New Delhi, Jun 20 () A lot of students hopeful of securing a seat in Delhi University with their achievements in sports and extra-curricular activities, will not get a chance to showcase their talent as the varsity will not have sports and ECA trials in view of the coronavirus pandemic. Only candidates with NCC and NSS certificates will be considered for admissions under the ECA category while admissions under the sports category will be granted based on merit certificates. According to the guidelines for admissions through Extra-Curricular Activities (ECA), colleges shall communicate on the DU UG Admission portal the number of seats under ECA Quota (Supernumerary) concerning NCC/NSS in men/women as applicable. Admission on the basis of ECA shall be administered through centralized ECA Merit List based on the highest marks obtained in the uploaded NCC/NSS certificates and order of their preferences of courses and colleges as indicated by the applicant, according to the admission bulletin uploaded by the varsity. The applicant seeking admission on the basis of ECA is required to register online on the DU UG Admission portal. "They should also register for a maximum of five courses and colleges in order of their preference where they wish to get admitted. These preferences will be utilized later in the allotment of course and college," the varsity said. An additional registration fee of Rs 100 will apply in ECA category in addition to charges for (UR/OBC/SC/ST/PwBD/EWS) registration, it said, adding that applicants are required to upload self-attested copies of five NCC/NSS certificates. Applicant must secure minimum four marks in the marking of the uploaded NCC/NSS certificates to be eligible for admission on the basis of ECA. Marks will be awarded to applicants based on their performance under five different heads for NSS -- regular activity, working hours, national camps, special camps, Pre-RD Camp. A candidate will be awarded marks out of a total of 100. Marks will be awarded to applicants based on their performance under five different heads under NCC -- Regular Activity, Examination, Camps, Special Camp and RD Camp For applicants in sports, an aspirant can register for a maximum of three games/sports. "They should also register their preference of colleges and courses for a maximum of five in order of their preference where they desire to get admitted. These preferences shall be utilised later in the allotment of college and course. An additional registration fee of Rs 100 will apply in sports category in addition to charges for (UR/OBC/SC/ST/PwBD/EWS) registration," the bulletin said. DU offers admission under the sports quota in 27 disciplines including archery, athletics, cricket, football, badminton, hockey, swimming, wrestling, tennis, judo, and basketball, among others. Under ECA category, there are 14 recognised activities - creative writing, dance, debate, fine arts, music, music instrumental including tabla, harmonium, sitar, dholak, drums, guitar, and sarod; theatre, NCC, NSS, and yoga, among others. As per standard norms, candidates used to be first shortlisted on the basis of merit certificates earned over the last three years. DU admissions: University not to have sports, ECA trials in view of COVID-19 pandemic

Delhi's Seelampur Basti could not stop rejoicing when 14 children who grew up here were abe to make their way to the prestigious <keyword id="6360099" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Delhi-University">Delhi University</keyword> by the time the second cut-off list was out. 
 
14 students, 12 of whom are girls, have secured admission in popular North campus colleges out of the 78 students who appeared for class XII examination from Seelampur slum area. 
 The highest scorer Saugatha has managed to secure a seat in Urdu Honours in <keyword id="117655" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Kirori-Mal-College">Kirori Mal College</keyword> at 86.5 per cent. Her father is a street vendor. 
 
Even as the credit goes to these hard working students who have made their basti proud, significant efforts by an NGO called Asha in educating the slum children and helping them achieve higher education, has been instrumental in helping such bright kids enter Delhi University year-on-year. 
 
Last year, a whopping 114 students guided by this NGO had made the cut. Sandeep, with 94% marks, got the highest score in this group in 2015. He lived in a slum in north Delhi’s Peeragarhi and managed to secure a seat in Rajdhani College for B.Com (Hons). The year before, in 2014, least 150 slum kids got admission in DU. 
 
