8 US TV series that failed to live up to their popular British counterparts

"I really wanted to work with <keyword id="12587273" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="sandra-bullock" source="Orion">Sandra Bullock</keyword>, and I really loved playing Jack Traven."</p><p>The <a href="https://www.insider.com/keanu-reeves-matrix-resurrections-cast-crew-barely-rehearsed-2021-12">"Matrix Resurrections"</a> star explained to Whitehall that while he "loved" the original film, he had trouble understanding why the second film took place aboard a cruise ship in the Caribbean. </p><p>"It wasn't against any of the artists that were involved in the project, but at that time — I'm sure we've all had this kind of feeling sometimes when things just don't feel right, and that was how I was feeling," Reeves said. </p><p>"I loved 'Speed,' but... now it's on an ocean liner?" the "Matrix" star said of his reaction to the sequel's script.</p><p>Norton joked that in "real life," Reeves "dodg[ed] a bullet" by declining to appear in "Speed 2," which was <a href="https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-1997-06-13-ca-2814-story.html">critically-maligned</a> upon its release in 1997 and currently holds a <a href="https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/speed_2_cruise_control">4% rating</a> on Rotten Tomatoes. </p><p>This isn't the first time Reeves has spoken about his experience filming "Speed." During her set, she joked about the purity ring that the Jonas Brothers wore early in their career as a symbol of abstaining from sex before marriage. They removed those purity rings long before any of the band members got married.</p><p>During her roast, Turner said of the purity rings: "Like, I know this is a roast, and you all think I should be going after them, but I think we need to set the record straight here. No, the rings weren't a good idea. Yes, as a gesture they're laughably, toe-curlingly lame. But remember: This was about more than a gesture.</p><p>"This was about faith. This was about principle. This was about taking a stand and setting an example. Look, Joe Jonas wasn't just sticking his fingers in some dumb metal rings. He was sticking his fingers in costars, actresses, and even a supermodel or two."</p><p>She continued: "To be honest, Joe and the purity-ring thing is kind of like a modern-day Cinderella. Joe tried to find a match for his purity rings a few times, but finally, the finger fit me. It was also like Cinderella because most of the girls he tried it with were under contract to Disney."</p><p>At the end of her roast, Turner said to her husband: "Don't wait up. They also said that they didn't want to talk about the purity rings until a reporter told them he was going to say they were part of a cult.</p><p>"The next thing you know, it was 'the Jonas Brothers and their purity rings,'" Joe said. "We decided at one point, 'Look, this is not who we are. We don't need to be wearing this anymore. This is annoying. People are making fun of it anyway. Sophie Turner roasted Joe Jonas for wearing a purity ring when he was 'sticking fingers in costars'

Los Angeles, May 2 () Actors Michael Sheen and David Tennant have reunited for a special version of Amazon series "Good Omens" to mark the 30th anniversary of authors Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett's novel of the same name.<p>The new special, titled "Good Omens: Lockdown", follows angel Aziraphale (Sheen) and demon Crowley (Tennant) as they check in with each other in lockdown.</p><p>The two friends are talking through their current pandemic situations in an audio-only clip, which was published on Terry Pratchett's YouTube page.</p><p>"Good Omens", which premiered on Amazon Prime Video in 2019, was created and written by Gaiman, who also served as showrunner.</p><p>Set in 2018, the six-episode series follows Crowley and Aziraphale, longtime friends who, having grown accustomed to life on Earth as representatives of Heaven and Hell, seek to prevent the coming of the Antichrist.</p>The show also featured Adria Arjona, Miranda Richardson, Michael McKean, Jack Whitehall and Jon Hamm. Michael Sheen, David Tennant team up for 'Good Omens' lockdown episode

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><ul><li><strong>Misty Buckley is one of the most important people behind the scenes at this year's BRIT Awards, and is in charge of designing the awards show set</strong></li><li><strong>Her job is to make this year's set "bigger and better" than last year's show, which featured a George Michael tribute.</strong></li><li><strong>She's worked on&#xa0;Glastonbury, the 2012 Paralympics, the BBC Music Awards, and two Coldplay tours.</strong></li><li><strong>Over the years she's had some pretty bizarre requests.</strong></li></ul><p><br>Today is one of the busiest days of Misty Buckley's career.</br></p><p>As Production Designer for the BRIT Awards, the 38-year-old is making sure everything is in place for Wednesday night's glitzy awards show in London, which honours the best artists in UK pop music.</p><p>Buckley and her team are behind the stage where winners will receive this year's awards, which will also host performances from stars like Justin Timberlake, Ed Sheeran, Stormzy, Sam Smith, Rita Ora, and Dua Lipa.