<p>But the video wasn't made public until May 29 of that same year, which is the date the site considers its birthday.</p>
<p>Since then, YouTube has exploded, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/yt/press/statistics.html">with more than 100 hours of video being uploaded every minute</a>.</p>
<p>So it's celebrating its 9th birthday in style: <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vuKF0BpyDA&amp;feature=youtu.be">by commemorating the music everyone has made on the video site</a>.</p>
<p>In a statement, YouTube writes:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;" dir="ltr">To call out just a few highlights in YouTube history, there are more than 120,000 videos inspired by "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFgquLnL59al3MA48iMn_Rb2U6VCae2Ll" target="_blank">Let it Go</a>" (based on videos posted with that title), half a million by "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZCKHjcLjCk&amp;list=PL1l9pGBBX53g44jQSJGY1junF16ezOc3Z" target="_blank">Gangnam Style</a>," and a stunning 1.5 million videos by "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjd9OT1rI6vQ5qPSPhIbKlg1U_Kxrpo1m" target="_blank">Harlem Shake</a>" (that's a lot of motorcycle helmets). These inspired riffs got us thinking about those magical moments when songs become bona fide trends-and people all over the world start remixing, covering, parodying, dancing, and lip-dubbing.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;" dir="ltr">So to celebrate this year, we pay homage to the music you've made on YouTube. We got a bunch of your favorite performers together to cover some of the most memorable musical moments in YouTube's history. The result is a mashup called YouTube Birthday Karaoke Night, featuring familiar faces like The Gregory Brothers, Chester See, Cimorelli and more (see if you can spot all 18).</p>
<p dir="ltr">YouTube was founded by three former PayPal employees - Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim - in February 2005. It began as a personal video-sharing service, rather than a video search engine, which is what made it stand out. </p>

YouTube Brought Back Some Of Its Biggest Stars To Celebrate Its 9th Birthday

Aside from notifying the accused students, Stanford is also investigating the "larger matter" of cheating, the provost writes.</p><p>This rise in allegations may be tied to students' use of technology.</p><p>"With the ease of technology and widespread sharing that is now part of a collaborative culture, students need to recognize and be reminded that it is dishonest to appropriate the work of others," Etchemendy writes in the letter, <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-03-26/stanford-probes-troubling-increase-in-cheating-allegations">which Bloomberg reported on earlier Thursday</a>.</p><p>Earlier this semester, another elite school - Dartmouth College - <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/dartmouth-students-suspended-for-cheating-in-ethics-class-2015-1">was rocked by a cheating scandal after dozens of students were suspended</a> for cheating in a sports ethics class. The students <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/dartmouth-students-used-clickers-to-fake-attendance-2015-1">reportedly used hand-held "clickers" to fake their attendance</a> in the school's largest course.</p><p>Here is Etchemendy's full letter to the faculty, <a href="http://news.stanford.edu/news/2015/march/provost-faculty-letter-032415.html">via Stanford's website</a>.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">Dear Colleagues,</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">I am writing to inform you of an unusually high number of troubling allegations of academic dishonesty reported to our Office of Community Standards at the end of winter quarter. Among a smattering of concerns from a number of winter courses, one faculty member reported allegations that may involve as many as 20 percent of the students in one large introductory course.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">While OCS investigates the larger matter and students are being notified, I want to take this opportunity to remind everyone of our role in helping students understand the seriousness of academic dishonesty. At the beginning of our students' Stanford careers, they are introduced to the Honor Code and agree to abide by it. One-Half Of Twitter's Active Users Tweet Monthly

