Despite cheapest data plans and nearly 700 million internet users, <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> is at a dismal 49th spot globally when it comes to <keyword id="11104836" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="internet-inclusion">internet inclusion</keyword> and gender equality in accessing the world wide web, a Facebook-Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) study has revealed. India is tied with Thailand in 49th place this year on the scores of <keyword id="11104835" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="internet-availability">internet availability</keyword> (77th position globally), affordability (20th spot), relevance (49th position) and readiness (29th) categories. "India's glaring underperformance in the availability pillar is, in <keyword id="2366428" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="large-part">large part</keyword>, the reason for its placement, and this weak performance is owed to <keyword id="11104837" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="low-internet-usage">low internet usage</keyword> and quality and widening gender gap in mobile phone and internet access in the country," the <keyword id="6354576" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="facebook">Facebook</keyword> said in the 'Inclusive Internet Index' report. India is set to reach one billion internet users by 2025. There were over 687.6 million internet users in India in 2020. The Facebook 'Inclusive Internet Index' looked at 120 countries, representing 98 per cent of global GDP and 96 per cent of global population. Nearly 70 per cent of people around the world believed that their increased internet usage in all aspects of life signified a "new normal" that will continue indefinitely in the future. "Only 3 per cent said that no aspect of their lives had seen a dramatic shift online. Unable to meet in person, those under the most stringent lockdowns relied on the internet for nearly every conceivable activity, including forging human connections," the study showed. The majority of countries (77 out of 120) saw improvements in internet inclusion overall, in part because of increased availability. "However, the gap in availability is closing at an unacceptably slow rate, and other challenges are moving to the forefront, such as how many people are actually using the internet when it is available," the Facebook-EIU study said. People in low-income and lower-middle-income countries relied on online education during the pandemic more than those in wealthier countries and predicted that they will continue to use online channels for education even after the pandemic has subsided. "Yet schoolchildren in low- and lower-middle-income countries lost nearly 16 weeks of schooling by October 2020 due to the pandemic and significantly lower internet access and adoption, compared with only six weeks of loss in high-income countries," the report lamented. India stands at 49th position in inclusion and gender equality in accessing the internet, reveals Facebook-EIU report

The worlds longest internet blockade in Myanmars conflict-ridden northwest has entered its second year, preventing the arrival of humanitarian aid and COVID-19 information. Myanmar's government has been battling the Arakan Army (AA), an armed group fighting for the independence of ethnic Rakhine Buddhists, in a bloody war since January 2019, reports Efe news. Authorities shut down internet services in the area on June 21, 2019 which has been extended until August 1, making it the world's longest blackout. The move has drawn criticism from international and domestic rights organizations, as well as several Western embassies in the country who on Sunday issued a statement demanding its removal. Laetitia van den Assum, a Dutch diplomat and member of a commission that seeks to find solutions to the Arakan conflict, told Efe: "The internet shutdown creates a black hole. Basic information for the functioning of society is sucked out of it. "It makes it difficult to assess the volume of aid required." Due to the conflict, more than 130,000 people have been displaced in the remote areas of northern Arakan and southern Chin State, where the digital blockade has failed to defeat insurgents. The report says that the global average connection speed grew at 8.6% an average to 5.6 Mbps from the third quarter of 2015.

Talking of average peak connection speed, Singapore topped the charts at 135.7 Mbps, while India again tanked with 21.2 Mbps.

