"The most difficult things that we are doing now is to test all of these functions together. A new study published in <a href="https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanplh/article/PIIS2542-5196(24)00114-1/fulltext">The Lancet Planetary Health</a> by an international team of researchers reveals a terrifying truth: over 7% of daily deaths in 10 major <keyword id="20026638" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="Indian-cities" source="keywords">Indian cities</keyword> are attributed to <keyword id="19900550" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="air-pollution" source="keywords">air pollution</keyword> caused by <keyword id="22110704" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="PM2-5-pollutants" source="keywords">PM2.5 pollutants</keyword> exceeding the World Health Organization's (WHO) safe limits. These PM2.5 pollutants are microscopic particles, 2.5 micrometres or less in diameter, that come from <keyword id="2839914" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="vehicle-emissions" source="Orion">vehicle emissions</keyword> and industrial activities. Imagine tiny daggers — that's what these PM2.5 particles are like, infiltrating deep into lungs and even the bloodstream, wreaking havoc on our health. The study found that PM2.5 levels breach WHO guidelines a staggering 99.8% of the time in these cities. The analysis covered major cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune, Shimla and Varanasi. A staggering 7.2% of deaths in these cities, translating to roughly 33,000 annually, were associated with short-term PM2.5 levels exceeding the WHO's recommended limit (15 micrograms per cubic metre) between 2008 and 2019. Delhi, unfortunately, takes the crown for the most polluted. A shocking 11.5% of its annual deaths are attributed to air pollution, translating to a devastating 12,000 lives lost each year. The link between PM2.5 and mortality is undeniable. Researchers found that a mere 10 microgram per cubic metre increase in these pollutants correlates with a 1.4% rise in daily deaths. This risk factor doubles when considering only levels below India's air quality standards, which are, worryingly, less strict than the WHO's recommendations. But here's a surprising twist: the association between PM2.5 and death is even stronger in cities with generally cleaner air, like Bengaluru and Chennai. This suggests that locally produced pollutants, from sources like construction dust or waste burning, might be significant contributors. There is a glimmer of hope, however. The study emphasises that implementing stricter air quality standards and utilising proven pollution control methods from other parts of the world can be game changers. Lowering and enforcing stricter air quality limits will save tens of thousands of lives per year, emphasises Joel Schwartz, a co-author from Harvard University. This study serves as a stark wake-up call. The air we breathe in many Indian cities is a gamble, with every breath potentially harmful. Taking decisive action to curb pollution is not just about a cleaner environment, it's about saving the lives of millions of Indians.

Her employment has been verified and the following has been edited for length and clarity.The first time I ever watched the "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/psychology-black-mirror-nosedive-social-media-2016-10">Black Mirror" episode "Nosedive"</a> — about a world in which people constantly rate one another — I thought, wait, I've worked for a place like this before.The summer after my sophomore and junior years at Harvard University, I interned at Bridgewater Associates, the world's largest hedge fund. Its intense culture <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ray-dalio-screamed-the-fund-book-excerpt-2023-11">is not for everybody</a>. Founder Ray Dalio once said around <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-its-like-to-work-at-ray-dalio-bridgewater-associates-2019-4">30% of employees quit within the first 18 months</a>.And while I definitely see parallels between my time at Bridgewater and that "Black Mirror" episode, I <a target="_blank" href="https://www.tiktok.com/@dariarosereal/video/7355211305873149226">look back fondly on my time there</a>. If I hadn't gone to law school, I 100% would've returned to work there full-time.<h2>I was drawn to Bridgewater's tenet of meaningful work</h2>In my sophomore year, I heard about Bridgewater from another student in a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/harvard-task-force-issues-scathing-report-on-final-clubs-2016-4">social club I was in at Harvard</a>. She'd been recruited as an investment associate and was looking for other people interested in working there.I did some research and was drawn to the fact that one of Bridgewater's main tenets is about <a target="_blank" href="https://www.principles.com/principles/4e857597-33e6-484d-86d5-dc2da102118e/">meaningful work and meaningful relationships</a>. She told me about a management associate position and helped forward my résumé.After applying, I had to take a Myers-Briggs Personality Type test and <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bridgewater-associates-personality-tests-2016-8">several other screening tests</a>. Next, we had a <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bridgewater-associates-job-application-process-2016-8">full-day interview</a> at the Bridgewater campus in Westport, Connecticut.Authenticity is a big thing at Bridgewater, so I went into the interview wanting to be completely myself.I was first put in a room with other applicants for a moderated debate-style interview. The rest of the day was spent in multiple rounds of interviews with managers. Some were case studies — kind of similar to consulting — and others involved deep intensive questions about who I was as a person. How did you grow up? Are you an only child? How do you think this affected you? How do you think this impacts your working style on a team? What wakes you up in the morning? How do you deal with criticism?The interviewers I had were incredibly empathetic, and our conversation felt real and vulnerable.About a week or two later, I got a call that I got the job. When I saw my <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hedge-fund-salaries-analyst-bridgewater-citadel-aqr-point72-two-sigma-2020-11">offer package</a> — I was like, whoa, this is a lot of money — and the great perks like housing, transportation, and a signing bonus, it was really a no-brainer. I thought, I'm 100% working there.<h2>The internship was incredibly fun</h2>Most of the interns lived together in dorms for the summer, which was really cool and special. To help us bond, we did fun activities like group dinners, our own version of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-tough-mudder-went-from-harvard-business-to-tv-show-on-sky-and-cbs-2017-1">Tough Mudder</a>, and a scavenger hunt.Every day, we would arrive at the campus by around 8 a.m. and leave around 7 p.m. I was a management associate intern in the office of the CEO, and we did basically any special project the CEO needed. I worked on a lot of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dei-programs-america-diversity-equity-inclusion-pushback-how-to-fix-2024-2">diversity initiatives</a>, figuring out how to make Bridgewater more streamlined and accessible to employees.At the time, Dalio's book "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.principles.com/">Principles: Life and Work</a>" wasn't out yet, so one of our tasks was to read the manuscript and give feedback on it.<h2>Ranking each other was a big part of Bridgewater's culture</h2>We ranked people daily using numbered "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.principles.com/principles/3290232e-6bca-4585-a4f6-66874aefce30/">dots</a>," a real-time check-in of how everyone was doing.In each meeting, we'd each have an iPad in front of us, showing a list of everyone else present. Throughout the meeting, we'd <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bridgewater-ray-dalio-radical-transparency-app-dots-2017-9">give people dots</a> for things like humility, composure, willingness to touch a nerve, openmindedness, and assertiveness. By the end of the meeting, our whole screen would <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ray-dalio-instant-feedback-tool-on-zoom-review-dots-2021-7">just be filled with dots</a> — some red, some green. It could get distracting sometimes — like, who gave me a three? — but we'd try to ignore it and stay in the moment.Because we were <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ray-dalio-bridgewater-public-ranking-system-employees-book-says-2023-11">constantly being evaluated</a> on what we said, people were way more conscious when speaking. Instead of talking just to talk, people tried to make their points succinct and easily understandable, or they'd get a negative dot.This criticism wasn't just limited to peers or supervisees. We were also encouraged to give dots to our bosses, managers, and even CEOs.Dot outcomes went onto our "<a target="_blank" href="https://www.principles.com/principles/a3d4f223-82d9-48ca-b12b-d00e344821c8/">baseball cards</a>," which had information about each employee's role and their strengths and weaknesses, to create a more vivid picture of what each of us was like.<h2>Everything was recorded</h2><a target="_blank" href="https://www.principles.com/principles/f6412dca-b3f9-4dd0-bb65-274869dd21ed">Radical truth and radical transparency</a> were very important at Bridgewater. Everything was recorded. If I wanted to go back and see why I got a certain dot, I could go back to the recording and listen to what I'd said. I could even look up my friends' dots and see how they were doing each day, even if I wasn't in the meeting.One time, my friend threw her water bottle in the trash rather than recycling it. I don't know who saw her, but someone gave her a negative dot. It made me realize, wow, people really do care on a microscopic level and they're paying attention to you.