Business Insider spoke to more than 30 insiders about how Rolling Stone owner Jay Penske dodged controversy to quietly amass a media empire

For months, <keyword id="1858114" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nikki-Finke">Nikki Finke</keyword> and her publisher, <keyword id="1043859" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jay-Penske">Jay Penske</keyword>, have been at <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/nikki-finke-responds-to-sharon-waxman-2013-6" target="_blank">very public odds</a> over <a href="http://www.deadline.com/hollywood/" target="_blank">Deadline Hollywood</a> - the entertainment industry blog that Penske <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2009/jun/24/business/fi-ct-deadline24" target="_blank">purchased from Finke for a seven-figure sum</a> in 2009.
As of this morning, the two have officially parted ways.
Finke first announced the news on <a href="https://twitter.com/NikkiFinke" target="_blank">her Twitter account</a> to her over 200,000 followers:

Despite attempts by all to have it go otherwise, Nikki Finke will no longer be leading Deadline <keyword id="2370" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="hollywood">Hollywood</keyword>, and she will not be writing weekend box office or filing stories going forward. This is an emotional and painful parting of the ways for us. When we joined Deadline four years ago from The Hollywood Reporter and Variety (respectively), we felt that we were doing something disruptive and game-changing. That spirit is what brought us together and will keep us together, and the current team will remain on that path.

IT'S OFFICIAL: Nikki Finke Leaves Deadline - The Controversial Hollywood Blog She Founded 

<div class="image-container float_right"><div class="image">Deadline Hollywood's <keyword id="1858114" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Nikki-Finke">Nikki Finke</keyword> gave a candid interview to the WSJ about owner Penske media, "he issue is whether this shared vision is still intact."</div></div>
In 2009, Nikki Finke sold her online entertainment magazine <a href="http://www.deadline.com/hollywood/">Deadline Hollywood Daily</a> - famous for its original scoops - to Mail.com Media Group, an Internet company controlled by <keyword id="1043859" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jay-Penske">Jay Penske</keyword>, for a whopping <a href="http://www.jewishjournal.com/hollywoodjew/item/nikki_finke_sells_deadline_hollywood_for_14_million_20090624">$14 million</a>. 
But when Penske also purchased Finke's competitor, Variety, last year, she wasn't happy.
Despite being owned by the same company, Deadline recently mocked Variety for its "humiliating loss of readership and influence."
Apparently, Finke was peeved that 34-year-old Chairman and CEO, Jay Penske, didn't give her a leading role at Variety, which is a direct competitor and has been around for longer than Deadline.
And now Finke wants out of Penske's <a href="http://www.pmc.com/company/" target="_blank">media empire</a>.
"Jay Penske shared my vision of what Deadline could be, [but] now circumstances have changed with the addition of Variety and the issue is whether this shared vision is still intact," <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424127887323893004579057311417605016.html" target="_blank">Finke tells The Wall Street Journal</a> in a candid new interview. "One of the most noble things Jay Penske could ever do would be to give me back Deadline." 
If Penske doesn't give Finke her site back, the veteran journalist says she will find an investor to help her buy the site back.
And if neither of those things happen, Finke will just start her own site, <a href="http://www.vulture.com/2013/08/report-nikki-finke-might-start-nikkifinkecom.html" target="_blank">the NikkiFinke.com</a> - which, she says, "would fill a different need for the Hollywood community" than Deadline.
Finke tells the WSJ she believes that in order for the publications to coexist as corporate siblings, they can't be direct competitors.
"It is very clear that our specialty is breaking news," Finke said of Deadline. "I would like to see Variety's specialty be analysis and commentary."
And in seemingly further hopes of keeping the peace, Finke tells the WSJ, "I have confidence that no matter what happens, Jay and I can reach an amicable solution to all of this."
A spokesperson for Penske, meanwhile, emailed the WSJ a flat reply: "We are very pleased with the overwhelming success of the Variety business since our acquisition, as well as <keyword id="1752334" type="ENTERTAINMENT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Deadline-com">Deadline.com</keyword>'s continued growth of audience and revenue." 
While Finke's attorneys have proposed that she should be let out of her contract, which runs through 2016, the Penske rep says the company has "every intent to continue ... our contractual relationship with Ms. Finke through the end of her term."

15 current and former yacht crew members describe rampant harassment in one of the world's most glamorous industries

