The Indian cement industry is on track to reach 5.09 billion tonnes by 2028-29, driven by robust government investment in infrastructure. According to an IANS report originally attributed to Infomerics Ratings, this marks a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.9 per cent between 2024 and 2029. In 2022-23, the industry’s market size stood at 3.82 billion tonnes, with a total installed capacity of 622 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) in FY24 and production at 427 million tonnes. Notably, India contributes over 8 per cent to the world’s total installed cement capacity, highlighting its importance in the global market. Despite this, India’s per capita cement consumption is 260 kg—significantly below the global average of 540 kg—indicating substantial room for growth. Globally, the cement market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 4.3 per cent from 2024 to 2032. The sector’s expansion is fuelled by ambitious government initiatives, including an allocation of ₹11.11 lakh crore for infrastructure in FY25 and housing schemes like Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. The construction sector consumes 55 per cent of cement production, while public infrastructure projects account for the remainder. The industry also plays a critical role in employment, providing direct jobs to over one million people and creating downstream opportunities for about 20,000 individuals per million tonnes of cement produced. Private players dominate the sector, controlling 98 per cent of production capacity, while public sector units hold a mere 2 per cent. Domestic production meets almost all demand, with imports accounting for just 0.2 per cent of total production in FY23. However, exports have declined recently due to reduced global demand and rising competition. India currently has 341 cement manufacturing facilities, including 159 integrated large cement plants, 120 grinding units, and 62 mini cement plants. Cement production has seen steady growth, with a 7.1 per cent increase in September 2024 and a cumulative growth of 1.6 per cent between April and September of FY25, according to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. This growth aligns with India’s overall industrial performance, which saw a 2 per cent rise in core industries in September, led by cement, steel, coal, and fertilisers. If implemented, Americans could see prices rise across several product categories.Some companies that produce apparel and auto parts have <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/companies-raising-prices-trump-tariffs-inflation-goods-getting-more-expensive-2024-11">already started preparing to raise prices</a> if Trump enacts his plans, and some trade experts predicted that a range of industries, including electronics and appliances, would see higher prices.Mary Lovely, a senior fellow at the nonpartisan Peterson Institute for International Economics, told Business Insider that Trump could implement his proposed tariff on China imports quickly — within the first half of 2025 — using an authority in the Trade Act, but she said it's a possibility that the president-elect will not follow through on the 60% tariff he proposed on the campaign trail. He also proposed a 10% to 20% tariff on goods imported from other countries."Nothing is taxed at 60% right now, so every sector is vulnerable to seeing higher tariffs," Lovely said, adding that she would expect a lower tariff, like 20% or 25%. There's also the question of how much of the tariff burden will fall on consumers, Lovely said, and a lot of it depends on the mechanisms Trump uses to implement the tariffs.Trump has <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cost-expensive-goods-price-impact-presidential-election-scenarios-trump-harris-2024-10#imported-goods">said</a> that his tariff proposals would not impact consumer prices and would serve as a tax on other countries and boost American manufacturing. The impacts of his previous tariffs were mixed. In 2018, for example, tariffs on washing machines <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2019/04/21/business/trump-tariffs-washing-machines.html">caused</a> prices to rise on laundry items. The smaller 30% to 50% tariffs on imports from China that Trump implemented in his first term were not found to be inflationary, and President Joe Biden kept most of them in place."Consumers are going to be at a burden, but it may take some time for them to feel it, like a slow drip," Lovely said.Still, Jonathan Gold, vice president of supply chain and customs policy at the National Retail Federation, said it's reasonable for both companies and consumers to prepare for higher prices. He told BI that companies are already concerned."Whether it's a finished good or an input to production, anything that gets brought into the country from somewhere else is going to get hit with that tax," Gold said.When asked about tariffs' impacts on inflation, Trump's spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said, "In his first term, President Trump instituted tariffs against China that created jobs, spurred investment, and resulted in no inflation."Based on analyses from economists and trade experts, here are the goods that could become more expensive for Americans under Trump's tariff proposals.