While she is being prepped, her husband whipped out a phone to shoot a video. 	 The recession-proof business The stylist who gained fans and clients across ages - now owns the $30 million Jawed Habib Hair &amp; Beauty. He is also known to have given former president and missile man <keyword id="6402687" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="APJ-Abdul-Kalam">APJ Abdul Kalam</keyword>, his trademark hairdo.

 Habib came from a long line of hair dressers as his father and grandfather were in the business too. But Habib never wanted to be one. Yet, he is now thriving in his family business for the last 25 years. His company is aggressively working on plans to expand into more cities and sell more products and franchisees - even in times of slowdown. “Slowdown or not, everybody needs a haircut,” he said. Unlike in other sectors, Habib is hopeful of maintaining his margins and turning good profits. “There’s no recession in my business. It is safe. I don’t really run a salon. I sell franchisee. Every year we sell around 100-120 franchises. We have done it in the past and the growth has been similar in fact much better. My growth has never gone down, it has only been higher,” he said in an interview with Business Insider.

 Hair and beauty sector accounts for 40% of the massive <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/magazines/panache/the-yoga-commerce-boom-in-india/articleshow/47755678.cms">₹490 billion</a> wellness industry of India - at ₹196 billion. In a largely unorganized beauty services market, Habib is one of few popular chains which is keen on smaller towns as well as cities - that has expanded his horizons. Habib has conquered the needs, aesthetics and pocket size of Tier II and Tier III cities. He knew that the path to nurture a relation with the Indian middle class, will bear fruit. Today his approach has taken his brand to 110 cities in 24 states with 864 salons. He aims to cross the 1,000 mark in salon in FY20. “The knowledge in smaller towns in India is very simple. They have questions like which shampoo to use or should grow my hair long or not. I gave this information to people and they loved it,” he said. Habib believes that he has reached out only to a mere half a percent of vast middle class of India — at 300 million. “It still has a long way to go,” he said in his book, Attitude is Everything by SAGE Publications India. A haircut with every seminar Apart from his celebrity value and hobnobbing with who’s who, Habib also created a brand for himself in a unique manner - seminars. He sponsors at least 50 seminars a month across cities to spread the word about his business. At first, only 15-20 people used to attend his seminars but soon it increased to 400 to 500 people. In addition, he provides a haircut in every new city he visits. “All these have helped me in moving myself and my brand. In fact, over the years, we noticed that immediately after a visit, we get franchisee enquiry calls from that city,” he said. Habib also wants to expand overseas. Presently, he owns two salons in Bangladesh and one in Dubai. Another global salon is in works in Nairobi, Kenya. He is also looking to target Africa and the United Kingdom. "I am happy to join the BJP as I have seen the changes brought in the country by Prime Minister Modi in the last five years. I think nobody should be ashamed of their background, when the prime minister is proud to state that he was a 'chaiwala' then why should I be ashamed of calling myself a 'nai' (barber),” Habib told the news agency, ANI, soon after his appointment. Calling himself a barber is a political statement, coming from 55-year old Habib. He studied French literature in Delhi and went on to build a salon empire in the country with outlets in over 24 states and 110 cities in India – a total of <a href="https://jawedhabib.co.in/company-profile/">846 </a>shops if those in Singapore and London are counted. On the other hand, being a barber in India allows at best a humble life for most. In India, the Nai community, whose members have traditionally been barbers, are members of the ‘Other Backward Class’. A striking history Jawed Habib’s political connections are way older than his candidature with the BJP. Habib’s grandfather used to work at the President’s office as a barber. He was also the official barber for Lord Mountbatten and Jawaharlal Nehru, the country’s first Prime Minister. His father, too, was the official stylist at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President’s residence. Habib’s fame and success ensured that the family’s clout goes beyond its profession. Here are the ‘work from home’ internships to keep productivity high during Coronavirus

