IIT Madras tops Indian institute ranking fifth year in a row – here are the top 10

<ul><li>For the last four months, the residents of Delhi have been either stuck in never-ending traffic or walked out of closed metro stations; or looking for ways to keep their children engaged thanks to unexpected school closures. </li><li>All this is happening in the wake of protests, violence, gunfire and a lot more that is stressing out the national capital. </li><li>Here are all the reasons that Delhi is protesting and suffering for, at the same time. </li></ul>For the last four months, the residents of Delhi have been either stuck in never-ending traffic or walked out of closed metro stations; or looking for ways to keep their children engaged thanks to unexpected school closures. All this is happening in the wake of protests, violence, gunfire and a lot more that is stressing out the national capital. The era of protests started much before the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) issue raged on. In early November, students started it as Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) hiked hostel fee. Later, the winter session of the Parliament has left students and citizens alike taking to the streets protesting the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india/news/bullets-glass-and-stones-fly-all-over-north-east-delhi-killing-5-and-injuring-100/articleshow/74294273.cms">Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA)</a>. Recently, depositors of scam-hit PMC Bank staged a protest outside RBI in Delhi asking the banking regulator to take action. Moreso, the victims who saw their savings vanish also said that they would take inspiration from ‘Shaheen Bagh’ protests. Looks like Delhi is not falling short of issues to take to streets about. While most of the above-mentioned issues are resulting in strife across the country, no city is as affected as Delhi which has become the hotbed. Adding to that, most protests are taking a violent turn, and random incidents of gun shots fired by miscreants is not helping Delhi-ites who are already skittish thanks to pollution spikes and inconsistent weather. The residents are unable to keep up a routine either as untoward incidents have been keeping adults from work and children from schools. There have been at least three such incidences where the schools were shut in Delhi. Two months ago, the massive protests against CAA at the Jamia Millia Islamia University had led to closure of schools in South Delhi. And it hasn’t gotten any better since that day. Even today (February 25), the schools will remain shut in the North East Delhi as the intelligence agencies suspect riots in the area. This was after seven people — including a constable of Delhi Police — <a href="https://www.businessinsider.in/india/news/bullets-glass-and-stones-fly-all-over-north-east-delhi-killing-5-and-injuring-100/articleshow/74294273.cms">lost their lives amid the clashes</a>. The ongoing activities at JNU campus have gathered eyeballs for all the wrong reasons. For the past 14 years, I have been associated with the university, both as a student and as a faculty member, and apart from the educational achievement what I imbibed from that surrounding is the democratic ethos and the right to dissent without any fear. 
 
What went wrong? 
Dissatisfaction from the administration or the system is acceptable and one can be vocal about that in a peaceful manner but being an anti-national and attacking the soul of the country is highly unacceptable. Traditionally, JNU has been a Left inclined university with ideas and propagandas floating over the cup of tea at Ganga Dhaba. 
 
This is not the first time that the anti-national slogans (of mild intensity, of course) are in the air but this time it has gone too far. 
 
Dissatisfaction with the government or any political party can be understood but dissatisfaction with the country cannot be taken for granted. On one side, you are availing all the facilities like subsidized Indian education among others provided to you and on other side you are abusing it should not be tolerated. 
 
First of all this should not have happened in the campus and the administration should have taken care of that. This time all the sensitivity of the freedom of expression has been killed by the protesters. What still remained unanswered is whether they all were university students (especially few with the veils and face masks) or was there some crucial involvement of separatist groups from other states? Delhi Police has already started searching for the clue and raids are being done in few states. Hyderabad University, JNU and now Jadhavpur University, it seems like it’s a preplanned conspiracy of planting the propaganda of anti-nationalism among the students. 
 
In any case, first and foremost objective of any university should be providing quality higher education and everything else is secondary. At JNU, classes are not being conducted with full potential and this is hampering the growth of those students whose future lies in the quality education and not in the association with any political ideology.

JNU uproar: Right to dissent or playing the propaganda

When people logged on to JNU’s central library website, a picture of Indian Tricolour with pro-national slogans greeted them. 
 
A group of people hacked JNU’s website-www.lib.jnu.ac.in- and put Lata Mangeshkar's patriotic hit ‘Aye Mere Watan Ke Logon’ playing in the background with several messages. 
 