<h2 id="6bd7d9e5-1349-490e-afe7-bfcfe6c706de">Apparel and shoes</h2>With Trump's proposals in place, the National Retail Federation <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://cdn.nrf.com/sites/default/files/2024-11/Estimated_Impacts_of_Proposed_Tariffs_on_Imports_11.24_0.pdf">estimated</a> that prices for apparel would increase by 12.5%, prices for footwear would increase by 18.1%, and travel goods — which include backpacks and wallets — would increase by 13%.Retailers that source more than 20% of their goods from China, including Crocs and American Eagle, are at higher risk from Trump's tariff proposals, a Bank of America research note <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/11/06/trump-proposed-tariffs-consumer-prices.html">said</a>. The two companies did not immediately respond to a request for comment from BI on whether they are adjusting their business plans in anticipation of the tariffs.Some retailers have already announced preparations to increase prices should Trump's tariff plans go into effect. Columbia Sportswear CEO Tim Boyle said during an October earnings call that he is "very concerned about the imposition of tariffs." He later <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2024/10/30/companies-tariffs-trump-prices/">told</a> The Washington Post that the company is "set to raise prices" in response to Trump's plans.<h2 id="901a0f6a-c8c4-4040-adc4-f59680460559">Electronics</h2>An October <a target="_blank" href="https://shop.cta.tech/products/how-the-proposed-trump-tariffs-increase-prices-for-consumer-technology-products">report</a> from the Consumer Technology Association estimated that the proposed tariffs would increase laptop and tablet costs by 45%, smartphone costs by 25.8%, video game consoles by 39%, and televisions by 9%.China is a major supplier of electronic products, so everyday products that Americans use — like smartphones and laptops — would likely see price increases. The CTA report said that in 2023, China accounted for 87% of US video game console imports, 78% of smartphone imports, and 79% of laptop and tablet imports.While some companies could try to shift their production out of China, Gold said it's not an easy process."You can't change a supply chain overnight," Gold said. "It takes months, if not years, to be able to find a new vendor that you're comfortable with that can meet all of your different requirements, has the capacity, the skilled workforce, the infrastructure works within the country."<h2 id="4af3509a-5a51-43d4-a381-392f563c0881">Cars</h2>Major car companies import auto parts from China, Mexico, and Europe, and some executives have already warned that the industry would likely face higher prices under Trump's tariffs. Philip Daniele, CEO of auto-parts company AutoZone, said during a September earnings call that if Trump carries out his tariff plans, "we will pass those tariff costs back to the consumer.""We generally raise prices ahead of that," Daniele said, adding that prices would settle over time. "So, that's historically what we've done."Shinji Aoyama, Honda's executive vice president, said on a November earnings call that Trump's proposals will have a "big impact" not just on Honda but on other car companies like General Motors and Ford. Still, he said he thinks it would take some time for the tariffs to be imposed, and at that point, Honda might consider moving production to a country that is not subjected to US tariffs.Lovely said that auto parts are an area where a lot of production is coming from China, so it's "very reasonable" to prepare for price increases. But shifting production would present difficulties because if Trump implements his 10% to 20% universal tariff, "you don't really know if there's any safe place," she said.<h2 id="8651f485-c0c8-4b71-a554-448306a5b630">Furniture</h2>The National Retail Federation report estimated that a 10% universal tariff and a 60% tariff on imports from China would increase furniture costs by 6.4%. Specifically, the report said a $200 crib could end up costing $213 after tariffs, and a $2,000 mattress and box spring could rise to $2,128.The NRF added in its report that the higher costs would hit low-income households the hardest: "They spend twice as much of their after-tax income on furniture as high-income households."Additionally, Henrik Elm, the CFO for Inter Ikea — the group that connects Ikea stores with suppliers — <a target="_blank" href="https://www.reuters.com/business/retail-consumer/ikea-ready-potential-tariffs-under-trump-cfo-says-2024-11-08/">told</a> Reuters that the company is preparing for higher tariffs under Trump, saying that Ikea has worked to make its supply chain more responsive to changes."I think we are better equipped than we have been ever before," Elm said, adding that "of course we are not immune to changes."