</p><p>She's so busy that she had to postpone our interview initially to get on a call with nominated artist&#xa0;Rag'n'Bone Man.</p><p>Despite this, she was never supposed to be a production designer. In fact, she initially started out in fashion, but got a taste for set design while planning her own fashion shows as a student at at Central Saint Martins art school.</p><p>She told Business Insider: "It was a time when Alexander McQueen was doing extraordinary and brave fashion shows in run-down buildings around London. I just started doing that with my friends as a sideline to my degree and got really into it."</p><p>Breaking out of fashion and moving into public and fine art, Buckley got involved with designing "obscure performance and installation art," and "breaking the&#xa0;boundaries of traditional theatre spaces."</p><p>However, while she had lots of ideas, she had no technical skills. So she went to evening college to study drafting - or hand-drawing scenery - to be used in television and film.</p><p>Her first job came from her tutor, who was a TV designer. "He used to design alot of televised music shows and performances, [like] Tina Turner and Spice Girls specials," she said. "He was looking for an assistant and rang me up."</p><p>Her first major job with him was as an assistant on the BRIT Awards. "That's how it all started," she said. "It's bizarre to now be at the other end of it as the designer."</p><p><strong>However, the BRITs are just the beginning for Buckley.</strong></p><p>Some of her most impressive design feats include working on Glastonbury Festival every year, or the closing ceremony of the Paralympics when London hosted in 2012.&#xa0;</p><p>She's also worked on the 2015 Rugby World Cup Opening Ceremony at Twickenham, the BBC Music Awards, and Coldplay's Head Full of Dreams World Tour and 2016 Super Bowl performance, as well as designing arena tours and TV performances for the likes of Elton John and One Direction.</p><p>In 2013 and 2014, Buckley won Set Designer of the Year at the Total Production International (TPi) Awards.</p><p>"It's not just just big projects. I like doing smaller projects as well with smaller artists who are breaking through," she said.</p><h2>Evoking the emotion behind the music</h2><p>The job involves a lot of research - mainly into the emotion behind a band or artist's music, according to Buckley.</p><p>"If it's an album from a band, it's really fun and important that you get into the storyline of the album and the narrative of where it's from and why they wrote it and how they were feeling," she said. "I try to communicate how the band are going to feel, how the band want to express themselves."</p><p>This can involve expressing the mood of a "sad and rich album" Like Coldplay's "Ghost Stories," which Buckley called "a love story and a breakup story." Or "Head Full of Dreams," which she calls an "enlightenment album" about "reaching out and connecting people."</p><p>Once she has the mood nailed down, she starts sketching.</p><p>"I'll spend hours sketching and pinning things on the wall, working out shapes and thoughts and concepts there," she said. "Then we'll start to get into some visualisation of those drawings, then some more technical drawings."</p><p>The "we" are the team in her studio who have "different strengths that can bring a project to life" - all while drinking a lot of coffee and green tea.</p><p>She added that the team always build a 3D model of a set. "That's quite special because it's a chance where the artist gets to imagine themselves in that world," she said. "I love seeing their faces when they get presented with their one to 100 version of themselves - it's priceless."</p><h2>Rising to the challenge - from Take That to Coldplay</h2><p>A lot of work goes into making sure that face is a happy one.</p><p>With such close ties to superstar bands and artists, Buckley has been asked to do some pretty bizarre and extravagant things over the years - but she's always risen to the challenge.</p><p>She's been asked to make a giant caterpillar to fit 10 dancers, pocket watches that open to reveal bubble machines, a flying motorbike and sidecar, a human jack-in-the-box, a hot air balloon made out of a thousand small balloons, and a giant gramophone that spits out flowers - and all of that was just for Take That.</p><p>Coldplay, and Chris Martin in particular, have also provided more than one challenge - but it was the first task they set her that solidified her relationship with the band.</p><p>While talking through initial ideas for the Mylo Xyoloto album and tour, the band asked Buckley whether she would work on the music video for a song they had just written, called Christmas Lights.</p><p>Buckley said Chris Martin turned to her and said: "How do you fancy designing a set for us for the video? It should look like a travelling theatre and will need to be somewhere in London."</p><p>And something like a rooftop wasn't good enough - Martin wanted it set "through the streets of London and by the river."</p><p>It was mid-November, and Coldplay wanted the video to be done in time for a Christmas release - meaning Buckley had a week to put something together.