Yes, it is official – a new study suggests that shivering is as good as bouts of <keyword id="25289" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="moderate-exercise">moderate exercise</keyword> when it comes to doing away with energy-storing <keyword id="2066477" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="White-fat">white fat</keyword> in your body. In fact, it can trigger the conversion of white fat into energy-burning <keyword id="504723" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Brown-fat">brown fat</keyword>, according to <keyword id="818302" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="endocrinologist">endocrinologist</keyword> <keyword id="2066479" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Dr-Paul-Lee">Dr Paul Lee</keyword> from <keyword id="5629" type="COMPANY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Sydney">Sydney</keyword>’s <keyword id="561931" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Garvan-Institute-of-Medical-Research">Garvan Institute of Medical Research</keyword>. He recently undertook the study at the National Institutes of Health (<keyword id="204101" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="NIH">NIH</keyword>) in <keyword id="6354998" type="COMPANY" weightage="80" keywordseo="Washington">Washington</keyword>. 
 In case you still find it a bit difficult to digest, let’s get into the heart of the matter. Lee’s work has decoded how fat and muscle communicate with each other through specific <keyword id="6456241" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Hormones">hormones</keyword> and turn white fat cells into brown ones to protect us from cold. Around 50g of white fat can store more than 300 kilocalories of energy while the same amount of brown fat can burn up to 300 kilocalories a day. 
 
The study, now published in Cell Metabolism, shows that during cold exposure and exercise, levels of the hormone <keyword id="2066488" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Irisin">irisin</keyword> (produced by muscle) and <keyword id="2066489" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="FGF21">FGF21</keyword> (produced by brown fat) rise. In fact, around 10-15 minutes of shivering stimulates <keyword id="2066495" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Irisin-secretion-in-humans">irisin secretion in humans</keyword> to a point that can only be reached after exercising for an hour on a bicycle at a moderate level. In the laboratory, irisin and FGF21 turn human white fat cells into brown fat cells over a period of six days. 
 A team from <keyword id="97117" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="80" keywordseo="Harvard-University">Harvard University</keyword> discovered irisin in 2012 through an NIH-funded research project. Irisin has been identified as a muscle hormone stimulated by exercise and it turns white fat in animals into brown fat. 
 
Interestingly, researchers now think that exercise could be a shivering mimic as there is muscle contraction in both processes and exercise-stimulated irisin could have evolved from shivering in the cold. 
 “Excitement in the brown fat field has risen significantly over the past few years because its energy-burning nature makes it a potential therapeutic target against <keyword id="6364492" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Obesity">obesity</keyword> and <keyword id="6359018" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="diabetes">diabetes</keyword>,” Dr Lee told the media. “White fat transformation into brown fat could protect animals against diabetes, obesity and <keyword id="6691344" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="fatty-liver">fatty liver</keyword>. Also, glucose levels are lower in humans with more brown fat.” 
 All humans are born with brown fat around their necks – a natural protective layer that keeps us warm as infants. Earlier, scientists believed that brown fat would disappear after early infancy, but the notion has now changed. It has been found that most adults carry brown fat and the more you have, the slimmer you are likely to stay. Well, that’s not surprising as more brown fat means higher rate of white fat conversion within your body and more <keyword id="2066500" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Calorie-burning">calorie burning</keyword>. 
 Although it is known that <keyword id="523425" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="cold-temperature">cold temperature</keyword> stimulates <keyword id="2066503" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Brown-fat-formation">brown fat formation</keyword>, Dr Lee has undertaken the current study to pinpoint how the body signals that message to its cells and how the activation of brown fat happens. 
 
The body can sense and relay environmental changes to different organs via nerves and hormones. Being an endocrinologist, Dr Lee has investigated the hormones that are stimulated by cold environments. 
 “We identified two hormones that are stimulated by cold – irisin and FGF21 – released from shivering muscle and brown fat, respectively. These hormones fired up the energy-burning rate in the laboratory, and the treated fat cells began to emit heat – a hallmark of <keyword id="2066513" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Brown-fat-function">brown fat function</keyword>,” he stated. 