<h2 id="4b90402b-7b3d-4fb9-b4c4-8ce9e4ee75d4">Appliances</h2>NPR <a target="_blank" href="https://www.npr.org/2019/04/09/711001915/tariffs-complex-ripple-effects-hit-appliance-shoppers-and-makers">reported</a> in 2019 that Americans were seeing higher prices on appliances like washing machines after Trump implemented a 20% tariff on the product. The NRF report said it expects appliance pieces to rise again under Trump's higher tariff proposals with a 19.4% price increase on items including stoves, fridges, dishwashers, and blenders.Under the analysis, the price of a basic fridge would rise from about $650 to $776.Gold said it's unlikely Trump's tariffs would go into effect on day one or day two, and "it's tough to say right now at what point consumers would feel the impact.""It could also depend upon the individual companies and what their tariff mitigation plans are and how much they can try and lessen the impact on the consumers," Gold said. "Obviously, larger companies might have little more ability to do that than small, medium-sized folks who really can't absorb the impact of the tariff and would immediately have to pass on those costs."<h2 id="e555aa7a-b2a3-4f94-b3aa-dae3f12d768a">Groceries</h2>Trump vowed to lower grocery prices for Americans — during a town hall in September, he said he would lower grocery prices by restricting food imports to promote production in the US. However, his tariff plans could increase grocery prices.A <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.thirdway.org/report/what-trumps-tariffs-mean-for-your-trip-to-the-store">report</a> from centrist think tank ThirdWay said that Trump's tariff proposals analyzed eight common purchases that the US either heavily imports or is unable to produce domestically. Using data from the International Trade Commission, the report estimated that coffee costs would rise by $0.23, frozen beef prices would rise by $1.09, and olive oil prices would rise by $0.31.Taylor Rogers, the Republican National Committee spokesperson, previously told BI that "Trump will once again cut taxes and unleash American energy to lower prices on groceries and other goods when we send him back to the White House."

For 10 years, Joe Gallegos Jr. lived the life of an LA actor, driving from audition to audition across the sprawling city in the hopes of landing a role. Things were going well — he'd landed a role in "A Cowgirl's Story," a military drama starring Bailee Madison, the "Dance Moms" star Chloé Lukasiak, and Pat Boone, and he was starting to read for bigger projects.That all changed a few years ago when a film role brought him back to his native New Mexico. He was close to family for the first time in years, and the film industry there was burgeoning. When the movie wrapped, instead of sprinting back to Los Angeles, Gallegos realized he didn't have to go back. The pandemic had shifted from in-person to on-tape. He's since earned acting credits in TV shows like "Pulse," a medical procedural on Netflix; and "Duster," a JJ Abrams drama on HBO Max — both of which filmed in New Mexico. The money he's made from those gigs and a few independent projects made it possible for Gallegos to buy a townhouse in downtown Albuquerque — something he'd never come close to being able to afford in La La Land."It's been a good decision because, as an actor, I can be literally anywhere in the world now," he told me.Lately, creative workers are increasingly chasing their Hollywood dreams in production hubs far from Hollywood. LA continues to hold the lion's share of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hollywood-losing-dominance-tv-movies-employment-chart-2024-10">film and TV jobs</a> in America, but after a long grind of jobs slowly slipping away, the exodus from the city has accelerated in recent years. A recent analysis of Bureau of Labor Statistics figures conducted by Patrick Adler and Taner Osman of Westwood Economics &amp; Planning Associates found that the figure was 22% in August, down from about 33% two years earlier.So what's making actors, executives, and studios look beyond the Hollywood sign? Some factors aren't new. Most notably, states have long used financial incentives to try to lure film investment away from California. But those incentives helped establish an infrastructure across the US — with top-notch sound stages being built in cities as varied as Dallas, Atlanta, and Miami — that was ready and waiting when the pandemic-era rise of remote work gave those seeking a