The death of 26-year-old <keyword id="20468023" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="EY" source="keywords" meta.keywordsubtype="org" meta.entityname="EY" meta.hostid="153" meta.entityid="EY">EY</keyword> employee, Anna Sebastian Perayil, shook the nation last week and people have been talking about the incident on social media. Her mother, in a letter to EY, had blamed “work stress” and said that she hopes no other family has to go through what they faced. Ever since the letter has gone viral, people are reacting to it. While many are saying how having a sense of <keyword id="19901232" type="General" weightage="20" keywordseo="work-life-balance" source="keywords">work-life balance</keyword> is important, others are lashing out at big companies for overworking their employees. Some experts have also weighed in on the debate, saying that the incident is unfortunate and people need to have compassion. <h2>Experts talk about work-life balance </h2> In a conversation with ANI, Corporate Outbound Expert, Tanmay Pendse, urged the government to introduce clear regulations aimed at managing workplace stress more effectively. “We are training people for the last 15-16 years and through the management activities, we make sure that such sessions are included which helps in reducing the stress. After employees reach home they should spend good time with their family and stay away from mobile phones. I appeal to the government to come up with a specific policy so that these kind of situations can be tackled,” Pendse said. He also recommended the introduction of wellness activities like yoga in companies to help employees unwind and manage pressure. Nikhil Badgujar, an Associate Consultant at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), reflected on how stress is an unavoidable part of corporate life and has to be managed. He also said that what happened with the EY employee was very unfortunate. “Whatever happened is very unfortunate. People need to understand how to react to stress. Stress is relative, as the stress I am feeling is not the same for the other person. People (need) to understand how to react. I can easily understand this as these things are very common nowadays. We need to think about how we can reduce the impact. This is the only thing we can manage. Stress cannot be avoided but it can be managed. In the corporate world stress is a part of our life. We need to understand how to react to that. We are the solution makers itself." Badgujar said. Anand Kulkarni, a Process Specialist at Infosys, agreed that while stress is prevalent in many workplaces, it can be handled with the right mindset. "Being in the corporate for more than ten years, I have been experiencing and observing a lot of work stress. I handle stress by enjoying the work. Stress does exist in the corporate world but it is all about how you handle it.” Pushkar Aurangabadkar, an educator and author, took a more philosophical approach to the issue, noting that societal pressures often drive people into high-stress environments. "The incident is very painful and it has a lot to do with the kind of aspirations that we have these days. The majority of which comes from the compulsive obsession for owning a lot of things. It is not just the trap of corporate but we also need to consider what makes people get into these traps in the first place.” Aurangabadkar added that fostering compassion and promoting spiritual wisdom could help reduce feelings of isolation and pressure in the corporate world. "But there are means and ways in which this can be handled in a better way and as a society, we should be taking care of it. It depends on corporate culture and as everyone might be aware every company has a different culture. It depends from company to company what kind of culture they have that defines how much pressure is getting instituted in that organisation. But beyond that what I believe is compassion and the longing for spiritual wisdom need to be promoted in society because it can reduce the possibility of such incident. The reason is that beyond the pressure people are facing in corporate, it drills down the compulsion and loneliness that we are facing and the answers to which may lie in the compassion." <h2>EY employee's death shocks nation</h2> Anna Sebastian Perayil, a 26-year-old Chartered Accountant, passed away in July 2024, just four months after joining EY in her first job. Her mother, in a heartfelt letter to the company, attributed Anna's death to extreme work pressure. The letter went viral on LinkedIn last week. Anna’s mother said in the letter that her daughter worked tirelessly, even on her convocation day despite experiencing chest pains. Though doctors found no immediate cause for concern, Anna continued to feel unwell. Her mother added how Anna’s manager would reschedule meetings during cricket matches and assign tasks at the end of the day, dismissing Anna’s concerns about the late-night workload. The letter added that despite her struggles, Anna chose to stay, eager to learn and gain experience, but the pressure proved too much. In her letter, Anna’s mother expressed her deep sorrow, not only at losing her daughter but also at EY's failure to provide support. She also said that none of Anna's colleagues or managers attended her funeral. (With ANI inputs)

Triggering marketing impact through Artificial Intelligence

It would make sure that the employees don’t look outside when they want to switch roles, and instead find one within the company. 
 
Compass, the digital platform rolled out by the technology giant would also allow them to mobilise available opportunities on career growth, learning and networks. 
 <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="100" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> is trying to digitise all its HR processes, putting an extra focus on technology so that it can enhance the experience of its employees. In the past couple of years, it has introduced a range of such initiatives using available technologies, which help its employees be more productive. 
 
"Those who want a change from their current job profile or posting can now log on to Compass, and view a curated list of opportunities based on their skills and interests. Employees can create a humanised profile to showcase their professional achievements. Video CVs, endorsements, blogs and badges can also be shared," Richard Lobo, SVP and head-HR, Infosys, told <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/tech/ites/infosys-internal-platform-compass-to-help-employees-change-job-profiles/articleshow/52998947.cms">ET</a>. 
 