</p><p>"We all jumped in a taxi and drove around London, looking for the perfect site for our travelling show," she said. "We decided on the South Bank, so we could capture London at Christmas by the river."</p><p><strong>Here's how it looked:</strong></p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>"Seven days later, the set had been designed, modelled and built."</p><p>On the day of the shoot the weather was expected to drop below freezing - but Buckley and her team shot the video through the night, until 5 a.m.</p><p>"The band were freezing, and poor Phil Harvey and Simon Pegg were appearing in the video in pape- thin lycra Elvis costumes. We were exhausted and frozen to the bone… But the results were amazing."</p><p><strong>You can watch the video below:</strong></p><p>Buckley added: "As we packed up and drove home from the set at&#xa0;7 a.m., I got a message from the band. 'Well done. We loved it.&#xa0; See you on the tour.'"</p><p>"Eight years later&#xa0;we are still dreaming up creations together," she said. "I think they might just have only just forgiven me for letting them freeze that night."</p><p>While working on "Ghost Stories," the team made 2,000 paper stars and toured them around the world.&#xa0;</p><p>"When we did the world tour, they came up with the idea of 24,000 flowers, and a huge flower curtain, and we toured that around the world for two years," she added. "It was absolutely unbelievable -&#xa0;we had to have a team of what we call horticultural technicians who would unravel the flowers every night and make sure they looked beautiful."</p><p><strong>Here's just one of Buckley's set designs for a Coldplay tour:</strong></p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><h2>Making Glastonbury icons</h2><p>While the tours provide a challenge, her favourite job is working on Glastonbury Festival, which she does every year.</p><p>"You get asked to do the most bizarre things: [like get someone to] fly over people's heads or make a giant bike," she said.</p><p>One of her more memorable moments is sitting with Emily Eavis - co-organiser of the festival - who said: "Wouldn't it be nice to have a tower with some ribbons on, and what if we could climb up that tower?"</p><p>"We went along to the steel company who built the stages, and said we wanted a tower in the middle of the field that people could go up which would will be covered in ribbons," Buckley said.</p><p>Despite the fact it sits in the middle of the most windy, exposed area of the festival - and the company couldn't drill into the field - Buckley said: "We did it and built it and it's now become an icon of the festival, and it was just her and me, with a cup of tea, dreaming that up."</p><h2>The 'bigger and better" BRITs</h2><p>Despite all her experience working with artists around the world, the BRITs are where it all began - and it sounds like audiences are in for a treat this year.</p><p>"Last year was massive, wall-to-wall in the O2," Buckley said.</p><p>That show's highlights included a tribute to George Michael featuring Chris Martin, and duet from Ed Sheeran and Stormzy.</p><p><strong>This is what the preliminary graphics looked like.</strong></p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p><strong>...And here's how it actually looked on stage.</strong></p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>"This year, my brief was to build and create a bigger and better set than last year," Buckley said.</p><p>"I thought: 'We're going to have to start building outside the O2 because we're really pushing the boundaries.' But we've managed to achieve a bigger set."</p><p>Those watching the awards on Wednesday can expect a vibe of metallics, like "warm silver Champagne and light gold," accoring to Buckley.</p><p>"It feels to me a bit more elegant - I feel like it's more feminine in a way," she said." There's a real elegance and lightness to the set even though it's huge."</p><p><strong>Her Instagram account gave a sneak peek at what she called "an enormous piece of sculpture" that looks like it "has grown out of the floor."</strong></p><p>Buckley said that biggest challenge of all is making sure each artist's performance fits into the set and they "do every band justice."</p><p>This involves "getting all of the creative for each artist's performance to make sure they have their own identity, that they work in synergy with the set, that they get the most out of it, that we can fit their stuff on the stage."</p><p>"The biggest challenge is to fit every single article of each set backstage and be able to turn it around," she said.</p><p>"It's making a lot of things fit into a small space."</p><p>Yet somehow, Buckley and her team seem to make it all fit - and the results are something like this:</p><p><em>The 38th BRIT Awards with Mastercard, hosted by Jack Whitehall, will take place at The O2 on February 21. A BRIT Awards set designer who's worked on Coldplay tours and Glastonbury told us the craziest demands she's had from a band or artist

