<br />And, it’s not just for Instagram but for Instagram TV (IGTV) as well, according to the posts. <br /><br />The development isn’t all that surprising since Facebook and WhatsApp — all under Facebook’s umbrella — already support multiple Indian languages. Not to mention that India is home to Instagram’s <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/578364/countries-with-most-instagram-users/">second largest</a> user base, after the United States. <br /><br />It’s unclear if the roll out will happen on Android or iOS. As of now, instances of Instagram in Hindi have only been spotted on <a href="https://www.apkmirror.com/apk/instagram/instagram-instagram/instagram-instagram-72-0-0-0-32-130595-release/">the ‘alpha’ version</a> of the app and phones that are running Android Oreo.<br /><br />It also remains to be seen how Instagram users’ feed in India will adjust to the new changes. Facebook’s algorithm, for example, already pulls in local content onto its feed.<br /><br /><strong>Localised competition<br /></strong><br />Instagram’s new Hindi initiative, along with the Instagram Lite app, may make for a threatening combination against India’s local ShareChat platform, which has been booming because of accessibility in local Indian languages. <br /><br />Meanwhile, Instagram’s main competitor, Snapchat, recently <a href="https://thenextweb.com/in/2018/10/05/snapchat-appoints-india-executive/">appointed</a> their first executive in India to capitalise on the growing user base in the country. Even Amazon <a href="https://economictimes.indiatimes.com/small-biz/startups/newsbuzz/amazon-india-launches-hindi-app-website-to-address-additional-100-mn-customers/videoshow/65690683.cms">launched</a> their Hindi portal in September, ahead of the festive seasons to increase their user base. <br /><br />The trend of localisation is emerging in India for two main reasons: the number of Hindi users is expected to <a href="https://assets.kpmg.com/content/dam/kpmg/in/pdf/2017/04/Indian-languages-Defining-Indias-Internet.pdf">surpass</a> the number of English internet users in India by 2021, according to the KPMG report; India is also where the ‘<a href="https://www.blog.google/technology/next-billion-users/">next billion users</a>’ will reside as per Google’s strategy.<br /><br />The added support for Indian languages, or Hindi specifically, isn’t only about reaching people who can’t communicate in English but about reaching the most remote parts of the country where the advent of Internet penetration has brought in greater accessibility to online services. <br />

Instagram may be introducing an Hindi user interface for Indian users in big localisation move

Meta-owned <keyword id="819905" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="instagram" source="Orion">Instagram</keyword> has brought its new test for users to verify their age via an original ID or video selfie to India, amid growing worries that kids are using fake dates of birth to create profiles on social media platforms.<br /><br />If someone attempts to edit their date of birth on Instagram from under the age of 18 to 18, or over, in India, the company will now require them to verify their age using one of two options: upload their ID or record a video selfie.<br /><br />"We're testing this so we can make sure teens and adults are in the right experience for their age group. Testing began in June this year in the US, and now it's expanding to India and Brazil," the company said.<br /><br />The company plans to expand the test to the UK and the EU before the end of the year.<br /><br />"We're also removing Social Vouching as an option to verify age from the test to make some improvements," Instagram added.<br /><br />The Social Vouching option allowed users to ask mutual followers to confirm how old they were. The three people they selected to vouch for them received a request to confirm their age and needed to respond within three days.<br /><br />Now, those part of the test can choose to upload a video selfie to verify their age in India.<br /><br />"If you choose this option, you'll see instructions on your screen to guide you. After you take a video selfie, we share the image with Yoti, and nothing else. Yoti's technology estimates your age based on your facial features and shares that estimate with us," according to Instagram.<br /><br />Yoti is a company that offers privacy-preserving ways to verify age.<br /><br />"Meta and Yoti then delete the image. Soon, you won't be able to fake your age on Instagram

