<p>While marquee names like Cliff Lee, Jeff Samardzija and Hunter Pence were mentioned in trade discussions, they were not moved because teams found the asking prices too high.</p>
<p>Take Phillies starter Cliff Lee for example. The <keyword id="374669" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Boston-Red-Sox">Boston Red Sox</keyword> were in desperate need of a front end starting pitcher with the return of ace Clay Buchholz now believed to be somewhere in <a href="http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2013/07/23/clay-buchholz-cautious-about-return-red-sox/dag10uDY5hLxVRkFWlzblI/story.html">late August or early September</a>. The Phillies were willing to part ways with Lee, who is 10-4 with a 3.05 ERA and 1.01 WHIP, but reportedly <a href="https://twitter.com/nickcafardo/status/362243925190250497">sought top Red Sox</a> prospect <a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=bogaer001xan">Xander Bogaerts</a> in return. All indications are that Bogaerts is the real deal at shortstop.</p>
<p>Yesterday FOX's Ken Rosenthal <a href="http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/boston-red-sox-will-not-trade-top-prospect-xander-bogaerts-for-cliff-lee-073013">wrote a piece</a> criticizing the Red Sox' unwillingness to flip Bogaerts for Lee. He compared the potential move to the 2005 trade that netted starter Josh Beckett in exchange for then top prospect Hanley Ramirez. Beckett went on to pitch lights out for the Sox and dominated the 2007 postseason on the way to a World Series Championship. </p>
<p>However, the Red Sox now look smart for not dealing their best shortstop prospect.</p>
<p>Last night they traded their second-best young shortstop, <a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=iglesi001jos">Jose Iglesias</a>, in a <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2013/07/30/white-sox-trade-jake-peavy-to-red-sox-three-team-trade-jose-iglesias-avisail-garcia/2601729/">three-team deal</a> that brought them former White Sox starter <keyword id="1786079" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jake-Peavy">Jake Peavy</keyword>. Peavy (4.28 ERA and 1.14 WHIP) is no Lee, but the gap between the two is smaller than the difference between Iglesias and Bogaerts.</p>

Iglesias is a defensive whiz, but has never hit for a lick before batting an incredibly lucky .330 in 63 big league games this season. In four minor league seasons, Iglesias was a .257 hitter with six home runs. Bogaerts is a .296 hitter with 53 homers in four minor league seasons. On top of that Bogaerts is 20, while Iglesias is 23.</p>
<p>Faced with two options, Bogaerts for Lee or Iglesias for Peavy, the Red Sox chose to keep the better prospect. <a href="http://espn.go.com/blog/dallas/texas-rangers/post/_/id/4893806/olney-teams-hesitant-to-deal-prospects">ESPN's Buster Olney</a> recently wrote about <keyword id="23398" type="SPORT" weightage="60" keywordseo="Baseball">baseball</keyword>'s prospect infatuation, quoting baseball executives who talked about the overvaluation of unproven talent. </p>
<p>The Red Sox acquired a proven, big-time arm in Peavy (a rare commodity) for a weak-hitting, rangy middle infielder (those guys are dime-a-dozen). </p>
<p>Baseball management has changed dramatically since Billy Beane's "Moneyball" days. But Beane's edge was in exposing gaps in market value, wherever they may be, not simply in acquiring cheap talent with high on-base percentages.</p>
<p>It wasn't long ago that teams were willing to move multiple prospects in return for major arms, and there are <a href="http://www.beyondtheboxscore.com/2013/7/2/4485218/2013-trade-deadline-2008-review-cc-sabathia-manny-ramirez">several</a> <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/dallas/mlb/news/story?id=5367615">great</a> <a href="http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2534459">examples</a> were the team selling the farm came out on the better end of the deal.</p>
<p>Whenever teams return to making such moves not only will they likely continue to come out winners, they will be giving up less.</p>
<p>All of this benefits big market teams with the available payroll to take on big contracts. As teams continue to overvalue prospects, look for the baseball's titans to pull off more trade deadline coups like their Peavy for Iglesias.</p>

Here's Why There Were No Blockbuster Deals Trades At The MLB Trade Deadline This Year

