Traffic on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway was suspended, while authorities ordered the closure of schools in Doda and Kishtwar districts as heavy rains lashed the Jammu region, creating a flood-like situation at many places, officials said on Wednesday. They said rivers and rivulets in many places, especially in Kathua and Samba districts, have reached close to or crossed the flood alert level. The weather office has predicted more rains in the region. Heavy rains lashed wide parts of Jammu division overnight, triggering mudslides and landslides at several places along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway in Ramban district, forcing authorities to suspend traffic, the officials said. "The highway is still blocked and people are advised not to travel till the restoration work is completed," a traffic department official said. The officials said the traffic on the Jammu-Pathankot highway was also diverted in Kathua district where two pillars of a bridge suffered damages due to flash <keyword id="48088" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="floods" source="Orion">floods</keyword> in Tarnah nallah. They said all government and private schools were closed for the day in Doda and Kishtwar districts as a precautionary measure. The decision was taken for the safety of the students as the water level in the Chenab river and its tributaries is on the rise amid continuous rainfall, they added. <keyword id="50509" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="katra" source="Orion">Katra</keyword>, the base camp for pilgrims visiting <keyword id="52191" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vaishno-devi" source="Orion">Vaishno Devi</keyword> shrine, received 315.4 mm rainfall, an all-time high, a spokesperson of the meteorological department said. "This is the heaviest rainfall since 1980," he said. The chopper and battery car service at the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine atop Trikuta hills in Reasi district was also suspended due to the inclement weather, the officials said. While the Vaishno Devi pilgrimage is going on smoothly, the new battery car track to the shrine was closed in view of the apprehension of shooting of stones and landslide, the officials said. They said the helicopter service to the shrine was also suspended due to inclement weather. Rivers and rivulets in many places, especially in Kathua and Samba districts, have reached close to or crossed the flood alert level with the weather office predicting more rains till noon. "The flood situation is grim in Kathua and Samba as all the rivers including Ujh in Kathua and Basantar have crossed flood alert mark, while the water level in Tawi, Chenab and its tributaries in Jammu are nearing the flood alert level," an official said. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted widespread to fairly widespread rainfall in various parts of Jammu and Kashmir over the next seven days. Due to the recent and continuous heavy rains in the area, we are sorry to inform you that the Chadwal bridge has been damaged. In consequence, this creates a potential threat to all vehicles and pedestrians trying to cross it," the advisory said. Floods in Taranah nallah caused damages to the pillars of the bridge resulting in its slight sinking, it said. "Please follow diversion and temporary routes. These routes are designed to facilitate smooth traffic flow and reduce discomfort," the advisory said. Police also asked the people to report suspicious activities. "If you see any suspicious activities on the roads or encounter potential threats, please inform the nearest police station immediately," the advisory said.

Heavy rain update: Traffic on Jammu-Srinagar highway suspended as flood-like situation develops in Jammu

