The economic impact of an <keyword id="2074705" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="Expressway-network">expressway network</keyword> criss-crossing the country is all too obvious and the <keyword id="6404450" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="100" keywordseo="Ministry-of-Road-Transport-and-Highways">Ministry of Road Transport and Highways</keyword> (MoRTH) has already recommended a total <keyword id="2074707" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="E-way-network">e-way network</keyword> of about 18,637 km in the country. Development work is being done in three phases and is scheduled to be completed by 2022. During the Interim Budget, <keyword id="6355261" type="POSITION" weightage="60" keywordseo="Finance-minister">Finance Minister</keyword> <keyword id="43940" type="PERSON" weightage="60" keywordseo="P-Chidambaram">P Chidambaram</keyword> also told the Parliament the road network in the country witnessed over sevenfold increase at 3.89 lakh km over the past decade. 
 Does that mean we may soon see an <keyword id="2074709" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="100" keywordseo="E-way-ecosystem">e-way ecosystem</keyword> similar to the interstate system in the US? I know it can be tough to navigate. </li><li>Here's my list of the best transportation options for getting to and around the city. </li></ul>I've been hopping around Bangkok since 2010 and can attest that it's not the most straightforward metropolis to get around. Bangkok's transport infrastructure is extensive, and the traffic is notoriously bad, so having a good understanding of the different options and how they work is key to making the most of your time so you don't spend most of it stuck in congestion.Here is everything you need to know about navigating Bangkok quickly and affordably.<h3>Getting to Bangkok</h3>You'll likely be flying into Thailand through Bangkok's international Suvarnabhumi Airport. It is a major transport hub for Asia, connecting to all the other Southeast Asian countries such as Vietnam and Cambodia, which are usually serviced from here by smaller regional airlines, and across Asia with routes from India, Japan, South Korea, and China.There are currently no direct flights from North America to Bangkok (the route to Suvarnabhumi will take you through Doha or Dubai with Qatar Airways and Emirates Airlines respectively). There are some direct flights from Europe though, through cities such as London, Paris, and Frankfurt.Once you get to Suvarnabhumi, the airport has a lot to make you feel at ease like free Wi-Fi, a pretty good Thai food court, lots of international dining options, and even a massage spot.If you are just spending a few hours or a day in Bangkok, you might want to consider checking out the luggage storage stand on the basement level. You can store each bag here for 100 baht per day.To get from the airport into the city, there are a couple of options. The <a href="https://www.srtet.co.th/index.php/en" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Airport Rail Link</a> on the basement level is the only form of efficient public transport from the airport into the city. It costs 45 baht and takes about one hour to the downtown Ratchaprarop or Makkasan stations connecting to the main BTS Skytrain and MRT underground networks respectively.Otherwise, you need to take a taxi from the ground-floor taxi stand. It's essentially the only other transport option from Suvarnabhumi to greater Bangkok, since rideshares are not allowed to do airport pickups.Staff at the taxi stand speak English and print a slip with your desired destination address on it for the driver. The price runs on a meter costing around 350 baht ($10) to the city center, plus about 150 baht ($4) in surcharges for the taxi stand and expressways. If you are flying into Thailand from the US or elsewhere, chances are you will be coming in through Suvarnabhumi, but if you are flying in from Southeast Asia or Thailand, you'll probably land at Don Mueang.There aren't very good public transport options to and from this airport, so you'll need a taxi. This can take up to an hour into the city, depending on traffic.<h3>Getting around Bangkok</h3>Bangkok experiences intense gridlock, and public transport can be helpful in this regard. During certain times, like heavy rains and rush hour, long main roads like Sukhumvit and Silom can be congested for hours, in my experience.A fair amount of walking may be necessary from inter-city train stops depending on where you need to go. It also services Bangkok's railway station, Hua Lamphong, where you may depart or arrive to and from other parts of Thailand. Used by local commuters to connect from residential areas to the inner city, it makes similar stops as the Skytrain does downtown (for example, to the CentralWorld and MBK malls), it's a transport option you won't take for convenience but for an adventure, since it's totally unique to Bangkok.These boats arrive at stations every few minutes and only stop if you wave them over. At lightning speed, the boat workers jump out and tie the boat to the pier, and you jump right in. A boat worker daringly walks along the edges ticketing passengers (8 to 20 baht depending upon distance).When buying your ticket, say which stop you want to get off at. It'll be your job to watch the names on the piers as they pass by, stand up to signal you'll be getting off, and jump right back out again.Grab rideshare app In recent years, the ride-hailing app <a href="https://www.grab.com/th/en/transport/taxi/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener sponsored">Grab</a> has become a convenient way to book taxi and motorbike rides. These days, it tends to even be more affordable and transparently priced than hailing taxis and motorbikes from off the street. I've lived in Bangkok for years and think it's a challenging city to navigate. Here's what any visitor should know about its airports, boats, and trains.