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"><p class="source"><span>Maddie Meyer/Getty</span></p></div><p></p></div></div></p><p>It's been a rough year for veteran MLB pitcher Jake Peavy.</p><p><a href="http://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/18742429/for-jake-peavy-baseball-take-back-seat">As detailed by ESPN's Jerry Crasnick</a>, Peavy is currently unsigned and waiting to sort out some personal matters before joining a team.</p><p>According to Crasnick, last February, Peavy fell victim to a Ponzi scheme orchestrated by a financial investor named Ash Narayan, who took money that was supposed to go into "conservative investments" and funneled it into a failed ticketing business.</p><p>The investigation went on through the 2016 MLB season while Peavy was with the San Francisco Giants and often required him to meet with lawyers and FBI agents between practices and games. Peavy said the ordeal took a mental toll on him.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"It turned my whole world upside-down. For the first time ever, it was hard to give my 150 percent focus, time and energy to baseball. It was such a tough year, because everything I have built and played for was jeopardized to some degree. When you've known people your whole life and career and they let you down and they're not who you thought you were, it's devastating.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"It turned me into a person I never wanted to be. People would text me and I'd say, 'What does this person want from me? What's their motive?' I had numerous relationships for 10-15 years with people who let me and my family down in a huge way."</p><p>According to Crasnick, Peavy lost "millions" in the ordeal.</p><p>To make matters worse, after the Giants' season ended, Peavy returned home where his wife asked for a divorce. Peavy is still going through the legal process while tending to his sons, according to Crasnick.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"I'm not shying away from getting divorced. It's not something I'm proud of or something I wanted or asked for, but it happened and I'm dealing with that. But I also have four boys I'm responsible for in life, and I just feel deep down that it's in my best interests and my family's interests to be there through this time.</p><p style="padding-left: 30px;">"When I sign with a team, I'm all in. For me to leave right now with so much uncertainty in my life, it wouldn't be fair to an organization and it wouldn't be the right thing to do as far as being a dad."</p><p>People around baseball still believe Peavy has something to offer to the game.</p><p>Peavy told Crasnick that he will return to baseball, as it's more than just a job to him. 35-year-old pitcher has put his career on hold after a hellish 12 months that included losing millions in a Ponzi scheme and going through a divorce

<p>He gave <a href="http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/2014/03/jake_peavy_explains_finger_injury.html">an account of the incident to the Boston Globe</a>:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"Went over to Bass Pro and bought them some rod and reels and they were combined. Just tried to cut them, because they were wire-tied, using my knife.</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"With my right hand holding the rod, with my left holding the knife and when I broke the wire tab [the knife] just stuck my knuckle pretty good."</p>
<p>So the injury came while unpacking fishing equipment with a knife, not cutting an actual fish.</p>
<p>Coach John Farrell said <a href="http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2014/03/03/jake-peavy-out-least-days-after-cutting-finger-household-accident/HDUODaUrTPPS5Ld9GbRKsK/story.html">he nearly cut his finger off</a>:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">"He was at home when it took place and he was trying to cut through something, and when it gave way, it almost cut through his finger."</p>

Red Sox Pitcher Nearly Cuts Off His Finger With A Fishing Knife

While home teams have won the last nine game 7s in the World Series, there is one area where the Giants have an advantage.</p>
<p>The projected starting lineup for the Giants in game 7 made $58.8 million this season, $17.3 million more than the Royals' starting lineup ($41.5 million). That gap is despite the Giants not starting any of their three highest-paid pitchers.</p>
<p>In fact, of the five highest-paid players on the World Series rosters, Hunter Pence is the only player that will start tonight's game. James Shields of the Royals ($12M) along with Matt Cain ($20M), Tim Lincecum ($17M), and Jake Peavy ($14.5M) of the Giants will start the game on the bench.</p>

Most Of The Highest-Paid Players In The World Series Will Not Start Game 7

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container float_right"><div class="image"><p class="source"><span>Reuters</span></p></div><p></p></div>A week ago, it looked like the trade deadline would be a complete dud  as Major League Baseball's new playoff format meant a lot of teams still had a chance of saving their season and making the playoffs.</p>
<p>Then, on the eve of deadline day, <a href="http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/story/trade-deadline-red-sox-cardinals-tigers-athletics-david-price-jon-lester-yoenis-cespedes-073114">Ken Rosenthal had this exchange</a> with an unnamed general manager:</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">GM: "This is the toughest market to read and get tractions on deals that I can remember."</p>
<p style="padding-left: 30px;">KR: "Lots of frustrated people ... Based on what I'm hearing, tomorrow could be a dud unless things change quickly."<span style="color: #373737; font-family: 'Lucida grande', 'Lucida Sans', 'Lucida Sans Unicode'; font-size: 16px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 25px; orphans: auto; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px; -webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; display: inline !important; float: none; background-color: #ffffff;"><br /></span></p>
<p>The problem was two-fold:</p>
<p><strong>1) Teams value their prospects more than ever.</strong></p>
<p>Teams have come to realize just how valuable young, cheap players can be in this era of $20 million-per-year contracts. The Dodgers and Mariners are two of the wealthiest teams in baseball and both wanted to add a starting pitcher. Yet, both made it clear throughout the process that they did not want to give up their top prospects to make a deal.</p>
<p><strong>2) Many more buyers than sellers</strong>.</p>
<p>The Red Sox had a full-blown fire sale, trading Jake Peavy, Felix Doubront, Jon Lester, Jonny Gomes, John Lackey, Andrew Miller, and Stephen Drew in a series of trades.  But the Red Sox were the exception. With as many as <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/baseballs-playoff-format-trade-deadline-2014-7">23 teams still with playoff hopes</a>, there were very few teams willing to part with difference-making big league players.</p>
<p>It was the perfect storm for a boring trade deadline. But then something strange happened.</p>
<p><strong>The game changed.</strong></p>
<p>Instead of playoff contenders trading prospects to non-contenders for veterans, teams exchanged big leaguers for big leaguers and playoff contenders traded with other playoff contenders.</p>
<p>In the end, there were 12 trades on deadline day alone and those deals involved seven players who have been named to an All-Star game, <a href="http://www.foxsports.com/mlb/story/trade-deadline-red-sox-cardinals-tigers-athletics-david-price-jon-lester-yoenis-cespedes-073114">the most since 1995</a>.</p>
<p>Young sluggers were traded (Yoenis Cespedes). A former Cy Young Award winner was traded (David Price). A Gold Glove winner was traded (Gerardo Parra). Teams traded within their own division (Red Sox sent reliever Andrew Miller to the Orioles). We even saw a trade between the Red Sox and Yankees, the two biggest rivals in American sports (Stephen Drew for Kelly Johnson).</p>
<p>As with most things, things have swung so far away from trading prospects that we can expect a market correction in the near future. Eventually teams will overvalue prospects and smart teams will start trading them away.</p>
<p>In fact, one team that did trade a top prospect was the Oakland A's, who sent the <a href="http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/10166140/byron-buxton-tops-2014-ranking-top-100-prospects-mlb">third-best prospect in baseball</a> (SS Addison Russell) to the Cubs earlier this month in a deal that landed the A's two starting pitchers.</p>
<p>Maybe Billy Beane is just ahead of the curve once again.</p>