<p>Senior Justin Brown says in October 2013 a female student sexually assaulted him after a drunken encounter at a party on campus. While Brown writes that sexual contact with the female student was initially welcome, including her putting her hand down his pants while they made out, he knew he "didn't want to end the night in her bed" and decided to help her back to her room because she was drunk.</p>
<p>Brown writes that he "felt stuck" while walking the female student home, as they repeatedly stopped to make out. According to Brown, these "stop-offs" became unwelcome and he began to resist her advances:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">After a while, these stop-offs became less of a mutual decision and more of a demand from her. I began denying her advances; it was late and I just wanted to get her home safely so I could get some sleep. She continued to engage with me and I denied her requests with a verbal "no" several times ... I did my best to stick to my "no" every time she demanded more, but at each denial she would stop dead in her tracks and refused to walk with me unless I complied.</p>
<p>Brown went along with the advances, he writes, believing he "had only one option" if he wanted to ensure that the drunk female student got back to her room safely. He went back to his own room, confused:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">I don't fault her for my change of heart; I fault her for not listening to my clear "no" several times after I made my final decision. Was the situation handled perfectly? No. I was confused, horny and intoxicated. I wasn't properly educated to even understand that this experience would qualify as sexual assault. But even with all of these things in play, the fact of the matter is that my "no" was not respected. Sure, she didn't use force, but what was I supposed to do?</p>
<p>Almost a year after the alleged assault, Brown wanted to get some advice about what had happened to him. Not getting immediate help from Stanford's sexual assault counselors, he said, Brown was referred by the university to the YWCA Sexual Assault Center on campus, a partnership between Stanford and the YWCA Rape Crisis Center of Silicon Valley.</p>
<p>As Brown writes, he was "flabbergasted" by the hotline's initial response. He said the female staff member told him, "You could have just left her ... If I were a man in your shoes, I would have definitely called 911."</p>
<p>"It was incredibly frustrating that an organization known for warning against victim-blaming in the case of women had no problem jumping straight to this tactic against a male victim when the tables were turned," Brown writes.</p>
<p>However, he says he found a better reception at Stanford's Sexual Assault and Relationship Abuse Office, where the director directed him towards various resources and told Brown that his story does count as sexual assault.</p>
<p>"My experience with the SARA Office was wholly positive, as the director took the time to see me not as a victim, not as a male, but as a person with a tough question that needed an answer," Brown writes.</p>
<p>In publishing the op-ed, Brown writes, he is not looking to get the female student expelled. According to Brown, "I don't believe she had any especially malicious intent during the incident and her presence on campus does not present any imminent danger to me."</p>
<p>The rape of men is not as rare as one might think. The most recent National Crime Victimization Survey found that nearly 40% of rape and sexual violence issues were against men, as Hanna Rosin <a href="http://www.slate.com/articles/double_x/doublex/2014/04/male_rape_in_america_a_new_study_reveals_that_men_are_sexually_assaulted.html">pointed out in Slate</a>.</p>
<p>Still, male sexual assault by a female is rarely discussed, and even sometimes dismissed as impossible. When it is talked about, as <a href="http://www.psmag.com/navigation/politics-and-law/women-sexually-assault-men-92099/">Livia Gershon writes in Pacific Standard magazine</a>, it's often colored by "cultural stereotypes" of men and women.</p>
<p>"If men are constantly, ravenously seeking sex, then it seems as if it's up to women to protect themselves by staying sober and keeping male friends out of their dorm rooms. And, by the same token, if women are uncharacteristically pushing, or even forcing, men into sex, then it seems like the only acceptable response is gratitude," Gershon writes.</p>
<p>Stanford declined to comment on Brown's op-ed, citing FERPA federal privacy laws. We've also reached out to the YWCA Sexual Assault Center of Silicon Valley, and we will update this post if we hear back.</p>

Controversy accompanied his exit from Square, with a threat of a lawsuit over sexual harassment claims by a male employee who allegedly obtained a job at the company after beginning a relationship with Rabois. Which makes Gawker's accusations of Rabois' undergraduate homophobia all the more disturbing. Rabois is now a partner at venture capital outfit Khosla Ventures and serves on the board of directors at Yelp and Xoom.</p>