The silicon valley of India, Bengaluru, is too noisy and and perhaps even over-hyped. We aren’t saying this, but the start-ups based out of that region claim as much. So, what are they doing about the situation? A few of them are quietly shifting their base from <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/searchresult.cms?query=coimbatore">Bengaluru to Coimbatore</a> to avoid the hullaballoo of the state capital and focus on quality. Some of them include Dhruv Kumar of online medical advice platform, iCliniq who shifted to Coimbatore 3 years ago after his 2 year stint in Bengaluru. 
 
"I wanted to be out of all the noise and focus on building a quality product," said Kumar. "There are events all the time and the place is flooded with funding stories. Those days, we thought we were a tech startup and did not focus enough on the health and business side." 
 
A much-focussed development and the wait for the product to mature have been rewarding for him. iCliniq now has more than 1,000 doctors on its platform and they have so far addressed tens of thousands of health issues. It gets a large portion of revenue from the US and Europe. 
 
"Entrepreneurs are celebrated in <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/indian-govt-wants-more-indian-airlines-to-take-up-international-routes-says-civil-aviation-minister/articleshow/43165558.cms">Coimbatore</a>," the 27-year-old told ET, cheerfully. The cotton-growing region saw its first industries in ginning and moved on to make garments, machinery, automobile and many ancillary products. It is often called the 'Manchester of South India', drawing comparison with the first industrial city. 
 
Several young entrepreneurs like Kumar, who started up in Bengaluru are shifting to Coimbatore. Do-PartTime, a part-time job discovery portal, is another example and one of the reasons for the shift was talent retention. "Every company has a dynamic workforce, which frequently shifts, and a static workforce with loyalty. In a place like Coimbatore, the teams stick around," said Kumar. 
 
Coimbatore has pleasant weather conditions like Bengaluru and is seeing its fair share of startup activity. The <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Know-why-GAP-HM-chose-Delhi-over-Mumbai-and-Bangalore/articleshow/47328005.cms">Coimbatore c</a>hapter of The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE), a non-profit consortium that promotes entrepreneurship, has identified 47 active startups. 
 
One of the catalysts for them is the educational institutions in the region that have helped establish a sound technical ecosystem, TiE-Coimbatore President Selvakumar said. 
 
There are five incubation centres in and around the city, almost all of them set up by a technical education institution. PSG STEP, the incubation arm of PSG Institute of Technology, was established in 1998, much before any other college, including IIM Ahmedabad, did so. 
 
The centre incubates startups in IT, electronics and mechanical streams from Coimbatore. NanoTechnolgy was added to the list recently.

