Militants attacked a security forces party at a 'naka' in Kreeri area of Baramulla district in north Kashmir this morning, a police official said. He said two CRPF personnel and a special police officer (SPO) of Jammu and Kashmir police were killed in the firing. Security forces have cordoned off the area and a hunt has been launched to nab the militants. Three killed in Jammu and Kashmir amid militant attack

<keyword id="6354495" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="kashmir">Kashmir</keyword> has been a political issue for the longest and as is with such politically charged situations, there are rumors abound. However, for a lot of us, the real timeline is either unknown or has become hazy over a period of time. So, here is a complete timeline of what has happened-bare facts of how the state of Jammu&amp;Kasmir has unraveled over the last seven decades. 
 
 
 
1947 – The British rule ended in India and the nation was divided into mainly Hindu India and Muslim-majority state of <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=Pakistan&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">Pakistan</a>. 
 1947 – The Pakistan tribal army starts attacking the <keyword id="3744025" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="kashmir-region">Kashmir region</keyword> and the Maharaja of Kashmir signs a treaty of accession with India. War breaks out between India and Pakistan over the region. 
 1948 – India raises <keyword id="64132" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kashmir-issue">Kashmir issue</keyword> in the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=UN+Security+Council&amp;sortorder=effectivedate">UN Security Council</a>, which in Resolution 47 calls for a referendum on the status of the territory. It aslo calls on Pakistan to withdraw its troops and India to cut its military presence to a minimum. A ceasefire comes into force, but Pakistan refuses to evacuate its troops. Kashmir is for practical purposes partitioned. 
 1951 – Elections are held in the Indian-administered state of Jammu and Kashmir back accession to India. India feels that this makes a referendum <keyword id="6355835" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="UN">un</keyword>necessary. The UN and Pakistan say a referendum needs to take into account the views of voters throughout the former princely state. 
 
 
 1953 - Pro-Indian authorities arrest and dismiss Prime Minister <keyword id="293003" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Sheikh-Abdullah">Sheikh Abdullah</keyword>, leader of the governing <keyword id="43898" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="National-Conference">National Conference</keyword>, as he takes a pro-referendum stance and delays formal accession to India. A new Jammu and Kashmir government ratifies accession to India. 
 
1957 - The constitution of Indian-administrated Jammu and Kashmir defines it as part of India. 
 
 
 1950s - China gradually occupies eastern Kashmir (<keyword id="71796" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Aksai-Chin">Aksai Chin</keyword>). 
 1962 – a war starts between India and China and China defeats India in a short war for control of <keyword id="3978218" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="aksai-china">Aksai China</keyword>. 
 
1963 - Pakistan cedes the Trans-Karakoram Tract of Kashmir to China. 
 
 
 
1965 - A small war between Indian and Pakistan over Kashmir starts and ends in a ceasefire and a return to the previous positions. 
 
1971-72 - Another Indo-Pakistan war ends in defeat for Pakistan and leads to the 1972 Simla Agreement.This turns the Kashmir ceasefire line into the Line of Control, pledges both sides to settle their differences through negotiations, and calls for a final settlement of the Kashmir dispute. The Agreement forms the basis of Pakistani-Indian relations thereafter. 
 
 
 
1974 - The Opposition Plebiscite Front in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir drops demand for a referendum in return for extensive autonomy in an agreement with the Indian government. Sheikh Abdullah becomes chief minister, and his political dynasty continues to dominate the National Conference and state after his death in 1982. 
 
 
 1984 - <keyword id="6354416" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-Army">Indian Army</keyword> gains control over the Siachen Glacier, an area not demarcated by the Line of Control. Pakistan has been making frequent attempts to capture the area in the following decades. 
 1987 - Disputed state elections in Indian-administrated Jammu and Kashmir give a thrust to a pro-independence insurgency centred around the Jammu and <keyword id="307591" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kashmir-Liberation-Front">Kashmir Liberation Front</keyword> (<keyword id="94546" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="JKLF">JKLF</keyword>). India also accuses Pakistan of fomenting the insurgency by despatching fighters across the Line of Control, which Pakistan denies. 
 