lower cost of living a real choice in deciding where to live. Add it all up, and it seems that the glitz and glam of Hollywood is struggling to keep up with simple dollars and cents.The filmed entertainment industry's center of gravity is shifting further from Hollywood at a time of upheaval. The decadelong shift to streaming was exacerbated by the pandemic, which stalled, then boosted, production as people stayed inside and became couch potatoes. Peak TV came to a halt in 2022 when networks, studios, and streamers couldn't make the financial math for all those new streaming shows work. And filming was shut down once again in 2023 because of the Hollywood actors and writers strikes.When projects slowly got back on their feet, fewer of them were turning their lights on in LA. FilmLA, which issues permits for production in the region, found that Greater Los Angeles' share of US-produced TV and film projects declined from 23% in 2021 to 18% last year. The number of people employed in the traditional entertainment industry in LA, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, hit a 30-year low in June. At the same time, jobs related to video gaming, live events, and the creator economy rose in the city as people's <a target="_blank" href="https://www.emarketer.com/content/digital-media-makes-up-nearly-two-thirds-of-consumers-total-time-spent-with-media">media diet</a> shifted toward social video and away from traditional TV and movies.The biggest reason that productions are looking elsewhere is cost. The wage gains made by the actors and writers have increased budgets for talent, leading producers to hunt for ways to drive down outlays in other areas — including locations. Thirty-seven states offer perks for film and TV production — typically in the form of tax credits equal to a percentage of a production's in-state spending, or cash rebates — and at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ncsl.org/state-legislatures-news/details/watch-out-hollywood-states-want-a-piece-of-the-moviemaking-action-1">least 18 states have implemented or expanded</a> film tax incentives since 2021. Georgia boosted its incentive program in <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ajc.com/blog/buzz/top-grossing-films-shot-georgia-since-2008/joqaWPplc0L2mKzwmcNMwK/">2008</a>, helping attract big-budget films like Disney's Marvel franchise and the Netflix hit "Stranger Things." Atlanta's share of entertainment employment is still relatively small — just 2%, according to the Otis Report on the Creative Economy, a closely-watched research study — but that has doubled over the past decade and shows no sign of slowing.As productions move out of Los Angeles, it becomes easier for others to follow. Tiffany FitzHenry, an executive producer known for "Sound of Hope: The Story of Possum Trot," has seen the Atlanta area evolve since relocating there from LA in 2009."We have training for not just below the line but people in producing, packaging, financing," she told me, adding that the shift in major studio movies to the city had brought with it the structures needed to sustain a more permanent workforce."The biggest movies have been made here for the past 15 years," she said. "We have all the toys and tools at our fingertips."Other states are getting in on the action. Kentucky passed an incentive program in 2022 offering fully refundable production tax credits worth up to $75 million total or $10 million a project. Its second-largest city, Lexington, recently hired the entertainment marketer Lisa Brin, a Lexington native, to help persuade studios to shoot there. Brin said Lexington had attracted 30 film and TV projects so far this year, representing more than $2 million in local spending. In addition to the financial incentives, the city touts production spaces like Lex Studios, a facility with three sound stages, a growing crew base, and a willingness to pull strings as they did for a recent production that requested a major street to be closed for a shoot.In addition to luring productions, these areas are also trying to make it more appealing for creatives to stick around once the cameras shut off. Georgia and Kentucky are among states that have invested in training programs to foster homegrown talent and initiatives like FilmLex as a resource hub to help productions. For transplants, it's cheaper to live and raise a family outside LA as well as New York, the second-biggest entertainment market. And while jobs and the cost of living might be the primary reasons people move, the proliferation of cultural amenities in many smaller cities makes it easier for them to stay. 26 Keys, a production founded by Noah Hawley, an Austin native who created FX's "Fargo" series, is taking steps to build up Austin's entertainment cultural capital, with plans for a library, events like industry happy hours, and film screenings, working with