Move over Bengaluru, Coimbatore is the new start-up city

New Delhi, Feb 27 () redBus is planning to expand its bus ticketing business globally and aims to garner 35 per cent revenue of this segment from overseas operations over the next 3-4 years, a top company official said on Wednesday. The company, which is part of the Nasdaq-listed MakeMyTrip group, currently garners just around 10 per cent of its bus ticketing revenues from five international locations -- Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Peru and Colombia. redBus's overall annual revenues from the bus ticketing vertical, including India and international operations, stood at around USD 85 million. "We are looking to scale up international business and expect around 35 per cent of the revenues to accrue from overseas locations in the next 3-4 years," redBus CEO Prakash Sangam told . He said the company is currently focussing at Latin American and Asian countries to expand its base globally. redBus launched operations in Singapore and Malaysia in 2015. It acquired a majority stake in Peru-based bus ticketing platform Busportal in the subsequent year. With this acquisition, the company launched operations in Peru followed by Colombia. When asked to comment on the domestic bus ticketing business, Sangam said the segment faced some slowdown since September last year but expressed hope that things will improve in the next fiscal. "If there is improvement in the economy over the next 3-6 months it will be beneficial for us as well. On the positive side though, with new expressways being built and overall road infrastructure getting better, we expect growth to continue," he added. Besides, favourable regulations on the part of the government would also help in the growth of the sector, Sangam said. "There has been talk about contract carriage permits and one nation one tax regime. If such things happen then it would help the sector," he added. redbus, which is the world's largest online bus ticketing platform, saw its bus ticketing business grow by 38 per cent in the third October-December period of the current fiscal. Sangam said the company is also eyeing incremental growth in the bus ticketing business with the expected increase in online bookings going ahead. "We have tie-ups with 23 state transport corporations. Online booking segment currently remains very small. It is just around 12 per cent of the overall bookings. If online bookings grow, it will automatically help us," he noted. redbus, which came into being in 2006, till date has globally sold more than 180 million bus tickets and has customer base of around 20 million users. The Bengaluru-based firm on Thursday launched rPool, a car pooling/bike pooling platform for intra-city commute in Delhi-NCR region. It has already launched the service in Bangalore, Hyderabad and Pune. As part of the initiative, office goers can avail and offer rides in their personal cars and bikes while commuting between home and workplace. rPool can be accessed directly from within the redBus mobile app. "We would focus on 8-10 big cities in the first phase. These cities have huge population of people who commute on daily basis," Sangam said. He further said: "If we can get to one lakh rides in next 1-2 years, it will be a significant figure." When asked how the company would generate business from the vertical, Sangam said they would charge a small commission in the future as they are yet to figure out the amount. MSSMKJ

redBus eyes revving up bus ticketing revenues from overseas operations

New Delhi, Nov 15 () Debt-ridden telecom operator Vodafone Idea on Friday said it is exploring to monetise data centres as part of the company's debt reduction plans.
 Apart from data centres, Vodafone Idea (VIL) plans to monetise its 11.15 per cent stake in Indus Towers on completion of the Indus Towers-Bharti Infratel merger, and is also exploring options to monetise nearly 1.6 lakh kilometres of intra-city and inter-city fibre as well as data centres.
 "Separately, we are also exploring opportunity to monetise our data centres. We believe this will provide us financial flexibility," Vodafone Idea MD and CEO Ravinder Takkar said.
 Gross debt on Vodafone Idea as of September 30, 2019 was Rs 1,17,300 crore including deferred spectrum payment obligations of Rs 89,170 crore to the government .
 Vodafone Idea on Thursday reported a consolidated loss of Rs 50,921 crore -- the highest ever loss posted by any Indian corporate -- for the September quarter on account of liability arising out of the Supreme Court's order in the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) case.
 The company has estimated liability of Rs 44,150 crore post the apex court order, and made provisioning of Rs 25,680 crore in the second quarter this fiscal. The company also set aside Rs 4,822 crore for certain assets that it may not be able to use due to shifting of network from 3G to 4G technology.
 Vodafone Idea also derecognised the deferred tax assets amounting to Rs 13,940 crore recorded up to June 30, 2019.
 The Supreme Court, last month, ruled in favour of the government and directed telecom companies, including Vodafone Idea, to pay dues as demanded by the Department of Telecom.
 Vodafone Idea has said its ability to continue business will depend on relief sought from the government and positive outcome of the legal option it has (filing of a review petition).
 It said the company, through the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), has made representations to the government to provide relief to the telecom sector.
 This includes request to not press for the AGR liability payment and grant waivers, not levying spectrum usage charges (SUC) on non-licenced revenue, reduction of licence fee and SUC rates and use of GST credit for payment of government levies.
 The industry body has requested the government to allow payment to be made in installments after some moratorium, and grant a moratorium of two years for the payment of spectrum dues beyond April 1, 2020 up to March 31, 2022. PRS MKJ