 
 
1990 - The insurgency escalates after the Indian Army kills about 100 demonstrators at Gawakadal Bridge. Attacks and threats lead to the flight of almost all Hindus from the Kashmir Valley area of the state. India imposes Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Jammu and Kashmir. 
 
1990s - The insurgency keeps on continuing, with Kashmiri militants training in Pakistan and India deploying hundreds of thousands of troops in Jammu and Kashmir. It’s the civilians that have been facing violence by both sides. 
 
1999 - India and Pakistan go to war again after militants cross from Pakistani-administered Kashmir into the Indian-administered Kargil district. India repulses the attack, accuses Pakistan of being behind it, and breaks off relations. 
 2001-2004 - Moves to boost relations between the two countries are punctuated by continuing violence, notably an attack on the parliament of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir in <keyword id="41568" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Srinagar">Srinagar</keyword> in 2001. 
 
2010 - Major protests erupt in the Kashmir Valley of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir over the summer after a demonstrator is killed by the Indian army. The protests abate in September after the government announce measures to ease tension. 
 2011 August - Chief Minister <keyword id="19464" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Omar-Abdullah">Omar Abdullah</keyword> announces an amnesty for the 1,200 young men who threw stones at security forces during the anti-government protests in the Kashmir Valley in 2010. Indian <keyword id="64385" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="State-Human-Rights-Commission">State Human Rights Commission</keyword> confirms presence of more than 2,000 unidentified bodies in unmarked graves near the Line of Control. Activists say many may be people who disappeared after being arrested by security forces.

2014 August - India cancels talks with Pakistan after accusing it of interfering in India's internal affairs. The decision comes after Pakistan's High Commissioner in Delhi consulted Kashmiri separatist leaders in advance of the talks.

2014 October - Pakistan and India exchange strongly-worded warnings, after a flare-up of violence across their common border leaves at least 18 people dead.

The attack took place at Lechpora, about 30 kilometres from Srinagar in Kashmir’s Pulwama district when a van packed with explosives rammed into a bus carrying security personnel, IANS reported citing police sources. The incident took place when some 2,547 CRPF personnel were coming in a convoy of 78 vehicles from the transit camp in Jammu and headed to Srinagar. According to the IANS report, the death toll could rise as some of the injured personnel of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were in a serious condition. The Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack.  The Pulwana attack is the worst since militancy erupted in 1989. On Thursday afternoon, a suicide bomber reportedly rammed an SUV packed with explosives into a bus carrying CRPF security personnel, killing at least 42 and injuring many others. The bus was part of a 78-vehicle convoy that was travelling on the the Srinagar-Jammu highway in Pulwama district. The Pakistan-based Jaish-e-Moahammad (JeM) has claimed responsibility for the bloodbath and released a video clip of the suicide bomber which it claimed was shot before the young man carried out the audacious attack in Lethpora, about 30 km from here. The group said one of its commanders, Adil Ahmad Dar, was the suicide bomber. Police sources and other officials told IANS the suicide bomber-driven SUV came along the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) bus when the 78-vehicle convoy carrying 2,547 security personnel was going from the transit camp in Jammu to Srinagar and rammed it into the bus around 3.15 p.m., triggering a deafening explosion. The first report spoke of eight deaths. But the death toll quickly mounted. The bus was said to be transporting 39 troopers. CRPF officials told IANS the bus was the main target of the militants and was destroyed fully while another CRPF vehicle was partly damaged. India vows an ‘unforgettable lesson’ for the terrorists who killed 42 troopers