It's where movie trailers premiere. It's where a whole new class of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/top-20-most-popular-youtube-stars-2014-11">multimillionaire "Youtube stars" have cropped up</a>.</p><p>To chart Youtube's growing influence, Business Insider talked with Youtube expert and virality consultant <a href="http://brendangahan.com/" target="_blank">Brendan Gahan</a>.</p><p>Gahan is the founder of <span style="line-height: 1.5em;">social media marketer</span><span style="line-height: 1.5em;"> </span><a href="http://www.epicsignal.com/" target="_blank">Epic Signal</a><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">, and his current client list includes PepsiCo, Anheuser-Busch InBev, Microsoft, and Uniqlo. </span></p><p>Here are the 10 most important videos in Youtube history, with Gahan's comments:</p><h3>1. "Me at the zoo" (2005)</h3><p><iframe width="420" height="315" frameborder="0" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/jNQXAC9IVRw"></iframe></p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNQXAC9IVRw" target="_blank">This 18-second video</a> of Youtube cofounder Jawed Karim standing in front of elephants at the San Diego Zoo started it all. "It's amazing how unassuming the first video on Youtube is," Gahan says. "In a lot of ways it's representative of Youtube - it doesn't need to be this fancy production; it can be approachable. The first Youtube video is something anyone could create on their own." <span style="line-height: 1.5em;"></span></p><h3>2. "Lazy Sunday" (2005)<span style="color: #222222; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></h3><p><iframe width="512" height="288" frameborder="0" src="http://www.hulu.com/embed.html?eid=pvzcms_bqicojyfv8zozoq"></iframe></p><p>Saturday Night Live <a href="http://nymag.com/arts/tv/features/47548/" target="_blank">stopped being cool sometime in the 1990s</a>. Then "Lazy Sunday" happened, in which Andy Samberg and Chris Parnell rapped about buying candy and seeing "Chronicles of Narnia." The video went bonkers on Youtube before it was taken down. "Lazy Sunday was one of the first times where Youtube went everywhere," Gahan says. "It was like a viral moment for Youtube as well. Instantly that player was everywhere you went."</p><h3>3. "Pokemon theme" (2005)</h3><p><iframe width="420" height="315" frameborder="0" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/MkE2lxkw00w"></iframe></p><p>The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/top-20-most-popular-youtube-stars-2014-11?op=1">Youtube star universe</a> started with Smosh, the name of comedy duo Ian Hecox and Anthony Padilla. In <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/top-20-most-popular-youtube-stars-2014-11?op=1">total</a>, their parody videos about video games and pop culture have amassed 6 billion views and 32 million subscribers. It all started with their singing the Pokemon theme song. "It was right when all the coverage around Youtube was coming in, right before the Google acquisition," Gahan says. "It really propelled Smosh to stardom."</p><h3>4. "Sunglass catch" (2007)</h3><p><iframe width="420" height="315" frameborder="0" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/-prfAENSh2k"></iframe></p><p>This Ray-Ban produced video was one of the first viral ads. Blurring the line between real and fake, the video shows two guys throwing sunglasses at one another <span>from atop a bridge or into a moving car</span>, with the wayfarers magically landing on the other's face. "It was a lot of stupid tricks," Gahan says, "but they did really well, and the videos were an a-ha moment for brands." Marketers realized Youtube could reach big audiences. </p><h3>5. "Justin Singing So Sick by Ne-yo "(2007)</h3><p><iframe width="420" height="315" frameborder="0" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/csymVmm1xTw"></iframe></p><p>Before there were any Beliebers, Justin Bieber was a Canadian kid whose mom uploaded a video of him singing R&amp;B. That video was spotted by music promoter Scooter Braun. The rest is record industry history. "It's probably the earliest example of someone coming from Youtube into the mainstream and just dominating," Gahan says. "For someone to be plucked from relative obscurity and essentially dominate the music industry, that's pretty incredible."</p><h3>6. "Yes We Can - Barack Obama Music Video" (2008)</h3><p><iframe width="420" height="315" frameborder="0" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/jjXyqcx-mYY"></iframe></p><p>Youtube showed its political potential in 2008, when Will.I.am gathered a bunch of celebrities to sing Barack Obama toward the White House. "The Youtube community rallied around Obama," Gahan says, "and the power the platform resonated within the political community, where before that it was largely ignored." </p><h3>7. "Japan Earthquake: Helicopter aerial view video of giant tsunami waves" (2011)<span style="color: #222222; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"> </span></h3><p><iframe width="420" height="315" frameborder="0" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/w3AdFjklR50"></iframe></p><p>In the same way that Twitter became the place where news breaks, Youtube has become the place where news videos often first surface. That trend started with the 2011 Japanese tsunami. "It seemed like an event where people were getting more stuff online and watching the Youtube videos before it was surfacing up to TV," Gahan says. </p><h3><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">8. "PSY - GANGNAM STYLE" (2012)</span></h3><p><iframe width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/9bZkp7q19f0"></iframe></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">At over 2 billion views, "Gangnam Style" is the most-watched Youtube video of all time.</span></p><p><span style="line-height: 1.5em;">"Gangnam Style was the Macarena of the post-YouTube era," Gahan says. "It was goofy and catchy, and something you could share to get a few laughs. Soon so many people were sharing it, it was weird if you hadn't and you almost felt pressure to join in by sharing. It was social proof at its finest - you had to share that video at that time because everyone was."</span></p><h3>9. "Bill Gates ALS Ice Bucket Challenge" (2014) <span style="color: #222222; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5em;"></span></h3><p><iframe width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/XS6ysDFTbLU"></iframe></p><p>The "ice bucket challenge" took over the late summer of 2014, where <a href="http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/sep/08/youtube-ice-bucket-challenge-videos" target="_blank">videos tagged <span>#icebucketchallenge</span> uploaded from over 150 countries received over 1 billion views</a>. It raised $98.2 million for the ALS Association in just one month. </p><p>"Being in <keyword id="35666" type="COMPANY" weightage="60" keywordseo="advertising">advertising</keyword>, you heard it brought up in every single meeting," Gahan says. "Something of that scale is near impossible to replicate for a brand. It was for a good cause, and the whole thing of calling people out and putting a time limit on it was very smart, since it creates urgency."</p><h3>10. "GloZell's Interview with President Obama" (2015)</h3><p><iframe width="560" height="315" frameborder="0" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/nQe7o_Gea-4"></iframe></p><p>In 2015, Youtube stars got access previously reserved to elite journalists: a sitdown with the President of the US. Makeup artist Bethany Mota, comedian GloZell, and self-proclaimed geek vlogger Hank Green each did interviews with the president.