Vodafone Idea exploring option to monetise data centres to pare debt

New Delhi, Nov 15 () A day after it posted a staggering Rs 50,921 crore loss for the September quarter, Vodafone Idea on Friday said it believes the government is aware of the "tremendous stress" being faced by telcos and wants a healthy sector with three private and one public operator.
 In a post-earnings investor call, Vodafone Idea CEO Ravinder Takkar said the company has been engaging "very positively" with the government and that its discussions on telecom stress began even before the AGR ruling was pronounced by the Supreme Court.
 "In our engagements...the response of the government has been very consistent. They said they want this sector to be healthy, it is a very strategic sector, too important for the country, too important for Digital India vision...Secondly, they have said to us that they want to see three private players and one public sector player in this sector," Takkar said.
 The company believes the Centre is looking at a "comprehensive solution" for the sector with an aim to restore the industry's health, he said.
 "We hope to hear something from them very soon," he added.
 On a specific question on minimum tariff fixation, Takkar said he did not wish to speculate on how floor price mechanism can be implemented.
 "We know it is in the purview of the regulator and government and it can be implemented...We know it has been done in certain other countries in the region, but I don't want to speculate on what they would implement or how they would implement," he said.
 Vodafone Idea Ltd (VIL) plans to monetise its 11.15 per cent stake in Indus Towers on completion of the Indus Towers-Bharti Infratel merger, and is also exploring options to monetise nearly 160,000 kms of intra-city and inter-city fibre as well as data centre.
 Akshaya Moondra, chief financial officer of VIL, said the company continues to remain engaged with its financial creditors but asserted that there is no acceleration of payment which has happened.
 "From time to time, some banks have requested us if we could pre-pay them any amount...we have declined that. We continue to remain engaged with all our financial creditors but there is no acceleration of payment that has happened," he said.
 On vendor finance, Moondra said the company has strong vendor partners and that "they are already supporting us through vendor financing route".

Tesla investors will vote on the offer, and they're worried about the impact of this deal on Tesla's balance sheet (SolarCity needs cash to fund its business, and Tesla needs cash to build its cars).<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Tesla Motors</div></div></div>They also don't love the closeness of these two companies. Musk is the primary shareholder of both, and his cousin is CEO at Solar City. (They will, its worth noting, recuse themselves from votes on the matter at the board level and shareholder level).There's other reasons to wonder why Tesla has to be saddled with a cash burning solar-panel financing company. Musk laid out a vision of product integration that looks something like this: use the SolarCity panels to power your home, use Tesla's batteries to store that power, and use some of that power to charge up your electric car. No fossil fuels required, ever.<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/wall-street-analysts-on-teslas-offer-for-solarcity-2016-6">But as Business Insider's Akin Oyedele reported</a>, Wall Street's analysts are questioning whether Tesla should be pursuing this deal while it still struggles to get its part of this enterprise - building the cars - right.Of course, there is an argument to be made that this doubt is an opportunity. In fact, assuming a deal is reached and progresses toward completion, there's a return of something like 18% for traders willing to bet on that.But if Musk is going to rally investors behind his deal, he's going to need the support of his legions of fans: the investors who readily pony up cash every time Tesla looks to raise a few billion dollars, and who believe in his long-term vision of creating a company that changes everything about the way we consume energy - not just with cars, but in our homes and workplaces as well.Even there, though, he seems to be trying their patience. A noted Tesla bull - so much so that he's been criticized for his willingness to think about how the company will change everything about how we drive - is Morgan Stanley's Adam Jonas. Wall Street is turning its back on Elon Musk