For these students, the main difficulty was not just to get resources to study, but a larger battle of convincing parents to allow them to pursue education as against using them to start earning and contributing to the family income. For Asha the NGO, there have been such challenges of counseling the family, especially that of girls, before they can start educating and preparing the kid for exams. Their help then extends to dressing them up with new clothes, planning their travel, helping them fill college admission forms, get educational loans for those who wish to study in private colleges. 
 
Since 2008, Asha has been helping students from the slums to go to university. In the first batch, 20 students had got admission in DU and the numbers have been increasing since then. Although this year the students qualifying to DU are less than last year, its too early to say because three cut-off lists are still awaited.

"We won Bronze the last time too, we've made this a habit," Sreejesh said while speaking to ANI. The former player further spoke on his retirement saying that it's not the end of his journey. "It's the end of a journey. But if one leaves, several others come in. Happy that my team played for me &amp; I'm leaving with medal," Sreejesh added. The Harmanpreet Singh-led side secured a historic bronze medal, defeating Spain 2-1, marking their second consecutive Olympic medal, an achievement last accomplished 52 years ago. The match, held at the Yves-du-Manoir Stadium here on Thursday, was especially significant as it also served as the farewell game for legendary Indian goalkeeper PR Sreejesh, who played his last international match. Moscow has fiercely defended its vision of a prospering economy, but the evidence speaks for itself, Sonnenfeld and Tian say. Soaring prices and ailing consumer sentiment have hit key sectors in <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/commodities/russia-economy-putin-moscow-car-industry-recession-ukraine-war-finances-2023-7">Russia's economy</a>, and Moscow is <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/russia-economy-putin-ukraine-war-military-spending-budget-kremlin-inflation-2023-10">paying a huge cost</a> to keep its war machine running.The nation is in such dire straits that citizens could even start turning on Putin later this year, they predicted, assuming the West continues to supply military and financial aid to Ukraine. Tian, meanwhile, has a near-photographic memory and is a highly analytical thinker, colleagues mentioned."Steven does a lot of the analytic heavy lifting, and I do the flamboyant color," Sonnenfeld said of their work together.People who have worked with them also say the pair is extremely passionate about their work, and both are often known to answer emails at all hours of the night and early morning."We don't believe in regular sleep patterns," Sonnenfeld added. "Actually, we know it's very important, but sometimes when there's a sense of urgency, we do seriously dive into the crisis du jour. We just don't like bullies, whether or not it's Putin or some other bravado."