<h2>Pain + reflection = progress</h2>Getting so much <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-to-deal-with-giving-constant-feedback-career-development-2021-10">constant feedback</a> was difficult at first. At times I was like, oh, that's harsh. It's never great to hear that you didn't do something right or that someone didn't like something you said. We had a button on our iPads that we could press whenever we felt pain, and then we'd write a reflection about the situation. The idea was that <a target="_blank" href="https://www.principles.com/principles/4a903526-2db6-4a0a-9b71-889868f0f475/">pain plus reflection equals progress</a>.Depending on the severity of the pain or what had happened, sometimes <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/bridgewater-co-ceo-on-firms-transparent-culture-2019-1">we'd have a diagnostic session</a> to get to the root of the problem, such as if someone's ego got in the way of them asking for help. These sessions could sometimes be uncomfortable, but ultimately were really helpful and led to growth and better day-to-day operations.I was really good at receiving constructive feedback and was always really high on the humility scale. I like to improve and have a growth mindset rather than taking things personally. On the days when I felt a little bit more sensitive or more emotional, I didn't want to hear the more critical feedback. But when I was able to look back at it from a less emotional standpoint, I was like, oh, okay, they had a point here.Dalio wanted us to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ray-dalio-lessons-bridgewater-management-transition-plan-2016-4">try to take our egos out of our work</a> as much as possible and really look toward a higher self. From time to time, we'd have to do something called "force rankings," where we ranked our team members based on who was the most and least helpful. It never felt good to be at the bottom of that scale, which happened to me multiple times.A lot of smart people who go to elite schools are used to being the best at everything and being on top all of the time, but that's not realistic. There are going to be days where you're super on it, and then there are days that you might not be.At Bridgewater, there was no hiding that fact.<h2>Gossip was not allowed</h2>It was a no-gossip environment. We weren't allowed to talk about other people behind their backs — a huge principle was that you speak up, say it to the other person's face, dot them, and be transparent.If you were talking about someone in the context of work, you'd have to <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-bridgewater-associates-explains-spying-on-workers-2016-7">send that tape to them afterward</a>. When I got my full-time offer to join Bridgewater, my manager sent me the tape of them deliberating and I got to hear what they genuinely thought about me while I wasn't in the room.I think that's really valuable, especially these days when some corporate environments involve fakeness and niceties to your face and people aren't upfront about what they actually think about you and your work.At Bridgewater, there was none of that. It sounds counterintuitive, but the constant recordings did encourage us to be more open and put everything on the table — there's no incentive not to.I really appreciated the candidness. Now working in law, we have so much going on sometimes that we don't necessarily get direct feedback all the time. As with most companies, feedback usually happens during an annual or semi-annual review, and sometimes by that time, it's become a bigger problem.With the dot system at Bridgewater, if there was an issue, we'd know that day, and it'd be diagnosed that week. I miss that part about it.<h2>The best ideas won</h2>We were really encouraged to push back on supervisors and superiors, because one of the tenets was that we were an <a target="_blank" href="https://www.bridgewater.com/culture/bridgewaters-idea-meritocracy">idea meritocracy</a> and the best idea will rise to the top, not based on the seniority of the person who put it forth.Because debating and disagreeing with each other was encouraged, I learned so much from my colleagues. I had my viewpoints challenged and I challenged theirs. I can't imagine another workplace like that that allows for that type of growth and honest feedback.<h2>My experience made me who I am today</h2>I think Bridgewater's culture might be a little bit different now, especially because <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/ray-dalio-exits-bridgewater-2022-10">Ray Dalio isn't there anymore</a>. But I can't emphasize enough how transformative and eye-opening my experience was. It helped shape who I am today, especially how I think about feedback, work, and the relationships I have at work.I've never worked with a more brilliant group of unique people. There were poker stars, musicians, and people who wrote comedy. We all did so many different things but were united under this Bridgewater umbrella and really brought our full selves to work and gave it our all.The experience prepared me for life, even more than just for a corporate career. It helped me grow a thicker skin; not a lot fazes me now.A few years after working at Bridgewater, I was <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-it-cost-to-be-on-the-bachelor-2022-3">on "The Bachelor."