Hence, its results are highly dependent on that of the UK luxury vehicle brand. </li><li>As concerns over a <keyword id="106030" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-China">US-China</keyword> <keyword id="182860" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="trade-war">trade war</keyword> mount, JLR is shutting down production at its facility in Solihull, UK for two weeks. </li></ul>The last few years have been a mixed bag for Tata Motors in terms of commercial performance as its fortunes have been directly tied to its UK luxury car business, <keyword id="6354362" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jaguar-Land-Rover">Jaguar Land Rover</keyword> (JLR), which provides a bulk of its revenues and profits. For example, in the year ended March 2018, the unit comprised 77% of Tata Motors’ revenue from automotive operations. When JLR does well, Tata Motors does well and vice versa. As demand has slumped in the UK and Europe amid Brexit uncertainty, JLR had pinned its hopes on the luxury vehicle market in China. Last year, it set up a manufacturing facility in the city of Changshu through a joint venture with Chery Automobile Ltd. The unit posted record sales in China in 2017, with sales up 23% to 146,399 units. However, the US-China trade war has significantly hurt JLR’s sales this year, and by extension, has dragged down Tata Motors’ performance. On 8 October, JLR <a href="https://www.tatamotors.com/force-download/?att_id=zcM4mA1L9Nyxl-jdZaZX7Q==&amp;file=iIX5SvrxPyPB5cb7u10VMw==">announced</a> that its global sales fell by 12% in September, driven by a 46% plunge in sales in China owing to the uncertainty and weak consumer demand in the light of trade tensions and import duty changes. The results caused Tata Motors’ share price on the Bombay Stock Exchange to fall by nearly 14% to ₹186 - the lowest level since mid- 2012. Earlier this year, Tata Motors posted its worst quarterly result since 2009 as JLR’s sales in China plummeted. For the quarter ended June 2018, JLR reported a loss of £210m, causing Tata Motors’ net loss for the period to widen to <a href="https://www.bseindia.com/xml-data/corpfiling/AttachLive/e11b2867-9ecf-453e-9afd-7188bb09be3e.pdf">₹18.6 billion</a>. As concerns over a US-China trade war mount, Tata Motors is responding to the decline in Chinese demand by lowering production and cutting costs where it can. The Indian carmaker has decided to shut down production at its manufacturing facility in Solihull, UK for two weeks this month. Last month, JLR said its plant in Castle Bromwich would transition to a three-day workweek from October to December.

Tata Motors’ Jaguar Land Rover unit is a major casualty of the US-China trade war

Revenue from JLR fell by a billion dollars in the year ending March 2019 and made profit in only one of the four quarters last year. Last year, Tata Motors had to take an impairment-- write down the value-- of ₹27,838 crore due to weak sales and profitability at JLR. Things continue to look bleak even after 4,500 jobs were axed. This posed a question in front of N Chandrasekharan, the Chairman of the group's parent Tata Sons, on how long will the conglomerate continue to back the bleeding giant. "A company cannot shut the cash tap as the very nature of this business demands continuous investment in product and technology development," he <a href="https://www.indiatvnews.com/auto/cars-jaguar-land-rover-looking-for-financial-partnership-in-china-tata-chairman-n-chandrasekaran-539207" data-type="tilCustomLink" target="_blank">reportedly</a> said at the Annual General Meeting. "There are many discussions from tactical to strategic for such partnerships. Opportunities are coming and we keep evaluating them and as long as it is in the interest of Tata Motors. We will forge such partnerships so that we are able to address the capex issue," he told the shareholders. Tata Motors has already joined hands with German giant and rival BMW recently for a collaboration for manufacturing electric vehicles under the JLR banner.  Any recovery for the JLR hinges a lot on how Brexit unfolds. “Uncertainty around an orderly outcome of Brexit negotiations and the evolving global tariffs situation pose risks, in particular to TML's JLR business, which faces a significant level of production-sales mismatch due to concentration of its production base in the UK,” global ratings agency Fitch said while downgrading Tata Motors for JLR's troubles. Aside from Brexit, the US-China trade war and <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/tata-motors-mulls-selling-stake-in-jlr-agencies/articleshow/68216938.cms">signs</a> of a slowdown in the global economy are also compounding JLR's problems. China has traditionally been one of the biggest markets for the luxury car but sale volumes fell a sharp 29% between April and June this year, compared to the same time last year. A month back, credit rating agency Moody’s had downgraded Tata Motors. In addition to JLR related troubles, Tata Motors’ domestic business is also troubled by a general slowdown in the auto market. In June 2019, Tata Motors <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/companies/tata-motors-global-sales-dip-5-in-june-4195251.html">reported </a>a 14% decline in India sales, while a 5% drop was seen in global sales. Tata Motors is looking for partnerships to revive Jaguar Land Rover