There are flying cars, but the injustice of everyday mundanity endures for everyone except for one person—a woman wearing AirPods far below them, bobbing her head to a soundtrack of "Where Is My Mind?" It's a cover of the 1988 Pixies song by Australian-via-Zimbabwe singer-songwriter Tkay Maidza, her<a href="https://open.spotify.com/artist/1kMPdZQVdUhMDKDWOJM5iK" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> second biggest hit to date</a>. Maybe the song sounded familiar to you: it was recently used in the final episode of Donald Glover's scary stan series "Swarm" on Amazon Prime. According to one licensing expert who spoke to Insider, the song has been licensed 91 times across movies, TV, ads, and brand deals. Somehow, a 36-year-old song from an alt-rock band has become one of the most ubiquitous songs of 2023. "Lawyer, doctor, teacher, and preacher — we had all of them in the family."But West pursued a different path, which began after he was almost electrocuted.When West was about 10 years old, he had found an old radio discarded near his home in rural Virginia. Wanting to see if it still worked, he brought it home and reached for an electrical outlet. It was a humid day, and the outlet sent sparks rattling through his body from head to toe."It was terribly intriguing from a standpoint of how electricity worked," West told Johns Hopkins. "I had to learn more about that."<h2>Becoming more immersed in Black emancipation</h2>From a young age, West was exposed to the Black freedom movement. His grandmother was formerly enslaved, and his parents were both active in organizations that advocated for the emancipation of Black people."[W.E.B.] Du Bois was one of the people I learned about early in life. All of this has been part of my upbringing. It's a very important part of why I'm interested in diversity," West said in his interview with Johns Hopkins Magazine.West's mother lost her job at the Langley Air force Base due to her involvement in the NAACP, which Joseph McCarthy <a href="https://jacobin.com/2020/05/mccarthyism-red-scare-civil-rights-movement">decried</a> as communist and a threat to America. She later became one of the "Hidden Figures" who were <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/katherine-johnson-hidden-figures-nasa-human-computers-2016-8">instrumental in helping NASA develop their space program</a>.At Temple University, where he studied physics, West read works by Leon Trotsky and began attending Black Panther meetings. "I became more immersed in racist attitudes toward Black people." West said. "Living in Philadelphia, I saw a whole different perspective from the standpoint of poverty and the deplorable situations in which some people are forced to survive. I lost confidence in the system."<h2>Advocating for minorities in science</h2>West has remained devoted to uplifting minorities, values instilled in him by his family. In the 1970s, he was a member of the Association of Black Laboratories Employees at Bell Labs, where he invented the microphone, that pushed to fund research programs to help more than 500 non-white students graduate with degrees in STEM.The inventor also pioneered groundbreaking research that helped the Black community. In the late 1980s, West and his colleagues at Cornell University and Bell Labs developed a way to more accurately read blood pressure. West said he was motivated by the fact that heart disease and hypertension rates are <a href="https://www.heart.org/en/health-topics/high-blood-pressure/why-high-blood-pressure-is-a-silent-killer/high-blood-pressure-and-african-americans">higher among African Americans</a>.West has also studied the acoustic environment of hospitals, <a href="https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2005ASAJ..118.3629B/abstract">finding</a> that loud noise levels affect staff and patients. He has also <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/at-87-this-baltimore-inventor-has-250-patents-to-his-name--and-hes-still-at-it/2018/06/19/0e457ad6-5fa8-11e8-a4a4-c070ef53f315_story.html">worked</a> on a device to detect pneumonia in lungs of young children — ultimately fulfilling, albeit in a roundabout and perhaps unintentional way, his father's wishes for his son to pursue medicine."It all comes back," West said. "It's all circular."

Hurricane Irma is devastating the Caribbean: Barbuda, St. Martin, and Anguilla have been hit so far