</a> People scrutinized me and said so many mean, horrible things.My Bridgewater experience prepared me to understand that everyone will have judgments or perceptions about you, but you don't have to take them all in. We'd always say, "It's just one dot."One dot doesn't make up the whole picture. The <keyword id="22186137" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="US-transport-security-body" source="keywords">US transport security body</keyword> has sought a unique "one-stop agreement" with <keyword id="19895063" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="India" source="keywords">India</keyword> to end the rescreening of <keyword id="19915258" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="passengers" source="keywords">passengers</keyword>, asserting that the "really powerful" concept will raise global <keyword id="20051539" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="aviation" source="keywords">aviation</keyword> <keyword id="19900703" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="security" source="keywords">security</keyword> standards. Addressing the India US Aviation Summit here on Tuesday, David Pekoske, Administrator of the US Transportation Security Administration (USTSA) said that the one-stop security concept is "very reachable" between the countries. "I think very tangible and very reachable between India and the United States is one-stop security," he said. "It's a concept that expedites the flow of passengers and baggage to their destinations by eliminating the duplication of security controls at transfer points," Pekoske said. He said in the case of a one-stop agreement, passengers who reach an airport in another country and have a connecting domestic flight would not need to be rescreened and their checked bags would go from aircraft to aircraft. Terming it a "really powerful" concept, Pekoske said it raises global aviation security standards. "Flights inbound to the United States are more secure. If there's a reverse agreement between the United States and India where US screening satisfies Indian requirements, that means that flights to India would also be more secure. It does require the regular exchange of information," he said. "It requires improvements to security processes to maintain the agreement. It yields a reduction in security costs through better allocation of resources, reduces flight connection times and missed connections, and improves the passenger experience," he said. Pekoske said the two countries should consider signing a memorandum of agreement to share sensitive security information. "We have a category of classification of information that is not classified in the true sense of classified material, but it is sensitive enough that it needs additional protections," he said. He said that whenever there is a sharing of sensitive security information -- which is critical to a growing partnership -- there is a need to have a memorandum of agreement which covers the aspects of that sharing arrangement. He noted that both the TSA and India's transportation security posture were born of cruel tragedy. For India, it was the bombing of Air India 'Kanishka' Flight 182 in 1985, while for the TSA, it was the 9-11 attacks in 2001. "These tragic events were paradigm shifts in how we both thought about transportation security that continues today," he said. Meanwhile, addressing the summit, US Federal Aviation Administrator Michael Whitaker said that India and the United States need to work together on issues like aviation safety. Asserting that safety is a team sport, he said that sharing data between the two countries can allow better identification and mitigation of risks in the sector. "Our (US and India's) national systems of aviation are inextricably linked into a single global network," he said, adding that the two counties have adjoining air spaces, integrated supply chains, and international services that connect their economies and people. "We need to work together on issues like safety, we need to share ideas and share innovations, especially in how to safely incorporate some of these new technologies into our airspace," he said. Noting that the two countries have different systems that will take different approaches to solving challenges, he said, "We can and should work together to share best practices and learn from one another." "We all have an interest in increasing safety within our respective countries, but we must work together to increase the level of safety in the global aviation system," he added. "This means sharing data. Sharing information allows us to better identify and mitigate risks before those risks become accidents and even before they become failures to the safety layers in our system," he added. "When I started in aviation, accidents were unfortunately not uncommon. They were almost annual events, and safety regulators learned from those accidents and made the system safer," he said. "For the past couple of decades, we've moved beyond that model, and accidents are now extremely rare, and they are simply unacceptable as an outcome," Whitaker