 According to the <keyword id="14962" type="POSITION" weightage="100" keywordseo="researcher">researcher</keyword>, when we are cold, we first activate our brown fat because it burns energy and releases heat to protect us. When that energy is insufficient, muscles contract mechanically or <keyword id="204100" type="PERSON" weightage="100" keywordseo="Shiver">shiver</keyword>, helping raise the hormone level. This, in turn, triggers white fat conversion into brown fat and the calories locked there burn to generate more heat. From a clinical point of view, irisin and FGF21 represent a cold-stimulated hormone system and could be further explored to <keyword id="1899546" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="fight-obesity">fight obesity</keyword> through <keyword id="2066504" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Brown-fat-activation">brown fat activation</keyword>.

Subjecting the body to sub-200-degree temperatures is already a popular wellness fad and sports recovery tool. Many <a href="https://www.insider.com/cryotherapy-what-it-feels-like-benefits-celebrity-athlete-treatment-2022-2#whole-body-cryotherapy-is-a-treatment-that-involves-spending-a-short-amount-of-time-in-a-very-cold-chamber-often-around-minus-200-degrees-fahrenheit-1">wellness-minded celebrities</a> are fans of cryotherapy, and professional athletes use it to <a href="https://www.insider.com/ice-bath-muscle-building-recovery-chris-hemsworth-trainer-advice-2022-7">help with muscle soreness</a>. The practice might also help with weight loss, per the new findings. People with obesity who had regular exposure to extreme cold saw lower levels of blood sugar and cholesterol compared to a control group, in a small <a href="https://www.eurekalert.org/news-releases/989649" target="_blank" rel="noopener">study</a> of 29 people with obesity, conducted by researchers in Italy.All of the study's participants received care in the form of a diet plan, exercise training, and psychological support. Then, researchers divided them into two groups: one that spent two minutes in a negative 230-degree Fahrenheit cryochamber and another that went into a negative 131-degree cryochamber for the same amount of time. Participants went into the cryochambers 10 times over two weeks.Total cholesterol dropped by 20% for participants who went into the colder cryochamber, but just 9% for those who went in the 131-degree chamber. Blood glucose levels decreased by 10% for the participants who went into sub-200-degree chambers (compared to 3% in the control group) and waist circumference shrunk by 6% (compared to 1% in the control group.)Though cryotherapy likely does not directly burn fat, according to <a href="https://www.healthline.com/health/pomegranate-benefits-on-skin">Healthline</a>, it could support mechanisms in the body that indirectly contribute to shedding fat.<a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26475491/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A small 2015 study</a> of obese men found some subjects had gained higher levels of irisin, a protein that helps convert regular fat into brown fat, after daily cryotherapy sessions over 10 days. <a href="https://www.nih.gov/news-events/nih-research-matters/how-brown-fat-improves-metabolism">Brown fat</a> breaks down blood sugar and regular fat, which is essential for improving metabolism. Too much regular fat, meanwhile, contributes to obesity."Our results indicate that whole body cryostimulation is beneficial in the treatment of obesity," Dr Jacopo Fontana, a researcher at Istituto Auxologico Piancavallo IRCCS, where the study was conducted, said in a release. "The improvements in blood fats and glucose were particularly striking but larger studies of a longer duration are needed to confirm these preliminary results."