Washington, Apr 5 (AP) President Donald Trump met by phone with many US pro sports leaders Saturday to discuss how that industry has been affected by the global coronavirus pandemic, saying he was looking forward to the resumption of competitions "as soon as we can." The NBA, NHL, NFL and Major League Baseball were all represented on the call by their commissioners - Adam Silver, Gary Bettman, Roger Goodell and Rob Manfred, respectively."I want fans back in the arenas," Trump said later in a briefing at the White House. "I think it's ... whenever we're ready. As soon as we can, obviously. And the fans want to be back, too. They want to see basketball and baseball and football and hockey. They want to see their sports. They want to go out onto the golf courses and breathe nice, clean, beautiful fresh air." A person with direct knowledge of what was discussed on the call said Trump believes the NFL season - scheduled to begin Sept. 10 - will start on time with fans in seats.A second person with knowledge of the call said that some commissioners, Silver among them, stressed to Trump that they are working on multiple plans to resume their seasons but cautioned that none of those plans can be enacted without clearance from public health officials. The people spoke to AP on condition of anonymity because no discussion points from the call were to be revealed publicly.Others on the call included PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, Indianapolis Motor Speedway owner Roger Penske, UFC President Dana White, World Wrestling Entertainment's Vince McMahon, MLS Commissioner Don Garber, WNBA Commissioner Cathy Englebert, LPGA Commissioner Mike Whan and Breeders' Cup president Drew Fleming.The NBA was the first of the major US sports leagues to shut down on March 11, doing so after Utah Jazz center Rudy Gobert tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. Other leagues quickly followed, and hundreds of games have already been lost. The NCAA men's and women's basketball tournaments were cancelled along with virtually every other college athletic event for the remainder of the academic year; major events like the Masters Tournament, the Kentucky Derby and the Indianapolis 500 have been postponed; and thousands of arena employees have lost work because of the shutdown of the sports and entertainment industries.NASCAR gave teams a tentative schedule to resume racing on May 24 with the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. <div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div></div></div>Shutterstock, the £1.4 billion ($2.2 billion) picture agency that specialises in generic stock photos, just a signed a major deal that could see it directly rival Getty Images.Shutterstock is now partnering with the owner of Hollywood trade magazine Variety, Penske Media Corporation (PMC), to distribute images and video from events such as the Academy Awards, Cannes and fashion shows.<a href="http://variety.com/2015/biz/news/shutterstock-penske-photo-business-1201524128/">PMC confirmed this in a statement on its website.</a>This is a huge deal, as previously Shutterstock mainly concentrated on stock imagery, while images from entertainment events and with famous people can carry a premium. PMC will still retain the ownership of the images while Shutterstock will sell them to its 1.3 million customers. Shutterstock just sealed a massive deal with Variety's owners

A Hollywood legend returned from a long absence with guns blazing Thursday. 
Late last year, infamous columnist Nikki Finke <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/kateaurthur/is-this-nikki-finkes-final-post-on-deadline-hollywood">parted ways</a> with the site she founded, Deadline Hollywood. For months, Finke, who is known for rarely being photographed and for publishing no-holds-barred, gossipy scoops that terrify studio executives, remained silent as rumors swirled of a potential reconciliation with her old bosses along with reports they had her under a contract that would prevent her from working anywhere else until 2016.
Finke first began to stir last month when she posted a note on her personal website indicating the webpage would go "live" on June 2. However, <a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/kateaurthur/no-one-really-wants-a-nikki-finke-comeback">when that date came and went</a> with nothing but a message from Finke blaming delays on "late-breaking developments," it seemed her absence from Tinseltown might really last.
However, Finke finally returned Thursday rising from the ashes like a foul-mouthed phoenix with <a href="http://nikkifinke.com/first-nikki-post/">an R-rated verbal barrage</a> slamming her former colleagues, her competitors, the Hollywood power structure, and her own commenters. 
Finke began her glorious return with <a href="http://nikkifinke.com/first-nikki-post/">a note on her personal site</a> that included an explanation of her exile from Tinseltown.
"I'm posting on my own website after sitting out my non-compete for 7 soul-crushing months. And that's why I designed my new logo to look the way it does - gritty and bullet-riddled with a fiery palm tree shooting sparks into the night sky more dramatically than any fancy klieg light," Finke explained. "Let those wimpy Hollywood websites do glossy or garish or rewrite press releases or post stenography instead of sturm und drang. I'm all about this town's gritty reality exposed through the harsh glare of my reporting."
She went on to offer some choice words for those other "wimpy Hollywood websites." Armed with an arsenal of incredible puns, Finke doled out sick burns to the current team at Deadline Hollywood and her other major competitors. She referred to Deadline, Variety, The Wrap, and The Hollywood Reporter as "Deadlame," "Valiety," "The Hollywood Unreported," and "The Crap."
Finke had especially harsh words for Deadline. She promised she would have "much more to say over the next few days about Little Lord Fauntleroy and Mike Phlegming," an apparent reference to Penske Corporation heir Jay Penske, who <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2009/jun/24/business/fi-ct-deadline24">purchased Deadline from her in 2009</a>, and the site's film editor, Mike Fleming. Finke did not respond to a request from Business Insider asking to clarify the references. She wrote that she would delay discussing them because, "I don't fuck on the first date."
In addition to trashing the competition and promising to be the "cruel and quirky alternative," Finke outlined "a few rules of the road" for her readers.
"Just like I can't be silenced or intimidated here, your comments won't get sanitized. (Even the inevitable four-letter words about my genitals.) I'll monitor your comments but never alter them," she said.
Overall, Finke said her "new website is not for the easily offended or ridiculously naïve." That seems abundantly clear.
