Inflows into small cap and mid-cap funds remained strong. White inflows into small cap funds fell from ₹4,495 crore in October to ₹3,699 crore in November, flows into mid-cap funds went up from ₹2,409 crore in October to ₹2,666c crore in November. Inflow into ELSS funds fell sharply from ₹266 crore in October to ₹104.4 crore in November. Sectoral funds which had seen an inflow of ₹3,895.72 in October, saw an inflow of ₹1,964 crore in November. The total outflow into debt schemes reached ₹4,706.7 crore, marking compared to ₹42,634 crore. Last month,. Similarly, liquid funds experienced an outflow of ₹644.7 crore in November, in contrast to an inflow of ₹32,964 crore seen in October.

Retail inflow into equity funds fall 22% in November

But that, however, is not the whole story. Even as the pandemic seems to be behind us, auto sales have not yet reached their pre-Covid levels. As compared to January 2020, auto sales in January 2023 were down by 8%, says data by Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations or FADA. “While sentiments are improving at a snail’s pace and are better than what it was a year ago, rural market is yet to fully come to the party as cost of ownership has shot up significantly while disposable income has not increased in the same ratio,” said Manish Raj Singhania, president of FADA. A recent report by JM Financial also said that the Union Budget 2023-24 had no specific triggers for rural growth. That would affect their spending capability with a spillover effect on the 2-wheeler segment. “In the absence of a specific focus on the rural economy in the Union Budget for 2023-24, analysts don't see immediate triggers for revival in the rural economy. Moreover, in the absence of specific or enhancement of allocation towards the rural economy, we believe that the rural environment would have to revive on its own. Hence, we would view businesses dealing with price-sensitive low-ticket items as less likely to benefit,” the JM Financial report said. When compared to January 2021 and pre-covid month of January 2020, sales of two-wheelers fell by 7% and 13%, respectively. However, on a year-on-year basis (compared to January 2022), it did show a growth of 10%. The economic survey 2022-23 tabled in the Parliament said that rural wages will rise at a steady positive rate as inflation is expected to soften thus translating into rise in real wages. “We are hopeful that this will have its rub-off effect with a rise in 2-wheeler sales going ahead,” FADA says in its outlook. Three-wheelers (3Ws), on the other hand, are having a much better run. Not only did they show a robust growth since last year, they are also closing the gap with the pre-Covid levels. They are down by a mere 3% as compared to the pre-Covid levels with a robust year-on-year growth of 59%. “EV FAME-2 subsidy along with demand from commercial 3W space is fuelling healthy growth. The segment has shown tremendous resilience and has almost clawed back to pre-pandemic levels,” FADA said. It also hopes that the enhanced income tax rebate can accelerate the demand for 2Ws as well as entry-level passenger vehicles (PVs). The PV segment continues to perform well with a growth of 22% year-on-year. It has also grown 8% from its pre-Covid levels. “While good enquiry, healthy bookings and improved supplies are helping aid this segment, it is the entry level sub-segment which is still feeling the pinch,” said Singhania. While waiting periods for some models have come down, compact SUVs, SUVs and luxury vehicles continue to witness minimum waiting of 2-3 months. FADA predicts that with China’s factory activity once again gaining pace, global supplies of parts and semiconductors will see a recovery, thus aiding better vehicle supplies and lower waiting period in future. “This will further fuel growth for the already healthy passenger vehicle category,” the industry body says. The Commercial Vehicle (CV) category has also shown robust growth by growing 16% year-on-year, and 6% from the pre-Covid month of January 2020. Continued demand in the market due to replacement of fleet, growth in freight availability and government’s consistent push for infrastructure projects has helped the CV segment rise above pre-Covid numbers. “The capital outlay of ₹10 lakh crore for infrastructure spending will help aid CV sales, which is already witnessing an upswing,” FADA says, adding that reduction in surcharge for highest tax payers could also benefit high-end vehicle sales. January auto sales rise 14% y-o-y but sentiment improving at a snail’s pace, says FADA

Inflation based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) was at 5.69% in December 2023 and 6.52% in January 2024. In August 2023, inflation touched a high of 6.83%. According to the data released by the <keyword id="20070866" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="national-statistical-office" source="keywords">National Statistical Office</keyword> (<keyword id="20067517" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="nso" source="keywords">NSO</keyword>), retail inflation in the food basket was at 8.3% in January 2024, down from 9.53% in the preceding month. “Inflation came in higher for December than our expectations at 5.1% against 4.7%, though lower than that of November which was 5.7%. Food products continue to exert upward pressure on inflation with cereals, vegetables, fruits, pulses, sugar and spices all witnessing high increases. There has been soothing of inflation in the core goods and services which is a relief from the point of view of monetary policy,” said <keyword id="20102121" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="madan-sabnavis" source="keywords">Madan Sabnavis</keyword>, chief economist at Bank of Baroda. We think RBI would rather continue with stability priority and continue maintaining 4% inflation target as sacrosanct, and hence we do not see premature easing from RBI,” said Akhil Mittal, senior fund manager-fixed income, Tata Mutual Fund. Most experts believe that uncertain food prices will keep the central bank cautious. "CPI inflation came in slightly softer than our expectations led by moderation in food prices. Positively though, core inflation softened in line with our expectations. However, uncertainties in food inflation outlook should keep RBI cautious in the near term, with much of action by the RBI expected on the liquidity front," said Upasna Bhardwaj, chief economist, Kotak Mahindra Bank. Industrial production grows 3.8% in December 2023 India's industrial production grew 3.8% in December 2023, according to official data released on Monday. Factory output measured in terms of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) had witnessed a growth of 5.1 per cent in December 2022. "India's Index of Industrial Production grows by 3.8% in December 2023," an official statement said. The data released by the National Statistical Office (NSO) showed that the manufacturing sector's output grew 3.9% in December 2023, up from 3.6% in the year-ago month. In December last year, the mining production rose 5.1% and power output increased 1.2%. IIP grew 6.1% during the April-December 2023 period compared to a 5.5% expansion in the year-ago period. “Growth has been pulled down by electricity growth which was just 1.2% reflecting lower levels of demand. Eleven of the 23 manufacturing categories witnessed negative growth with the significant one again being electronic items. Shares of Jio Financial Services rose nearly 15 per cent to reach a record high of Rs 347 apiece on the NSE and also marked its 52-week high level. In the mid-session trade, the 30-share BSE Sensex rose 59.02 points or 0.08 per cent to 73,217.26, while NSE Nifty gained 15.55 points to 22,233. Earlier this month, the financial services arm of Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) clarified that it has not been in any negotiations to acquire <keyword id="19898109" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="paytm" source="keywords">Paytm</keyword> wallet. On January 15, Jio Financial Services Ltd reported a 56 per cent decline in consolidated net profit at Rs 294 crore for the third quarter ended December 2023, compared to the previous quarter. The company earned a consolidated net profit of Rs 668 crore in the second quarter of the current fiscal. Its revenue too moderated to Rs 414 crore from Rs 608 crore in the September quarter. For the nine months ended December, the company's net profit stood at Rs 1,294 crore. Initially, the launch was to take place in the United States as well, but the company has now changed its plans. With the device launch as late as January next year, it already has plenty of competitors in the market with similar specs. As for storage, it will have two variants — 6GB + 128GB and 8GB + 256GB. It is expected to feature a 4,380mAh battery with 25W fast charging support. The phone is likely to cost under $600 in the European market but we will know for sure once it launches in January.