Jammu, June 20 () Protesters blocked the Jammu-Pathankot highway near here on Saturday, demanding a judicial probe into the death of two relatives of a COVID-19 victim due to the alleged negligence on the part of the district administration. District Magistrate Sushma Chauhan has already ordered a time-bound magisterial probe into the death of Vimal Zadoo and his cousin brother Vipan Zadoo on Thursday during the cremation of their uncle who breathed his last a day earlier after testing positive for COVID-19. On Saturday morning, the district administration announced an ex-gratia relief of Rs two lakh each on "humanitarian grounds" to the next of kin of the deceased, while the COVID-19 test conducted on the bodies of Vimal and Vipan came out negative. Raising slogans in support of appropriate action against the erring officials, a large number of protesters, including family members of the deceased, took to streets at Gangyal on the outskirts of the city and blocked the highway in support of their demand for judicial probe and adequate compensation to the bereaved families. "The death of our young men was the direct result of negligence on the part of the administration. They were taken from place to place, wearing PPE kits, in search of cremation ground amid heat wave and were not even provided water," one of the protesters said, claiming that they died of dehydration and cannot be dismissed as a "natural death" and instead be treated as a "murder". Senior BJP leader and former legislator Vikram Randhawa, who joined the protest, said those responsible for the "failure" to protect the lives of the people should be taken to task. "The circumstances leading to the death of the duo is condemnable," he said, demanding a government job and accommodation for the family of Vimal who left behind his wife and two minor daughters. Local Municipal Corporator Baldev Singh Billawaria said it is very unfortunate that the administration has failed to identify a suitable place till date for the cremation of the COVID-19 victims despite witnessing unpleasant situations during the cremation of the COVID-19 victims in the past. Senior police and civil officers rushed to the scene and after hectic efforts of several hours managed to clear the highway for traffic, officials said. They said a board of doctors, which was constituted by the Government Medical College (GMC), conducted the postmortem on the deceased and later their bodies were handed over to their families for last rites on Saturday. "On humanitarian grounds, the district administration will extend an ex gratia of Rs two lakh to each of the NOKs of the two persons who died in an unfortunate incident that took place during cremation of COVID positive patient," the district magistrate said. By Tariq Sofi Jammu, Apr 13 () The lockdown due to coronavirus has posed a grave challenge to the migratory beekeepers, who chase blossoms from one state to another, and they are looking for support from both the administration and the people to keep their trade alive. Many of the apiarists have reached different parts of Jammu region from outside the Union Territory and are planning to move with their bee colonies towards Srinagar in the next couple of weeks as is the traditional practice. "This was the time when we used to come back from outside (Jammu and Kashmir) after the winter sojourn... this time we are facing the heat of the lockdown and are hoping the administration as well as local residents will facilitate our movement and cooperate in setting up apiaries," Farooq Ahmad Wani, president of Golden Honey Beekeepers Association, told . Wani, 47, who is a resident of Tethar village of Banihal in Ramban district, is camping at Battal village near Mansar Lake along with several other beekeepers from his district, who have returned from Rajasthan since early last month. He said the beekeepers traditionally move outside Jammu and Kashmir, especially to Rajasthan and Punjab, in December every year and return in March-April to Jammu before moving to Kashmir in the last week of April. "We came early this time but others were not so lucky and are still stranded in Punjab and other places. The rising temperatures pose a danger to the bees and we need to move from place to place for their safety and also to ensure good quality feed," he said. He said livelihood of tens of thousands of people, directly or indirectly linked to the honey trade, is at stake. Another beekeeper, who did not wish to be named, complained that the local residents in many areas are reluctant to allow them to set up their colonies after entering Kathua district from Punjab. "Recently, one of our vehicles carrying beehives from Punjab was stopped at Lakhanpur for hours together before being given a clearance by the authorities. Only the driver and one attendant were allowed, while others were sent to the administrative quarantine," he said. He said people of a village along Jammu-Pathankot highway objected and did not allow setting up of the shelter due to fear of coronavirus. "We are already following the guidelines of the government, staying in isolation and maintaining proper social distancing. The people need not to worry, just allow us to set up bee colonies on reaching our destinations," Wani said. He said there is a threat to the lives of the bees without proper care. "We faced a lot of problems due to the lockdown and the inclement weather, resulting in huge losses. The government needs to come forward and bail us out with financial assistance," marketing director of Golden Honey Qasim Umar said. He said they have already taken up the matter with the director of agriculture department and are hopeful of a positive response from the government. Wani, who has over 300 bee colonies, said he had allowed many of his workers to visit their homes after reaching Jammu but most of them could not join them due to the sudden lockdown. "The frequent rainfall added to our worries in Jammu… the production of honey went down and we are also not getting proper price for the product as there are people who are trying to exploit the situation in their favour," he said. Lockdown cripples migratory beekeepers of Jammu and Kashmir

After over an year, Three of the eight accused in the <keyword id="212403" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kathua">Kathua</keyword> rape case are sentenced to life imprisonment. The court earlier today convicted the main accused, <keyword id="6347479" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sanji-Ram">Sanji Ram</keyword>, for the murder and rape of 8-year old girl last year in Kathua district in Jammu and Kashmir. The rest six accused in the Kathua rape case are convicted under three sections including Ranbir Penal Codes' Sections 201 (pertaining to the disappearance of evidence) and 120-B (pertaining to criminal conspiracy). Those convicted include former revenue official Sanji Ram, Special Police Officers Deepak Khajuria and Surinder Kumar, two investigating officers -- head constable Tilak Raj and sub-inspector Anand Dutta and Parvesh Kumar. One of the accused, Vishal, was acquitted due to lack of evidence, while the juvenile accused is going to face a separate trial following a petition. Ram's son Vishal is acquitted due to lack of evidence, while an accused juvenile faces a separate trial. His trial is yet to begin as a petition to determine his age is waiting judgement in the Jammu and Kashmir High Court. The 8-year-old girl was kidnapped and held captive at a village temple in Kathua district on January 10 last year, said the charge sheet. The 15-page charge sheet against the accused had said that the eight-year-old girl, who was kidnapped on January 10 last year, was raped in captivity in a small village temple in Kathua district after having been sedated for four days before she was bludgeoned to death. She was drugged, starved and repeatedly raped for days. She was finally strangled and her head was bashed in with a rock. Her mutilated body was found in a forest area on January 17. Three days later, one of the accused -- reportedly a juvenile -- was arrested by police, the charge sheet said. (With IANS)