New Delhi, <keyword id="819905" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Instagram">Instagram</keyword> on Wednesday said it is testing a new "Lite" version of the <keyword id="235499" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="APP">app</keyword> for Android users in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> before a global roll out.<br /><br />Making the announcement at the first "Facebook Fuel For India" virtual event, the photo-sharing app also introduced the second edition of the "Born on Instagram" creator program.<br /><br />"India is such an important country for us and has been a testing ground for innovation, thanks to the natural creativity and entrepreneurial spirit we see here," said Vishal Shah, Vice President of Product, Instagram at Facebook.<br /><br />"With the test of <keyword id="6662415" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="instagram-lite">Instagram Lite</keyword>, and the next edition of 'Born on Instagram', we're aiming to democratise expression and creativity for a greater number of people in India. We're also hoping to gain valuable insights before a global rollout of Instagram Lite."<br /><br />This is not the first time Instagram is testing a feature in India before a global roll out. Instagram is testing a 'Lite' version in India— app will be less than 2 MB in size

<keyword id="819905" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Instagram">Instagram</keyword> has emerged as the most preferred social media platform among the Indian youth while YouTube garnered most attention amid pandemic, with 98 per cent of those surveyed installed it in their phones followed by <keyword id="128682" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Netflix">Netflix</keyword> and <keyword id="758541" type="ORGANIZATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Amazon-Prime">Amazon Prime</keyword>, a new report said on Friday.<br /><br />Although the survey size was small (1154 respondents), the report by Youth Online Learning Organization (YOLO) said that nearly 80 per cent of the respondents were consuming social media when online.<br /><br />While 70 per cent opted for Instagram, 20 per cent reported <keyword id="6354576" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="facebook">Facebook</keyword> as their first choice. <br /><br />It further brought forward the concerns and challenges of using the Internet which included lack of awareness about the healthy and responsible consumption of the internet.<br /><br />Nearly 30 per cent of those surveyed accepted to have shared <keyword id="128617" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="sensitive-information">sensitive information</keyword> on the Internet.<br /><br />"The majority of the respondents were non-adult users and had their own smartphones to surf through the net. This shows the power of the internet and its medium and how it can initiate ripples of change if used wisely while targeting the right audience," said Prem Prakash, Co-founder, YOLO.<br /><br />"It is high time for OTT platforms to start using their platform for a good cause and work towards creating a social change via their content".<br /><br />The survey conducted by YOLO along with IGPP (Institute for Governance, Policies &amp; Politics) and Social Media Matters (SMM) found that 75 per cent of the respondents use the Internet for their academic activity, followed by entertainment through video streaming and OTTs. <br /><br />"We request the social media and OTT platforms to pay heed to what floats on their portal because it could lead to an impact, positive or negative, that solely depends on their content," said Vikram Singh, Co-Founder, Social Media Matters.<br /><br />The study found that there is a need to promote awareness and capacity development programmes among youth to promote awareness about safe and healthy Internet usage.<br /><br />"Almost 85 per cent non-adult users have their own phones. More than 49 per cent user spent around 5 hours a day and around 30 per cent used it for more than 6 hours a day. Instagram most preferred platform among Indian youth — nearly 30% share sensitive information online

Facebook-owned photo-sharing platform <keyword id="819905" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Instagram">Instagram</keyword> on Wednesday announced that its users in <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword> will now be able to view the <keyword id="4114693" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="reels">Reels</keyword> within the <keyword id="6662415" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="instagram-lite">Instagram Lite</keyword> app.<br /><br />"Now with this update, everyone using the Instagram Lite app in India will be able to view Reels with the Reels tab. Instagram users in India will now be able to view Reels within Instagram Lite app