I lived in Switzerland for two years and then moved to the US. Life in general in Switzerland is IMO, better than U.S., and here's why:

<li>Higher standard of living: Swiss cities, houses and food are all top quality. Crime is very low, so you'd feel pretty safe roaming around in the middle of night all alone. There're no beggars on street, and every body around you looks very well off, it's surreal. You can drink from any public water fountain in the city, and all public places are kept really clean. There're many reasons why Zurich consistently fares as one of the top 3 cities in the world to live in. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mercer_Quality_of_Living_Survey" target="_blank" class="external_link">Mercer Quality of Living Survey</a></li>
<li>Higher pay and lower taxes: Swiss wages are pretty high. If you're a waiter, you get paid minimum 20 CHF per hour. If you're an engineer or a banker, your salary is better off than your US colleagues. <li>Amazing public transportation / travel opportunities: You're right in the middle of Europe. From Zurich, Germany is an hour away, France and Italy are 2. Everything else is a few hours by flight. The trains are all on time, and the transportation both intra-city and inter-city is very good. You can pin point any remote location and reach there solely by public transportation. Switzerland is also part of Schengen treaty, even though it's not part of European Union. That means, citizens of visa deprived countries (like India / China) can roam around freely in EU if they're living / working in Switzerland. <a href="http://www.sbb.ch/en/home.html" target="_blank" class="external_link">SBB: Swiss Train System</a></li>
<li>Better work life balance, and emphasis on sports: People work to live there. 8-5 culture is the norm, and people don't work on evenings or weekends. This applies not only to office going folks, but also to general stores / shopping malls etc. Minus the bars, the entire city of Zurich closes at 7pm on weekdays, and opens only until 4pm on Saturday (Thanks for correction: <a href="http://www.quora.com/Thierry-Blancpain" target="_blank">Thierry Blancpain</a>). Nothing is open on Sundays. Everybody I knew was doing at least 2 sports on a regular basis, which also explains why Swiss are so fit.</li>
<li>Almost free education even during undergrad studies: As opposed to US, where an undergrad can cost you a mortgage and your parents have to save their entire lives for, the best of Swiss universities charge only ~500 CHF per semester, regardless of nationality. This includes world renowned universities like ETH Zurich, and EPFL Lausanne, and is true even for master studies. <a href="http://www.rektorat.ethz.ch/students/finance/fees/index_EN" target="_blank" class="external_link">ETH - Rektorat - Semestergebühren/-beiträge</a></li>
<li>Clean smog-free air / beautiful mountains and landscape: Swissreally care about the environment. Air conditioners are frowned upon, if not entirely forbidden. Even when summer brought 32 degrees Celsius (~90F), we had to make do with fans both at home and at office. Ah, the horror! But well, it's good for the environment, and summer doesn't last that long. Another good example is the Gotthard Rail tunnel that Swiss are building to cut down on the number of trucks between Switzerland and Italy. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gotthard_Base_Tunnel" target="_blank" class="external_link">Gotthard Base Tunnel</a></li>
<li>Food / Chocolate / Beer / Wine: The best of Swiss chocolate isn't sold at airports worldwide (I'm looking at you Lindt). In Switzerland, you get to eat Sprüngli, which IIRC, has its main branch in Paradeplatz in Zürich, right in front of Credit Suisse and UBS headquarters, and isn't available outside the country. In Switzerland, you can find good selection of Italian, French and German food as well. So, why did I move? Now, here're 3 reasons where U.S. (well California) fares better than Switzerland:

<li>Weather: Switzerland isn't known for their great weather. It's cold and wet 9 months of a year, and hot and wet for the rest. California boasts of a weather straight out of heaven (minus the earthquakes that is).</li>
<li>Silicon Valley: If you're a software engineer, your Mecca lies in the San Francisco bay area. The choice of great ambitious companies, and cutting edge technology is unmatched in the rest of the world. Zurich only has a few software companies, so if you choose to live there, you're pretty much stuck working for them.</li>
<li>Foreigners are tourists: Swiss don't believe in foreigners contributing to their society. For them, foreigners are something they have to bear with, and protect their society from. They're really kind hearted people once you get to know them, but you wouldn't feel at home living there.</li>