In a bid to enhance vigil along the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=indo-pak+border&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">India Pakistan border</a> in Punjab and keep a tight vigil on <keyword id="36725" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Infiltration">infiltration</keyword>, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=BSF&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Border Security Force</a> (BSF) has installed a dozen of laser walls have been made operational. 
 
Presently, eight laser beams are operational and other four will be in place in coming days. 
 
This decision was taken two years back keeping vulnerability along the border in mind. 
 
After the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=pathankot&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Pathankot attacks</a>, where it was suspected that terrorists crossed over from Pakistan by breaching the border from Bamiyal area in Punjab, the home ministry and BSF sped up the deployment and activation of these walls along the long and winding border. 
 
According to the blueprint, the BSF along with a team of technical experts will be conducting a pilot project for deploying "technological solutions" for effective border guarding at two "sensitive" riverine stretches in Jammu sector which entails deployment of smart sensors to pick up suspected movements along the international border. 
 
"The laser walls have started working and their functioning is being monitored. Preliminary results in detecting illegal movements are encouraging," an official said.

BSF tightens vigil along India-Pakistan border in Punjab, activates laser walls

Security forces on Monday killed all four terrorists, who carried out a series of planned attacks in Punjab’s <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Gurdaspur+">Gurdaspur</a> district, according to Reuters. The gun battle between the security forces and terrorists continued for more than ten hours.

 The terrorists first struck a bus in Dinanagar at around 5 a.m., injuring four passengers. According to police, the militants also shot dead a roadside vendor near Dinanagar bypass before entering the <keyword id="2970347" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dinanagar-police">Dinanagar police</keyword> station where they injured five policemen.

The air tickets from other cities like Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Surat and others have also increased. One of the biggest reasons for the spikes in airfare is the unavailability of train tickets. Three-fold rise in airfares to Patna from Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata ahead of festivals