organizations like the Austin Film Society and South by Southwest. "I just don't think there's a real sort of hub that's trying to connect them," said Maddy Bilder, a project director at 26 Keys. "That's what we're hoping to do here."It's not just other parts of the US that are drawing film crews away from LA; other countries are trying to win over Hollywood as well. Hungary, with a 20-year-old tax rebate and access to culture and an expanding stage system, was recently the setting for Yorgos Lanthimos' "Poor Things." Australia <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ausfilm.com.au/media-releases/ausfilm-celebrates-passage-of-australias-30-location-offset/">nearly doubled</a> its location tax credit to 30% this summer after big-budget titles like the Sony Pictures rom-com "Anyone but You" and the Universal Pictures comedy "The Fall Guy," which starred Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, were shot there. Roughly 60% of Netflix's and Amazon's commissions in the first half of this year were on continents other than North America, according to Ampere Analysis."I know of producers, senior production people, moving to places like Australia or working in Hungary," said Tyler Mitchell, the CEO of <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/inside-ron-howard-brian-grazer-impact-production-crew-staffing-platform-2023-3">Impact</a>, a LinkedIn-like platform for Hollywood. "In the UK, Australia, the governments have supported a lot of education, training, to make sure as they built up production facilities, they had enough crew to service sound stages. So there is more of a talent base globally in places like Ireland, Budapest, South Africa, and the UK. I've heard of more productions in Saudi Arabia looking for crew than I ever have."Actually being on a set is only one part of entertainment production. Development, preproduction, and postproduction are responsible for a huge portion of what ends up on screen. But here, too, the need to physically be in the mecca of moviemaking is waning. Technology is giving rise to a Tinseltown version of remote work.Self-tapes, where actors use ring lights and film themselves at home to connect with casting directors, have become commonplace. Many meetings to pitch projects that shifted to Zoom early in the pandemic have stayed on video. On the postproduction side, file sharing and editing platforms like Pix and ScreenIt Pro enable production companies like 26 Keys to review content locally rather than fly to editing rooms in LA."A lot of pitch meetings are happening over Zoom, four years later," Bilder said.While the power of Los Angeles is dispersing, no single "new Hollywood" is coming to take its place. The end of Peak TV has contracted employment all over — the total number of jobs in the industry, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/hollywood-losing-dominance-tv-movies-employment-chart-2024-10">at 447,000</a>, declined 9.1% from 2013 to 2024. Even as markets like Atlanta and Miami grow, their homegrown entertainment encampments have a long way to match the hundred-year history of LA — the most valuable parts of the supply chain, like casting big stars, greenlighting, and packaging, are still concentrated in the city."There's high stakes there. This is an area where trust matters," said Adler, the principal at Westwood, which conducted research for the Otis report. "You built it through face-to-face interaction, repeated exchanges. That's why casting for top roles still happens in LA, even if they end up being shot elsewhere."For those who are just starting out or who work on the creative side, too, Hollywood is still where careers are made and nurtured. FitzHenry wishes there were more directors and producers with packaging and marketing skills in Georgia. "It's a skill set that hasn't been outside of Hollywood," she said. "Currently, the only way to learn is for a producer to adopt and teach you. I was lucky to work with highly skilled producers, which I learned in LA, like an oral tradition. That's a lot of relational capital that needs to be established." Keisha Perry, a longtime entertainment attorney in Atlanta whose clients have included Cedric the Entertainer's production company and the movie "The Waterboyz," said that being a local attorney had made it easier to connect with the growing number of productions taking place in the South but that she still traveled to LA regularly."The reality is, a lot of the decision-makers are in LA," she said. "There are those people who feel as though if you're not in LA, your legitimacy can be questioned."Further evidence of LA's staying power is in the industries like video games, marketing, and the creator economy that are concentrated there because of the city's legacy in entertainment, which has endured through the rise of radio, then TV, then streaming. That may not necessarily lead to more