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">VCG/VCG via Getty Images</div></div></div><ul class="summary-list"><li>Leveraged loans make up an approximately $1.6 trillion market, and a variety of financial experts have raised concerns about the booming industry.</li><li>These loans are typically packaged into complex credit instruments which are then purchased by pension funds and mutual funds, among others.</li><li>The market has received criticism for the weak protections afforded to investors, with some fears that it could lead to major issues in the event of an economic downturn or recession. </li></ul>Leveraged loans have caught a lot of heat in recent months.These loans are, in simple terms, to riskier companies which have amassed a large amount of debt relative to their earnings. And the market for these loans has boomed.Amid an extended period of low interest rates, 2017 saw a record amount of leveraged loan issuance, with 2018 following close behind, with over $700 billion in total issuance. The outstanding total of outstanding loans is estimated to be between $1.4 and 1.6 trillion.A vast swathe of companies, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/giant-tech-firms-like-uber-tesla-are-lapping-up-junk-debt-and-demand-is-growing-2018-11">including</a> Space X, Uber, and Tesla, have taken advantage of beneficial lending conditions of late to pile up large amounts of debt which has often come with loose legal requirements, known as covenant-lite, which provide lenders with limited protections. And as the market's grown, the warnings have gotten louder. The Federal Reserve and the Bank of England have both expressed concern about the market, while the Financial Stability Board (FSB) <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/leveraged-loans-fsb-inquiry-into-16-trillion-market-2019-3">said</a> it will investigate the growing industry."The deterioration in underwriting standards for leveraged loans is increasingly worrisome," Ron Temple, cohead of multi-asset and head of US equity at Lazard Asset Management, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/leveraged-loans-fsb-inquiry-into-16-trillion-market-2019-3">said</a> in an email to Business Insider. The combination of increasing leverage and decreasing covenant protection "should be a warning sign to investors," he said. "As we assess the global credit landscape, this segment appears susceptible to disruption in the event of a downturn."<h2>CLO, the next scary acronym?</h2>These leveraged loans are often bundled up together with other similar loans and sold in the form of collateralized loan obligations (CLO). As the Bank of England's financial policy committee has noted: "Leveraged loans are typically sold to non-bank investors (including to collateralised loan obligation funds), whose ability to sustain losses without materially impacting financing conditions is uncertain."A recent comment<a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/18/opinion/wall-street-risk-debt.html?dlbk=&amp;emc=edit_dk_20190319&amp;nl=dealbook&amp;nlid=62100337_dk_20190319&amp;te=1"> piece</a> in the New York Times by former banker William D. Cohan likened the repackaging of these loans to the debt instruments that helped trigger the financial crisis of 2008. He wrote: "A decade ago, the high-yield investment du jour pushed by Wall Street was <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/20/nyregion/20mortgage.html?module=inline" title="">mortgage-backed securities</a> - home mortgages that had been packaged up and sold as "safe" investments all over the world. Nowadays bankers and traders are pushing another form of supposedly "safe" investment, the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/19/business/economy/clo-corporate-loans.html?module=inline" title="">"collateralized loan obligation," or C.L.O</a>."Specifically, the concern is that:<ul><li>Some of the companies that have taken on leveraged loans will not be able to manage the huge debt pile they've amassed, and corporate bankruptcies will begin to rise in a downturn.</li><li>85% of all leveraged loans are now "covenant-lite," in that they lack traditional requirements for companies to maintain certain financial benchmarks that protect the investors who pay for them, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/leveraged-loan-record-87-percent-covenant-lite-2019-2">according</a> to the Leveraged Data &amp; Commentary unit of S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence.</li><li>If corporate bankruptcies rise then weaker lender protections that go with "covenant-lite" deals will see the ultimate owners of the debt struggle to recover their investments, hurting returns.</li><li>Investors in CLOs will likely bear the brunt of corporate bankruptcies, according to Fed chairman Jerome Powell, while JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dimon-says-shadow-banks-in-line-for-pain-2019-1">has said Wall Street banks aren't that exposed to the market</a>.</li><li>"For now, my view is that such losses are unlikely to pose a threat to the safety and soundness of the institutions at the core of the system, and instead, are likely to fall on investors," <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-11-28/fed-s-first-stability-report-shows-worry-on-risky-corporate-debt">Powell said late last year</a>. </li><li><aside data-state="ready"><div>And Dimon has said the <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/dimon-says-shadow-banks-in-line-for-pain-2019-1">largest banks tend to invest in the safest part of the market</a>, a category that accounts for about half of all outstanding leveraged loans. </div></aside></li><li>So who are the investors in CLOs? Think hedge funds, mutual funds and pension funds. In other words, as Cohan writes, "you and me."</li></ul><h2>The market could continue to grow</h2>The leveraged loan market is only a major issue in the event of companies running into economic difficulties. And the market could continue to grow for some time yet. Views on a potential US recession vary but generally signals <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/yield-curve-inversion-one-of-four-horsemen-predicting-us-recession-2019-3">point</a> to a potential downturn at some point by 2020. The other issue to consider is the broader economic context for the rise of leveraged loans. The limited appeal of US Treasuries and other government bonds has led to investors seeking better returns from other parts of the market. This seems unlikely to change given the Fed's <a href="https://markets.businessinsider.com/news/stocks/federal-reserve-statement-interest-rate-decision-march-2019-2019-3-1028046266">decision</a> to not hike rates Wednesday and it indicating it would keep them static for the rest of 2019. Recent figures indicate the leveraged loan market was hotting back up with February issuance standing at $61.2 billion, up 50% from January but some way down on the same month in 2018, <a href="http://www.abladvisor.com/articles/15914/leveraged-loan-issuance-rebounds-in-february-lpc">according</a> to Reuters LPC. A $1.6 trillion credit market could batter the global economy. And it's you that will take the hit if it implodes, not Wall Street.

