In an industry where gods change every Friday and new stars are born by merely signing on the dotted line, a visionary is born rather rarely. Because, the competition in mediocrity is so high that someone with an eye on the ‘larger picture’ has all chances of being shooed away like a beggar. Then, the search begins for alternate pastures. 
 When Baahubai – the beginning happened, <keyword id="143" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Bollywood">bollywood</keyword> stood at the enormity of human imagination and execution that simply catapulted its creator and <keyword id="251517" type="POSITION" weightage="20" keywordseo="Director-SS-Rajamouli">director SS Rajamouli</keyword> from the seat of a director to an ‘auteur’ in the making. Is he there yet? Well, tracking his footsteps and an unassuming persona, it is highly possible that the new god will soon descend on his throne. 
 <keyword id="6354370" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="20" keywordseo="baahubali">Baahubali</keyword> – the conclusion, the second part of the film is what might possibly open the door to that highly secure room of cinematic auteurs, which only a selected few have been able to climb. The high house is for him to scale, and rescue the prowess of his imagination now. That’s as close as being an auteur is, for Rajamouli – a man from the hinterlands of <a href="http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/home/sunday-times/We-havent-explored-Hindi-market-enough-Bahubali-director-SS-Rajamouli/articleshow/48128185.cms">south Indian film industry</a> who has dominated the bollywood-led Indian cinema for now, but has also managed to have Hollywood sit up and take notice of the possibilities of an Indian mind at work. 
 He is what Indian film industry was able to churn out, among a lot others, all through its century long journey. Is there more excitement in the offing with Rajamouli making it to the list of auteur directors of the century and sharing a seat alongside <keyword id="541815" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Ingmar-Bergman">Ingmar Bergman</keyword>, Jean Renoir, or the more recent <keyword id="66615" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Steven-Spielberg">Steven Spielberg</keyword>, or <keyword id="47027" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="James-Cameron">James Cameron</keyword> or <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Spoiler-Alert-Is-Interstellar-Meant-To-Filter-Blockbuster-Fans-Nolan-Worshippers-And-Cinema-Lovers/articleshow_wf/45119282.cms">Christopher Nolan of the interstellar fame</a>? Well, that’s a million dollar question that awaits the answers with Rajamouli’s next epic film—‘Baahubali the conclusion’. 
 
Because an auteur is the one who holds his cards close to the chest and will plant a seed of hope with his every creation of what is in the offing. 
Needless to say, Rajamouli has played his cards extremely well. Even as the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Baahubali-the-costliest-film-of-Indian-cinema/articleshow/47513630.cms">film began to make waves</a>, Rajamouli was speaking about his next one, which would follow this one in scale, imagination and visual extravaganza. All qualities of an auteur in the making, which will become evident in the days to come. 
 
Theory per se suggests an auteur is a director whose films will bear his signature. Just as a musician bears his signature on his tunes, a painter on his creations – likewise a director has a surefire stamp of his own making on the canvas he has been able to create with his imagination and execution of the concept that possibly haunted him even in his dreams. Signature, like we mentioned earlier, would be the <a href="http://thewire.in/2015/07/14/indias-newest-superstar-is-a-middle-aged-film-director-6437/">director using the commercial apparatus of his films</a> or film-making process just the way a writer would do with his writings or a painter does with his creations. 
 
Though with a writer it is a one-man work with inspiration flowing from the society or his own thoughts; and a painter’s is that of a colour and his paint brush, a director has a lot more going for him with the team work. That unique challenge in film-making makes it even more delectable when the success comes through, and his film is appreciated for ‘his’ or ‘her’ stamp on it. And this could be a recurring theme flowing through all the creations. 
 
It is a medium of personal artistic journey and expression of the director alone. According to film theoretician Andre Bazin, being an auteur was a way of choosing the personal factor in artistic creation as a standard of reference that keeps progressing in a continuum through further works. 