New Delhi, Strong tremors jolted large swathes of north India, including Delhi-NCR, on Tuesday night as an earthquake of magnitude 6.6 struck the Hindu Kush region in Afghanistan. People rushed out of their homes and came out on the streets as the powerful temblor shook the mountainous region at 10.17 pm. There was no immediate report of any loss of life or damage to property. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the epicentre of the earthquake was 133 km south-southeast of Fayzabad in Afghanistan with a focal depth of 156 km. At least five people were injured in neighbouring Pakistan, where the magnitude of the earthquake was 6.8 and tremors were felt in cities such as Islamabad, Peshawar, Lahore and Rawalpindi. At the time of the earthquake, a stampede was reported in a market in Rawalpindi, The Express Tribune newspaper reported. In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa province, at least five members of a family were injured after a roof of their house collapsed in Swabi, the report stated. In India, the earthquake was felt across northern region, including Delhi-NCR, Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan. A resident in Rajasthan's Sri Ganganagar district said he felt three tremors back to back. A senior seismologist said the reason why people in northwest India and Delhi felt the tremors for a relatively longer time is because the "depth of the fault was more than 150 km". People in northern India first felt the primary waves and then were impacted by the secondary waves, he said. According to the NCS, the epicentre of the earthquake was located at 36.09 degrees north on the latitude and 71.35 degrees east on the longitude with a focal depth of 156 km. There were disruptions in mobile services in some parts of the Jammu region immediately after the earthquake, an official said. In east Delhi's Shakarpur, anxious people filled the congested lanes after claims by some that a building had tilted, but it turned out to be a false alarm. Two fire tenders were rushed to south-east Delhi's Jamia Nagar after a call claimed that a building was leaning there, officials said, adding further information is awaited. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted, "Strong tremors were felt across Delhi-NCR. Hope you all are safe." A Noida resident said he first noticed the dining table shaking. "Soon after we saw that the fans were also shaking. The earthquake was strong in terms of intensity and stayed for a relatively longer period," the resident of Hyde Park society in Noida said. A cab owner in Delhi said he felt the earthquake while he was waiting for passengers. "I was waiting for passengers and suddenly my car started shaking. I immediately shouted and alerted my friends," said cab owner Ramesh Pawar, who was near Connaught Place in central Delhi. Jyoti, a resident of Lajpat Nagar in south Delhi, said she was watching television when she suddenly saw the TV and sofa were shaking. Initially, she ignored it but when her husband alerted her, she and her family members rushed out of their home. "I ignored it initially but as soon as my husband alerted, I felt the earthquake too. This time it was strong and the sofa I was sitting on started shaking a bit. We rushed outside our home. Thankfully, we are on the ground floor, so in such situations, we have an easy escape," she said. Ghaziabad-resident Inderjeet Kaur said, "We felt the tremors for nearly 30 seconds and rushed out of our home." Jagdish Patwal, a resident of a high-rise apartment building in Noida, said, "The sofa, fan were shaking and people climbed down from the 20th floor." Chatter about the possible epicentre of the earthquake and memories of the destruction caused by a series of temblors in Turkiye dominated the discussions in the groups of people who rushed out of their homes. The tremors also sparked panic in Rajasthan as people rushed out of buildings as a precautionary measure and enquired about the earthquake from others. In Punjab and Haryana and their common capital Chandigarh, people rushed out of their homes during the tremors. "I was about to go to sleep when I suddenly felt a strong tremor. I along with my wife and two children rushed downstairs," said Ajay Kumar, who lives on the third floor of a residential society in Chandigarh. In Zirakpur, a town in Punjab which is on the outskirts of Chandigarh and has many high-rise residential societies, panic-stricken people rushed out of their homes and gathered in open parks. Reports from many places in Punjab, including Pathankot, Mohali, Jalandhar, Phagwara and Ludhiana, said strong tremors were felt. There were similar reports from many places in Haryana, including Panchkula, Ambala, Karnal and parts of the National Capital Region. In Himachal Pradesh, people in Shimla, Mandi and several other places rushed to safety. "Tremors were felt in all the 12 districts of the state but no loss of life or damage to property has been reported," Special Secretary Disaster Management Sudesh Mokta told PTI. Hundreds of residents rushed out of their homes in Noida - that houses scores of high-rise apartments -- in the wake of the strong tremors. Among those who rushed in panic were the elderly, women and young children while some residents also carried their pets with them. "I was watching a TV serial when I felt the earthquake. It was scary and I counted till 10 in my mind," Rajesh Kumar, a senior citizen who lives on the first floor of Supertech Capetown in Sector 74, told PTI moments after his family and he reached outside their building. Several people opted for staircases and avoided lifts during the rush. "Those living on the upper floors are the ones who suffer the most in emergency situations," said Mansi, who accompanied a sick friend of hers as they climbed down from the 15th floor of a residential tower. Once on the ground outside the towers, many people were seen calling up their contacts and checking on them for their safety while some even took to video calls to show the crowds that surrounded them. Strong tremors jolt Delhi-NCR, other parts of north India; no immediate loss of life or property reported