<ul><li><keyword id="52395" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Baramulla">Baramulla</keyword> constituency close to the Line of Control is a sensitive and volatile area.</li><li>Voter turnout in the first phase of polling on April 11 was 35%, according to reports.</li><li>The state of <keyword id="23412" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jammu-Kashmir">Jammu &amp; Kashmir</keyword> recorded a voter turnout of 54.49% until 5 pm. </li><li>Incidents of stone-pelting and glitches in the electronic voting machines may have also affected the voter turnout.</li></ul>Over 35% of voters turned up to<a href="https://www.outlookindia.com/newsscroll/amid-allegations-of-emv-malfunction-jk-records-over-55-voter-turnout/1514218"> vote</a> on April 11 in Baramulla, a district that stretches to the edge of the tense Line of Control that divides India and Pakistan, in the state of Kashmir. The Baramulla district has been a hotbed of Kashmiri militancy and a haven for separatists up in arms against the Indian state for years. However, earlier this year, the Kashmir Police declared that <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/explained/explained-what-a-militant-free-baramulla-kashmir-means-5554270/">the district had become ‘militant free’</a>. Glitches in the electronic voting machines and stone-pelting protestors may have also affected the voter turnout. That over a third of the registered voters in the constituency still turned up to vote can be read as a mixed signal, at best. In the state of Jammu and Kashmir, two constituencies Jammu and Baramulla went to polls today. The voter turnout in the state as a whole was recorded to be at 54.49% until 5 pm, according to the Election Commission. The state of Jammu &amp; Kashmir in totality had recorded a voter turnout of 49.52% in the 2014 General Elections, meanwhile Baramulla alone had recorded 39.14% and Jammu had recorded 67.99%. The voter count in the strife-torn areas of Kashmir is a significant signal to assess the appeal of the Indian democracy in the region that sees violent outbursts by separatists, frequently. Expectations were high this time, as the voter turnout in the Panchayat (local administration) elections in Kashmir held in December 2018 saw an average voter turnout of 74%. A Kashmiri constituency on the edge of India-Pakistan border sees a 35% voter turnout

<ul><li>On April 11, two constituencies from the state of Jammu &amp; Kashmir – Baramulla and Jammu – will go to polls. </li><li>For the state, which has been at the centre of terrorist attacks, violence by separatists, civil disobedience and protests, elections hold major significance. </li><li>The separatist mindset however continues to cloud the state’s democratic potential, directly or indirectly. </li></ul>Jammu and Kashmir, home to the world’s highest <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-41432568">battleground</a>, has only six seats in the Indian Parliament, but it is almost always at the centre of the country’s political discourse. On April 11, two constituencies – Baramulla and Jammu – will go to polls. Both Baramulla and Jammu are important constituencies with over 1.3 million and 1.8 million voters respectively. For the state, which has been at the centre of terrorist attacks, violence by separatists, civil disobedience and protests, and the major point of contention between India and Pakistan, elections hold major significance. In Baramulla, colleges are shut for 7 days to ensure peaceful polling, whereas high security is in place across the state so as to avoid any violence during the elections. While Kashmiri separatists have called for <a href="https://www.thestatesman.com/elections-2019/separatists-call-boycott-lok-sabha-elections-beginning-thursday-1502744485.html">boycott of polls</a>, parties like Peoples Democratic Party and J&amp;K National Conference, have come to <a href="https://www.asianage.com/india/all-india/280319/separatists-poll-boycott-call-may-fall-flat.html">realise</a> that the boycott of polls only works in the benefit of other major parties like <keyword id="14666" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="BJP">BJP</keyword> and the Indian National Congress. The separatist mindset however continues to cloud the state’s democratic potential, directly or indirectly. On February 14, Pulwama saw one of the worst terrorist attacks in the history of the state with the death toll rising to over 40. Post the terrorist attack in Pulwama, over 100 Kashmiri separatists were <a href="https://www.reuters.com/article/us-india-kashmir/more-than-100-separatists-detained-in-kashmir-raids-in-pre-election-crackdown-idUSKCN1QC070">detained </a>by the J&amp;K so that there are no anti-election campaigns. India then retaliated with the Balakot air strike, where Indian Air Force planes crossed the de facto border in Kashmir. Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman was captured after the air strike by the Pakistani army, which further riled up the hostility between the two countries. Pakistan had then released the Wing Commander. But for the people of Kashmir, elections mean hopefully making way for an improvement in the situation in the state. Baramulla has been subject to multiple <a href="http://risingkashmir.com/news/baramulla-faces-developmental-challenges">developmental</a> challenges and the people blame the administration for the lack of progress. The voter turnout in the Panchayat (local administration) elections in Kashmir held in December 2018 saw an average voter <a href="https://scroll.in/article/905364/a-closer-look-voter-turnout-numbers-do-not-tell-the-whole-story-of-kashmirs-panchayat-elections">turnout </a>of 74%. The manifestos of the two major political parties – INC and the BJP, both give prominence to Kashmir. However, It will be an uphill task for the BJP because neither of the regional parties are friendly with the incumbent government at the centre. The state has been under President’s rule since December 2018 (which was declared after 6 months of Governor’s rule) and now, the Assembly elections have been reportedly pushed till June 2019. This was because of the fallout in the regional alliance between the central government’s ruling party BJP and the PDP. One of the major reasons behind the fallout between the two parties was the Kathua rape incident where an eight-year old girl was raped. Two senior BJP ministers, Lal Singh and Prakash Chander Ganga had then participated in a rally that supported of the accused in the case. Further, the BJP manifesto’s promise to revoke <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/bjp-manifesto-released-for-2019-lok-sabha-elections/articleshow/68774925.cms">the special status of J&amp;K and revoke Article 35-A, </a>which confers special rights on J&amp;K residents especially in the acquisition of property and eligibility for public sector jobs, will also be an overhang on the party’s chances in the valley. However, this is not the first time BJP has promised this. In 2014, the party had put the repealing of Article 370, which gives autonomous status to the state, in its manifesto. But it still managed to gain ground in the state elections held after that. The Congress party has said in its manifesto that the two acts will not be touched while the AFSPA and Disturbed Areas Act will be reviewed. The Armed Forces Special Powers Act, which gives the Army the power in disturbed areas, was implemented in Kashmir in 1990 and since then, has been a point of debate in the state. The India-Pakistan border in Kashmir is simmering again —  thousands of Amarnath pilgrims have been sent back due to terror threat