The action is all in integration, data and automation. It is about what you do with the data. In a <keyword id="14306462" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="manufacturing-setup" source="Orion">manufacturing setup</keyword>, the efficiency and bottom line gains from being able to see how each step in the production line is performing is the untapped potential. Start simple, but scalable No matter what the scale of your manufacturing setup is, or which sector it is, if there is a sensor, then it can be an IoT. In its simplest form, data is just made accessible remotely, to be analyzed for actions by a human, or in its more advanced state, an AI does it all. The going after low hanging fruit approach works just fine here. The biggest and most immediate benefits can be realized by connecting the most volatile part of the production process to any sort of a monitoring system (even something as simple as a web-accessible dashboard). Say for example, your shop floor has a machine whose output is temperature dependent and is prone to reach higher than recommended temperatures frequently. Typically, an alarm would alert the operator, who in turn would have to intervene to not only address the cause of the issue, but also make sure those in charge of downstream processes expect a disruption in the assembly line. Now enter a simple IoT device that transmits the temperature data in real-time across the businesses, making it visible to anyone with the right privileges. Even before the threshold temperature is reached, all stakeholders receive advance warning of a possible disruption, the incident logged, maintenance crew (possibly not on location) alerted, and so on. This is an example of just one device communicating a sensor’s value in real-time bringing operational efficiencies. Scale brings intelligence, and analytics Scalability, interoperability, are critical considerations to any IoT solution. Continuing from the previous example, imagine such data being collected from all locations where the same machinery is used. Add to this all related data (such as load, continuous hours of running, ambient temperature, parameters of the cooling system, etc) also being collected across the floors. Now, the ability to extract actionable intelligence increases exponentially. It becomes easy to find root causes by pattern matching, simply because there’s all of the data available time-stamped. Upgrades or decisions on equipment purchase can be made on robust data. Taking the nightmare out of logistics One can argue that GPS tracking and sharing of vehicles’ location is one of the early and simpler adoptions of IoT. Just that it wasn’t called by that name. Quite literally, the vehicle (the thing) is connected to the Internet to be able to share its data (its location gathered by a sensor, the GPS chip). Checkpoints in the supply chain, from trucks, right down to weigh bridges in warehouses being IoT enabled gives data that can feed a host of other applications. Combine this material availability information with data on demand for different end products, data on assembly line capacity and any machinery with downtime, etc., and you can achieve production efficiency and optimizations that were only a dream a decade ago. Implemented well, all of this decisioning can be automated based on set parameters. When this IoT visibility is extended into vendors’ supply chain and processes, prediction ability transparency increases multi-fold. With data comes AI AI acting on massive amounts of real-time data is how the shop floor and manufacturing as we know it can be revolutionized. Even if a machine learning AI solution is out of reach for your operations, you should actively consider at least a rudimentary rule-based application to suggest actions based on the data streams your IoT environment is generating. Even a simple application can bring out intelligence that you wouldn’t have expected to be available from the shop floor. While AI has made into manufacturing with the early adopters, the opportunity is immense across sectors to reap efficiency from making sense of what their shop floors are doing. AI can predict defects in production even as they may occur, or predict a premature equipment failure, and in either case, instruct other locations to ramp up production, accordingly modify logistics arrangement, and so on. All this, in real-time, without human intervention. <ul><li>India’s central government’s <keyword id="116246" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Department-of-Telecommunications">Department of Telecommunications</keyword> has issued a notice to the state governments to keep from implementing ‘unwarranted’ <keyword id="6471018" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="Internet-Shutdowns-in-India">internet shutdowns in India</keyword>. </li><li><keyword id="3944051" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Internet-Shutdowns">Internet shutdowns</keyword> in India have skyrocketed to being the highest in the world, with 40% of them occurring the volatile state of Jammu and Kashmir. </li><li>The DoT has asked the state governments to thoroughly ensure that they are following the parameters set by the Telegraph Act.</li></ul>The Indian government’s Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued a notice to its state governments warning against issuing an ‘internet shutdown’ in situations where ‘public emergency’ or ‘public safety’ are not in question. Those are the two clearly identified rules of the Telegraph Act that allows for the ‘temporary suspension of telecom services’. The parameters for internet shutdowns in India may be broad, but they are clear in their intent. Despite this clarity, internet shutdowns in India are the <a href="https://www.internetshutdowns.in/">highest in the world</a> with 130 shutdowns occuring in 2018 according to the internet shutdown tracker by the Software Freedom Law Center. That’s nearly double the amount from 2017 that stood at 79 internet shutdowns in India. Here’s how states manage to manage to overlook a basic law The Indian government is well aware of the problem and knows that in certain cases this could be treated as a violation of basic human rights. Especially in the a state like Jammu and Kashmir that has cumulatively lost its access to internet for <a href="https://sflc.in/sites/default/files/reports/Living%20in%20Digital%20Darkness%20-%20A%20Handbook%20on%20Internet%20Shutdowns%20in%20India%2c%20May%202018%20-%20by%20SFLCin.pdf">nearly a month</a> over the last four years. Of the total number of shutdowns this year, 40% of them happened in that state. The <a href="https://thewire.in/government/jammu-kashmir-has-lost-18-days-of-mobile-internet-access-over-last-four-years">reasons of revoking</a> citizens’ access to internet ranges from blocking access to social media to blocking off all telecom services in specific localities. But, in most cases it has been a statewide shutdown of the internet under the guise of protests, agitation and ‘precautionary measures’. Internet shutdowns have become a tool in the hands of state government and law enforcement authorities where they need a ‘quick-fix’ solution to ‘potentially’ volatile situation. And, in every scenario, there are arguments to be made on the legitimacy of the reasons by implementing an internet shutdown in India. Especially when you look at the example of the internet shutdown in the western state of Rajasthan, where the state government <a href="https://www.medianama.com/2018/08/223-rajasthan-orders-its-26th-internet-shutdown-in-2018-seconds-jk/">justified</a> it was to ‘prevent cheating during examinations’. Public safety was not in question and neither was it a public emergency as stipulated by the Telegraph Act. An estimate by the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) from earlier this year projects that internet shutdowns in India may have <a href="http://www.newindianexpress.com/business/2018/apr/26/internet-shutdown-cost-indian-economy-usd-3-billion-from-2012-17-study-1806393.html">cost the economy</a> nearly $3 billion between the years of 2012 and 2017 — not to mention the hampering the Digital India initiative, as highlighted by the DoT’s directive. Internet shutdowns in India have skyrocketed — but now the Indian government wants that to stop