<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image on-image">Screenshot via CNBCMarc Harris is the head of research at RBC Capital Markets.</div></div></div><ul><li>Investment-research firms are scrambling to comply with new European regulations known as MiFID II.</li><li>We sat down with the head of a quickly rising Wall Street research firm to discuss what's hot in markets today and how RBC Capital Markets is preparing for the new rules.</li></ul> When <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/marc-harris-2652a32/">Marc Harris</a> joined RBC Capital Markets' team research in 2004, it was a small player on Wall Street with only a few of its analysts being recognized as stars.This year, with Harris in charge of research for RBC, and his team cracked the top 10 of <a href="https://www.institutionalinvestor.com/research/7401/The-All-America-Research-Team-Rising-Stars">Institutional Investor magazine's annual analyst rankings</a>. Sixteen of its analysts made the list, with the firm in the top five across 13 different sectors.Business Insider recently caught up with Harris at RBC's Wall Street headquarters to discuss how he's built the research team, the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/ubs-wall-street-unprepared-for-the-magnitude-of-mifid-impact-2017-10">sweeping changes about to affect equity research around the world</a>, and how he views markets today. This interview has been lightly edited for clarity and length. Graham Rapier: How did you manage to grow RBC's research division into what it is today?Marc Harris: Over the course of the past decade, we've transitioned from a boutique, middle-market-oriented product that had a lot of fans - a lot of good, individual analysts, into a true top-10 platform. The way we did that was not by going out as a mercenary and saying we're going to be the highest bidder in the market for the No. 1-, 2-, 3-ranked analysts and just basically add them year after year.More than half our analysts in the top-ranked categories are organically grown people, people who we brought up inside the organization. That was intentional. There are also sectors where we need to be there yesterday, so sometimes I have to make a choice.Rapier: Can you give an example?Harris: One is biotechnology. It's an incredibly important area, and we have a major franchise there. We had someone I had grown from an associate into a senior analyst [Mike Yee]. He had gone, over the course of a six-year period, from being an unranked analyst to literally being the No. 1 guy in the space. He was at the firm for over a dozen years, but he recently left. He ended up getting bid away and went over to another firm - a loss for us.While I would love to start that over again from scratch, it's too important a space with too much going on. We have three dedicated analysts in this space. We can't be there without a substantive, known quantity, so I went out and hired people to backfill there.There are other spots where I'm willing to do the three- or four-year view of taking one of our great up-and-coming associates, or an analyst who's covering part of a sector and promote them into a lead role. A good example of that is media, where I took Steve Cahill - who was an associate on the aerospace and defense team - and when our media analyst ended up leaving, I said this is a space where I know I have A-plus talent with the time to develop that over a few years, so we made that investment and put him in there.In his first full year this year, he's already broken into the top 10 of II, and my bet is he will continue to go higher from there. We do much more of the latter than the former because we've tried to build this thoughtfully, gradually, and sustainably.I won't name specific competitors, but I could show you companies where every third year they go through a massive hiring streak, pay peak of market for all of their talent on one- or two-year contracts, then drop like a stone, and they have to start all over again. I knew when we were building this that the only way to make it sustainable was to build from the bottom, make a culture where people want to be here and not just for the salary.Rapier: Are there any other sectors you're expanding into now?Harris: There's no industry that's not going to be affected by big data, and all the derivatives of that.Frankly, if you were looking for something that ties all this together, believe it or not, the backdrop of all of this - one of the defining factors of success or failure - is going to be the ability of every business we analyze, and in our own business, to take big data in all of its various forms and create true information out of it. That's literally everyone.For consumer companies, it's how do we micro-target consumers and which companies are well prepared to do that. If you're talking about healthcare IT, it's going to be understanding the massive amount of information coming out of the healthcare industry, analyzing it person by person, doing population health analysis, and things like that.For biotechnology, it's going to be, "Can we use artificial intelligence to start to create jobs?" <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/googles-venture-capital-arm-invests-in-oxford-biotech-startup-spybiotech-2017-3">Google recently launched an effort to basically run through protein folding and use big data</a> to analyze the conclusions out of that, and in essence make themselves into a biotechnology company. That means new competition for biotechnology that they never expected.This is like the merger of every industry into a tech-led, big-data industry. The way I think about our investments, where we need to be, where the opportunity is, a lot of it comes from thinking about