<br /><ul><li>Instagram is looking to standardize its regulations in terms of banning users from its photo-sharing platform.</li><li>The number of violations that each user is allowed will no longer depend on the frequency of their posts. </li><li>This may catch a few extremist accounts — but is hardly effective to counter trolls.</li><li>There’s a chance that such regulations may even backfire.</li></ul>Social networks across the board are increasing their vigilance around what gets shared on their platform. Facebook-owned Instagram, for example, just <a href="https://www.cnet.com/news/instagram-might-change-its-rules-around-banning-accounts/">announced</a> that it’s working on new guidelines for removing accounts from its network. <br /><br />It may be a step in the right direction. But, there’s little evidence that it will be able to effectively combat trolling, the social media equivalent of <a href="https://foreignpolicy.com/2017/04/13/nato-cyber-information-warfare-battle-of-ideas-memes-internet-culture/">guerrilla warfare</a>. .<br /><br />

<br />Normally, after one or two warnings, the user is locked out of Instagram for 24 hours, and then the ban is auto lifted. <br /><br />It is possible for repeat offenders to remain on the platform. Being blocked from the platform temporary counts as one violation. <br /><br />Until now, the number of violations that could get a user kicked off Instagram for good, depended on how frequently a user posts on the platform. <br /><br />But, with the new policy, every user will be held to the same standard — adhering to the same number of violations.<br /><br /><strong>Not fool-proof<br /></strong><br />First off, Instagram isn’t disclosing how many violations across how long a time period can get a user banned permanently. The company says that it doesn’t want users with wrong intentions taking advantage of the rules.<br /><br />And, while the new rules may be able to catch a few extremist accounts in the act — like <a href="https://www.npr.org/2019/05/03/719897171/facebook-bans-several-controversial-users-from-its-platform">conspiracy theorist</a>, Alex Jones, and right-wing extremist accounts of Milo Yiannopoulos and Laura Loomer — it hardly seems to be a fool-proof method to catch haters and trolls who lurk in the shadows. <br /><br />Multiple users have <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2018/10/instagram-has-massive-harassment-problem/572890/">gone on record</a> to say that removing or banning trolls only means that a new account will find its way into the newsfeed within a couple of days, if not hours. This is despite <a href="https://whnt.com/2018/08/28/instagram-combats-misinformation-and-trolls-with-three-new-features/">introducing</a> new features to combat the problem.<br /><br />Even the guy who helped take the first picture of the black hole isn’t spared, according to <a href="https://www.theverge.com/2019/4/13/18308652/katie-bouman-black-hole-science-internet">The Verge</a> — that’s just how troll farms work. And, they’re a powerful tool for <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/dec/18/the-guardian-view-on-instagrams-troll-farms-meme-warfare">political manipulation</a> as demonstrated by Russian trolls during US Presidential Elections in 2016.<br /><br /><strong>Advantage Trolls<br /></strong><br />The new regulations could, in fact, work in the favour of trolls who want a particular user off the platform. They could file multiple abuse reports on a user. Since Instagram <a href="https://www.templatemonster.com/blog/got-banned-by-instagram-what-to-do/">doesn’t</a> issue a warning before blocking an account and neither does it explain why an account was blocked to begin with — well-meaning users could be locked out for good with no recourse.<br /><br />When it comes to restricting extremist accounts, the <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/red-alert-politics/banning-fringe-voices-from-social-media-only-makes-them-more-dangerous">Washington Examiner</a> claims that taking away the user’s social outlet only makes them even more dangerous. <br /><br />“Bad ideas are legitimized when they’re suppressed. To defeat bad ideas, we must actually engage our ideological opponents,” the article said.<br /><br /><br /><br />

Instagram's new rules to ban trolls have the same old problem

<br /><ul><li>Instagram and Facebook Messenger, both under the umbrella of Facebook, seem to be glitching for users worldwide.</li><li>Facebook Messenger users report that new messages aren’t coming in and Instagram users are reporting similar issues with direct messages.</li><li>Complaints against both platforms seem to have started at around 3:00 pm Indian Standard Time (IST).</li></ul>In what seems to be a cross-platform issue, both Facebook Messenger and Instagram users are reporting glitches with their apps. Instagram and Facebook Messenger down for users across the globe