TV shows and films being made there, but it underscores The Town's cultural importance.Gallegos estimates that he still gets half his work from outside New Mexico, helped by representation he has in LA. "The reality is, major roles are not cast here and often not shot here," he said. For all the perks, he misses the excitement of being in LA. "There's stuff happening 24/7. I'm a trained dancer, too. I could always jump into something." Then there's the nagging feeling that virtual auditions don't count. "Sometimes I think I'm sending things out into the void that don't get watched."Despite the similar professional gaps she sees, FitzHenry remains deeply rooted in Atlanta. She's found an affordable, friendly place to raise her kids and a tight-knit professional community that pulls together to help bring projects to the state, things she never experienced in LA."There's a sense people really care about each other," she said. "There used to be that mentality of, you have to be in Hollywood to be in the business. About 63% of counties classified as rural or in small metros had increases in this age demographic between 2020 and 2023 — compared to 27% between 2010 and 2013, based on an <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.coopercenter.org/research/young-adults-fuel-revival-small-towns-rural-areas">analysis</a> by Hamilton Lombard, a demographer at the University of Virginia.In particular, young people are flocking to rural communities in the Colorado <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/most-important-vc-investors-rocky-mountains-colorado-utah-montana-wyoming-2023-8">Rockies</a>, Georgia's Blue Ridge Mountains, and Montana's lakes, drawn by new work opportunities and the appeal of living surrounded by nature, Lombard's analysis showed.This map shows the percentage change in every US county for those aged 25 to 24 between 2020 and 2023. Many of the biggest gainers are rural and exurban areas in the South and Mountain West.The top 10 counties with the highest net percent increase between 2020 and 2023 of those aged 25 to 44 were all either rural or in metro areas with fewer than 250,000 residents.On the other hand, cities have seen stagnant or declining populations among the 25-44 age group. Of the 10 most populous US counties, five had declines, while two stayed the same. Los Angeles County had a 4% net loss in this demographic, while Kings County — or Brooklyn — lost 8%.Lombard said there's been a surge of young people moving to South Carolina, North Carolina, and Tennessee, oftentimes for work. He also said young people are moving back to the Flint, Michigan, area after many moved out amid the water crisis."In Knoxville's case, some of that has to do with the return to nuclear power; that's where Oak Ridge was, and there's still a large nuclear industry," Lombard said. "In Huntsville, aerospace is taking off. There's huge battery technology going in along I-85 going from Atlanta up toward Spartansburg."Indeed, the "Battery Belt" in the South has seen <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/south-korea-companies-jobs-manufacturing-evs-chips-batteries-2024-9">billions in manufacturing investments</a> pouring in, including from South Korean firms looking to build up their own production infrastructure. NVIDIA and Reliance Industries to build AI computing infrastructure in India

<ul class="summary-list"><li>Trump has said he plans to bring down gas prices by boosting US oil production.</li><li>ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods doesn't see a US oil boom in the near future.</li></ul>President-elect Donald Trump's promise to unleash a <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/cost-expensive-goods-price-impact-presidential-election-scenarios-trump-harris-2024-10">big oil boom</a> in the US and lower gas prices is running up against a market reality: The world is already awash in fossil fuels. ExxonMobil CEO Darren Woods told <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.semafor.com/article/11/12/2024/exxon-ceo-darren-woods-donald-trump-shouldnt-scrap-methane-regulations">Semafor</a> on November 12 that while he wants to maintain US oil production at its current highs, the market is already well supplied. "I don't think today that production in the US is constrained," he said. "I don't know that there's an opportunity to unleash a lot of production in the near term." During the presidential campaign, Trump said that he planned to lower energy prices — including the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/10/us/politics/trump-economics-gas-tariffs-inflation.html">cost of gas</a> — by increasing US oil production. "We will frack, frack, frack and drill, baby, drill," Trump <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.factcheck.org/2024/10/the-issues-trumps-proposal-to-lower-prices-by-increasing-energy-production/">said</a> in