Intel expands 12th gen Alder Lake family with new P and U series, will power next-gen slim laptops

Intel announces its 12th-gen 'Alder Lake' desktop processor line-up

Chip-maker <keyword id="28115" type="General" weightage="100" keywordseo="intel" source="Orion">Intel</keyword> has reportedly confirmed that its 'Alder Lake BIOS' source code has been leaked by a third-party on the anonymous imageboard website <keyword id="593135" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="4chan" source="Orion">4chan</keyword> and Microsoft-owned open source developer platform <keyword id="1505863" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="github" source="Orion">Github</keyword>, in a 6GB file containing tools and code for building and optimising 'BIOS/UEFI' images. The working of the 'BIOS/UEFI' code of the computer is to initialise the hardware before the operating system has loaded, reports Tom's Hardware website. The company said in a statement that "Our proprietary UEFI code appears to have been leaked by a third party". "We do not believe this exposes any new security vulnerabilities as we do not rely on obfuscation of information as a security measure. This code is covered under our bug bounty programme within the <keyword id="15214118" type="General" weightage="50" keywordseo="project-circuit-breaker" source="Orion">Project Circuit Breaker</keyword> campaign, and we encourage any researchers who may identify potential vulnerabilities to bring them to our attention through this programme," a company spokesperson was quoted as saying. Intel said it is reaching out to both customers and the security research community to keep them informed of this situation. Meanwhile, Intel was yet to confirm who leaked the code. Also, Intel said there shouldn't be any security-related issues as it doesn't "rely on obfuscation of information as a security measure". According to the stats released by the company, rendering capabilities have gone up by up to 43% gen-over-gen, but this comparison was made between an 11th-gen Intel Core i5 12600 and 12th-gen Core i9 12900 processors on a PugetBench Premiere Pro benchmark tool. The same 12th-gen processor reported a 31% improvement over the AMD Ryzen 7 5700G in the same test. You may want to take this information with a grain of salt till the actual benchmarking figures surface on the web. Upgraded Evo-branded laptops &amp; support for foldable Announced in early 2021, Intel Evo is a badge that requires laptop manufacturers to adhere to minimum standards to deliver a quality experience in an ultrathin notebook. This year, Intel’s high-performance H-series chips would be joining the Evo line-up. On top of this, other key attributes were also added to the Evo line-up, including larger screen sizes of up to 16-inches and creator oriented displays. Along with Qualcomm, Amazon will be another client of Intel Foundry Services, as Intel will be packaging for Amazon Web Services(AWS). In <a href="https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/events/accelerated.html">a webcast</a>, Intel revealed its future plans and roadmap to compete with its foundry rivals by 2025. As part of the plan, Intel will not be using the nanometer-based node nomenclature that the company has been using for years. The company will begin with the 12th generation Alder Lake chips that will launch later this year. Intel will use a new nomenclature which it says will give “a more accurate view of the process nodes across the industry”. The decision might have been a result of playing catch up with its competitors Samsung, AMD and others in terms of node size. Intel's roadmap to Angstrom-based chips Taking on its competitors, Intel will now refer to its 10nm chips as Intel 7, suggesting that it is as powerful as AMD Ryzen’s 7nm chips. The Alder Lake chips will be the first chips to use this technology and the company claims that these chips will offer a 10-15% improvement in performance per watt over the previous generation. The 7nm chip will be called Intel 4, as the company wants to take on AMD’s smaller node nomenclatures in the future. The chip will use extreme ultraviolet (EUV) technology that is currently seen in Samsung and TSMC’s 5nm node. These chips will only be available in 2023 and Intel says it will offer about 20% improvement in performance per watt. In 2024, we will see the Intel 3 and Intel 20A. Intel 3 will be the second-generation 7nm chips that are expected to offer better performance per watt than the Intel 4 chips. The Intel 20A process will be used in Qualcomm's next chip. It will see a new processor architecture called RibbonFET, which is an upgrade from the FinFET process that the company has used since 2011. It promises higher transistor density and smaller nodes. The process will also use PowerVia technology that lets chips be powered from the back. With the Intel 20A process, Intel wants to bring the ‘Angstrom era’ that will reduce the node size to less than a nanometer. At its 'Architecture Day 2021', Intel set the stage for new generations of leadership products. During the event, Intel architects provided details on two new x86 central processing unit architectures -- first performance hybrid architecture and Intel Thread Director; Intel's next-generation data center processors; infrastructure processing unit architectures; and upcoming graphics architectures.
