He is going to succeed 76-year-old Sumitra Mahajan — the 16th Lok Sabha Speaker who did not contest the elections this time. However, there is no official announcement yet. Om Birla’s wife congratulated him by saying this was a proud moment for the family. <keyword id="513880" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Pinaki-Misra">Pinaki Misra</keyword>, the Biju Janata Dal’s parliamentary party leader in the Lok Sabha, said that his party, although not a member of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), had decided to support Birla. "The BJP, which has a clear majority in the Lok Sabha, has nominated Om Birla for the post of the Lok Sabha Speaker and sought our support for him. Since we have always had constructive cooperation with the Centre, we will support the proposal," said Mishra. The 57 year old Birla, was once a key leader of the Bhartiya Janata Yuva Morcha and reportedly has close ties with Amit Shah. He also played a significant role in BJP-led Ram Janmabhoomi movement in the 1990s. The decision to nominate Birla came soon after JP Nadda took the place as working BJP yuva president. Birla has worked closely with Nadda too. Om Birla worked as a Vice-President of BJP youth wing when Nadda was serving as the president of the same. Om Birla, who has been contesting as an MLA from Kota, kept winning from 2003 to 2014. He represented the Kota-Bundi Lok Sabha constituency. He<a href="https://www.indiatoday.in/india/story/om-birla-won-t-be-first-two-time-mp-to-be-elected-as-lok-sabha-speaker-1551010-2019-06-18"> reportedly</a> had a case registered against him in 2018 during his entire political career. He was accused of accumulating assets disproportionate to his income. The <keyword id="49015" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajasthan-High-Court">Rajasthan High Court</keyword> dismissed the case in 2019.

New Delhi, Jan 8 () Domestic traders body CAIT on Wednesday said the BJP should declare a trader as a candidate for the post of chief minister in poll-bound Delhi.
It said that no government in Delhi can be formed without support of trading community as it is one of the major and deciding vote bank.
"BJP should declare a trader as a candidate for the post of chief minister of Delhi which will polarise the political atmosphere of Delhi and across the country in favour of BJP in a big way," Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) said in statement.
The association said that traders from all over the country, including Delhi, demanded from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President and Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP Working President Jagat Prakash Nadda, at Halla Bol rally here.
"With this, more than 15 lakh traders of Delhi, their employees and their families of more than 40 lakh people will unilaterally support the BJP, whereas the support of 7 crore traders from all over the country will strengthen the BJP and the government," it added.
Assembly elections will be held on February 8 in Delhi which will witness a triangular contest between ruling Aam Aadmi Party, Bharatiya Janata Party and Congress.
The results will be declared on February 11.
In the 2015 polls, Arvind Kejriwal had led the AAP to an unprecedented victory with his party bagging 67 seats, leaving just three seats for the BJP. The Congress drew a blank. RR BAL