where technology and the acceleration of that technology going to a variety of industries.Rapier: Let's talk about the new MiFID [markets in financial instruments directive] regulations. How will those affect RBC's business?Harris: The sustainability I mentioned earlier will be incredibly important as we go into this new and uncharted environment of content unbundled from the execution at varying degrees. When you take a product that's never been priced in the market before, and you all of a sudden decide to start pricing it, the only way to be in there is to know you have top-tier talent to start with, and then work backward.The largest asset managers will most likely make the choice to start paying in cash [for research] and will basically try to force the sell-side to accept the payment in cash. What that means is that we will all have to figure out a structure that works.Everybody is going to reorganize their research departments under something that is a registered investment adviser structure. In essence, it means analysts will be dually registered doing half what they have been doing, and the other half doing the advisership thing.It's a major change, with substantial reorganization to be done for any firm that wants to accept these cash payments. It's really just a question of will enough asset managers start paying in cash, forcing everybody to make the choice.A lot of our competitors have already made the decision to reorganize as an RIA, and almost everybody is considering it right now. [Editor's note: So far, only <a href="https://www.ft.com/content/28198e9a-8ff5-365d-8aa0-120b4015da27">Bank of America Merrill Lynch has publicly applied to register</a> as such.] It's the hot topic of discussion in every major sell-side investment bank right now.Rapier: You sound optimistic.Harris: I am.There are a couple of things that are clear. One is that mediocrity in research simply will not have any value. You cannot just be a sort of down in the middle, 15- to 20-ranked firm, producing OK research with OK analysts doing OK work. There was a long period of time where that kind of firm, with enough other peripheral business around them, could survive. Today, that simply will not get paid for in any geography, period. If you're one of those firms, you've got a problem.There may be consolidation in the research industry, but if you've got the scale and size, with the right people providing that content, you end up in a pretty good position. You'll have to ride through the volatility of a storm, but if you can, you'll end up in a pretty good spot that serves a lot of different consumers.There are two things driving this. This new set of regulations have sparked this fire, but the reason its spread as rapidly as it has is pretty simple: performance. Quite frankly, performance is also what's going to solve it at the tail end. If active managers are able to outperform passive alternatives, then we won't be having a discussion about the death of sell-side research. The reason this is topic du jour is, for several years, active managers have not been able to outperform passive alternatives.With the added pressure of regulation, what are you going to do? You're going to cut costs.Rapier: Where are we in the business cycle? Is there still room for the bull market to run?Harris: Anybody who thinks that volatility in equity markets is dead has not lived long enough. Volatility will return. Nobody can ever define exactly when it's going to come back, but it will. Whether that's going to be caused by some external event - a war, another type of black swan that causes panic - really hard to say. People have been focused lately on the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/1987-black-monday-stock-market-crash-most-important-lesson-2017-10">Black Monday crash</a> and there have been lots of musings about what caused it.The reality is, nobody can define why the Dow dropped 22% that day. In all the books that have been written, with all the historical analyses, there's nobody who can look at that and say, "The reason why that happened was 'blank.'" It's always a group of factors coming together.I do think volatility will be there, but I also think that those crashes are always good refresh opportunities for the market and particular companies. We need those. It's healthy for the market to have those resets. If we don't have any fear in the market, obviously we've got a problem, especially in equities, which are driven by fear or the lack thereof.One of the things that could begin to hit the reset on that is when we start to enter a more full-blown Fed cycle. That will begin to sort of pull this back. When people don't have alternatives for returns, equity markets will tend to get a little bit over-inflated perhaps. That's more of a reset to the norm than something where you look and say the earnings today can't justify the current levels.The reality is, earnings today are in many ways justifying where we are in this process. It's a healthy economy. It's a healthy market. Don't discount the fact that we will get some form of tax reform through. It may not be exactly what's on paper right now, but any incremental amount - I won't opine on whether it will actually help the true economy - but I do know that when earnings go up, companies are considered to be more valuable and more flows down to the bottom line.There are more positive things putting the wind at our backs still right now than there are negatives. <div class="margin-top"> <h3>NOW WATCH: <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/mongodb-ceo-dev-ittycheria-ipo-2017-10">MongoDB soars 33% on its first day of trading - the CEO explains how they plan to beat Oracle and Amazon</a></h3> <div> </div> </div>