A meeting of Speakers unanimously decided that India will boycott a <keyword id="2990273" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="commonwealth-parliamentary-union">Commonwealth Parliamentary Union</keyword> meeting in <keyword id="3002" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Islamabad">Islamabad</keyword> next month in protest against Pakistan not inviting the Speaker of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, a decision that comes in the midst of tensions over two terror attacks in Punjab and J&amp;K. <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword> Speaker <keyword id="6354934" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sumitra-Mahajan">Sumitra Mahajan</keyword> said this was against a rule in the CPU in which all the Speakers, who are members of the <keyword id="112537" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Commonwealth-Parliamentary-Association">Commonwealth Parliamentary Association</keyword> (CPA), have to be extended an invitation to the CPU meeting. "It is wrong (on the part of Pakistan). They cited an old rule of 1951-57 regarding their having raised an issue in the <keyword id="55859" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="UN-Security-Council">UN Security Council</keyword> for not inviting J and K Speaker," she said adding it had lost relevance. Welcoming the decision J&amp;K Speaker <keyword id="684192" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ravindra-Gupta">Ravindra Gupta</keyword>, who attended the meeting, thanked the Speakers for the decision saying it was a question of unity and integrity of the country. He called Pakistan a terrorist state. "The meeting resolved to call upon Dr Shirin Chaudhury, Speaker of <keyword id="141158" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Bangladesh-Parliament">Bangladesh Parliament</keyword> and Chairperson of the CPA Executive Committee to use her good offices to immediately resolve the matter and ensure issue of invitation to the Jammu and Kashmir 'CPA Branch' failing which 'CPA India Region' including the Union and State Branches' (will) boycott the 61st Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference in Islamabad, Pakistan from September 30 to October 8...," the resolution said. 

	India's Parliament and Assemblies are treated as 'India region' and all the Assemblies are the members of the CPA. 

	The resolution underlined that Jammu and Kashmir "fulfills all conditions" of CPA membership. 
 

	"The meeting further resolved that Chairperson and members of the Executive Committee of CPA view this matter in all seriousness and insist that Pakistan CPA Branch forfeit its right to host the 61st CP conference for not inviting Jammu and Kashmir CPA Branch to the conference in violation of Article 8 of the CPA Constitution and that the venue of the conference be shifted to another country,” it said.

