The company's plans to bring in more capital to the country from its Chinese parent have not been successful so far. As per industry sources, the automaker has been waiting for government approval for around two years now and has therefore started looking for other options to raise capital. Elaborating on its roadmap, the company said it has plans to set up its second manufacturing plant in the country, taking its installed capacity to 3 lakh units per annum and roll out new products for the domestic market, including electric vehicles, as part of its five-year business roadmap in the country. The company currently rolls out products from its manufacturing plant in <keyword id="6389723" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="halol" source="Orion">Halol</keyword>, Gujarat, which it had acquired from <keyword id="4581" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="general-motors" source="Orion">General Motors</keyword>. The Halol plant can produce up to 1.2 lakh units per year. The automaker said it aims to launch 4-5 new cars in the country, with a focus on EVs. The company expects its EV portfolio to contribute up to 65-75 per cent of total sales in <keyword id="3658" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="india" source="Orion">India</keyword>, it noted. The automaker said it is also exploring setting up cell manufacturing and hydrogen fuel-cell technology through joint ventures or third-party manufacturing. MG Motor India plans to dilute majority stakes to local partners

Scientists have developed a new laser-based breathalyser test powered by artificial intelligence (AI) that they say can detect COVID-19 in real-time with excellent accuracy. The team from the University of Colorado (CU) <keyword id="107195" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="boulder" source="Orion">Boulder</keyword> in the US hopes that the frequency comb breathalyser-essentially using laser light to distinguish one molecule from another-could revolutionise medical diagnostics. "Our results demonstrate the promise of breath analysis as an alternative, rapid, non-invasive test for COVID-19 and highlight its remarkable potential for diagnosing diverse conditions and disease states," said study first author <keyword id="17375478" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="qizhong-liang" source="Orion">Qizhong Liang</keyword>, a <keyword id="6435115" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="phd" source="Orion">PhD</keyword> candidate at CU Boulder. "There is a real, foreseeable future in which you could go to the doctor and have your breath measured along with your height and weight...Or you could blow into a mouthpiece integrated into your phone and get information about your health in real-time," said <keyword id="2818533" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="jun-ye" source="Orion">Jun Ye</keyword>, adjoint professor at CU Boulder and senior author of the study published in the Journal of Breath Research. Between May 2021 and January 2022, the research team collected breath samples from 170 CU Boulder students who had, in the previous 48 hours, taken a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, either by submitting a saliva or a nasal sample. Half had tested positive, half negative. Overall, the process took less than one hour from collection to result. When compared to PCR, the gold standard COVID test, breathalyser results matched 85 per cent of the time. For medical diagnostics, accuracy of 80 per cent or greater is considered "excellent". The researchers noted that the accuracy would likely have been higher if the breath and saliva/nasal swab samples were collected at the same time. Unlike a nasal swab, the breathalyser is non-invasive. And unlike a saliva sample, users are not asked to refrain from eating, drinking or smoking before using it, the researchers said. The test doesn't require costly chemicals to break down the sample. And the test could, conceivably, be used on individuals who are not conscious, they said. The breathalyser test consists of a complex array of lasers and mirrors about the size of a banquet table. A breath sample is piped in through a tube as lasers fire invisible mid-infrared light at it at thousands of different frequencies. Dozens of tiny mirrors bounce the light back and forth through the molecules so many times that the light travels about 1.5 miles. Because each kind of molecule absorbs light differently, breath samples with a different molecular make-up cast distinct shadows. The machine can distinguish between those different shadows or absorption patterns, boiling millions of data points down to-in the case of COVID-a simple positive or negative, in a matter of seconds. The researchers are working to miniaturise such systems to a chip scale, allowing for what <keyword id="344472" type="General" weightage="80" keywordseo="liang" source="Orion">Liang</keyword> imagines as "real-time, self-health monitoring on the go". New AI-powered breathalyser can 'sniff out' Covid in real-time