Proponents say that cryotherapy has many benefits, including faster muscle healing and weight loss, but more research is still needed to determine how effective it is.Here's what you need to know about how cryotherapy works and what the research says.<h2>What is whole body cryotherapy?</h2>Whole body cryotherapy works by exposing your body to very low temperatures, generally between<a href="https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/whole-body-cryotherapy-wbc-cool-trend-lacks-evidence-poses-risks" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> -200 and -300 degrees Fahrenheit</a>.The cold air, created by liquid nitrogen, cools your skin, along with the blood that runs close to the skin's surface. When this happens, the blood vessels closest to your skin will constrict, limiting the flow of blood.If you have any kind of bodily pain going into the treatment, "cold exposure can slow nerve signals from the area to the brain, which reduces sensation, causing numbness or reduction in pain," says<a href="https://www.sydney.edu.au/medicine-health/our-research/research-centres/prevention-research-collaboration.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> Catriona Rose, PhD</a>, a public <keyword id="6354750" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="health">health</keyword> researcher at the<a href="https://www.sydney.edu.au/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> University of Sydney</a>. For this reason, whole body cryotherapy is<a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fphys.2017.00258/full" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> most often</a> used to help athletes recover faster from injuries.Whole body cryotherapy generally lasts between<a href="https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/whole-body-cryotherapy-wbc-cool-trend-lacks-evidence-poses-risks" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> two and four minutes</a>. "Due to the extremely cold temperatures, it is only safe to be exposed to cryotherapy for a maximum of five minutes," Rose says. And it's best to only stay for a full five minutes if the chamber is on the warmer side, around -95 degrees, Rose adds.Though whole body cryotherapy is becoming more popular, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says there <a href="https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/whole-body-cryotherapy-wbc-cool-trend-lacks-evidence-poses-risks" target="_blank" rel="noopener">isn't enough research</a> yet to say for sure that the procedure is safe.A cryotherapy chamber generally has one of <a href="https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/whole-body-cryotherapy-wbc-cool-trend-lacks-evidence-poses-risks" target="_blank" rel="noopener">two different setups</a>:<ul><li>You stand alone in a tube-shaped chamber that's open at the top. Your body will be enclosed in the chamber, while your head stays out in the open air above.</li><li>You sit or stand in a larger, totally enclosed chamber along with other people. In this set-up, both your head and body are exposed to the cold temperatures.</li></ul>Cryotherapy costs about $30 per session on average and depending on what condition you're treating, you may need at least 10 sessions to see results. "It is expensive," Rose says, "It requires an advanced machine, a trained operator, as well as nitrogen gas canisters."<h2>The benefits of cryotherapy</h2>Some evidence shows that cryotherapy has many benefits. Here are some things that cryotherapy may be able to help with:<h3>Quicker recovery after an injury</h3>When you get injured or go through an intense workout, your muscles will take on some damage. Your body then sends immune cells to clear out any debris and rebuild new cellular structures in your muscles. "However this clearing process is often not very sensitive, and results in healthy neighboring cells being damaged," Rose says.Whole-body cryotherapy slows your blood flow, which<a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0022748" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> limits the amount of immune cells</a> that can reach your muscles. This can help prevent pain from extra damage and actually speeds up the repair process, Rose says.There are several studies that show the healing benefits of cryotherapy:<ul><li><a href="https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0027749#s3"> A 2011 study</a> looked at trained runners who had whole body cryotherapy, other interventions, or no treatment immediately after an intense running exercise. The runners who had cryotherapy felt less muscle pain and tiredness than the other runners as early as one hour after exercise.</li><li><a href="https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Julien-Louis-2/publication/266911344_Whole-Body_Cryostimulation_Limits_Overreaching_in_Elite_Synchronized_Swimmers/links/59e46c23a6fdcc7154e10bc5/Whole-Body-Cryostimulation-Limits-Overreaching-in-Elite-Synchronized-Swimmers.pdf">A 2015 study</a> found that synchronized swimmers had lower levels of muscle fatigue and better tolerance for intense exercise after going through two two-week periods of daily cryotherapy.</li></ul>However, there are also some studies that go against this theory.<ul><li>A<a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00421-017-3757-z"> small 2017 study</a> found that cryotherapy didn't help with muscle soreness for marathon runners and that a cold water bath was more effective.</li><li><a href="https://www.cochranelibrary.com/cdsr/doi/10.1002/14651858.CD010789.pub2/abstract">A 2015 review</a> of four studies found no strong evidence that cryotherapy helps with muscle soreness after exercise.</li></ul><h3>Anti-aging</h3>Whole-body cryotherapy may help reduce free radicals, particles that can damage your cells and<a href="https://juniperpublishers.com/ctbeb/pdf/CTBEB.MS.ID.555871.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> contribute to the aging process</a>.A<a href="https://www.hindawi.com/journals/omcl/2019/7524878/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> small 2019 study</a> found that after 10 sessions of cryotherapy, subjects had higher levels of <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-are-antioxidants-good-for" target="_blank" rel="noopener">antioxidants</a>, compounds that help fight the damage caused by free radicals.However, more research is still needed to see if whole body cryotherapy can actually slow the aging process. "The best practice doses, timings, and frequency of treatments for significant impact are unknown," Rose says.