 
This theory is highly useful when analyzing the works of stars who operate with the conditions of a ‘star system’. Best example would be Star wars series, or comparing a canon of films with Terminator 3 with Arnold Schwarzenegger’s movies that he had acted in, prior to that. 
 World’s first auteur perhaps was <keyword id="124415" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Alfred-Hitchcock">Alfred Hitchcock</keyword> where he briefly made a cameo appearance in all of them, in some form or the other. That was just a small part of his signature, apart from the films themselves. Set aside his cameo appearance, Hitchcock’s movies such as Psycho, Vertigo, The birds and the rear window all bore his unique story telling style that was well evolved. 
 
Hence, being an auteur is some sort of a game a director engages the audience and spectators in. This set them waiting for the next offing. 
Indian cinema has clearly moved beyond its conventional scale and production. Today, with the release of Baahubali, the world seems to be the <a href="http://www.businessinsider.in/Top-5-Hollywood-flicks-Baahubali-can-look-up-to/articleshow/48057033.cms">oyster for the auteur</a> in the making.

The veteran actor will be the first Indian cinema personality to be bestowed with the <keyword id="10900413" type="COMPANY" weightage="20" keywordseo="fiaf-award">FIAF Award</keyword> for his dedication and contribution to the preservation of the world's <keyword id="2739550" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Film-heritage">film heritage</keyword>. <keyword id="2370" type="LOCATION" weightage="20" keywordseo="hollywood">Hollywood</keyword> filmmakers and previous recipients of the FIAF Award -- Martin Scorcese and <keyword id="127480" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Christopher-Nolan">Christopher Nolan</keyword> -- will present the award to Bachchan during a virtual showcase scheduled to take place on March 19. The FIAF is a worldwide organisation, comprising of film archives and museums from across the world. "This year FIAF celebrates the twentieth anniversary of its annual Award. To mark this momentous occasion, there could be no better recipient than one of the world's greatest movie stars, and one who has understood, embraced, and publicised the cause of film preservation for years," Frederic Maire, President of FIAF, said in a statement. Bachchan's name was nominated by the FIAF affiliate Film Heritage Foundation. Founded by filmmaker and archivist <keyword id="1063650" type="PERSON" weightage="20" keywordseo="Shivendra-Singh-Dungarpur">Shivendra Singh Dungarpur</keyword>, Film Heritage Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the preservation, restoration, documentation, exhibition, and study of India's film heritage. Bachchan said he is honoured to receive the award for a cause he is "deeply committed". "It was when I became the ambassador of Film Heritage Foundation in 2015, that I realised the extent of the neglect and colossal loss of our precious film heritage and how we continue to lose more of our legacy every day. "Recognising the urgency of the situation, I have been working closely with Film Heritage Foundation since its inception to do everything in our power to save our films and to build a movement for film preservation in our part of the world," the 78-year-old actor. Bachchan stressed that it is important that the idea of film archiving is strengthening and promoted in India. "I do hope that we are able to garner further support for this most essential cause from my colleagues in the film industry and the government, to enable us to realise our dream for building a centre that will preserve and showcase our magnificent film heritage," he added. Nolan, who has been a vocal advocate of celluloid films, said it is imperative that representatives of the film industry around the world come together to ensure the preservation of film heritage. "I want to congratulate Amitabh Bachchan on receiving the 2021 honour. As the ambassador for Film Heritage Foundation, he has played an essential role in putting the cause of film preservation on the map in India and the subcontinent," he added. Dungarpur said India's record in film preservation has been dismal as the country lost almost 70 per cent of its films. "This has been a cause that has been much neglected in our part of the world, and we have been fortunate enough to enjoy the unstinting support of our ambassador, Amitabh Bachchan, who has championed the cause of saving our film heritage and constructively wielded his influence to amplify the cause on a war footing in our part of the world. "This is the reason we nominated him for the award, and he was unanimously voted by all FIAF members to be given the award," he said. Almost 50 years later, these same questions have been offered up again with a slick contemporary polish in a new limited HBO series starring Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac. A couple - this time Mira (Chastain), a