October. "I will cut your energy prices in half within 12 months." In September, Trump <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/09/10/us/politics/trump-economics-gas-tariffs-inflation.html">said</a> he would reduce gas prices to below $2 a gallon. Energy analysts told Business Insider that big oil companies are more focused on returning money to shareholders than investing in projects that boost production, especially because China isn't importing as much oil due to its economic downturn. Their comments underscore how little control a US president has over the oil and gas market, including prices at the pump. "It's a global market," Ben Cahill, director of energy markets and policy at the University of Texas at Austin, told BI. "There's very little any president can do to change the direction of oil or gasoline prices." Cahill added that he expects the US to increase oil production, but it will happen gradually. The US is already producing record amounts of oil, at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.eia.gov/todayinenergy/detail.php?id=61545">12.9 million barrels of crude a day in 2023</a> compared with about 11 million barrels per day in 2020, when Trump was in office. Last year, the US also became the world's biggest exporter of natural gas. In October, the US Energy Information Administration <a target="_blank" href="https://www.enerdata.net/publications/daily-energy-news/us-eia-expects-domestic-crude-oil-production-reach-135-mbd-2025.html#:~:text=At%20a%20global%20scale%2C%20the,13.5%20mb%2Fd%20in%202025.">projected</a> that the US would produce 13.5million barrels a day in 2025, hitting another record. And there is room for the industry to expand. Woods <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnbc.com/2024/11/01/exxon-ceo-says-us-election-wont-affect-oil-production.html">told</a> CNBC earlier this month that there are areas in the Gulf of Mexico — where federal leasing hasn't allowed companies to drill — that could be a source of additional oil production in the long term. Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, told BI that Trump could take some steps to try to boost US oil production, including easing regulations to open up additional places for companies to drill and working with OPEC. However, he said boosting oil production while keeping prices at a desired level is a "delicate balance" for the industry. "If oil prices drop, you're likely to see a natural decline in US oil production over the long run," he said, adding, "Oil companies have shareholders to be accountable to." In recent years, the US has increased oil production even as President Joe Biden imposed stricter limits on greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, oil and gas infrastructure, and gas-powered vehicles to help slow the climate crisis. In a separate interview with <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.wsj.com/business/energy-oil/exxon-says-trump-should-keep-u-s-in-paris-climate-pact-3d8de471">The Wall Street Journal</a>, Woods added that the US shouldn't drop out of the Paris Agreement as Trump did in his first term and has promised to do again. The nearly 200 countries signed onto that agreement <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/countries-strike-historic-climate-dealfossil-fuels-dubai-2023-12">struck a deal last year at the UN climate summit </a>to move away from fossil fuels this decade and the triple renewable energy by 2030. Woods told Semafor that he supports Biden's limits on methane emissions from the oil and gas sector. Exxon and other US oil majors have goals to reduce emissions, but climate scientists warn<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/exxon-chevron-investors-reject-climate-change-proposals-2023-6">they aren't aggressive enough</a> to avert catastrophic levels of global warming.

<ul class="summary-list"><li>While Democrats touted job growth under Biden, Trump won over voters facing high prices.</li><li>A BI analysis found real wages declined in states that had the biggest swings toward Trump.</li></ul>High prices dominated voters' minds this election cycle — and they likely played a key role in handing <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/donald-trump-wins-presidential-election-race-2024-11">President-elect Donald Trump</a> his victory.On the campaign trail, Trump clashed with President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris over their <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/what-us-economy-would-look-like-with-trump-biden-presidency-2024-5">handling of the economy</a>.