said. "Our challenge is to bring safety to the next level, and that means we need to proactively analyse data and find those risks of failure and mitigate those risks before they happen," he said. Asserting that all the job categories in the aviation sector are highly sought after, he said that "for regulators, it means new questions about how we oversee those operations". "We have to find a safe yet nimble way to regulate these new entrants who are operating at the speed of a startup while we are operating at the speed of government, he said. He added that there is a need to figure out how to close the gap, identify these risks and leverage technology to incorporate them safely into the airspace. "In the US, we've seen the public perception of safety and risk in the system evolve over time. As more people have access to aviation, the expectation grows that the system will be completely safe," he asserted. Moudgil, one of the seasoned pros in the squad, is making a comeback and will lineup alongside Sift in the women's 50m rifle three positions. Twenty-year-old Rhythm Sangwan will be participating in two events, women's 10m air pistol alongside Bhaker and the 10m air pistol mixed team. "The preparation has been going good. The range is beautiful. I was a little upset staying away from main village in Paris. It is not as I expected but I am here for the competition and win and not pass any comments on the Games Village. Olympics is the biggest stage out here," said Sangwan. Among the male participants, only Tomar has been part of the Olympics before. Tomar, member of the gold winning team at the 2023 World Championships, will be seen in the men's 50m rifle three positions alongside Swapnil Kusale. Record shooting contingent out to end India's 12-year medal drought

<ul class="summary-list"><li>An air traffic controller in Australia was found asleep under a blanket at the end of a shift.</li><li>He had worked seven night shifts in nine days due to staffing changes, a safety investigation found.</li></ul>An air traffic controller at a major Australian airport was found asleep at the end of their night shift while they were the only person on duty, according to an investigation by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB).The worker had signed on for their night shift, which ran from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., at the Brisbane Centre, a major <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/becoming-air-traffic-controller-career-pros-cons-of-job-2022-1">air traffic control center</a> in Brisbane Airport.Brisbane is Australia's third-busiest airport, handling around 22.6 million passengers annually. It has consistently been among the 100 busiest airports in the world and was ranked <a target="_blank" href="https://www.worldairportawards.com/worlds-top-100-airports-2024/">as the world's 32nd-best by Skytrax in 2024</a>.On December 9, 2022, the morning shift controller arrived at work at 5:15 a.m. to find their night shift counterpart asleep at the console.The worker was discovered lying across two chairs with a blanket covering them, according to <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.atsb.gov.au/sites/default/files/2024-09/AO-2022-065%20%28Final%29.pdf">the report</a>. They were still wearing their headset, and the air situation display (ASD) screensaver was on.After ensuring there was no traffic in the area, the station was handed over to the oncoming controller.The report noted that the Brisbane Centre building was cooler at night, and it was considered normal practice for blankets to be used during night shifts.The ATSB's report blamed multiple night shifts in a short space of time, the worker's low workload, and an ineffective risk management system for the incident. It noted that the worker had 10 years of experience as a controller and had been in their current position for three years. However, due to last minute roster changes, they had worked their seventh night shift in nine days and had not taken the recommended rest period in between.There had been no traffic or scheduled flights in the airspace the controller was responsible for and a system supervisor had been on duty at the front desk of the center.However, the report found that cumulative fatigue was not being effectively managed at the center."Likely due to an underlying lack of resources within Airservices Australia, there was an over-reliance on tactical changes to manage the roster," investigators said.The ATSB said it would update its safety procedures and fatigue risk management regulations in response to the incident.Airservices Australia, which runs the Brisbane Centre, has increased the overall number of air traffic controllers and enhanced internal processes since the incident, according to the report. The ATSB will continue to monitor the issue.In the US, fatigue has been a growing safety concern as <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/airport-collision-close-call-solutions-sleep-runways-air-traffic-controllers-2024-2">shortages of air traffic controllers</a> have driven up the amount of overtime required for those that remain.
