanpur. Jaya Prada, another actor-turned-politician, was born in Rajahmundry, Andhra Pradesh but chose Uttar Pradesh to kickstart her political career even though she had earlier joined the TDP. Jaya Prada successfully contested the Rampur Lok Sabha seat in 2004 and 2009 elections on a Samajwadi Party ticket. Later, she joined the BJP in 2019. Dimple Yadav, senior SP leader and wife of Akhilesh Yadav, originally belongs to Uttarakhand but made Uttar Pradesh her home after her marriage to Akhilesh. Dimple Yadav began her career by losing a bypoll to Raj Babbar of the Congress from Firozabad in 2009 but won the Kannauj seat in a 2012 bye-election. She won the Kannauj seat in 2014 but lost in 2019. However, Dimple Yadav won the Mainpuri bye-election after the demise of Mulayam Singh Yadav in 2022. Among all these women leaders, it is only Union Minister Anupriya Patel of Apna Dal (S) who was born and brought up in Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh. Interestingly, even in the past, several women leaders who made a mark in Indian politics were born outside Uttar Pradesh but chose to contest polls from the state. Former Lok Sabha Speaker, Meira Kumar, made her debut in politics when she won a bye-election from Bijnor in 1985. Meira Kumar, who is the daughter of late veteran politician Jagjivan Ram, was born in Bihar. Former Delhi Chief Minister, late Sheila Dikshit, won her first election from Kannauj in 1984. She was born in Kapurthala in Punjab. Freedom fighter Sucheta Kripalani, the first woman Chief Minister in India, who headed the Uttar Pradesh government, also belonged to Punjab but won the Assembly polls from Mehdawal in Sant Kabir Nagar. --IANS amita/rad

Uttar Pradesh's political 'Nari Shakti' does not belong to it

Political parties all over the country enrolled female star power to increase their visibility in the <keyword id="4577611" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="lok-sabha-election-2019">Lok Sabha Election 2019</keyword>. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headlined four veteran actresses to cheer its cause across the country — Hema Malini, Kirron Kher, Jaya Prada and Smriti Irani, who served as the Textiles Minister during Modi’s 2014 tenure. Congress, on the other hand, brought only one female actress to contest the elections — Urmila Matondkar in Mumbai North. The Election Commission’s counting shows that BJP’s Gopal Shetty, isn’t just leading, but dominating over Matondkar garnering 72.2% of the vote share. Even Poonam Sinha, Samajwadi Party (SP)’s Bollywood candidate, is trailing far behind her contender, BJP’s Rajnath Singh in Lucknow. BJP contestants largely beat exit poll predictions Contesting the Lok Sabha Election from Amethi, a Congress stronghold, Irani seems to be leading over the incumbent Rahul Gandhi by a margin of 10,000 votes according to data from the Election Commission in contrast to the exit poll that predicted a Gandhi victory. During the 2014 election, Gandhi did manage to beat out Irani but she dented his vote share by at least 12%. BJP’s ‘dream girl’ candidate, Hema Malini, flipped from trailing during the initial vote count to commanding a strong lead of 62.2%. Her primary contender, Kunwar Narendra Singh from the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) was left in the dust with 33.3% vote share. Jaya Prada, on the other hand, looks unlikely to bring a victory home for the BJP as she trails behind Samajwadi Party (SP)’s Azam Khan in Rampur with a difference larger than 100,000 votes between them.

Former Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav has won the elections from the Azamgarh lok sabha seat with a margin of more than 250,000 votes. The Samajwadi party led by Akilesh Yadav faced the elections as part of the Mahagathbandhan involving SP, BSP and RLD. The exit poll results for the SP as per Axis IndiaToday-Axis MyIndia predict that the alliance made up by the three parties might win from 16 seats only. The Chanakya predictions for 2019 Lok Sabha seats presume only 2 seats for SP and its alliance. The other predictions for SP for the Lok Sabha elections 2019 include 17-19 by News18, 13 seats by India Today, 40 constituencies by CVoter and 41 seats by NewsX. The total number of parliamentary seats in UP is 80. In 2014 general elections for the parliament, SP got only 4 seats out of 80 from Uttar Pradesh. In 2009 elections, SP won from 22 constituencies. The winning statistics for SP during 2004 was 35 seats. In 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Akilesh Yadav is fighting from Azamgarh Lok Sabha seat. Dharmendra Yadav fights from Badaun, Devendra Yadav from Etah, and Mulayam Singh Yadav seeks election from Mainpuri Lok Sabha constituency. The other important candidates for SP in UP are Azam Khan from Rampur and S.T. Hassan from Moradabad Lok Sabha seat. SP has nominated Shafiq-ur-Rehman from Sambhal ruling out the speculations that the party might field Aparna Yadav from here. In Maharashtra, SP was interested to form an alliance with the Congress party. The Congress did not heed to the demands of SP for any one seat among Mumbai South, Mumbai South Central, Bhiwandi, Mumbai North West, or Mumbai North Central seats. Following that, SP entered into an alliance with the BSP and they both agreed upon the seat sharing formula at the rate of 4 seats for SP and 44 seats for BSP. In Maharashtra, SP contested from four seats namely Mumbai North West, Bhiwandi, Beed, and Nanded.