	Article 8 of the CPA Constitution says that each 'Branch' (meaning Parliament and State Assemblies) "shall be entitled to send prescribed number of delegates and officials to each plenary conference and accordingly Jammu and Kashmir Branch is entitled to send one delegate to the Conference." 
 

	The meeting authorised Lok Sabha Speaker, who is the chairperson of CPA India Region, to take "such further action as may be deemed necessary in the matter". 
 

	Gupta said Pakistan deliberately wanted to keep his state away from the conference to "humiliate" India. 
 

	He said Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and thanked the Lok Sabha Speaker and Speakers of other Assemblies on taking the stand. 
 

	Gupta added that "Pakistan is a terrorist state and many countries do not want to go there" to attend the Conference.  The CPA Secretariat talked to <keyword id="2990321" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Pakistan-Assembly">Pakistan Assembly</keyword> Speaker who expressed "constraint" in inviting Jammu and Kashmir. Invitations for the conference are sent by the host country. 

	Gupta said Pakistan deliberately wanted to keep his state away from the conference to "humiliate" India. 
 

	He said Jammu and Kashmir is an integral part of India and thanked the Lok Sabha Speaker and Speakers of other Assemblies on taking the stand.

 The conversation happened in response to the Indian government’s decision to revoke the special status of Kashmir — bifurcating it into two union territories of Ladakh, and Jammu and Kashmir. Trump also spoke with Modi to discuss US-India strategic partnership, the White House said. According to IANS, Modi countered the anti-Indian venom coming from Pakistani leaders, saying that, "extreme rhetoric and incitement to anti-India violence by certain leaders in the region was not conducive to peace." Hindu supremacy Khan had earlier alleged that Modi was turning India into a Hindu supremacist country. “Pakistan strongly condemns and rejects the announcements made today by the Indian Government regarding the Indian Occupied Jammu &amp; Kashmir. As a result, they’re being forced to leave their colleges and return home out of fear for their lives. On Sunday, 20 female Kashmiri students were forced to barricade themselves in a hostel in Dehradun, the state capital of Uttarakhand, as a mob raged outside. The mob reportedly claimed that the students had declared pro-Pakistan and anti-India slogans - a claim <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/kashmiri-students-staying-outside-jk-face-backlash/articleshow/68040425.cms">they denied</a>. There were also reports of Kashmiri students in Punjab, <a href="https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/facing-threats-abuses-kashmiri-students-return-to-valley/article26297585.ece">Haryana and Maharashtra</a> being assaulted as police forces received distress calls in these states. Some students were also booked for reportedly “celebrating” the attack on social media. Meanwhile, at Aligarh Muslim University, Kashmiri students have been issued directions to “not leave campus”. To make matters worse, two colleges in Dehradun even issued a decree temporarily <a href="https://indianexpress.com/article/india/in-dehradun-two-colleges-say-wont-admit-kashmiris-5588503/">banning the admission of students</a> from Jammu &amp; Kashmir, citing safety concerns amid aggressive protests from student unions allied with the <keyword id="42498" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="RSS">RSS</keyword> like the ABVP, VHP and <keyword id="6365937" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="bajrang-dal">Bajrang Dal</keyword>. In fact, in order to placate the student mob, which numbered in the hundreds, the head of the Baba Farid Institute of Technology, Dr Aslam Siddiqui, said that any students engaging in “anti-national” activities would be expelled and that no Kashmiri students would be admitted in the next academic session. The same stance was taken by S K Chauhan, the head of Dehradun’s Alpine College of Management and Technology. The day before, on Saturday, the Delhi Commission for Minorities, a minority rights panel, reportedly said that the local protests in the wake of the Pulwama attack were being co-opted by Hindutva groups <a href="https://thewire.in/communalism/minorities-panel-says-hindutva-groups-using-pulwama-to-target-muslims-kashmiris">to target Kashmiris and Muslims</a>. <ul><li><keyword id="174501" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="ISIS">ISIS</keyword> is claiming a new terrority in India called '<keyword id="7621724" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Wilayah-of-Hind">Wilayah of Hind</keyword>'.</li><li>The country's intelligence agencies are denying all claims. </li><li>Announcing a new branch of ISIS is seen as a part of their strategy to maintain the image of strengthening global affiliations after it was pushed out from the Middle East. </li></ul>The <keyword id="304620" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Islamic-State">Islamic State</keyword> terror group that goes by the name ISIS is claiming that it has a ‘new province’ in India. According to the terror outfit’s broadcast channel, Amaq News, their territory in India is called ‘Wilayah of Hind’ (India Province). But, top officials in the Indian state of Jammu &amp; <keyword id="6354495" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="kashmir">Kashmir</keyword> as well as the country’s intelligence agencies are categorically denying these claims -- in spite of a clash between the region’s militants and the Indian Military, on Friday. Conflicting claims According to a statement by ISIS via the messaging app, Telegram, the clash between the groups occurred in the Amshipora village of Kashmir. Media reports, on the same day, reported that a militant was killed — Ishfaq Sofi a.k.a Abdullah Bhai of Islamic State <keyword id="17605" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jammu-and-kashmir">Jammu and Kashmir</keyword> (ISJK). It was then that ISIS began to claim responsibility for attacks against the Indian Military in Kashmir since 2017. Intelligence agencies and the Director General of Jammu Kashmir Police, Dilbagh Singh, said that the terrorist who died wasn’t from ISIS from an ‘IS-inspired’ group. While he could be potentially influenced by the ideology of IS, he ‘definitely’ did not belong to the group nor has the outfit any footprint in Kashmir. To be fair, ISIS also hasn’t lent any details about the geographic boundaries of their newly founded ‘province’. Not the first time Laying claim to a territory an ISIS ‘province’ is not new for the terror organisation. They’ve reportedly declared a Turkey Province and Central Africa province as well.  These claims may have been rubbished since there was never anything in place that resembled actual governance but Rita Katz, director of the SITE Intelligence Group, warns that they shouldn’t simply be written off either. (with IANS inputs)