wealthy tech executive, and Jonathan (Isaac), an earnest university professor - is once again at the center of the story. But their lives have been transported from Bergman's Sweden to present-day America by director and co-writer Hagai Levi.Mira and Jonathan are married, and on the surface, their lives - in the crude neoliberal sense - seem perfect. They both have Ivy League degrees, prestigious, white-collar careers, and, quite important to the show's narrative, they're both very attractive. But across five long, dialogue-heavy episodes, almost all of which take place within the couple's handsome suburban home, we watch their relationship fall in some of the most dramatic and inhumane circumstances one could be subjected to. <h2>What's Hot: Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac make a perfect unhappy couple</h2>Like virtually all of Bergman's TV work at the end of his career, "Scenes From a Marriage" was chopped up into a feature film to be released internationally.The film picked up the best foreign-language film award at the Golden Globes and was famously held responsible for inspiring a significant hike in the national divorce rate in Sweden. Reports from the time show that the <a href="https://www.ingmarbergman.se/en/production/scenes-marriage">waiting list for marriage guidance services shot up from three weeks to three months</a> in Stockholm. Bergman was even forced to remove his contact details from the national directory due to calls from strangers wanting to discuss their marriage with him. Levi's <keyword id="12074184" type="UNKNOWN" weightage="60" keywordseo="remake" source="Orion">remake</keyword> inspires similar intense emotions from the viewer, and it's almost entirely thanks to the performances of Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac.The pair are perfectly matched on paper, and here they dig into the best parts of all their previous performances: Isaac is brooding and intellectual (as best seen in "Inside Llewyn Davis") and <a href="https://www.insider.com/jessica-chastain-transformation-tammy-faye-bakker-makeup-skin-damage-makeup-2021-8">Chastain is forceful and insatiable </a>(as seen in myriad blockbusters such as "Zero Dark Thirty").But the two are just as entertaining, and perhaps more effective, when they are forced out of these familiar modes. As the series begins, for instance, the two are interviewed about their lives by a plucky graduate student for a gender studies project (a clever and economical way to set the scene). Jonathan takes great pleasure in divulging the exciting origins of their relationship while Mira, not completely unengaged but somewhat emotionally removed, sidesteps questions and forgoes details.Instantly we know something about this relationship isn't right and which direction to look to for answers. Furthermore, Chastain and Isaac's chemistry - which was recently <a href="https://www.insider.com/jessica-chastain-reacts-oscar-isaac-viral-red-carpet-video-2021-9">advertised on the red carpet at the Venice Film Festival</a> where the show premiered - is palpable. The charge between them oozes off the screen. <h2>What's not: Gender-swapping isn't progressive when it vilifies women</h2>All the chemistry in the world can't erase the biggest flaw in "Scenes From a Marriage."Mira is set up to be a <a href="https://www.insider.com/jessica-chastain-says-portrayal-of-women-disturbing-cannes-2017-5">villain from the very first episode</a>. As the couple is sitting on their couch suffering through the awkward interview about the intimacies of their marriage, we feel Mira's sense of pride at being the breadwinner in her family. By the time she's physically abusing Jonathan because she doesn't want to sign divorce papers to end the marriage she imploded with an affair, we've had enough. In a monogamous marriage, like the one Mira and Jonathan are shown to have, cheating because you are unhappy is betrayal, plain and simple. "Scenes From a Marriage" doesn't do much to imply anything else.But then, what's the point of swapping gender roles assigned in the 1973 original series? We have plenty of female villains in media today, especially in the US. Levi's decision to flip the original series to make the female spouse (Mira) the unfaithful abuser doesn't add anything new to the conversation about marriage or gender roles at all. It's just frustrating to watch unfold for five hours. <div type="image" title="Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain" height="1279" width="1708" msid="86118562" hostid="261"></div>There's also the matter of how "Scenes From a Marriage" handles Mira's abortion.That the series implies Mira's decision to end her pregnancy contributed to the end of her marriage, even though Jonathan appears supportive of that choice, leaves a bad taste in our mouths. It's tough to reconcile the show's insistence that Mira - a woman who takes pride in her career and rather abruptly leaves her husband for a much younger man - would ever yearn for traditional marriage and more children ever again.We aren't watching "Scenes From a Marriage" expecting anything close to a happy ending. But every woman is well within their right to feel outraged by the end of the series.When we meet Mira and Jonathan, her affair is the catalyst for the end of her marriage. Yet, before the final fade-out, we learn something about Jonathan that's equally unsavory - and the show hints at no imminent consequences brewing for him. Why, then, should we be reading Mira as the villain in this story, as the series appears to insist?