<ul><li><keyword id="819905" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Instagram">Instagram</keyword> has been glitching for users in India and other parts of the world for nearly three days now.</li><li>A Facebook spokesperson told Business Insider that the company is aware of the issue and working on getting thing back to normal as quickly as possible.</li><li>Users are reporting that their timelines aren’t refreshing or, in some cases, not loading at all.</li><li>Downdetector shows that the complaints started coming in yesterday morning and peaked at around 10:00 pm last night. </li><li>However, the issue is yet to be resolved.</li></ul>Instagram has been down for over three days now. Complaints started trickling in on November 10 of timelines not showing new posts. <br /><ul><li>India’s Supreme Court has given the government until January 15 to lay out the rules and regulations for social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. <br /></li><li>The Supreme Court has also pulled in petitions related to social networks that were pending with various high courts.<br /></li><li>It has promised to resolve the pending cases by the end of January.<br /></li></ul>Hate speech and fake news are extremely common across social media in India. To deal with this menace, Indian Supreme Court has asked the government to come out with new rules and regulations by 15 January 2020.<br /><br />The bench, headed by Justices Deepak Gupta and Aniruddha Bose, also directed all pending cases pertaining to social media filed with various high courts to be transferred to the Supreme Court.<br /><br />There are four petitions in the fray. Two filed with the Madras High Court, one with the Madhya Pradesh High Court and another with the Bombay High Court.<br /><br />The primary issue at the helm was the linking of Aadhaar cards with social networks and WhatsApp-- which is pending with the Madras High Court.<br /><br />The petition filed by Facebook argues that disclosure of Aadhaar details will infringe user privacy.<br /><br />The bench also clarified that India’s Information Technology Act allows the government to ask for decryption of data. At the same time, it does not allow the government to force intermediaries to decrypt the data.<br /><br />It added that while national interest is important, it must be balanced against privacy. <br />

New Delhi, Facebook-owned photo-sharing <keyword id="49973" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="platform">platform</keyword> <keyword id="819905" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Instagram">Instagram</keyword> on Monday launched a "Parents Guide" to help <keyword id="91443" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="young-people">young people</keyword> be safe on the platform.<br /><br />The guide is aimed at helping young people to be safe, by informing parents about all the <keyword id="471933" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="safety-features">safety features</keyword> that exist on the platform.<br /><br />"As the Internet permeates into our lives, especially the lives of young people, parents want to be adequately equipped with the evolving digital landscape," Tara Bedi, Public Policy and Community Outreach Manager for Instagram, <keyword id="3658" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="India">India</keyword>, said in a statement.<br /><br />"They want to understand how a platform works and feel comfortable with their children leveraging its opportunities for creative expression while knowing the safety tools available to them that enable that expression in a supportive environment," Bedi added.<br /><br /> <br /><br />The guide is a resource from Instagram, available across many countries, to provide parents with a better understanding of the changing digital landscape. <br /><br />It acts as a conversation starter with their children, as it provides information about tools that exist to keep their child safe on Instagram, the company said, ahead of "Safer Internet Day", which is observed on February 9.<br /><br />The 2021 version of the guide has inputs from key organisations working actively on the rights and safety of children -- Center for Social Research, <keyword id="2041413" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Cyber-Peace-Foundation">Cyber Peace Foundation</keyword>, Aarambh India Initiative, Young Leaders for Activity Citizenship, It's Ok To Talk and Suicide Prevention India Foundation. <br /><br /> <br /><br />The guide takes into account all the new updates on Instagram, such as 'DM reachability controls', which gives creator and business accounts the control to choose who can message them on Instagram and who can add them to groups on 'Instagram Direct'. <br /><br />Another example is 'Bulk comment management', which gives people the option to delete comments in bulk, as well as block or restrict multiple accounts that post negative comments.