BJP should declare a trader as CM candidate for Delhi: CAIT

Campaigning for the third and final phase of Bihar assembly elections in which 2.35 crore voters will decide the electoral fate of more than 1,200 candidates, including the Speaker and some members of the state cabinet, ended on Thursday evening. The final phase of polling on Saturday will cover 78 constituencies spread across 19 north Bihar districts. Leading from the front, Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Narendra-Modi">Narendra Modi</keyword> addressed rallies in remote districts of Araria and Saharsa for this phase of elections, exhorting the masses to retain their trust in the NDA. He asserted that the coalition headed in the state by Chief Minister and JD(U) president Nitish Kumar was looking forward to meet the "aspirations" of people in the decade to follow, having fulfilled their "needs" in the preceding one. Altogether 12 rallies were addressed by the Prime Minister, on whom the NDA banks for performing well in the 243 assembly constituencies across the state. Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi also addressed election meetings at Madhepura and Araria where he raised suspicions of poll rigging dubbing the EVMs as MVMs (Modi voting machines), drawing jeers from the BJP which claimed the opposition leader had lost his nerves in the face of an impending defeat. Prominent among those who would be seeking to retain their seats in the final phase are Speaker Vijay Kumar Chaudhary and state cabinet ministers Suresh Sharma and Pramod Kumar. Another candidate who has piqued curiosity is Subhashini Yadav, the Congress candidate from Bihariganj in Kishanganj district, better known as the daughter of veteran socialist leader and former Union minister Sharad Yadav. Armed with an MBA degree in marketing, the 30-year-old has made a sudden plunge into politics. Her assembly segment falls under Madhepura Lok Sabha seat which her father has won a number of times but lost in 2014 and failed to wrest back last year. Sharad Yadav had been the JD(U)s national president for long and served as the national convenor of the NDA until Nitish Kumar, the partys de facto leader, chose to snap ties with the BJP in 2013. New Delhi, Mar 27 () From Prime Minister Narendra Modi to rating agencies and economists, all welcomed the Reserve Bank of India's steps to reduce the cost of borrowing and infusing liquidity in the market in its war against the impact of coronavirus pandemic. Following are the comments made by key leaders, businessmen and economists:* Prime Minister Narendra Modi: Today RBI has taken giant steps to safeguard our economy from the impact of the Coronavirus. The announcements will improve liquidity, reduce the cost of funds, help middle class and businesses.* Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman: Appreciate RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das' reassuring words on financial stability. The 3-month moratorium on payments of term loan installments (EMI) and interest on working capital give much-desired relief. The slashed interest rate needs quick transmission.* Alka Anbarasu of Moody's Investors Service: "RBI's guidelines permitting banks and non-bank financial institutions to grant a 3-month moratorium on loan repayments will soften the negative credit impact that the coronavirus has had on their borrowers in the near term. However, there are still material downside risks to asset quality given the halt in India's economy, the impact of which will not be known until a few quarters after the end of the moratorium.* SBI Chairman Rajnish Kumar: The RBI policy announcements are bold, decisive, compelling and with a humane touch in attenuating to the needs of the economy to fight through the pandemic.The large rate cut, the adjustment in capital conservation buffer, the moratorium on repayments and the bazooka of conventional CRR cut and unconventional liquidity measure of incentivising banks to support CP market - all will help financial markets stabilise, lead to immediate rate transmission and address the credit needs of the real economy. The doctors informed the ministers that Gajendra Singh was brought dead. 
 
The tech savvy Modi expressed grief over the suicide on twitter. The news report further says, Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi pipped Nadda and Baliyan to the post by reaching the hospital before them. 
 In fact Home Minister <keyword id="6355121" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Rajnath-Singh">Rajnath Singh</keyword> has already held a meeting with <keyword id="603012" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-governor">Delhi Governor</keyword> Najeeb Jung and <keyword id="6366315" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Police-Commissioner">Police Commissioner</keyword> BS Bassi on the matter this morning, with widespread protests ringing out in the capital. Will Home Minister’s insurance scheme be a healing touch to the aggrieved farmers? 
 
In the wake of the farmer crisis in the country, the home minister Rajnath Singh is fast-tracking the introduction of the proposed National Crop Income Insurance Scheme, which guarantees income to the farmer during fluctuating prices (he will have to bear loss of 20%). During yield losses due to natural calamities, including drought or unseasonal rain 70-50% of loss would be paid by the government. It also brings all national insurance programmes under its purview and the government wishes to roll it out soon given the present crisis. 
 
Singh had held a meeting on Wednesday with the Minister of State for Agriculture, Sanjiv Balyan, and bureaucrats of the ministry to finalise contours of the proposed insurance scheme for farmers. 
 
An Assocham-SkymWeather study released earlier this month revealed only 19% of farmers have opted for crop insurance while among the rest, 24% said the facility was not available and 11% said they can't afford the premium. There have been five national schemes since 1985, and all have failed with farmers left with no safety net when crops fail. 
 A serious case like farmer suicide, right in the middle of an ongoing political rally motioned at opposing the land acquisition bill has certainly put a big question mark on Modi’s signature land bill. While opposing parties have already started protesting the Land Bill and demanding justice for Gajendra Singh, the whole furore looks like an acid test of the <keyword id="6360789" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Modi-Government">Modi government</keyword> on the issue of agricultural lands and people dependent on it. In a chain reaction of yesterday’s tragedy, the Congress workers are staging protests in front of Delhi CM’s residence and Delhi Police Commissioner’s residence demanding immediate scrapping of the proposed land bill.