<p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table float_right"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div>It is six months since the BBC yanked its youth TV channel BBC3 off the airwaves.<p>A once prosperous home for the millennial audience television finds hard to reach, BBC3 is now a <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcthree" target="_blank">microsite on bbc.co.uk</a> and a patchwork of social media accounts.</p><p>The closure was financially motivated, saving £30 million ($39 million) a year, but the BBC dressed it up as a bold mission to connect with young people in an age when TV is increasingly becoming a relic. Either way, it was unprecedented to shutdown such a successful service.</p><p>So how's BBC3's new birth working out? Well, we haven't officially been told.</p><p>BBC director general Tony Hall provided some insight for the BBC Trust in June, according to <a href="http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/bbctrust/assets/files/pdf/about/minutes/2016/16_jun.pdf" target="_blank">minutes published by the governing body last week</a>, but a coherent update on BBC3's performance is yet to be made public.</p><p>And that's not ideal. Writing off a TV channel that has been the beneficiary of £1 billion ($1.3 billion) of public funding over 13 years demands close attention.</p><p>So Business Insider is here to help. We have spoken to TV industry insiders close to the controversial decision and analysed online and TV data&#xa0;in an attempt to make sense of how BBC3 is getting on.&#xa0;</p><p>The short answer is this: BBC3 has not fallen off a cliff, but it is not exactly soaring, either. It is early days still, of course, and the channel's controller <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/aboutthebbc/entries/a88c9192-9c09-4287-bb58-c90c6ca7995e" target="_blank">Damian Kavanagh has always maintained "it is a marathon and not a sprint."</a></p><p>There are some encouraging signs, but BBC3 has a long way to go before it can muffle the cries of "I told you so" from <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/media/2014/mar/05/bbc3-closure-triggers-protests-star-names">the people who vehemently campaigned against its move online</a>. As one TV industry exec told us, the BBC3 team is "playing with two hands behind their back and a terrible deck of cards."</p><h2>BBC3's iPlayer engagement: A troubling fact.</h2><p>Let's start with a big, bald fact: Since moving online in February, fewer BBC3 shows have featured in BBC iPlayer's most-watched charts than in the past four years.</p><p>Between February and June (the last time iPlayer stats were published), a total of seven BBC3 shows appeared in the <a href="http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/aboutthebbc/insidethebbc/mediacentre/iplayer/performancepackaprmayjun2016.pdf" target="_blank">monthly rundowns of the top 20 programmes on iPlayer.</a></p><p>This was down on eight shows over the same period last year - when the BBC pulled back investment in BBC3 amid uncertainty over the channel's future - and 18 in 2014. We have spoken to two senior executives about BBC3's performance to date and both said there is evidence that the channel is still creatively strong.</p><p>But there are frustrations that these creative highs are not getting the recognition they deserve and BBC3 does not yet have a coherent enough identity online.</p><p>"Reaching young and diverse audiences is one of the BBC's biggest challenges and BBC3 should be the Trojan Horse to achieving that aim," one BBC source said. "While there are really great programmes, it just is not cohesive enough at the moment."</p><p>This struck a chord with Ash Atalla, the managing director of Roughcut TV, which produces BBC3 shows "Cuckoo" and "People Just Do Nothing." He told us that&#xa0;BBC3 has simply become an iPlayer service.&#xa0;</p><p>"I see nothing that makes me think that the decision [to close BBC3 as a TV channel] was a smart one. In fact, it looks worse,"&#xa0;<span>Atalla</span> said.</p><p>"It still feels counterintuitive that when trying to make savings - a saving that ended up being very small - that they chose switch off a youth channel. It feels like the brand, the calling card for BBC3, has gone."</p><p>Jono Read, who led the <a href="http://savebbc3.com/" target="_blank">#SaveBBC3 campaign last year</a>, added that it is inevitable that BBC3 will become "more about the individual programmes, rather than the BBC3 brand itself."</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>He noted how ITV2 has appeared to benefit from BBC3's disappearance from the TV schedule. ITV's youth entertainment channel poached BBC3's US comedy "Family Guy" as part of the changes and infiltrated the national conversation with dating show "Love Island" earlier this year.</p><p>ITV2's peak time audience (7 p.m. to 10.30 p.m.) is up 9% year-on-year to 449,700 in the first seven months of 2016, according to Barb figures. Channel 4's millennial channel E4 is also up 6% to 483,000 in primetime. The absence of BBC3 will not have hindered this progress.</p><h2>BBC3 fighting hard to keep its brand alive through social media.</h2><p>BBC3 is fighting hard to prevent its brand from fading into TV history. Its young team has been tasked with growing the channel's social media presence and the numbers are heading in the right direction.