<h3>Weight loss</h3>Experts believe that cryotherapy can<a href="https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fphys.2017.00258/full" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> imitate the effect of exercise</a> on your body, which may lead to weight loss.This is because when you go through cold treatments, your cells adapt by increasing the amount of brown fat in your body, Rose says. Brown fat is important because unlike regular fat, it contains cells that<a href="https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/weight-loss/expert-answers/brown-fat/faq-20058388" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> burn calories and fat stores</a> in order to warm your body.A<a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26475491/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> small 2015 study</a> conducted tests on active and non-active obese men before and after doing daily cryotherapy sessions over 10 days. At the end of the study, the non-active subjects had gained higher levels of irisin, a protein that helps convert regular fat into brown fat.But though these results are promising, more evidence is still needed to see if whole body cryotherapy can actually cause weight loss, Rose says.<h3>Reducing anxiety and depression</h3>Whole body cryotherapy may help improve mental health symptoms when it's used alongside regular treatment.A<a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7296110/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> 2020 study</a> found that depressed people who received cryotherapy had significant improvements in mood and <a href="https://www.insider.com/what-is-depression" target="_blank" rel="noopener">depression</a> symptoms, compared with those who only had standard treatment.The researchers believe this may be because cryotherapy can improve <a href="https://www.insider.com/how-to-sleep-better" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sleep quality</a> and reduce inflammation, which are both contributors to depression.In a<a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00005-008-0006-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> small 2008 study</a>, people who underwent 15 sessions of cryotherapy scored lower on both anxiety and depression scales compared to their scores before treatment.<h2>What conditions can cryotherapy help treat?</h2><ul><li>Chronic inflammatory diseases: Whole body cryotherapy may help fight the painful effects of chronic inflammatory diseases by<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S030645650800106X" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> decreasing your levels of pro-inflammatory proteins </a>and raising your levels of anti-inflammatory proteins.</li><li>Fibromyalgia: A<a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0965229917306994" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> small 2018 study</a> looked at how cryotherapy can affect people with fibromyalgia, a chronic pain condition. The researchers found that after 10 sessions of cryotherapy, the subjects had lower levels of pain and fatigue, compared with those who didn't get treatment.</li><li>Rheumatoid arthritis: A<a href="https://www.hindawi.com/journals/bmri/2015/409174/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> 2015 study</a> found that people with rheumatoid arthritis had lower levels of pain and fatigue after a two-week program of whole body cryotherapy.</li></ul><h2>Insider's takeaway </h2>Cryotherapy comes with risks if you exceed the recommended two to four minutes. "There is a risk of hypothermia if someone were to remain in the chamber for longer than an appropriate amount of time," says Rose."Further, if there is any metal jewelry, or if the skin is damp in any way, there is a risk of frostbite," Rose adds.Whole-body cryotherapy may offer some relief for people with chronic pain conditions, but more research is still needed to prove its other benefits and make sure that it's safe.However, these risks can be lessened if the chamber is controlled by a trained professional. HIIT may help you lose weight</h2>Since HIIT burns more calories because of EPOC, it can be a more convenient way to help you lose weight, since you don't have to spend as much time working out. A <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/30765340/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2019 review</a> analyzed 77 scientific studies. The review found that people who did HIIT workouts lost 28.5% more fat than people who did moderately-intense continuous exercise, like running. "With HIIT, your heart rate stays up for the entire exercise, which is optimal for burning calories, making this an effective option for weight loss," Navaretta says.<h2>3. HIIT builds many muscle groups </h2>Most HIIT workouts involve many different movements. This allows you to work out different groups of muscle during the same workout — for example, a HIIT workout might have you do squats, <a href="https://www.insider.com/benefits-of-push-ups" target="_blank" rel="noopener">push-ups</a>, and burpees — which all target different muscles. The intensity will also help build your muscles and improve their ability to keep working out. "This type of training boosts muscular endurance because the muscles don't get much rest," Navaretta says. For example, a <a href="https://ec.bioscientifica.com/view/journals/ec/6/7/EC-17-0159.xml" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2017 study</a> found that a six-week HIIT program improved muscle power in men, measured by <a href="https://www.scienceforsport.com/wingate-anaerobic-test/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">peak power output</a> (PPO). Before the HIIT program, the mens' average absolute PPO was 799 watts, and after the workout it was 865 watts, an increase of about 8%. Additionally, a <a href="https://link.springer.com/article/10.1186/s13098-017-0302-5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2017 study</a> found that a 12-minute HIIT workout affected the muscles more than a 40-minute aerobic workout for overweight female teens.