<a target="_blank" class="" href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/UNRATE">Unemployment</a> sharply fell during the first year of Biden's term and has remained low. Biden <a target="_blank" href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2024/11/01/statement-from-president-joe-biden-on-the-october-2024-jobs-report/">oversaw the creation of 16 million new jobs</a> during his term as of October, and his administration frequently touted that growth.But <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/personal-finance/investing/what-is-inflation">inflation</a> also spiked during the early years of Biden's presidency, before its pace gradually slowed, creeping toward the Federal Reserve's 2% target.Trump told voters he would provide relief to their wallets across the board, from groceries to housing."I am promising low taxes, low regulations, low energy costs, low interest rates, secure borders, low, low, low crime and surging incomes for citizens of every race, religion, color, and creed," Trump <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.c-span.org/video/?538141-1/president-trump-remarks-economic-club-york">said</a> during remarks in September. "My plan will rapidly defeat inflation, quickly bring down prices, and reignite explosive economic growth."That promise resonated: Real, or inflation-adjusted, wage growth — or lack thereof — across the country shows a possible reason why.Many states where Trump most improved his margins saw large declines in real wages under Biden. Increases in wages were more than offset by higher living costs in these states.Counties with higher costs of living also voted for Trump more than they did in 2020.<h2 id="592a8bc6-249e-4af5-904c-d806f3ba6a2f">How Trump won on prices</h2>Business Insider looked at how average hourly earnings for private employees have changed in each state from January 2021, when Biden took office, to this past September. BI adjusted 2021 amounts using <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bls.gov/cpi/regional-resources.htm">Census-division-level inflation</a> to understand how much real wages have changed across the US. Rhode Island had the highest real wage growth, just one of around a dozen states that saw an increase.Using the <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/11/03/us/elections/results-president.html">2020</a> and <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/11/05/us/elections/results-president.html">2024</a> share of Trump votes by state reported by The New York Times, BI found that states with bigger real wage drops tended to have bigger shifts to Trump than other states.Some of the biggest swings came in heavily blue, expensive states. New York, which saw an 8.3% real wage decline and which has a high cost of living, also had a 6.5 percentage point increase in Trump's vote share from 2020 to 2024. Maryland, which saw an 11.2% real wage decline, swung toward Trump in 2024 by 5 percentage points.The nation's capital was an outlier. Real wages massively fell in <a target="_blank" class="" href="https://www.bea.gov/news/2023/real-personal-consumption-expenditures-state-and-real-personal-income-state-and">costly</a> Washington, DC; even before adjusting for inflation wages were roughly flat. While Trump did see a small uptick in the share of DC votes for him in 2024, it was one of the lowest percentage point increases based on BI's analysis.The cost of living and unemployment levels also factored into voters' feelings as they headed to the polls. Jed Kolko, an economist who served in the Biden administration, <a target="_blank" href="https://www.slowboring.com/p/breaking-down-the-election-results">wrote</a> in Matthew Yglesias' "Slow Boring" column that higher unemployment levels in US counties over the past year matched a swing in county votes toward Trump.The same goes with the cost of living: "Counties with a higher cost of living swung more toward Trump in 2024 relative to 2020. Expensive counties tend to be blue places like big coastal cities; Harris won most of these pricey counties, but by a smaller margin than Biden did in 2020, when controlling for demographics, education, and density," Kolko wrote.Kolko also found that local job growth did not have a significant relationship to voting patterns, while local federal spending from Biden's signature infrastructure and industrial investment programs did not appear to impact county election results either.Some experts have said that Trump's tariff policies would <a target="_blank" href="https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-tariffs-higher-inflation-fed-interest-rates-taxes-mortgage-rates-2024-11">stoke inflation and raise consumer prices</a>. Trump has instead argued that his policies would help with costs, promising voters they will see improvements once he takes office."Prices will come down," Trump <a target="_blank" href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/08/20/business/trump-inflation-prices-deflation/index.html">said</a> during an August speech. "You just watch: They'll come down, and they'll come down fast, not only with insurance, with everything."