Chandigarh, Apr 20 () Over 1,000 Kashmiris, who had been stuck in Punjab's Pathankot due to the ongoing COVID-19 lockdown, were sent home on Monday, an official statement said.Nearly 1,200 migrants were stranded in Pathankot after the Jammu and Kashmir administration had refused them entry in the union territory, it said.The Kashmiri migrants had reached Pathankot from various states and on Monday the J-K government allowed them to return to the union territory, the Punjab government's statement said.It said the migrants were provided shelter, food and lodging during their stay in nine quarantine facilities of Pathankot."They were provided 24X7 support, with proper board and lodging, as well as food. Medical teams were deployed round-the-clock for regular health checkups and for providing them with regular supply of medicines," Punjab DGP Dinkar Gupta said in the statement.The Kashmiri migrants acknowledged the support provided to them by the state government, specially the Punjab Police, it said."The Punjab Police has been a warm host for 20 days in these dark days," said a resident of Jammu and Kashmir's Ramban district.They also expressed gratitude to Radha Soami Dera Beas and other organisations who helped them during this critical time, the statement said. Jammu, July 6 () The Jammu and Kashmir administration is setting up dedicated terminals and counters at Lakhanpur to ensure registration and medical sampling of all pilgrims on their arrival in the Union Territory for the upcoming annual Amarnath yatra, an official spokesman said on Monday. The decision was taken during a discussion on the entry mechanism of intending pilgrims at Lakhanpur along the Jammu-Pathankot highway between Jammu Divisional Commissioner Sanjeev Verma and the Kathua district administration, the spokesman said. He said Verma along with Inspector General of Police, Jammu, Mukesh Singh visited Lakhanpur to oversee the arrangements for the yatra to the 3,880 -meter-high holy cave shrine of Amarnath in south Kashmir Himalayas later this month. This year, the annual yatra is being held in a restricted manner in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. The spokesman said the divisional commissioner also called for making adequate arrangements for boarding and lodging facilities of pilgrims in case the yatra is halted due to any emergency. While reviewing security arrangements, Verma directed police to deploy adequate number of personnel at Lakhanpur and at all important yatra points. Meanwhile, District Development Commissioner, Ramban, Nazim Zai Khan, also reviewed the arrangements, being put in place to ensure smooth conduct of the yatra, at a high-level meeting. Khan constituted various committees to monitor arrangements besides ensuring implementation of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to the prevent spread of COVID-19, the spokesman said. Keeping in view COVID-19 pandemic challenges, Khan directed 'langer' organisers and officers to allow only those 'sewadars' (workers) in their kitchens who have latest COVID-19 negative reports besides ensuring prohibition on use of polythene bags and other such materials. Pathankot, May 5 () In her crusade against the coronavirus, a 34-year-old gold medallist in visual arts is making giant hoardings of the "corona devil" to raise awareness about lockdown in Punjab's Pathankot city.Renu Kashyap, along with her brothers Yogesh Pal Sunny and Gagandeep, is spreading the message why it is important to stay home, wear masks and gloves and follow social-distancing norms.During the pandemic, people are contributing to support government efforts in different ways, and Kashyap said she is doing it through paintings."We can see several people still violating the lockdown norms who ignored the frequent administration appeals after which I, as an artist, have made planning to spread awareness about COVID-19," the junior research fellow in visual arts said.She started her campaign against the virus after Pathankot Deputy Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Khaira got "impressed" by her idea during a discussion."We have planned to draw images and slogans on 10 different locations in the city. Five have been done," said Kashyap, who has got a two-year fellowship in the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. "At a particular point, giant images of a corona devil with size near about 20 by 20 feet were being made by me and my two brothers. It's my way to fight against the global pandemic," she added.Kashyap has received three state awards from former Jammu and Kashmir Governor N N Vohra for her work on sculptures.Additional Deputy Commissioner Abhijeet Kaplash said this is a great move by her to spread awareness. Azhar has been responsible for multiple deadly terrorist attacks in India, claiming the lives of hundreds in the country. India had renewed its bid to designate Masood Azhar as a global terrorist following a terror attack in Pulwama that killed over 44 paramilitary policemen on February 15, 2019. India accused Masood Azhar of training militants and planning several terror attacks in the country including the 2001 Parliament attack and the recent Pulwama attack. Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) has ties with other terror groups has ties with other groups including Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi. In 2002, The group was banned in Pakistan. However, US authorities have claimed that they have been carrying out there operation freely. The Indian security forces t<a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/mail-today/story/averted-2-pulwama-like-attacks-security-forces-1477587-2019-03-14">racked down</a> 18 terrorists after Pulwama, 14 of which were from JeM. 2001 attack on Indian Parliament Parliament Terrorist groups Jaish-e-Mohammad and Lashkar-e-Taiba were also responsible for the attack on the Indian parliament in 2001. A group of armed terrorists had entered the Parliament of India, opening fire and killing nine. The terrorists also died in the encounter. Even though both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha had been adjourned before the attack took place, many Indian politicians were still believed to have been inside the building when the terrorists entered. 2008 - Mumbai attack Azhar was also responsible for the ghastly attacks in posh hotels and public places in Mumbai in 2008 that left at least 174 people dead. The attacks which were a series of shooting and bombing attacks had lasted for four days in November 2008, in Mumbai’s prime locations. The attack is still considered to be one of the most deadly ones in the world. 2016 - Pathankot air base attack Masood Azhar was also held responsible for being the mastermind of the terror attack that took place at Pathankot air base, in India, on 2 January 2016. The attack led to a breakdown in India-Pakistan relation that has been undergoing tussles over Kashmir from years. The attack initially killed four attackers and two security personnel with one more security personnel dying from injuries hours after the attack. 2019 - Pulwama attack Forty-five paramilitary soldiers lost their lives in Pulwama, Kashmir on Thursday in a terror attack. The Pulwama attack took place around 3.15 p.m. on 14 February 2019 when a 'Fidayeen' bomber belonging to the Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) terror outfit rammed an explosive-laden SUV into a bus carrying CRPF troopers in Lethpora area of Pulwama district on the Srinagar-Jammu Highway.
