This is the longest gap in hostel fee revision among the top central universities in India.  The revised hostel fee for JNU students, after the partial rollback is at ₹3,600 per year and ₹1,800 for students belonging to below-poverty line sections. On the other hand, the annual hostel charges across IIT Delhi and Mumbai campuses range between ₹15,000 and ₹20,000. In a recent move, a few agitating students of the varsity occupied the administration block, defaced almost every wall of the block with graffiti against the JNU administration and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). It also increased the charges of a single room from ₹20 to ₹600 per month and to ₹300 for a double bed room which is to be shared. That accounts for an annual fee hike of almost ₹3,000 per student. That is a pain point for university students where “majority of students come from the most marginalized backgrounds in this country,” News18 <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/india/jnu-students-say-academic-emergency-at-varsity-demand-vcs-removal-as-teachers-extend-support-2382953.html">reported</a>. Added to this, hostel curfews and a dress code also did not resonate well with the students. The protest coincides with the institute’s third convocation ceremony. The student body called for a boycott as they demand a rollback of the rules and the fee hike. They also intend to marching towards the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) in Vasant Kunj, Delhi. Delhi police used water cannons to disperse the students as they tried to cross the barricades to meet the vice chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar. The VC repeatedly rejected the request to meet and discuss the issues.

"At a time when fee hikes are rampant across the country, students have emerged as the first line of defence for inclusive education. We invite all students of Delhi, to join us as we march on foot from JNU to Parliament on the first day of the winter session of Parliament," the JNUSU said. But not many have been coming out in support of the protest. “There are 8,000 students in the university and at least 6,000 of them want to attend classes. JNU students march to Parliament defying Section 144 imposed by the government

Banerjee, born in 1961 in <keyword id="6358070" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="mumbai">Mumbai</keyword>, bagged the award for his "experimental approach to alleviating global poverty". The 58-year-old economist received his PhD in 1988 from <keyword id="97117" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Harvard-University">Harvard University</keyword>. He also studied at the University of Calcutta and Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University. In 2003, he founded the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), along with his French-American wife Duflo, who is also a MIT professor, and Sendhil Mullainathan.. The announcement was made on Monday by the Ministry of Education at an event at the Bharat Mandapam in the national capital that was presided by Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Indian Institute of Technology Madras was ranked first in the <keyword id="22759868" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="NIRF-rankings" source="keywords">NIRF rankings</keyword> 2024 and it is the 6th time that it has bagged the top spot in NIRF ranking. IIT-Madras has also been ranked as the best engineering college for the past nine years. In the management category, IIM-Ahmedabad and Bangalore and Calcutta are among the top five. Indian Institute of Science (Bengaluru) ranked as the best university in the country followed by Jawaharlal Nehru University Delhi and Jamia Millia Islamia. Delhi University's Hindu College ranked as the best college in the country followed by Miranda House College and St. Stephen's College. IIT Madras ranked best higher educational institution in India

Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi have made it to the top 200 in QS World University Rankings 2017. 
 
IISc is placed in the 152th position while IIT Delhi secured 185th rank. Other IITs like, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Kanpur, IIT Kharaqpur, IIT Roorkee and IIT Guwahati are included in the top 500 in the rankings. 
 Massachusetts Institute of Technology, <keyword id="101399" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Stanford-University">Stanford University</keyword>, <keyword id="97117" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Harvard-University">Harvard University</keyword>, University of Cambridge and California Institute of Technology gained top five positions in the rankings. 
 In Engineering and Technology Degrees subject category, India is represented by 6 institutes in top 150 with five IITs and IISc. In top 50 Asian universities, five Indian institutes are listed in which IISc ranked 33 and rest are IITs (IIB, IITD, IITM and IITK). In Arts and Humanities subject category, DU is placed in 210th position with <keyword id="6360386" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jawaharlal-Nehru">Jawaharlal Nehru</keyword> University (JNU) in 247th position. In Social sciences, DU and JNU are in Top 400.

The latest use of the colonial law was the Delhi police that booked <keyword id="3048656" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kanhaiya-Kumar">Kanhaiya Kumar</keyword>, a former president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (<keyword id="6356383" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="JNU">JNU</keyword>) students’ union, and some of his associates from the same institution, for raising “anti India” slogans during a gathering. The incident in question occurred three years ago when a bunch of students from JNU were staging a protest against the death penalty handed to <keyword id="43716" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Afzal-Guru">Afzal Guru</keyword>, a militant held to be a terrorist by the country’s top court after it held him guilty for a gun attack outside the Indian Parliament in 2001. The students in the spotlight today were arrested in 2015, soon after the incident, but the court let them out on bail while the investigation carried on. News reports alleged that charges against Kumar and others were based on a doctored video, a charge that the Delhi police has ruled out with its move today. The incident shot Kumar—who is aligned with a left-wing outfit-- to fame and gave him political stage to voice his views to a larger audience. He is a staunch critic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his government and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The country’s polarized media has positioned itself with or against Kumar based on their ideological positions and the topic is hogging prime-time debates. The politics aside, the provision to arrest a person for <keyword id="6364658" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="sedition">sedition</keyword> is a law that has criticized at the highest levels in <keyword id="3658" type="COUNTRY" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> for over five decades now. When the British used the law as a tool to suppress rebellion in India, Mahatma Gandhi, who was charged with sedition, famously said the law was "designed to suppress the liberty of the citizen". In 1951, the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru described the law as "highly objectionable and obnoxious". In 1962, the Supreme Court imposed limits on the use of the law, making incitement to violence a necessary condition. The law itself put to a review as late as last year but the enforcement agencies have been keen time and again to use an archaic law to put down any kind of dissent. It’s 2019 and no political party in the country has made any real difference by doing away with a law that has repeatedly been used to stifle political opposition, despicably at times.