Luxury automaker <keyword id="6354362" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="jaguar-land-rover" source="Orion">Jaguar Land Rover</keyword> on Thursday reported record <keyword id="6357824" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="sales" source="Orion">sales</keyword> at 3,582 units for nine months ended December 31, 2023. The company said its sales rose 93 per cent year-on-year as compared to the April-December period of the last fiscal. <keyword id="91410" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="range-rover" source="Orion">Range Rover</keyword> and <keyword id="77523" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="defender" source="Orion">Defender</keyword> continue to lead with a year-on-year (YoY) rise of 250 per cent, contributing to over 75 per cent of the current <keyword id="240614" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="order-book" source="Orion">order book</keyword>, the automaker said. In the October-December quarter, the company reported a 74 per cent YoY growth, achieving retail sales of 1,226 units, it added. The newly launched Range Rover Velar witnessed a YoY sales growth of 183 per cent in the quarter, JLR said. "Over the past nine months, JLR's progress in India has been characterised by consistent and substantial growth. Each quarter has shown an impressive year-on-year surge of nearly 100 per cent," JLR India Managing Director Rajan Amba said. The burgeoning order bank and continuous order intake signal a robust demand, underscoring promising future prospects, he added. "...the eagerly awaited Range Rover BEV has generated significant interest among clients across the country, and with our upcoming launches this quarter, we are poised to sustain our remarkable growth trajectory in India," Amba said. The company's order book at the end of the third quarter remained strong with a YoY growth of 92 per cent, it stated. The current total order book covers more than eight months of sales and is seeing a consistent increase month-on-month, it added.

JLR reports best-ever sales at 3,582 units in April-December period

<ul><li>Global ratings agency <keyword id="125045" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Fitch-Ratings">Fitch Ratings</keyword> has downgraded <keyword id="42747" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Tata-Motors">Tata Motors</keyword> with a negative outlook. </li><li>The ratings come in because of Tata Motors Limited’s weak sales in India and the continued sluggish sales from <keyword id="6354362" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Jaguar-Land-Rover">Jaguar Land Rover</keyword>.</li><li>Earlier in June, Moody’s too had downgraded Tata Motors.</li></ul>Another ratings agency has downgraded Tata Motors to ‘BB-’ with a negative outlook. Fitch Ratings has downgraded the automaker as with lesser chances of “TML's profitability and free cash generation in the next two to three years”. Tata Motors is impacted due to its UK-owned subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover, which has become a white elephant for the company. “Uncertainty around an orderly outcome of Brexit negotiations and the evolving global tariffs situation pose risks, in particular to TML's JLR business, which faces a significant level of production-sales mismatch due to concentration of its production base in the UK,” said the report. Cumulatively, Tata Motors sales in the first quarter of 2019-20 fell by 20%. A month back, credit rating agency Moody’s had downgraded Tata Motors with a negative outlook. Tata Motors’ <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/markets/tata-motors-slips-3-on-moodys-downgrade-4122961.html">shares</a> fell 3% after the downgrade. The Fitch Ratings report mentioned that another reason for its downgrade was that “JLR faces elevated risks.” Jaguar Land Rover’s global sales continued to decline in May with the company reporting a 12% dip in <a href="https://www.moneycontrol.com/news/business/jaguar-land-rover-global-sales-dip-12-in-may-4086381.html">May 2019.</a> In June 2019, its sales dropped by 9.6% year-on-year. Brexit, US-China trade war and <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/markets/stocks/news/tata-motors-mulls-selling-stake-in-jlr-agencies/articleshow/68216938.cms">signs</a> of a slowdown in the global economy could be the reasons for the losses incurred by JLR. China has traditionally been one of the biggest markets for the luxury car. JLR's sales volumes in China too massively by 29% year-on-year in the first quarter of FY20.

Tata Motors downgraded again, thanks to slow India business and ‘elevated risks’ from Jaguar Land Rover

<ul><li>Tata Motors finally has a ‘BUY’ rating from CLSA after three years. </li><li>For the quarter ending in September, Jaguar Land Rover sold 128,953 cars, slightly down (-0.7%) compared to the same period a year ago.</li><li>Investors believe that the downtrend in sales may finally be coming to an end.</li><li>The expected stability in <keyword id="1159034" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="JLR-sales">JLR sales</keyword> has given hope to many ancillary companies like tyres, batteries and other auto parts makers.</li></ul>Months of despair have given way to some good news from Tata Motors.  Between July and September 2019, Tata Motors reported a net loss of ₹216.5 crore but that was still a massive improvement from the same quarter in the previous year⁠— when the loss was nearly five times more. For the quarter ending in September, Jaguar Land Rover retail sales nearly the same (down 0.7%) as a year earlier⁠— but the losses were less because the company had cut costs. Jaguar Land Rover saw a 24.3% jump in its sales in China, which is a big market for the company. “JLR’s volume is showing signs of bottoming-out on a low base in China and the ramp-up of the recently upgraded Evoque model—the start of defender sales in 4QFY20 should provide a further boost,” the CLSA report said. Earlier this year, global rating agencies Fitch Ratings and Moody’s both had downgraded Tata Motors with a negative outlook. In June 2019, Jaguar Land Rover retail sales was down by 9.6% as compared to the same month the previous year. In May 2019 too, the company had seen a 12% decrease as compared to the same month in the previous year. “Against challenging market headwinds, for the third consecutive month we have achieved double-digit growth in China, benefitting from our local turnaround plan and performing ahead of the broader market. We have also outperformed shrinking markets in other regions,” said Felix Brautigam, Jaguar Land Rover Chief Commercial Officer in a statement. JLR cheer is spreading The market excitement is visible not just with Tata Motors’ share price but that of many ancillary companies in the business. For the <keyword id="34478" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="auto-industry">auto industry</keyword> which has been hit by a slowdown for a year now, the comeback of Tata Motors and JLR is a positive sign for many others. Stocks like Bharat Forge, Motherson Sumi, and Exide, which make parts for automobiles, are also celebrating what they believe is a light at the end of the tunnel. Motherson Sumi, the largest manufacturer of automotive wiring harnesses and mirrors for passenger cars, too saw its stock trading at a 10% jump on Tuesday afternoon.