ISIS claims it has a new province in Kashmir, India refutes

<ul><li>Addressing the unemployment crisis in the valley, PM Modi said that the residents in <keyword id="17605" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jammu-and-kashmir">Jammu and Kashmir</keyword> will now be benefited from the <keyword id="1876501" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="PM-scholarship-scheme">PM Scholarship Scheme</keyword>. </li><li>The government is planning to establish colleges including Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Management (IIMs), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMs). </li><li>It has recently revised the scholarship amount for girls from ₹2,250 to ₹3,000 per month and ₹2,000 to ₹2,500 for boys. </li><li>In 2016, the government launched the IIM Jammu campus. </li></ul>India’s Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> doled out benefits to Kashmiri youth in his first speech after bifurcating Jammu and Kashmir. He said that the youth will be able to now benefit from the <a href="https://www.dqindia.com/pm-narendra-modi-promises-scholarships-jobs-benefits-youth-jammu-kashmir/">PM Scholarship Scheme</a>, which provides house rent allowance and other aid to students affected by war and other activities. The Prime Minister Scholarship Scheme (PMSS) was introduced by the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2006.  The scheme will provide 500 more scholarships to the wards of those martyred in naxal or terror attacks. In its latest push to create education and employment in the naxal affected areas, the Modi government expanded the scholarship programme. The scholarship amount was revised by from ₹2,250 to ₹3,000 per month for girls; and ₹2,000 to ₹2,500 for boys. The government is also planning to set up elite institutes including Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), Indian Institute of Management (IIMs), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMs) in the newly formed union territory. The government had already launched IIM Jammu campus in 2016. The institute is also expected to have an off-campus centre in Srinagar, India Today <a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/education-today/news/story/hrd-minister-ramesh-pokhriyal-to-unveil-iim-jammu-s-new-website-and-logo-1575601-2019-07-31">reported</a> citing the officials of Human Resource and Development Ministry(MHRD). “Now my youth of J&amp;K will lead the development work and take the region to new heights,” Modi said.