The platform can also be used as a networking website where like-minded people can interact, thus facilitating making use of existing expertise and experiences that the employees possess. 
 
On its launch, the programme, which is available to employees pan India, saw over 6,000 requests from employees in three hours.

Infosys to allow employees to switch job profiles using an internal platform

The recent lay-offs at firms such as Wipro, Cognizant, Tech Mahindra, etc sent ripples across the IT sector. However, <keyword id="6354512" type="CITY" weightage="20" keywordseo="Infosys">Infosys</keyword> HR Head Krishnamurthy Shankar said the job cuts were blown out of proportion. Shankar said employees have to keep re-inventing and deliver high-quality performance rate. At Infosys, Shankar told ET, attrition is at 13.8 per cent and involuntary attrition, meaning those who are asked to leave for performance and value mismatches, is at 1.3 per cent. Infosys plans to hire 24, 000 employees in India, half of which will be freshers. Also, the company is encouraging managers to bring disruptions and changes in the work front. Infosys has come up with MaQ (manager quotient), which utilises crowdsourced feedback and analytics to personalise the learning journey. The programme uses data culled from company surveys through the year, exit interviews and employee feedback to allow managers to see how they are doing on certain core competencies. This is not the first time when Infosys has taken this kind of initiative. Last year, Infosys launched Compass, a digital platform that allows employees to mobilise available opportunities on career growth, learning and networks. Infosys’ Zero Distance programme is already doing well which aims at innovation in all projects the company is running.

 PM CARES donations from sportsmen From the sporting arena, Indian cricketer Suresh Raina is donating ₹52 lakh but only ₹31 lakh is going towards the PM-CARES fund. The other ₹21 lakh is going to Raina’s home state, Uttar Pradesh, towards the chief minister’s Disaster Relief Fund. "That's a brilliant fifty," Modi responded to Raina's contribution. The online payments platform PhonePe has launched a ₹100 crore pledge campaign in which they will add ₹10 to everyone’s donation.  L&amp;T, the Mumbai-based multinational, also announced a donation of ₹150 crore in addition to setting aside ₹500 crore to support its 1,60,000 contract workers. Pradeep and Pankaj Rathod from the Cello Group, known for its glassware, bottles and tiffin-ware, donated ₹3.5 crore to the fund. "Such support from the world of commerce and industry is extremely valuable," said Modi. The online stock trading platform, Motilal Oswal, is donating ₹5 crore to the PM-CARES Fund.  The ayurvedic consumer goods company Patanjali, founded by Baba Ramdev, has given ₹25 crore to the PM CARES Fund and set up five quarantine centers for those who have testing positive for Coronavirus. Indian tech giant Infosys, will be donating ₹100 crore through the Infosys Foundation, the company's arm for philanthropic efforts. Branches of government doing their part National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials are putting up one day's salary towards PM CARES. Coal India Limited (CIL) has pledged ₹220 crore and NLC India has promised ₹25 crore. All of Indian Railway's employees have pledged one day's salary to the newly-formed Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations (PM-CARES) Fund, according to union minister Piyush Goyal. Collectively, the contribution will amount to ₹151 crore from Indian Railways Ministry. Lookup, which started its operations last year in October, is a mobile application that uses chat to disrupt local commerce in India. 
 
The app, available on both Android and iOS, eliminates the need to call a retailer and wait for a response. It assimilates all the requirements from buying groceries, home delivery, to product/price enquiry into one app. 
 
On Wednesday, Lookup raised Series A funding from Stone. He has joined the team as an investor and advisor. Lookup will be using the funds towards investment in expanding its merchant base for convenience of its users and to branch out in newer geographies. 
 
Started by Innoz’s Deepak Ravindran, Lookup had already registered over 2, 00,000 downloads and answered over three million queries within about five months of its launch. 
 
“I'm honoured to be a part of Deepak’s next big project and I am truly impressed by what he has already accomplished in his life. I’m very excited about working with such an inspiring entrepreneur, whom I share common ideologies with,” said Stone. 
 Lookup raised a total of $382,000 in its seed round, from multiple investors including Infosys’ <keyword id="6530028" type="PERSON" weightage="80" keywordseo="Kris-Gopalakrishnan">Kris Gopalakrishnan</keyword>, Teru Sato, DeNA and MKS Group (Switzerland). 
 
“I am extremely thrilled that Biz Stone is personally investing in our Series A round. It is almost surreal. His beliefs and ideals are very fascinating and I am glad that someone so altruistic and with such a genuine moral compass is a mentor and advisor to me and my company,” said Ravindran. 
 
He added that receiving this funding was like getting another opportunity to blazon the world with innovation. “We plan to integrate all the offline businesses into the online world and connect them to their customers. The final goal is to make Lookup a global phenomenon and hope to ease the busy lives of the people,” said Ravindran, when asked about future plans. 
 
Going forward, Lookup will introduce more categories, payment options, NLP/Artificial Intelligence, deep linking to other apps as well as add a virtual store on its platform for vendors to sell through Lookup besides fostering partnerships with businesses in newer verticals such as education.