 With the festive sales, the October report of the auto industry is also expected to finally get a sigh of relief for the players. New entrants like MG Hector delivered 700 cars on Dhanteras while luxury car Mercedes Benz delivered 600 cars on the festive day. “Passenger vehicle sales, which were in the doldrums since late last year, have shown positive sales trajectory this year in comparison to the off-take witnessed during Dhanteras 2018”, reported IANS. "In terms of passenger vehicle sales, we have witnessed a similar off-take pattern to last year's Dhanteras day," Vinkesh Gulati, Vice President of the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) told IANS.

This is good news for the Indian auto sector as some of the cars from camp JLR, like the <keyword id="333546" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="40" keywordseo="Jaguar-XJ">Jaguar XJ</keyword>, will be built here in India. 
 The company wants to expand aggressively and wants to increase their reach. The plan does seem positive as far as emerging markets are concerned. China is one of the biggest economies for the sales of <keyword id="42034" type="COMPANY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Jaguar">Jaguar</keyword> and <keyword id="44719" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Land-Rover">Land Rover</keyword> cars, and is contributing a lot as well. In China, JLR has joined hands with Cherry automobiles and is building a new production plant there. The plant will start operations in 2015. 
 
 JLR sold over 2,900 units in India last year and grew over 20%. The company is confident of its leadership (Tata) and is positive that they can learn good things on how to expand further under their guidance.

Expressing fear, <keyword id="6354362" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Jaguar-Land-Rover">Jaguar Land Rover</keyword> (JLR) CEO <keyword id="224588" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Ralf-Speth">Ralf Speth</keyword> has said that the increasing cases of "copy paste" of vehicles in China would slow down the appetite of carmakers, including his, to introduce latest designs and technologies in the biggest passenger vehicle market in the world, according to an ET report. JLR has lost an appeal with the Chinese authorities to stop the manufacturing of LandWind X7, a copy of the company's SUV, Evoque. "We have two cars (Chinese products) which copy Evoque. One is more or less a copy paste. They not only copy pasted the exterior, but also the interior. It is a pity for us and for the overall <keyword id="34412" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="economy">economy</keyword> and the reputation of China because I thought copying was a thing of the past," Speth told the financial daily at the recent <keyword id="42747" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Tata-Motors">Tata Motors</keyword> earnings conference in Mumbai. 

	The customer knows how to judge the original product, he said, adding China has enough creativity and engineering power to do something on its own and not depend on copying. 
 

	Meanwhile, JLR has committed over $1.8 bn to the Chinese market along with their JV partner Chery. The market is one of the significant contributors for the carmaker's marquee brands. Over the last few years, the contribution of sales from China has gone up from 18-20% to 25-30% in JLR's annual volumes. The company sold over 1,19,000 vehicles in China out of the 4,70,000 vehicles sold globally in the FY-15.
 

	According to analyst estimates, China contributes about 25% of JLRs volumes, 34% of its revenues and 44% of its profits. JLR has cushioned Tata Motors financials over the last few years.
 The luxury car market in China stands at 1.8 million vehicles annually and is growing at over 20% with three German brands <keyword id="6363321" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Audi">Audi</keyword> (6 lakh), <keyword id="6355119" type="CITY" weightage="80" keywordseo="BMW">BMW</keyword> (4 lakh)and Mercedes (3 lakh) making up for almost 72% of the overall market. LandWind, is a joint venture between China's Changan Auto and <keyword id="1178004" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Jiangling-Motors">Jiangling Motors</keyword>, which produces a series of SUVs sold predominantly for the Chinese domestic market. 

	The LandWind X7 is expected to be rolled out for commercial sales in the next few months, priced almost at a third of the price of Range Rover Evoque at 1,50,000 Yuan ($24,200) versus 4,50,000 Yuan ($72,600).