The "Indian Hackers Online Squad" posted several slogans like "Pakistan will never get Kashmir". 
 
"So, as you said 'Kashmir ki aazadi tak jang rahegi-jang rahegi'. You are thinking that you will get Kashmir just by barking in the campus of JNU," read the messages. 
 
The messages had reference to Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's previous speeches. 
 
"As I also told Bilawal Bhutto that without any violence let me tell you that Pakistan will never get Kashmir. This is the truth. You have to accept it :) So anti-national elements at JNU should also accept that Pakistan will never get Kashmir," the message stated. 
 
 
 
Moreover, the hacked page also carried a photo of actor Sunny Deol with a caption promising to eliminate "all Afzals", in response to an alleged slogan-‘Kitne Afzal maaroge har ghar se Afzal niklega (How many Afzals will you kill, one will emerge from every house)’. 
 
The varsity's library authorities, said, "the hacking of the website was noticed after office hours. The matter has been reported to the university's IT department and measures are being taken to rectify it".

These #JNUsticeLeague superheroes will help India from free speech, question ideologies

JNUSU president <keyword id="3048656" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kanhaiya-Kumar">Kanhaiya Kumar</keyword> on Thursday moved the Supreme Court seeking to be released on bail. 
 
The apex court bench comprising Justice J. Chelameswar and Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre said they will hear the plea at 10.30 a.m. on Friday. 
 
Lawyer Vrinda Grover, who filed the plea on behalf of Kanhaiya Kumar, said in the petition that since the atmosphere in the Patiala House court complex was not conducive for moving the plea application, Kanhaiya Kumar was invoking his right under Article 32 to move the Supreme court directly for bail. 
 
Under Article 32, a citizen can move the Supreme Court for enforcing his fundamental rights.

JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar moves petition seeking bail

As the debate over the <keyword id="6704569" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="JNU-row">JNU row</keyword>, nationalism and anti-nationalism was heating up with support and criticism pouring from all quarters over <keyword id="3048656" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kanhaiya-Kumar">Kanhaiya Kumar</keyword>’s alleged sedition and alleged anti-national events at the JNU, this BJP lawmaker also had something to say. 
 
BJP lawmaker Gyandev Ahuja, during a protest in Alwar over the JNU row, said, “In JNU daily you find 3,000 beer cans and bottles, 2,000 Indian liquor bottles, 10,000 cigarette butts, 4,000 beedis, 50,000 bone pieces, 2,000 wrappers of chips, 3,000 used condoms and 500 abortion injections." 
 
His bizarre comments backfired and invited the wrath from BJP chief Amit Shah. Amid all this, his comments also became a butt of joke as Twitterati did not spare Ahuja and BJP at all.

Swachh Bharat on a new high as #BJPCountsCondoms!

Delhi Police will not "shy away" in using its options if the five <keyword id="6356383" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="JNU">JNU</keyword> students who resurfaced in the campus fail to cooperate with the investigators, Commissioner B S Bassi today said. 
 
"There is no doubt that seditious speeches and slogans were raised in the event concerned. We also know that some involved in it, who went absconding soon after, have now returned. 
 
"At this point, there is no imminent threat to life and property, for which we are working with patience. For every job we do, our tactics are dynamic," Bassi said. 
 
He further said, "Today, we can afford to wait for them (the five students) to regain some 'sadbuddhi' (better sense) and cooperate with the police." 
 
"If we feel that they are unlikely to abide by the law, we have options available and we will not shy away from using them," the police chief added. 
 
The five JNU students, including Umar Khalid, whom the police were looking out for across cities, resurfaced in the university's campus on Sunday night but the police have not arrested them yet. 
 
In an apparent U-turn in the police's approach in the case, senior officials now say that they are waiting for the students to surrender on their own and also expect the JNU authorities to persuade them in doing so. 
 