In what is seen as a major standdown, the pilots' union of <keyword id="2573" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="air-india" source="Orion">Air India</keyword> has withdrawn its opposition to the new wage pact and employment agreement. In a joint letter issued on Thursday, the Indian Pilots' Guild (<keyword id="179256" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="ipg" source="Orion">IPG</keyword>) and Indian Commercial Pilots' Association (ICPA) withdrew their stand and told their members that they are free to sign new wage contracts offered by the new <keyword id="6355725" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tata-group" source="Orion">Tata group</keyword> management of Air India. "As dedicated <keyword id="4746568" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="air-indians" source="Orion">Air Indians</keyword>, we believe it is crucial to express our readiness to settle the dispute at hand and find an amicable resolution for the benefit of both parties," the IPG and ICPA said in a joint letter to their members. The letter further read, "Over the past year, our attempts to reach a resolution have been hindered by a lack of cooperation from the management. Their unwillingness to address our concerns and apathetic attitude has resulted in a prolonged stalemate and escalating tensions." "Upon the assurances given in the online 'Townhall Meeting for Pilots' and in the interest of the aspirations of Air India, The <keyword id="8555" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="tata" source="Orion">Tata</keyword> Group and our passengers, the Joint Directive No.01 of 2023, Sub: Unilateral Changes in Policies stands withdrawn," the letter titled as 'Withdrawn of Joint Directive Np01 of 2023', added. The announcement came after a joint meeting held on Thursday, wherein the unions' members were told that they are free to sign the new wage contract. Last month, the Tata Group-owned airline announced a new salary structure for pilots and cabin crew but the staff was disappointed with the revisions. Their main grouse was about promoting captains with more than four years of experience in management. In a communication to all employees including pilots and crew members in April this year, Air India management had said that they announced the revision of their employment contracts and revised compensation for flying staff. "I am reaching directly to our flying staff through this platform as currently there is no recognized union at Air India. This is within the framework of law," said Air India Chief Human Resource Officer Suresh Tripathi, had said in a video message. The airline had said that the contract sent is a compilation of applicable policies and existing rules. Wherever there are differences, their changes are introduced to have a performance and merit-based culture as would be the ask of any world-class and professionally run airline. In the last one year, they have been hearing all the concerns of their flying community through various forums and constant communication, the Air India management said. "Guaranteed flying allowance has moved upwards from existing 20 hours to fixed 40 hours. With our ambitious growth and large aircraft order, we as an organisation are confident to provide you more and more opportunities for flying. The fact remains that at 70 hours of flying, income across the board has increased. We are a productivity-oriented organisation, and anyone who is ready to contribute will grow and prosper," the airline had said. "Our Trainers who would be investing more time in training as we ramp up, have been given a significant increase in pay in the form of both fixed and variable. There is more than 40 per cent increase in the allowance for trainers," it added. Air India said flying allowance rates are one of the highest in the Indian industry, with even higher amounts beyond 40 hours. There used to be a difference in flying rates in the same pilot rank which has been done away with to promote fairness. They have introduced additional compensation during training of command upgrade and conversion training which was not existing earlier. There was not any service reward existing to recognise the contribution of experienced staff. A fixed amount has been added to salaries. "These are all changes we have introduced for the better and to become market competitive, which was a key ask. We have also introduced best-in-class employee insurance and other benefits which were not existing earlier at Air India to support the welfare of our flying staff," the airline's management had said. But that's going to change due to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/recession-outlook-mass-layoffs-not-happening-yet-2023-1">a persistently tight labor market</a>, which is seeing no relief as immigration trends in America remain subdued relative to previous years, according to the note.BofA said another factor that will push up inflation is a renewed spike in commodity prices as the <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/china-reopening-economy-covid-oil-demand-energy-fuel-crude-iea-2023-1">reopening of China's economy will spark a wave of demand</a> for oil. That's because a jump in the unemployment rate will coincide with a dismal 2% personal savings rate, a 15% surge in credit card debt, and a record average credit card interest rate of 19%."Consumer finance companies <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/jpmorgan-q4-bank-earnings-jamie-dimon-stock-market-news-today-2023-1">increasing provisions</a>... no bueno," Hartnett said, referring to the money being set aside to cover expected losses. The takeaway for investors is to do the exact opposite of what has worked over the past decade, according to the note. "Investment conclusion is super-trend of inflation assets over deflation assets remains in its infancy," he said.In other words, investors should own the new leadership assets like commodities and non-US stocks, according to BofA. The mega-cap tech trade that has dominated markets since the Great Recession will underperform in the years ahead, Hartnett warned. Investors should also own small-cap stocks over their large-cap peers, and value stocks over growth stocks, according to the note.While a recession could hurt these trades, as investors flock to recession-proof growth that's usually found in the tech sector, they will ultimately provide investors with the "next great entry points" into inflationary assets, Hartnett predicted. "Positioning says pain trade in stocks has further to go on upside; but fade any move toward S&amp;P 500 [at] 4,200; we think 4.5% [yields] in cash [is] a more sensible trade than chasing new highs in stocks," he said.