<div type="image" title="Jessica Chastain" height="1279" width="1708" msid="86118563" hostid="261"></div><h2>Bottom Line: Come for the chemistry, because there's little else worth your time here</h2>Chastain and Isaac give powerful, passionate performances in HBO's "Scenes From a Marriage" remake. They have a rare chemistry that is sometimes strong enough to leave the audience gasping for air.But the update doesn't provide unique or compelling answers to Bergman's original questions. It only leaves us with a new, maddening one: Will Hollywood ever get tired of painting women as the villain? Grade: B

Why are you so fascinated with their lives, and how have you been able to tell their stories in a unique way?Doing the Kennedy book, for example, was interesting because a lot of people who've lived through it, when they read the book they go, "I forgot about a lot of that stuff" or "I never knew it in the first place." And then a lot of people under 40, they don't really know the story, just a little bit.With the Lennon book, I was living on Central Park West when he got shot that night. That night I went and stood outside The Dakota with 100 other people after it was announced that he'd died, so I was there. The next couple of days I was in Central Park, and they had these people mourning and crying and weeping. Somebody was holding up a sign, "Why."A friend of mine, a photographer who'd been involved with the Beatles a lot, took that photograph and I have it in my office now. Then weirdly I'm in Florida and the house that we have is connected by a bridge to the house next door. That house next door was owned by John Lennon and Yoko when he died, and they were redoing it and they plan to basically live.They were bringing up Sean [John Lennon's son], and [how] John had really become much more of a father than he'd ever been in his past and he'd found himself again musically, or so he said he had. Then the love story with Yoko, which at the time a lot of people pissed all over it. But nowadays we would say, "You know what, it was a beautiful love story and God bless him." In those days they didn't want to accept it, they didn't want to accept that John was with Yoko, but they were really in love and that comes out in the book too.I talked to Paul McCartney and it was fascinating. And with McCartney, those two, they vied for who's the leader of the band and that was probably a little bit of what broke up The Beatles initially. I think there was some guilt about that with both of them and in later years they got closer again. Paul still regrets that it dissolved the way it did. If he could have done it over, he would have tried to figure out a way to stay closer because initially after the Beatles broke up they were mean-spirited toward one another for a few years.How do you decide on your approach to writing each book and which collaborators will be the best fit for each genre and audience?Here's what I think about in terms of the audience: I pretend there's one person sitting across from me. I'm telling them a story, I don't want them to get up until I'm finished so it's really important to me in terms of what I do, I don't want to bore them. That was the thing with the Kennedy book. How do you tell this story and just keep it moving along? It's the way I do the Alex Cross books and the kids' books that I do, it's vital that the kids don't get bored. That's a big part of it and probably the most important part of it.With the kids' books I do a lot with Chris Grabenstein. We're good friends, and we both have a good sense of humor, so we click nicely. There's a writer I work with, J.D. Barker, and he's a loose cannon and I'm a sniper, very disciplined and whatever, so it's a nice combo. Nobody leaves and it's a nice environment and there's not a lot of pressure. I had a nice back and forth with President Clinton, it was very comfortable.You've donated to libraries, classrooms, and indie bookstores. Why is childhood education the most important cause that you champion?There are a lot of things we could try to do. I don't know that I can have any effect on global warming, but in terms of education we can actually affect stuff right now. If we taught movies in classrooms and it wouldn't be a bad thing, we could talk about character and plot and how you structure a story, et cetera. But if we start with Ingmar Bergman movies, kids will go, "Oh, I don't like movies."Unfortunately in a lot of schools, we spent