Bassi had yesterday said that the final call will be taken by the investigating officer of the case and whether to enter the university's campus or not will be the decision of DCP (South) Prem Nath who is heading the probe. 
 Police had registered a case of <keyword id="6364658" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="sedition">sedition</keyword> in connection with the event held at Jawaharlal Nehru University campus, to mark the death anniversary of Parliament attack convict <keyword id="43716" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Afzal-Guru">Afzal Guru</keyword>, in which <keyword id="679055" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="anti-national">anti-national</keyword> slogans were allegedly raised. 
 On February 12, the police arrested JNU Students Union president <keyword id="3048656" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Kanhaiya-Kumar">Kanhaiya Kumar</keyword> in connection with the case and started a search operation for others.

The Day Two of the <keyword id="105431" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="budget-session">Budget Session</keyword> saw <keyword id="48510" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rajya-Sabha">Rajya Sabha</keyword> face subsequent adjournments as student politics dominated the session, with the opposition BSP storming to the well to the house and demanding that BJP clarifies its stand regarding the constitution of an inquiry committee to look into the suicide of <keyword id="3259203" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Rohit-Vermula">Rohit Vermula</keyword>. 
 On the other hand, in the <keyword id="6355187" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Lok-Sabha">Lok Sabha</keyword>, the <keyword id="6704569" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="JNU-row">JNU row</keyword> attracted prominence apart from the issue of Rohit Vermula’s death. 
 
The ministers as usual were at their ridiculous best indulging in a blame-game while conveniently neglecting the bigger issues at hand.

Its students and alumni, who arrived in Delhi to meet officials of the Information and Broadcasting (I&amp;B) Ministry, were taken into custody for protesting outside it. After more than 20 days of agitation against the appointment of <keyword id="54" type="POSITION" weightage="80" keywordseo="TV-actor">TV actor</keyword> <keyword id="258297" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="Gajendra-Chauhan">Gajendra Chauhan</keyword> as the new chairman of the institute, the students came here. The <keyword id="6359715" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="protest">protest</keyword> was supported by students of <keyword id="6360099" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Delhi-University">Delhi University</keyword>, <keyword id="58265" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Jawaharlal-Nehru-University">Jawaharlal Nehru University</keyword> (JNU) and Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI). 

	The FTII students have been boycotting classes, abandoning academic work in protest against Chauhan, who according to them does not have “vision and knowledge” to lead the premiere institution of film-making. 
 

	Nakul Singh Sahani, an independent film-maker and FTII alumnus, said: “The students were holding a peaceful protest outside the ministry at Shastri Bhawan when they were dragged by police and arrested. We came here to arrive at a conclusion and want a fresh selection of a chairman and some governing council members of the institute. We also want a transparent system where we could know how these appointments were done.”
 <keyword id="2933028" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Cinematographer-Saurabh-Vishwakarma">Cinematographer Saurabh Vishwakarma</keyword>, who passed out from FTII in 2004, said: “It is a prestigious institution and the post of the chairman is not one that can be offered to anyone. If a person has achieved eminence in his field and his work has been recognized, then it adds to his credentials. Such person can be appointed as is its head.” 

	Sahani passed out from the Pune-based institute in 2006. He said: “Chauhan has zero credential to be the chairman. The TV actor was appointed as he is associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and not because of his depth of knowledge.”
 

	Moreover, there are some members in the FTII governing council who have been selected due to their closeness to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), he said, asking “do they have any idea about film-making, script writing or can they teach students or plan their syllabus and conduct workshops”.
 “Chauhan doesn’t have the required experience to run the top most institute of film-making, which enjoys certain credibility in India and abroad. How will he lead the institution,” asked Aditi Sharma, film-maker and owner of <keyword id="2933027" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Apple-Box-Films">Apple Box Films</keyword>. 

	She said: "There were eminent people in the field of cinema before Chauhan who occupied this prestigious post. The legacy has to be maintained and respected.”
 The post has been previously held by National award-winning film-maker <keyword id="29916" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Shyam-Benegal">Shyam Benegal</keyword>, veteran actor Vinod Khanna, Kannada writer U R Ananthamurthy, film director <keyword id="222175" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Saeed-Akhtar-Mirza">Saeed Akhtar Mirza</keyword>, among others. 

	This type of political interference is not new to institutions of higher learning in India, Sharma said, adding IITs and IIMs are also its victims. 
 

	Thousands of students sit for the test and compete to get an entry in FTII, said Himanshu Prajapati, second year student of film direction. “People like Chauhan will destroy the credibility of the institute,” he said.
