IIT Madras tops Indian institute ranking fifth year in a row – here are the top 10

They want to appeal to the MPs to ‘save public education’. The government imposed Section 144 near the Parliament and deployed nearly 700 security personnel outside the JNU campus — in anticipation of the protest. Despite the partial fee rollback, students have been protesting over hostel fee and curfews. The student union claims that the institute’s decision to raise hostel, mess and security fee by 400% — is unfair. "At a time when fee hikes are rampant across the country, students have emerged as the first line of defence for inclusive education. We invite all students of Delhi, to join us as we march on foot from JNU to Parliament on the first day of the winter session of Parliament," the JNUSU said. But not many have been coming out in support of the protest. “There are 8,000 students in the university and at least 6,000 of them want to attend classes. But 200 or so students are not allowing them and have created an atmosphere of terror,” a JNU professor <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/delhi/jnu-fee-hike-protests-live-updates-students-to-march-to-parliament-today/liveblog/72103170.cms">told</a> the Times of India. The agitation has forced the Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) to form a three-member high powered committee to look into the matter. The university administration <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/india/jnu-students-say-academic-emergency-at-varsity-demand-vcs-removal-as-teachers-extend-support-2382953.html">hiked</a> the hostel mess security fee from ₹5,500 to ₹12,000, adding a service charge worth ₹1,700. It also increased the charges of a single room from ₹20 to ₹600 per month and to ₹300 for a double bed room which is to be shared. However last Thursday on November 14, the institution announced a partial rollback, reducing the charges for single room to ₹ 200 per month and ₹100 for a shared double room. Added to this, hostel curfews and a dress code also did not resonate well with the students. The university mandated 11 pm curfew for hostel students. JNU students march to Parliament defying Section 144 imposed by the government

 After that, a lot of social media users are pointing out to many issues around the key reasons for the protest — revision on hostel fees. The university revised the fee after 14 years. This is the longest gap in hostel fee revision among the top central universities in India.  The revised hostel fee for JNU students, after the partial rollback is at ₹3,600 per year and ₹1,800 for students belonging to below-poverty line sections. On the other hand, the annual hostel charges across IIT Delhi and Mumbai campuses range between ₹15,000 and ₹20,000. While some people are supporting the outrage, others are agitated by the overhaul. “Students should give written undertakings that they will not participate in strikes/protests,” said another user.

In a recent move, a few agitating students of the varsity occupied the administration block, defaced almost every wall of the block with graffiti against the JNU administration and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). National Testing Agency (NTA) has released the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) entrance test schedule for the next session in 2020. According to the varsity’s official website, the online registration will begin from 2 March 2020. Interested applicants can visit the official website ntajnu.nic.in. The exam will be held from 11 May 2020 to 14 May 2020. And the admit cards for the same will be rolled out on 21 April 2020. The tentative date for the declaration of result is 31 May 2020. The test will include multiple choice questions (MCQs) of 100 marks. The duration of the online examination is 90 minutes. <ul><li>Students of India’s premier <keyword id="58265" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jawaharlal-Nehru-University">Jawaharlal Nehru University</keyword> (JNU) have taken to the streets, holding placards to protest against massive fee hike, dress code restrictions and hostel curfews. </li><li>The institute’s administration hiked the hostel, mess and security fee by close to 400%. </li><li>The student body called for a boycott of the convocation and demanded the rollback of the hostel draft manual and fee hike proposed by the administration.</li></ul>Hundreds of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students have taken to the streets, holding placards in protest. They are rallying against a fee hike, dress code and hostel curfews that the top university has now mandated. According to the student union, the institute raised the hostel, mess and security fee by a massive 400%.

 The university administration <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/india/jnu-students-say-academic-emergency-at-varsity-demand-vcs-removal-as-teachers-extend-support-2382953.html">hiked</a> the hostel mess security fee from ₹5,500 to ₹12,000, adding a service charge worth ₹1,700. It also increased the charges of a single room from ₹20 to ₹600 per month and to ₹300 for a double bed room which is to be shared. That accounts for an annual fee hike of almost ₹3,000 per student. That is a pain point for university students where “majority of students come from the most marginalized backgrounds in this country,” News18 <a href="https://www.news18.com/news/india/jnu-students-say-academic-emergency-at-varsity-demand-vcs-removal-as-teachers-extend-support-2382953.html">reported</a>. Added to this, hostel curfews and a dress code also did not resonate well with the students. The protest coincides with the institute’s third convocation ceremony. The student body called for a boycott as they demand a rollback of the rules and the fee hike. They also intend to marching towards the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) in Vasant Kunj, Delhi. Delhi police used water cannons to disperse the students as they tried to cross the barricades to meet the vice chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar. The VC repeatedly rejected the request to meet and discuss the issues.

 "While we were paying ₹2,500 a month earlier, we will now have to pay ₹7,000. We are compelled to protest because our issues have not been addressed,” JNU students <a href="https://www.ndtv.com/delhi-news/protest-breaks-out-at-jnu-over-fee-hike-on-convocation-day-2130632">told</a> NDTV. JNU administration hikes the hostel, mess and security fee by close to 400%

<ul><li>In the rankings, released in London recently, <keyword id="61708" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="iit-bombay" source="Orion">IIT Bombay</keyword> was evaluated as India's top higher education institution.</li><li><keyword id="6354859" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="iit" source="Orion">IIT</keyword> Bombay was also included in the world's top 100 institutes based on the employability of its graduates.</li><li>Globally, the University of California was declared the top university.</li></ul> IIT Bombay is the best educational institution in India, as per the '<keyword id="421975" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="qs-world-university-rankings" source="Orion">QS World University Rankings</keyword>: Sustainability 2023'. In the rankings, released in London recently, IIT Bombay was evaluated as India's top higher education institution for its excellence in employability, social concern, and environment. IIT Bombay was featured in the 281-300 rank range, followed by IIT Delhi (321-340 rank) and <keyword id="58265" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="jawaharlal-nehru-university" source="Orion">Jawaharlal Nehru University</keyword> (JNU) at the third rank (361-380). Apart from this, IIT Bombay was also included in the world's top 100 institutes based on the employability of its graduates. IIT Delhi was ranked for its employability and environment while Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) was ranked for gender equality and removing other inequalities. In terms of competition and academic freedom, <keyword id="6360099" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="delhi-university" source="Orion">Delhi University</keyword> ranked fourth in India. Globally, the University of California was declared the top university, followed by the <keyword id="127994" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="university-of-toronto" source="Orion">University of Toronto</keyword> and the <keyword id="156050" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="university-of-british-columbia" source="Orion">University of British Columbia</keyword> in second and third ranks respectively. The US dominates the rankings with 135 ranked universities (19.2 per cent of the total). Of these, 30 universities are included in the top 100. Similarly, the UK was ranked second with 67 British universities being included in the rankings. After the US and the UK, Australia and Germany are at the forefront of this ranking. The students and teachers of JNU are excited by the university's performance in the rankings. JNU Vice Chancellor Professor Santishree D. Pandit said that she congratulates the students and teachers of JNU "for fulfilling the dream of Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar and Prime Minister <keyword id="6354477" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="narendra-modi" source="Orion">Narendra Modi</keyword>". In the rankings, IIT Kharagpur was featured in the 551-600 rank range. IIT Kharagpur has secured the highest in continuous and regular research efforts. IIT Kharagpur has taken many special initiatives to improve lifestyle and health which are being appreciated globally. IIT Roorkee was included in the 451-500 rank range of the list.