so much time on grammar and the rules, and then we give them stories that they don't necessarily relate to and I think it's a mistake. I think we need to give them more stories where they go, "That was a cool story. Let's read another story." We're not preparing everybody for Harvard but what we want them to do is certainly come out of grade school and be competent readers.The percentage of kids' reading at grade level in this country is under 50%. I'm working with the University of Florida - they've been working at a program for five years now - and they have that number up to the mid 80s. We know how to fix this problem and now it's just an issue of getting state governments to go, "Okay, we're going to fix it."We're working with the government in Florida now, because if we can get 70% of the kids in this country reading at grade level, man, that's going to save lives. More kids will wind up going to higher education, at least certainly getting through high school. They'll be better prepared to go into the workforce when the time comes and take care of their families. The first part of it is try to find things that you really like to do: Look for things that you have a passion for, and you've got to work at it.I used to work at a mental hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts. I worked my way through college there, and I worked a lot at night shifts. I wasn't a big reader before that and I just started reading like crazy because a lot of nights there wasn't a whole lot to do, [during] the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift, and then I started scrubbing stories and I loved it. I'd really never thought about being a writer, but I loved doing it, it was that simple.Try to find something you have a passion for or some job where at least part of it fulfills the passion that you have. I love to solve problems or I'm a problem-solver. I'm a people person. Okay, well what are people-person jobs where that skill, that love that you have, that whatever can be used? Patrick Willems is a New York-based director who makes geek humor short films on YouTube. He released his biggest viral week this with "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UngE0qn3VRY">What if Wes Anderson directed X-Men?</a>" which has racked up millions of views and dozens of blog posts.We got in touch to ask how hard it is to make money doing this. First, check out the brilliant video:Willem, a 2010 graduate of Oberlin College, has released around 150 YouTube videos since 2011, also including "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kno3xDw27bY">What if Ingmar Bergman Directed The Flash?</a>" "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmnJGui7bDs">Breaking Bad Jr.</a>," and "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gb66SUINIv4">Beyoncé's new Backup Dancers</a>." The videos are well-made and fun to watch, and a bunch have more than 100,000 views.But is there any money in this passion project? Willem broke down the reality over email:<div dir="ltr">As far as the business side of this goes, I'm not at the point where making YouTube videos is my sole source of income. My "day job" is doing freelance video work, which thankfully allows for a flexible schedule so I usually have plenty of time to devote to making the videos for YouTube.I make some money from ad revenue, but it fluctuates wildly depending on whether I've had any hit videos lately. I don't think I'll ever be at the point where YouTube ad revenue pays my rent every month. The more realistic goal is to make videos that will get noticed by the right people, which will lead to getting hired for directing jobs.Since I started doing this four years ago, there's been a steady increase in the success and attention my videos have received, and obviously "Wes Anderson's X-Men" is by far the most popular thing I've made. Going forward the plan is to keep doing what I'm doing, but trying to get more ambitious, do some larger projects, and keep making things I'm excited about that hopefully connect with people. And, fingers crossed, at some point someone will see one of these and says, "Let's hire those guys to make more stuff like that."</div>Willem isn't actually making any money directly from his viral "X-Men" since it contains a copyright song:There's no pre-roll ad because this video isn't monetized. There's a copyright claim on a song I used in it ("Powerman" by the Kinks), which has caused it to be blocked in most countries outside the U.S. (that's why I put it on Vimeo as well) and doesn't allow me to monetize it. Even though I've used license music in videos before without any companies claiming it, I knew this was a possibility. And in this instance I felt having that song made the video so much stronger that it was worth giving up any money I might make from it.... YouTube actually required me to agree not to disclose my earnings when I joined the Partner Program, but it doesn't matter here because this video isn't generating any revenue at all.