Sonam Sherpa. stood up and played his riffs long before rock music became a fad in India. Now, at a time when more youth anthems are hip-hop or EDM, Sherpa has passed away at a young age of 48— not leaving behind a single album. The lead guitarist of one India’s oldest rock bands, Parikrama, reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest in Kurseong while recording music for an upcoming movie. There are a handful of rock bands in India that can proudly claim that they have been around for 30 years. Parikrama is one of them and Sherpa, along with mates Nitin Malik and Subir Malik, have hung around right from the start⁠— at the dawn of economic liberalisation in India⁠ where not just foreign goods but even culture flowed in freely— and they never really stopped until today. And, all their music is available to be <a href="http://parikrama.com/home.html" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">downloaded freely on their website</a>.  “I just didn't realise there were metal/rock bands of this quality in India. I was so impressed by their (Parikrama’s) playing and attitude and professionalism and all of the Iron Maiden band and crew watched and listened to their entire set backstage,” <a href="https://ironmaiden.com/news/article/maiden-help-india-band-parikrama-on-their-first-ever-uk-visit-for-an-indian-act" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">Rod Smallwood, the manager of Iron Maiden said</a>.  Sherpa was the most famous among a generation of top-notch artists, who flooded India’s rock music scene in the 1990s and 2000s, from the east and north-eastern part of India. Born in Kalimpong, Sherpa went on to set up a school for aspiring musicians in New Delhi’s Hauz Khaz. Sherpa, or Parikrama for that matter, never became icons in the fullest sense but for the time they remained active, they put out some memorable music and thousands of concerts across the country.  Sherpa was, arguably, one of the most understated stars⁠— in a genre that celebrates outrage— who played the lead guitar for Parikrama, a rock band that was formed in 1991 and peaked in India in the mid-2000s. Iron Maiden even invited the band to perform in the UK. For a band that had painstakingly created a market for a relatively new genre of music in the country, Parikrama never cashed in on the fan following they had built one good at a time. “They are yet to release a full-length album, because they prefer giving out their music for free. They have had millions of downloads from their site and other related pages. They did release a free multimedia CD of their singles and videos in 2001. The band does not have any policies against their music being copied and distributed. They have made their music available for download on their official website,” the band’s Wikipedia page explained. The early 1990s was a watershed moment for rock and metal music in India, as the Rolling Stones described it, for rock enthusiasts in India. Alongside Parikrama, there were colleagues from Indian Ocean, Pentagram and Indus Creed showing the way to thousands of India’s homegrown rockers who followed them. And one of the pioneers, Sherpa, has breathed his last today.  The reason for the celebration: Welspun India, which makes towels, bathrobes, and bedsheet, registered a whopping 55% growth in net profit for the third quarter ending on December 31, 2019, sparking hopes of a turnaround amidst gloomy prospects for the entire sector. She became an entrepreneur with a new business line, Spaces, a brand that targets premium for towels and bedsheets at a domestic level. Nine years ago, in 2011, Goenka shook the textile industry in India when she took charge of the company. Some industry leaders thought the “Welspun has lost its mind” <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/business-wire/forbes-ranks-dipali-goenka-as-the-16th-most-powerful-businesswoman-in-asia/article8446854.ece">reported Forbes</a>. ‘Is she here because she is a part of the management?” <a href="https://wow.outlookbusiness.com/dipali-goenka/">Goenka told the media</a>. Two years later, she became the joint managing director in 2013. A few years into the business, Goenka proved the skeptics wrong. Welspun India’s annual revenue was nearly ₹5,500 crore last year. In fact, a look at the stock price of Welspun India shows that the real wealth generation for investors happened only after she took over.

Source: Google Finance Now, the company expects the WelHome and Spaces brands to touch ₹3,500 crore, according to an Edelweiss report, by next year whereas the current market value of entire Welspun India is just ₹4,500 crore. What makes her achievement special is that she has managed to grow the company at a time when the textile industry has been struggling to survive. Particularly, the textile exporters from India have been losing out <a href="https://scroll.in/article/810671/three-charts-show-how-indian-textile-industry-lost-the-race-to-bangladesh-and-vietnam">cheaper competition from Bangladesh and Vietnam</a>. The early setback Sexism was not the only challenge for Goenka. One of the biggest setbacks for the group was in 2016, when Target Corp, second largest value retailer in the US, informed their customers that Welspun India sold them substandard bedsheets.

 At the time, Target gave about 10% of Welspun India’s billion-dollar revenue every year. Their market cap took a steep fall of 54% — from ₹103.34 billion to ₹46.97 billion between August 19, 2016 and August 30, 2016. Goenka <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/cons-products/garments-/-textiles/how-welspun-india-is-emerging-from-a-crisis-that-rocked-its-credibility/articleshow/69706022.cms">took responsibility and met all her customers </a>including JCPenney, Costco, <keyword id="80487" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="walmart">Walmart</keyword> in the US to Sainsbury in Europe. In 2017-18, the company’s gross sales fell by 9%. But the company seems to have recovered from that now. It was ranked as the <a href="http://outlookindia.com/outlookmoney/investment/the-weaver-welspun-india-2122">top home textile suppliers in the US in 2017 </a>and has a distribution network in over 32 countries including US, UK, Europe, Canada and Australia. The good fight Goenka has not only chased her corporate aspirations, she has also strongly backed gender equality. “The biggest change is that the percentage of women has gone up from 7% to 23% in our workforce. IQ is not the only thing that will take an organisation forward. It is also the EQ.