<ul><li>The Indian government has been shutting down internet services in select parts of the country amid protests against the <keyword id="6564012" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="citizenship-amendment-act">Citizenship Amendment Act</keyword> (CAA).</li><li>The internet shutdowns have led an outcry from human activists that such measures aren’t coming down through the ‘right channels’.</li><li>The accelerated pace and expanse of the internet shutdowns also has China citing India as ‘setting an example’.</li><li>Businesses aren’t immune to the effects either as many online retailers rescheduled orders or reported a dip in sales.</li></ul>Amid the protests, violence and discord over India’s newly formed Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), authorities have been shutting down access to the internet in selected areas to control the situation. When the internet isn’t being shut down, it’s at least being slowed down — known as throttling. Human rights activists claim that the order did not come down the ‘right channels’ making the entire exercise ‘illegal’.

 In fact, India has turned so infamous for it during the last few months that China — known for its strict surveillance of online activity — is citing India as an example. India’s internet shutdown shows normal practice for sovereign countries," said an editorial by Qing Qiu in <a href="http://en.people.cn/n3/2019/1217/c90000-9641267.html">People’s Daily</a> — China’s largest newspaper and a controlled entity of the country’s ruling party. Internet shutdown capital of the world The government is allowed to sanction an internet shutdown in the case of a public emergency under the Temporary Suspension of Telecom Services (Public Emergency or Public Safety) Rules, 2017. The problem is that internet shutdowns have become so common in India that it now has a reputation for being the ‘<a href="https://www.livemint.com/mint-lounge/features/inside-the-internet-shutdown-capital-of-the-world-11575644823381.html">internet shutdown capital of the world</a>’. Kashmiris had to endure a four-month-long shutdown while the networks in Assam and parts of West Bengal were sporadically cut and activated.

 Since 2012, the internet has been shut down in India a total of 375 times and most of them have occurred during the last two years — 134 in 2018 and 103 in 2019. It means that shutting down the internet in a state of emergency should be standard practice for sovereign countries," according to the <a href="http://en.people.cn/n3/2019/1217/c90000-9641267.html">People’s Daily</a> editorial. Impact of internet shutdowns The damage of an internet shutdown isn’t restricted to missing messages on WhatsApp or an update on Instagram either. Although, Prime Minister Narendra Modi did ironically try and send out a tweet his ‘brothers and sisters in Assam’ when it was under an internet blackout.

 Internet shutdowns are affecting businesses as well. Between 2012 to 2017, they cost the economy nearly $3 billion, according to an estimate by the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (<a href="https://www.newindianexpress.com/business/2018/apr/26/internet-shutdown-cost-indian-economy-usd-3-billion-from-2012-17-study-1806393.html">ICRIER</a>). This time around, food delivery apps like Zomato, Uber Eats and Swiggy saw their <a href="https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/cabs-to-food-e-biz-hit-by-internet-shutdown/articleshow/72920805.cms">volumes dip by 10 to 20%</a> in Delhi. Grofers, an online grocery delivery service, had to reschedule 20,000 to 25,000 of its orders in Lucknow.

 In addition the effect on businesses, this might not be the best time for the Indian government to be exercising its power in such a way with the Personal Data Protection Bill underway. The bill is currently under discussion by a joint committee after being tabled in the Parliament in its last session.