</p><p>BBC3's Twitter followers have grown 11% to 719,000 since the online move in February, according to our analysis. BBC3's YouTube subscribers have more than doubled to 103,000 over the same period, while Facebook likes are up by a fifth to 987,000 year-on-year.</p><p>BBC3 had one of its biggest hits so far last week with its "Anchorman"-inspired Premier League season preview, which has racked up more than&#xa0;18 million views on Facebook at the time this article was published.</p><p><div></div></p><p>It is a more encouraging picture than the iPlayer figures, but should be seen in a context in which BBC3's closest rivals are also growing their social media footprint.</p><p>ITV2, for example, has more Twitter followers than BBC3 (up 6% to 780,000 since February) and Channel 4's youth service E4 has made similar gains. Vice meanwhile, is miles ahead of BBC3 on YouTube, with a seven million-strong army of followers around the world.</p><p>The latter is also launching TV channel Viceland next month - a decision that may have prompted winces among the proponents of BBC3's online move. One of the world's foremost youth brands is certainly not of the view that TV is increasingly becoming a relic.</p><p>As BBC3 and Vice head off on their different paths, only time will tell who is right. Right now, BBC3 is still enjoying something of a honeymoon period. The media scrutiny has died down and Kavanagh and his team are quietly getting on with the job in hand.</p><p><div></div></p><h2>BBC3 team are good people 'playing with two hands behind their back and a terrible deck of cards.'</h2><p>There is also goodwill in the TV industry.</p><p>After 750 industry captains - including onscreen stars Daniel Radcliffe and Jack Whitehall - <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/article/33059143/hundreds-of-stars-sign-letter-calling-to-save-bbc-three" target="_blank">signed a letter last year calling for the BBC3 closure plans to be killed</a>, some of the <keyword id="6354868" type="COUNTRY" weightage="60" keywordseo="UK">UK</keyword>'s most powerful producers are now trying to make the best of the situation.</p><p>Hat Trick Productions managing director Jimmy Mulville is one such figure. The producer of "Have I Got News for You" led a highly charged industry campaign to keep BBC3 on television.</p><p>This <a href="http://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/news/tensions-surface-at-bbc3-comedy-briefing/5089462.article" target="_blank">boiled over at a BBC comedy producer briefing last year</a>, during which Mulville likened the meeting to a funeral for BBC3. BBC comedy controller Shane Allen also jokingly suggested that the broadcaster had a sniper trained on Mulville's seat.</p><p>But now several months have passed, industry sources have told Business Insider that Mulville has written to BBC3 boss Kavanagh to draw a line under the matter. <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/latestnews/2016/bbc-three-comedy-feeds" target="_blank">Hat Trick is now making a comedy pilot for the channel about private tutors, titled "Limbo."</a></p><p>"People Just Do Nothing" producer Atalla is being similarly pragmatic. "The people working for BBC3 are doing their very best. They are just playing with two hands behind their back and a terrible deck of cards. This is not a failing of that team, it is a failure of the initial decision," he said.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>Read, the #SaveBBC3 campaigner, also wants to see the channel succeed. "I really want to see BBC3 work, but I think it might need more investment to be a success," he said.</p><p>If Read is right, it would present an interesting conundrum for the BBC. BBC3 was reinvented primarily to save money, but after the BBC has made such a big play of connecting with young audiences online, can it really afford to allow the channel to fail?</p><p>Almost certainly not is probably the answer to that question - and six months in, there are signs that the blueprint for BBC3 will evolve.</p><p><a href="http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2016-02-12/bbc3-could-be-merged-with-radio-1-to-create-new-youth-division" target="_blank">Radio Times reported in February that BBC3 could be merged with youth radio station BBC Radio 1</a>, which has a social media reach that far eclipses its sister service.</p><p></p><div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image"></div><p></p></div></div><p>This is has now slipped down the agenda as plans for a <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/bbc/12156923/BBC-to-axe-television-and-radio-divisions-as-part-of-radical-management-overhaul.html" target="_blank">radical structural overhaul at the BBC never materialised</a>, but an internal source&#xa0;told Business Insider that it is still likely in the "long-term."</p><p>One change the BBC has committed to is <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-36270371" target="_blank">moving BBC3's short-form content and social media teams to Birmingham by 2018</a>, as the broadcaster bids to make the city a digital hub. This will alter the complexion of the channel's output.</p><p>The BBC's new governance board is expected to carry out a thorough review of BBC3 next year.