7 Reasons Why Life Is Better In Switzerland Than America

NEW DELHI: Mukesh Ambani-owned <keyword id="6354504" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="80" keywordseo="Reliance-Jio">Reliance Jio</keyword> Infocomm is on a hiring spree, aiming to bring in as many as 500 telecom professionals on board in the next few months as it races towards launching its much-awaited services likely by September. 
 
"About 300 professionals will be hired for senior roles and the company has begun negotiating with circle heads of various telecom operators. It has so far hired close to seven circle heads," a person familiar with the matter told ET.

India is divided into 22 telecom circles, each comprising a city, state or, in a few cases, a group of provinces. Reliance Jio owns airwaves in all circles. 
 
Another person said the company had already hired Murali Kittu in a circle head role from the nation’s No. 1 carrier, Bharti Airtel, where he was chief operating officer for the Tamil Nadu service area. Reliance Jio had also recently brought on board Amitabh Jaipuria, former chief executive of AGS Transact Technologies, as the president of its fixed wireline business. 
 
"The company wants to roll out voice, data and provide fibre to home connectivity all at one time," the first person said. 
 
Reliance Jio didn’t respond to requests for comment. 
 
A third person told ET that Reliance Jio has ramped up hiring in the past three weeks after it was able to firm up an organisational structure. 
 "Unlike an <keyword id="6354924" type="PERSON" weightage="40" keywordseo="Idea-Cellular">Idea Cellular</keyword> which is very decentralised in decision-making, or an Airtel or a <keyword id="15492" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Vodafone">Vodafone</keyword> which have devolved certain powers to the circle heads and so on, Jio has decided to go in for a very centralised structure," the person said. This means, most decisions at Reliance Jio will be taken at the national headquarters in Mumbai while their execution will be left to the circles. 
 
Under the overall command of Manoj Modi, a confidant of Ambani, Reliance Jio is led by group President Sandip Das, who looks after the day-to-day operations with managing director Sanjay Mashruwala mainly managing network rollout. 
 
Other key men in leadership role include Kiran Thomas, assistant vice president, and Mathew Oommen, who is president of strategy, network and products. 
 Mahendra Nahata, head of Himachal Futuristic Communications whose Infotel Broadband Services was bought over by <keyword id="6355199" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="Reliance-Industries">Reliance Industries</keyword> for its telecom foray in 2010 and renamed Reliance Jio, is also a key member of the leadership team. 
 
"While Manoj Modi looks at the business day in and day out, Mr. Ambani is also keenly involved, with progress reports and briefings coming to his desk at least once every week," a fourth person said. 
 
The company is planning to hire two sets of leaders for certain senior roles: one an Indian with specific domain knowledge and the other an expat who could advice on knowledge transfer and global best practices. 
 
According to sources, the company is considering expats for roles in technology and customer service areas, and wants to stick to Indian talent for positions in operations, sales and marketing as well as supply chain. 
 
Reliance Jio acquired pan-India airwaves in 2010 to provide high-speed Internet services, paying Rs 13,000 crore for 20 MHz in the 2300 MHz band. It had been unable to launch commercial services because of technology limitation of the frequency.

In February this year, it won airwaves in the 1800 MHz band — which is ideal for offering voice services — across 14 circles for about Rs 11,000 crore. This allows the company to offer high-speed data services on the 2300 MHz band, and fall back on the 1800 MHz for voice offerings. The 1800 MHz band can be used for data services as well. 
 Reliance Jio has been stitching up agreements with rivals Bharti Airtel and <keyword id="6368075" type="CITY" weightage="40" keywordseo="RCom">RCOM</keyword> for leasing telecom towers and using the latter’s inter and intracity fiber network, in a bid to speed up the launch of its services.