Why MLB's Trade Deadline Was The Craziest In 20 Years

<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>The San Francisco Giants are back in the World Series for the third time in five years and a lot of people think they are going to come out on top again.</p>
<p>But while the Giants have more household names, it is the upstart Royals, playing in their first postseason since 1985, who are going to lift the World Series trophy at the end.</p>
<p>Here are the four biggest reasons:</p>
<p><strong>The Giants pitching is not as good as you might think</strong>.</p>
<p>Starting pitching is often the biggest factor in a short series like the World Series. The Giants are the National League club, have big-name pitchers, and a reputation for having good starting pitching.</p>
<p>But while the Giants starting pitching is good, it is not as deep as year's past and the Royals staff is much better than most may realize.</p>
<p>Here is the second-half Fielding Independent Pitching (FIP) numbers for the projected starting pitchers for each game. FIP is similar to ERA but takes into account that pitchers have different defenses and pitch in different ballparks, and is generally considered a better indicator of how well a pitcher is pitching.</p>
<p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"></div><p></p></div></div></p>
<p><strong><br /></strong>The Giants will start two very good pitchers (Madison Bumgarner, Jake Peavy) and two mediocre pitchers (Tim Hudson, Ryan Vogelsong). Meanwhile, all four of the Royals' starting pitchers have posted a second-half FIP under 3.75.</p>
<p>The result is a decided pitching advantage for the Giants in just two games (2 and 6) and a slight advantage in two more (1 and 5) while the Royals have a decided advantage in the other three games.</p>
<p><strong>The Royals have a real DH</strong>.</p>
<p>Until Major League Baseball gets smart and starts using the designated hitter in the National League, <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/the-dh-in-the-national-league-is-now-inevitable-2013-5">something that is inevitable</a>, the American League will almost always have an offensive advantage in the World Series, especially when the AL team has home field advantage as the Royals do.</p>
<p>The reason is that most AL teams have a designated DH, a guy who is used to, and mentally prepared for, sitting long periods of time in between at bats.</p>
<p>This season, the Giants played ten interleague games in AL parks. While that is a small sample, it is enough to at least give us a sense that they are not very good at it. Giants DHs hit .231 with no home runs and a .516 OPS during the regular season.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Billy Butler started 108 games at DH for the Royals. That's his job and while he is not great (.259 avg, .642 OPS as a DH), he is better than what the Giants can throw out there (Michael Morse?).</p>

<p><strong>The Royals have a secret weapon just waiting to be unleashed</strong>.</p>
<p>Much has been made of how the Royals are in the World Series in large part because of their <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/kansas-city-royals-james-shields-trade-2014-10">gutsy decision to trade their best prospect for James Shields</a>. Often forgotten is that the Royals also received relief pitcher Wade Davis in that deal with the Tampa Bay Rays and he has arguably been the second most important pitcher for the Royals this season.</p>
<p>Davis led all MLB relievers with a 1.00 ERA and was second in FIP (1.19) and Wins Above Replacement (3.1). He has been a beast and at one point this season he made 33 straight appearances without allowing a run and only allowing one inherited runner to score.</p>
<p>But Davis' most amazing stat is that he has not done the one thing that kills all relievers. He has not given up a home run all season. At some point in this series, Davis is going be a difference-maker.</p>

<p><strong>The Royals have home field advantage</strong>.</p>
<p>Kansas City waited 29 years to get back to the playoffs and now they are four wins away from winning the World Series.</p>
<p>Thanks to the AL All-Star team, the Royals have home field advantage in the series and potentially four home games.</p>
<p>The Kauffman Stadium crowd is going to be nuts and the Giants are going to have a hard time winning a game six or seven in Kansas City.