In the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=modi+cabinet+reshuffle&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Modi Cabinet rejig</a>, her demotion to Textiles Ministry is also stunning, but many predicted that she won’t be able to hold on to education ministry for long. 
 
Several issues eclipsed her stint at the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=HRD+ministry&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">HRD ministry</a>, starting with her degree controversy.

Irani was mired in a controversy over her claims of possessing a Yale degree. Secondly, she scrapped the four-year format at the Delhi University and went back with the three-year format, which was against the wishes of the VC and UGC. 
 
The HRD Ministry was also at loggerheads with the Niti Ayog over accreditation and other issues. Experts say Irani took Niti Ayog as interference. 
 
Her handling of suicide case of Dalit scholar at Hyderabad Central University, Rohith Vemula, was also criticised by many. 
 
The recent Jawaharlal Nehru University row involving Kanhaiya Kumar also didn’t add to her sheen. Irani also played with fire when replaced German with Sanskrit as the third language in Kendriya Vidyalayas in 2014. 
 
Irani was also at the centre of the controversy when she was accused of intervening in the affairs of IIT-Delhi prompting the resignation of Director RK Shevgaonkar, two years before his term.

These are the possibilities why Smriti Irani was removed from education ministry

The new National Education Policy evoked mixed reactions among academicians on Wednesday with some hailing it as a "groundbreaking" action plan that promotes holistic and multi-disciplinary learning and others arguing that it will pave the way for privatisation of education. A <keyword id="6751919" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="single-regulator">single regulator</keyword> for higher education institutions, multiple entry and exit options in degree courses, discontinuation of M.Phil programmes, low stakes board exams, common entrance exams for universities are among the highlights of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 approved by the Union Cabinet on Wednesday. Former Delhi University vice-chancellor Dinesh Singh, who was an official reviewer of the document when it was being formulated, said the policy lays down the road map pretty nicely. The policy has a good vision for school education, which is the foundation for higher education, he said. "They have talked about experiential learning which is so useful. Unless you improve school education, you cannot improve higher education. The concept of transciplinarity, hands on experience, breaking down of barriers between subjects and connecting them to society are some of the key points in the policy. This is the best chance of universities to create curricula around the challenges of society," he said. Elaborating with an example, he said there is a discipline in Mathematics called fluid dynamics but not one student in this country has any idea how to use fluid dynamics and computer science to create fighter jets and they are imported all the time. "At last, we have found a document which at least gives us a chance," he added. Singh also said that he has not been extremely enthused about regulators and feel they "are disabling you all the time". "They make you do silly things. They are talking about having a single regulator because otherwise things are not working well. I believe it's good. They will need a lot of good people. I am hoping that it will restore the autonomy of the varsities. Hopefully they will not prescribe too much," he said. Jamia Millia Islamia vice-chancellor Najma Akhtar called the NEP "groundbreaking" and said the higher education in India will now be holistic and multi-disciplinary with a shared focus on Science, Arts and Humanities. "A single regulator for all higher educational institutions is a great idea as it will bring coherence of approach and purpose. It will realise the vision of education in India," she added. The approval of new National Education Policy (NEP) by the government is a positive step forward, said Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) VC M Jagadesh Kumar. "NEP is the outcome of an extensive, highly participatory and inclusive consultation process. NEP aims at meeting the existing challenges in education and build the foundation of India''s promising future.We look forward to its implementation," he added. Delhi University professor Rahul Yadav welcomed the policy, and said it talks about multiple entry and exit options and provides choices to students, and does not put any burden on them. He was also enthused about the fact that the policy seeks to promote a multi-disciplinary approach and does not seek to restrict students to just humanities or science. Delhi University professor Naveen Gaur, however, said the policy has just "jazzier things" to say and even though it says that the Higher Education Commission of India will be a single regulator, it will have four verticals, which means that one vertical will be responsible for policy formulation and another for funding which is dangerous. He also said that the policy paves the way for entry of foreign universities in India, without any regulations, which can be dangerous for the education sector. The professor argued that the policy will take away the autonomy of institutions rather than making them more autonomous. Jamia Teachers' Association secretary Majid Jamil questioned the timing of bringing the policy. "At a time when there is <keyword id="1754604" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="coronavirus">coronavirus</keyword> pandemic, what was the need to hurry? The policy talks about online learning and virtual labs but there is no substitute to face-to-face learning. It also talks about four-year undergraduate programme, something which was implemented in Delhi University, but was met with opposition and was subsequently withdrawn. We do not agree with it," Jamil added. Delhi University's Academics for Action and Development (AAD), a teachers' body, called the NEP a policy of "tall ends with little means''. For instance, Indian has presently 18 per cent Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) and NEP sets the goal of 50 per cent GER by 2035, it said. "How can this be achieved -- more than double of GER in next 15 years? NEP is also talking of internationalisation in the same vein and will only facilitate the entry of the foreign universities to tap the Indian educational market for their own benefits. This is a "return of Macaulay" -- building an education system in the interest of foreigners and wealthy ones," it said, referring to British officer Thomas Babington Macaulay. The Delhi University Teachers' Association (DUTA) said it was opposed to the proposal to hand over every higher educational institution to a Board of Governors, which will enjoy all powers hitherto vested in the governing authorities of colleges and universities as well as the UGC and other regulating bodies. "Autonomy has been redefined as the freedom to optimise. The empowerment of the BoG hand in hand with redefined autonomy is in parallel with the neo-liberal reforms that deregulated businesses. It amounts to converting/handing over education as a business to corporate houses," it said.