We talked to the head of research at RBC Capital Markets about the storm headed for Wall Street

West Texas Intermediate crude futures in New York jumped 6% to as high as $39.84 per barrel, following an unexpected drop in inventories last week. First, the scoreboard:<ul><li>Dow: 17,565.18, +23.22, (0.13%)</li><li>S&amp;P 500: 2,046.11, +4.20, (0.21%)</li><li>Nasdaq: 4,847.34, -1.03, (-0.02%)</li><li>WTI crude oil: $39.72, +$2.46, +6.60%</li></ul><h2>Flat Q1 growth?</h2>It's looking more and more like <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/q1-gdp-estimates-cut-2016-4">economic growth was almost flat</a> in the first quarter. The Commerce Department published February wholesale inventories and a revision to January. It said inventories fell by a more-than-expected 0.5% in February, and January's print was revised sharply lower to -0.2% from 0.3%.These numbers had economists everywhere cutting their estimates for first-quarter growth. Deutsche Bank chief economist Peter Hooper explained in a recent note that the ratio of private inventories to final sales surged late last year to a six-year high. But if this ratio drops without a meaningful rise in final sales, it could be a big drag that removes as much as one percentage point from GDP growth, he said. Most prominently, the Atlanta Fed's GDPNow tracker cut its forecast to 0.1% from 0.4%.Now, there are many reasons to pay attention to this tracker, including the fact that it was virtually the only one to nail the print for Q1 2015. So here we are again.<div class="KonaFilter image-container display-table"><div><div class="image"><a href="https://www.frbatlanta.org/cqer/research/gdpnow.aspx?panel=1">Atlanta Fed</a></div></div></div>JP Morgan economist Daniel Silver lowered his estimate for Q1 GDP to 0.2%, with inventories expected to subtract 0.6 percentage points from growth. Also, Barclays lowered its forecast to 0.3% from 0.4%, and Goldman cut its estimate to 0.9% from 1.2%. Now before the doomsayers get all excited, we'd caution that the advance GDP print (due April 28) will be revised three times within one month. The advance estimate of Q4 GDP was 0.7% in January. The final print in March was 1.4%.So stay tuned. <h2>Marriott/Starwood</h2>Marriott International and Starwood Hotels shareholders have said "yes" to each other. They voted in favor of their merger that would create the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/marriott-and-starwood-shareholder-vote-2016-4">world's largest hotel chain</a>. Marriott is paying $12.4 billion to buy Starwood. Shareholders will get 0.8 shares of Marriott common stock and $21.00 in cash.Their union was almost interrupted by the Chinese insurance giant Anbang, who tried to outbid Marriott for Starwood.Starwood CEO Thomas Mangas said in a press release: "Today's vote is a significant step toward closing, and we are grateful for the continued enthusiasm and support for this merger.
